12 best bat boxes
Bat boxes, also known as bat houses, are specially designed structures that provide shelter and habitat for bats. They are commonly used in backyard birding and wildlife conservation efforts to attract and support bat populations. Here's what you need to know about bat boxes:
Purpose: The primary purpose of bat boxes is to offer bats a safe and secure place to roost and raise their young. Many bat species are beneficial to the environment and to humans because they feed on insects, including agricultural pests. Providing them with suitable roosting sites can help control insect populations naturally.
Design: Bat boxes come in various designs, but they typically consist of wooden or plastic structures with multiple chambers or crevices where bats can roost. The boxes are often tall and narrow to mimic the tight spaces found in natural roosting sites, such as tree cavities and crevices in buildings.
Location: Proper placement of bat boxes is crucial for their effectiveness. They should be installed in areas with good sun exposure and at least 10 to 15 feet above the ground, away from direct sources of light and disturbance. South or east-facing locations are often preferred as they provide warmth for the bats.
Materials: Bat boxes are typically constructed from untreated wood, such as cedar, pine, or plywood, to provide a comfortable roosting environment. The interior surfaces may have rough textures to allow bats to grip and hang easily. The boxes should be designed to stay dry inside to prevent mold and disease.
Bat Species: Different bat species have varying roosting preferences, so it's important to research which species are native to your region and what type of box design they prefer. Some species prefer single-chamber bat houses, while others may prefer multi-chamber designs.
Maintenance: Bat boxes require minimal maintenance. Periodic cleaning is recommended to remove guano (bat droppings) and parasites. Cleaning should be done in the winter months when bats are not using the boxes.
Conservation: Installing bat boxes can contribute to bat conservation efforts. Many bat species are facing habitat loss and population declines due to various factors, including deforestation and habitat destruction. Providing artificial roosting sites can help mitigate these issues and support local bat populations.
In summary, bat boxes are structures designed to provide roosting sites for bats. They play a crucial role in bat conservation and can also be a valuable addition to backyard birding and wildlife conservation initiatives, as bats help control insect populations. Proper placement and maintenance of bat boxes are essential for their effectiveness in attracting and supporting bat colonies.

Question: | Do you caulk or glue the joints |

Thanks for reaching out and giving us the opportunity us to answer this publicly so that others can benefit as well. Have a great weekend ahead! :) |
Question: | Where on the outside of the house should I put them? I'm going to get |
Answer: | Hi Brooke! You'll want to put them on the side of the house that gets the most sun exposure (which is ideally facing somewhere between south and southeast). High Quality
Made from western cedar wood that weathers well and is naturally resistant to rot and insects. This bat box is also constructed in a way that will make it last longer than similar products. Tip: the right house color will provide the roost temperature that bats need in your area, so make sure you select a bat house color according to your location in the provided map.
No Corners Cut
We use a dado-style construction for the joints to keep the chambers dark and dry. We also assemble the bat house with decking screws instead of nails because otherwise it is only a matter of time until the weather separates the nails- leaving the chambers exposed, and rendering the bat house an unsuitable roosting choice for bats.
Easy to Install
All of our bat houses come with exterior-grade mounting hardware. Watch the short video we put together with basic instructions on how to prepare your bat house for mounting. Remember the following important tips:
- Avoid installing your bat house on a tree
- Mount it at least 10 to 12 feet above ground
- Pick a spot where it can receive at least 7 hours of direct sunlight
Enjoy a Richer and More Balanced Soil
Bat droppings (guano) are a powerful natural fungicide that help cleans out toxins from your soil while enriching it with valuable nutrients and improving its texture and drainage. As a fertilizer, guano also helps keep your plants green while strengthening the roots and stems! Tip: use a shallow tray underneath the bat house to collect the droppings, and use protective gloves while handling guano to safeguard your health.
Earth Conscious
The wood used in making this bat house is 100% FSC (SAI, 2019). That means it is sourced from a forest that is managed with consideration for people and wildlife.
Support Bat Populations
We are beyond excited that you will be supporting bats in your area by giving them a home! And so we created a free guide for you with the 5 tried and proven methods to attract bats and keep them coming back, and none of them include using bat guano or a bat attractant spray because, according to MTBC and BCI, they simply don’t work! (Pictured here catching an insect is a Brazilian free-tailed bat, one of the species that are known to use bat houses in the US)

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any safe, effective way to keep wasps from inhabiting the bat house |
Answer: | Hi there! We've designed the bat house with a 3/4" inch opening, which is a size recommended by experts and that have been known let bats in while reducing the likelihood of wasps nesting inside. The most effective way to prevent wasp nestings would be to manually check the bat house and clean it out of any nesting material. It is generally recommended to do that once a year before the spring. But If wasp nestings are too common in your area, you may benefit from conducting a visual check on the bat house (while bats are not there) once a month to make sure wasps have not set up a nest inside. Hope that helps! |
Question: | Is the inside painted or natural wood |
Answer: | natural wood |
Question: | Simply instal and the house will attract bats? No bait or spray needed to start |
Answer: | Hi there! Based on the research and the extensive experience of bat scientists at BCI and MTBC, there is no evidence that bat attractant sprays or bait are effective at all in attracting bats to your bat house. And so it is safe to say that you could save your money from being spent on attractants :) If a bat house is installed correctly and meets several important criteria, bats are pretty good at finding it on their own. When they are scouting for a home to roost in, they are able to detect nooks and cavities while flying! Here are some of the most important criteria for installing a bat house correctly: 1) It is placed somewhere where it can receive at least 7 hours of direct sunlight. 2) it is at least 10 to 12 feet above ground. 3) Avoid installing your bat house on a tree as that will make it a fast food restaurant for predators! 4) It is within at least half a mile of a body of water. 5) For this particular 4-compartment bat house, it has proven to be very successful when installed on the side of a house or a building. The reason being is that your house will act like a heat sink that will help regulate the internal temperature of the bat house. Those are some of the things that will attract bats into your bat house! There are more proven tips that you can apply to make sure that your bat house is installed correctly. And we wrote a fee guide with MTBC that outlines the best practices and recommendations in this regard. Hope this helps :) Please feel free to reach out at anytime if you have any other questions! WHITEHORSE is proud to be the first American company to be endorsed by MTBC in introducing this unique bat house design to North America. MTBC approved this bat house for first-time testing in the USA [MTBC, 2020] after proving to be very successful when installed on houses or buildings.
A Quality That We Stand By
Made from western cedar wood that weathers well and is naturally resistant to rot and insects.
(Pictured here catching an insect is a Brazilian free-tailed bat, one of the species that are known to use bat houses in the US)
Makes for a Thoughtful Gift
The packaging is full of useful information about bats and installation tips for your new bat house. It is also elegantly designed and looks great as a gift!
Product description
Create a home for nature’s only remaining flying mammals. You may be concerned with the severe decline in bat population, or simply want to provide a safe and secure home for the furry flyers. Installing a bat house on your property will create a safe and lasting habitat for those little night time aerial acrobats.
We proudly hand craft each shelter in our tiny woodworking shop in the Upper Midwest. Your pre-finished, select grade pine’s straight grained properties ensure structural integrity and years of use in harsh outdoor conditions. This premium lumber is free of knots, drastically reducing sap odor (which could deter inhabitation). Narrow interior dimensions ensure a cozy environment conducive to heat retention. Bat ecologists and conservationists recommend that bat shelters installed in most areas of the U.S. be painted or stained a dark color. Save yourself the time and trouble, choose a pre-finished bat shelter! Each bat house arrives at your door ready to install, there are pre-drilled mounting holes in the lower section, and a steel hanger installed on the back. We include 3- 2 ½ inch exterior grade deck screws and instructions for mounting on your house, a tree, or a free-standing pole.
And finally, we’d like to thank you for supporting our small business and US manufacturing! We believe you’ll be thoroughly satisfied with your purchase.
- MADE IN THE USA! We constantly improve our design and construction and continue to make significant improvements this year to ensure it arrives intact and lasts for many years in your backyard. Think twice before buying a Chinese made bat house! Most bat houses on the market are made in China with cheap, thin (1/2 inch) lumber. They tend to warp and split within the first year. WE ONLY USE THE BEST QUALITY MATERIALS.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone verify if they actually got bats in them |
Answer: | Yes. I gave my Grandson this bat house for his Birthday last July. Within a week he had several bats take up residence in it. They live in Me. and the mosquitoes were extremely vicious there.. The bats are on the rise, the skeeters are on the decline. |
Question: | How many bats can live in these |
Answer: | 5 bats from the suburbs; and 12 from the inner city. |
Question: | Can you recommend a bat house for south carolina's lowcountry |
Answer: | You really could go either way (dark vs. cedar) considering average temperatures in your area. Looks like your average highs top out at 95 degrees in summer which is probably about max for bats in a dark shaded house, they'd definitely appreciate the extra warmth with your winter lows. Considering that bats prefer to be warm and cozy I think the dark shade would be best. Have a great day! -Matt |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many bats does this house |
Answer: | 1 or 2 |
Question: | Where are incly products made |
Answer: | In the USA |
Question: | Has the bat house been stained so that it can be mounted outdoors right away |
Answer: | No, it is not stained, but it is made of cedar, it will not rot. |
Question: | Can it be cleaned |
Answer: | My extensive relationships with little brown bats tells me there won't be much need to "clean" the house. They tend to be pretty clean little things and they pretty much poop so their stuff falls out the bottom. However, if you feel the need to clean out the house, knock yourself out. A product called "Guano be Gone" used with some agua and elbow grease would probably yield your desired result. Watch your elbows. |
