Answer:	I have had mine over a year (3-4 times a week usage) and they show cracks or crumbling.

Answer:	I would say yes, These bricks are placed under the grill as a means to distribute the heat from your burners evenly across the grill. the ones that have already been in use, turn them over to bake off the drippings. They then will char and flake off much easier.
