12 best camp stoves

Camp stoves are portable cooking devices designed for outdoor use, particularly for camping, backpacking, picnicking, and other outdoor recreational activities. These stoves provide a convenient and efficient way to prepare hot meals and beverages in outdoor settings where traditional kitchen appliances are not available. Here's what you should know about camp stoves in relation to the categories you mentioned:

  1. Propane Grills and Gas Grills: Camp stoves often use propane or other gas fuels as their energy source, similar to propane grills and gas grills. They are equipped with burners that allow for precise temperature control, making them suitable for cooking a wide range of dishes, from boiling water for coffee to grilling burgers and steaks in the great outdoors.

  2. Grills Smokers: While camp stoves primarily serve as stovetops for cooking, some models come with grilling attachments or accessories, allowing you to grill food directly on the stove. However, they are distinct from traditional grills and smokers designed specifically for grilling and smoking meats.

  3. Grills Outdoor Cooking: Camp stoves are indeed part of the broader category of outdoor cooking equipment, including grills, smokers, and other portable cooking appliances. They offer versatility in outdoor cooking by providing a compact and transportable option for preparing meals away from home.

  4. Patio Lawn Garden: While camp stoves are primarily designed for outdoor adventures, they can also be used in backyard settings, patios, and gardens. They come in various sizes and styles to cater to different cooking needs, making them suitable for outdoor gatherings and events.

Camp stoves vary in design, fuel type, and features. Some common types of camp stoves include:

  • Propane Camp Stoves: These are easy to use and popular for their convenience. They often have adjustable burners, making it possible to cook with precision.

  • Liquid Fuel Camp Stoves: These stoves use liquid fuels like white gas or kerosene. They are known for their reliability and ability to perform well in extreme weather conditions.

  • Canister Stoves: These compact stoves use canisters of compressed gas (e.g., butane or isobutane) for fuel. They are lightweight and convenient for backpackers.

  • Wood-Burning Stoves: Some camp stoves are designed to burn wood or other biomass materials, making them an eco-friendly option for cooking while camping.

In summary, camp stoves are versatile outdoor cooking appliances that offer a convenient way to prepare meals and heat beverages during camping and outdoor activities. They are related to propane grills, gas grills, and other outdoor cooking equipment, providing options for cooking in a variety of outdoor settings.

Product description

The 2 burners put out 20,000 total BTUs of grilling power and are shielded from the wind by adjustable wind-blocking panels. Rest assured, your stove will perform consistently even in extreme conditions thanks to the pressure regulator.

About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

  • Cooking power: Up to 20,000 total BTUs
  • 2 adjustable burners: For precise temperature control

  • Pressure regulator: Pressure-control technology for consistent performance, even in extreme conditions

User questions & answers

Question: What are the dimensions of cooking surface when stove is open for cooking grill
Answer: about 20'' x 10''
Question: Which carry case fits this stove
Answer: Coleman Part# 2000004431. That case will fit the stove AND can hold Two propane bottles. It's a nice case, keeps your stove looking like new plus carrying the bottles.
Question: What type of connector do I need for this Coleman Stove? I see many types but do not know which one to buy
Answer: it comes with the connector. you don't need to worry about that as long as you buy the small, green, one-use propane canisters.
Question: Can an adapter and propane tank be used with this burner
Answer: I'm not 100% sure but I think it should, provided the adapter is for this kind of Coleman propane stove. Personally, I use a refill adapter to refill my One-LB propane bottles from the 20-LB BBQ propane tank. I like the ease of the 1-LB bottles. The 20-LB tanks are too bulky for camping trips. User questions & answers

Question: What's the shelf life of the battery if never used
Answer: Hey Bright! To clarify, the battery should last a long time and be functional if the unit is not being using and constantly re-charged, up to 5 years. If you mean how long will it retain the charge was at full and not used, we would say 6 months. Let us know if this answers you questions. -BioLite
Question: Can you use charcoal to burn in the stove
Answer: No, Charcoal should never be used. It burns hotter and will not "breathe" like wood and other biomass will. Stick to wood, pinecones, crop waste and other biomass for optimal use. Thanks! -BioLite
Question: Li-ion cells have about a 2 to 3 year lifespan. Is there a way to replace the battery or do you have to replace the whole stove when the battery dies
Answer: Hey Stephen! The cell in our stoves will usually last much longer than 2-3 years - that is the lifespan for frequently used devices like cell phones. Our batteries last up to 5000 charge/discharge cycles, so depending on how often you go camping, this could mean from 3-7 years. The battery can not be replaced, but typically by the time it needs replacing after years of use, the whole unit needs replacement.-BioLite

User questions & answers

Question: Where is it made from
Answer: Looking at the previous answers, looks like it used to be made in the usa, but now it looks like it's made in china. In the product details, it says it's made in china as of 5-28-17.
Question: can i use it without the legs? or what's the lowest i can adjust the legs to
Answer: No, you cannot use it without the legs. I looked at this too. The propane connection assembly extends lower than the metal shield around the burner. The legs do not have a lot of adjustment, maybe an inch or two. I have the stove packed away with my camping gear and cannot verify the exact amount of adjustment or lowest cooking height.
Question: I would purchase this to do pressure canning outside. Is there a problem with the weight of a full canner
Answer: Weight is not the issue with outside canning..... Too much heat on the thin aluminum canner bottoms is the issue. https://www.healthycanning.com/pressure-canner-heat-source/#heat-source-too-high Most everyone agrees to definitely avoid any “turkey fryer” propane heaters because of the high heat required to boil the oil to fry the turkey would damage many canners. Some people say, however, that there are some safe outdoor heat sources — ones with adjustable temperature controls such as the Camp Chef line.  “Only Camp Chef brand 2 burner stove on low is the only safe one we know of.”  4
Question: How much weight can this handle? I am hosting a lobster bake so I am figuring about 45 pounds/ 21kg will be on the unit at any given time. Thank you
Answer: I came here to look up this answer. I can say that I've had mine since 2015 and have routinely mashed and boiled wort on the burner. Over 7 gallons. Which would be around 56 pounds. I may have even doubled this up once with two batches at the same time.

User questions & answers

Question: Do the side flaps come off or fold outward all the way so that a longer griddle can be used
Answer: Yes they fold out, so if its not windy you can have a larger pot pan or griddle, Does the back come off though? the Eureka spires does.
Question: Is there an attachment for the hose from a 20 lb propane bottle
Answer: It is not included, but you can certainly purchase one. We attach ours to our trailers quick disconnect still using the sm bottle attachment.
Question: Will this support the lodge 20" by 10.44 inch griddle without removing the wind flaps
Answer: i got it out and measured it. it will take the griddle you present. 3/4 inch space each end of 20 inches with wings up. the 10 inch side has 3/4 in in back and no limit in front. hope this was helpful.
Question: I've never purchased a camping stove before and not sure what to expect--in all regards....really... :) But, to be clear, do I need to purchase a hose and/or connector for a propane tank or does that come with the purchase of the stove
Answer: You will need a hose to connect to a large propane tank but there is a connector for the small bottles. BTW, this stove is the bomb. When we lost power this past Thanksgiving, EVERYTHING that needed to be cooked on a stovetop we cooked on this stove because the turkey was in the oven and our generator wouldn't support the oven and burners. The stove performed wonderfully!

Answer: I am a staffer at EO Products. We have not tested the product for this purpose and do not claim that will work to repel insects, however, the lavender essential oil MAY help. Mix Witch Hazel, Vegetable Glycerin and Essential Oils in a bowl and whisk. Add water and whisk until well blended. Pour into a spray bottle. Shake before using. Answer: Usually a tank will last 8 hrs if you leave it at medium heat to low. Depending in the space required to heat. So if you the calculations. 20 min X 3 = 60 min 3X8=24. So about 24 times give or take a few.
Question: Is it sturdy enough to set a cast iron skillet ontop of and cook food without worrying about damaging the burner setup
Answer: Hello. I take this stove camping and canoeing all the time. I use a large, heavy, cast iron skillet with a 11" base, 12" top, 2.25" sides to do my cooking. However, to maintain a hotter oil temperature for frying fish you must cover the cast iron skillet with a lid otherwise the oil will not get hot enough to boil. I purchased a commercial aluminum lid for a stock pot to use. NOW, LISTEN CAREFULLY, the factory propane cylinder PLASTIC BASE WILL NOT WORK and IS DANGEROUS TO USE with this setup. The cast iron skillet I use is much to heavy for safe use and with boiling oil you are heading for disaster. Here is the SOLUTION for a larger, very sturdy base. Get a new or used 12" non-stick fry pan. Take the handle off (grind, bend, or unscrew). File any sharp edges. Drill a 3/8" hole in the center of the pan. Get (1) 3/8" x 1 1/2" or 2" long bolt (depending how deep the non-stick fry pan is), lock nut, 2 washers. Get about 6" of 4" diameter PVC plastic pipe. Get a 4" PVC plastic pipe end cap with a flat bottom. Press, or glue, the PVC end cap onto the 6" long PVC pipe. Drill a 3/8" hole through center. Now assemble stand: non-stick fry pan cooking side faces away or to ground. PVC pipe is now all 1 piece and rests on top of flat surface of fry pan. 3/8" bolt with washer goes inside pipe, through fry pan and is bolted with washer and lock nut making the entire unit 1 piece. DO NOT tighten the 3/8" bolt so tight that it splits the plastic PVC, just snug. The 3/8" bolt should not extend past the lip of the fry pan or it will not sit level. The 1 pound cylinder will fit inside with single burner stove attached. You have just made a much safer base for your Coleman single burner stove. "WARNING" You must still exercise EXTREME CAUTION and CAREFULNESS when cooking with this setup and especially when using HOT OIL (wear oven mitts when removing HOT skillet). You can vary the diameter of the base fry pan for sturdiness, or the PVC pipe height. The cooking surface has now been raised but as long as the ground is solid and flat, or the table sturdy enough, I have not had an issue with tipping. There is a small space between the PVC pipe and the 1 pound cylinder. You can wedge a small twigs in, or plastic, whatever works to tighten the cylinder so it does not shift around or turn while cooking. I pack the PVC and base as 1 piece but you can unbolt them if you have to make 2 smaller items. Best Regards, and Enjoy Cooking With Your Coleman.

User questions & answers

Question: Would it work with an 8 oz Butane canister from Coleman
Answer: No, you need Isopro (butane/propane) mixed blend canister type fuel that screws on. The butane fuel cans that you use on lunchbox stoves do not work.
Question: Can I use indoors
Answer: It's generally a bad idea to use propane or butane stoves indoors. They often don't fully combust, so you can get unburnt fuel gas and carbon monoxide in the room. If you have very good insulation (a fume hood or a fan blowing out an open window) then it's safer.
Question: I'm looking at a 48oz portable tea kettle. How long would it take for this to boil 48 ounces
Answer: This is a small pocket sized stove. My concern would be safety of having a large vessel staying on the small stove. This stove is for heating small things like a can of soup or water for 1 - 2 people to have coffee. That said, it is a wonderful stove for small jobs. 48 ozs. will require a medium sized pot and I'd trust it on this stove only if I had my hand on the pot handle at all times to support it. I'd guess 5 - 10 mins. to bring 48 oz. to slow boil. I don't know for sure because I would not use this stove to boil that much water.
Question: Q tipo de combustible usa
Answer: Compatible with any 7/16 thread single butane/butane-propane mixed fuel canisters (EN 417). does NOT fit into propane canisters

User questions & answers

Question: Which latch does this model come with? Most pictures show a large black latch, but 2 pics have the small cheap silver latch that's on the classic
Answer: Sometimes Amazon's photos are confusing. Mine will come with the silver latch.
Question: Can you buy the adapter hose and use a bigger gas bottle
Answer: You absolutely can! If you purchase the Coleman 5’ hose and adapter it show’s the 2burner camp stove on the box.
Question: What is the difference between this triton model and the Coleman classic stove
Answer: I just got off the phone with Coleman today (7/23/16)...I confirmed with them that the burner control knobs are the SAME construction as the Classic Stove. It is a bit larger, but the basic workings are the same.I bought a Classic at Walmart and have read those reviews re: the control of the flame. The Triton and the Classic can both have the same issue of hard to control flame. The "repair" outlined with the Classic should also work with the Triton...I am referring to the Triton 20953, which does not have Instastart. But the actual controls with the knobs are all the same....
Question: Seems plenty of the reviews have noted this is not an insta-start stove as described. which is correct? the reviews or the product description
Answer: The reviews are correct. I, like you, thought the product description must be correct and that the reviewers simply mistakenly ordered the wrong product or something, so I ordered the stove since it said it was the newer model. In fact it does not have the insta start. Here's how you can tell from the product photo: the instastart button is a red button on the left lower side of the stove. Not there on this model. I sent it back and was able to pick one up at REI in time for our trip that had the instastart button and it worked great. REI also has a sale right now on a different (more upscale) camp stove that is even less than the Coleman Triton.

User questions & answers

Question: How long did it take to fully cool down before it could be put in the backpack
Answer: A while... good to have some water with you to expedite cooling. In my experience....
Question: Made in the US
Answer: I have to be honest here. I tore into that Stoker Flatpack packaging so fast I did not read any of the labeling. Manufacturing location is not stamped anywhere on the Flatpack itself. I've emailed the guys and gals over at MOL to get this answered. Will update once i hear back.I received a reply from MOL in regards to your question. "We assemble and package the Stöker here in the USA; however, we have the components for the stove precision CNC cut overseas."
Question: Can someone tell me if they have Boiled water with this stove and how long it truly took to Boil
Answer: I’ve boiled water with it. The time depends largely on the user. If you keep feeding fuel, it will burn much faster and hotter. Took me around 3 mins give or take
Question: Will this work with Sterno cans for fuel
Answer: Yep! It'll work with a Sterno.... or a Trangia alcohol stove, as well. The interior base dimensions are 4.75" x 4.75. Plenty of room for whatever fuel source you'd like to throw in! Hope this helps!

User questions & answers

Question: will this fit in both the two burner grilldle and one burner bobecue box together ? thanks
Answer: You can use a 16" deep griddle that covers two burners (Model: SG90 or CGG24B) and a small bbq box (Model: BB100L) that covers one burner at the same time. You could also get a BBQ box (Model: BB90L or BB90LS) that would cover two burners and a griddle (SG14 or CGG16B) that would cover 1 burner at the same time.
Question: I’ve been thinking of building a table top and setting this up as a semi-permanent outdoor stove. What kind of durability would it have with such use
Answer: I really couldn't say. It burns hot so I'm not sure it could safely have the frame enclosed. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer for you.
Question: Is this the same grill you can get at academy for
Answer: It looks the same. I looked at the Academy website and it adds the griddle. All other specs are the same as the unit I have. This is a very good buy. I don’t always use the unit but I can say I love it. Mainly used for canning.
Question: Has anyone used this for pressure canning and if so what is your opinion? thanks
Answer: I just pressure canned 80 pounds of chicken breast on my back patio using this stove. It was fabulous. Maintained even heat temperature so i didn't have to constantly readjust temp control knob.
