12 best natural lump charcoals
Natural lump charcoal is a type of fuel commonly used for grilling and outdoor cooking. It is a popular choice among barbecue enthusiasts for its distinct qualities. Here is what you need to know about natural lump charcoal:
Source: Natural lump charcoal is made from hardwood, typically from trees like oak, hickory, maple, mesquite, and fruitwoods. It is a more natural and unprocessed form of charcoal compared to briquettes, which often contain additives and binders.
Appearance: Natural lump charcoal comes in irregularly shaped pieces and lacks the uniform appearance of charcoal briquettes. These irregular pieces can vary in size and shape.
Burns Hotter: One of the key advantages of natural lump charcoal is that it burns hotter than briquettes. This high heat is desirable for grilling and searing meats quickly, giving them a nice crust while keeping the inside juicy.
Clean-Burning: Natural lump charcoal typically produces less ash compared to briquettes. This means less cleanup and maintenance during and after grilling sessions.
No Additives: As the name suggests, natural lump charcoal contains no artificial additives, fillers, or binders. It's pure wood, making it a preferred choice for those who want a cleaner and more natural grilling experience.
Flavor: Some grillers believe that natural lump charcoal imparts a subtle smoky flavor to the food being cooked, enhancing the overall taste of grilled dishes.
Quick Lighting: Natural lump charcoal generally ignites more quickly than briquettes. You can start grilling sooner, reducing the wait time.
Versatility: It can be used in various types of grills, including charcoal grills, kamado grills, and smokers, making it a versatile choice for outdoor cooking.
Sustainability: Many natural lump charcoal brands claim to source their wood from sustainable forests, making it an environmentally friendly choice for grilling.
Price: Natural lump charcoal is often priced higher per pound compared to briquettes due to its higher quality and purity. However, many enthusiasts consider it a worthwhile investment for the improved grilling experience.
When using natural lump charcoal for grilling, it's essential to have good airflow in your grill to maintain a consistent temperature. Additionally, while the irregular shapes of lump charcoal can make it harder to stack neatly, they can also provide better distribution of heat throughout the grill.
Overall, natural lump charcoal is a favorite among grillmasters who value the purity, high heat, and flavor-enhancing qualities it brings to outdoor cooking.

Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from real trees so it burns clean and gives you a robust wood-fire flavor. Some other brands are made from scrap furniture or processed wood. This means less wood-fire flavor. Burns hotter for moister meats!
Because Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from hardwood, it burns hotter. This allows you to achieve steak- searing temperatures. Used in conjunction with a ceramic grill which insulates well, you’ll use less total heat to cook your food which means moister meats. Burns longer for better slow cooking!
Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal burns longer thanks to the hardwood used to make it. Also, you’ll get the right mix of fast-starting small pieces and long-burning large pieces that will allow you to cook low and slow for extended periods of time. Other lump charcoals offer too many cheaper small pieces and not enough larger pieces.
Costs less per use. Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal costs less per use because the hardwood charcoal burns hotter and the larger pieces burn longer. If you close the vents in your grill when done, you’ll also be able to re-use partially burned charcoal pieces.
- 20 pounds of 100 percent natural lump charcoal
- Can burn up to 18 hours
- Reusable up to three times
- Made from a blend of hardwood - Guayacan, Guayaibi, Mistal, and White Quebracho

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the dimensions |
Answer: | Yes. I took the stone off the metal carrier and placed it onto the grate of my round grill. Fits well and I haven't had any problems with it. If your grill is larger it will still fit fine. If your grill is bigger and you need more cooking space you can also try ceramic tiles that are meant for cooking and you can customize the size/shape. |
Question: | Do you get one or two 20lb bags |
Answer: | Yes you may place it on the grill, but, a little experimenting is necessary. I like to get my fire way above the 500 Degree mark on the grill. After a few burnt underside crusts, and at the opposite side of the spectrum - middle of the pizza not done enough to my liking (I am very liberal with my toppings), I arrived at the perfect arrangement. Plcae a pile of coals on each side of the grill (indirect cooking method). Place 6 Briquets or the uquivalent in Natural Lump Charcoal in 1 LAYER underneath the center of the pizza. Light all coals with lighter fluid. Once coals are ready close the top of the grill and wait for temperature to be scorching hot. Place pizza stone in center and close for 1-2 minutes (longer it will be too hot and crust will be burnt) Place pizza on stone and close lid. In about 8 minutes it will be perfect. (make sure you have good quality hot pads). Remove pizza stone and place in Weber stainless steel carrier that comes with stone. Pizza stays hot much longer on stone. For pizza, either make your own, or start with a good quality frozen pizza such as East Side Cafe or Vito and Nicks. I add mozzarella, and fresh toppings. I always add a few dashes of extra virgin olive oil and small amount of sea salt. Try Arugula and Prosciutto with some re constituted diced morel mushrooms (items placed under cheese). |
Question: | How Big Is It |
Answer: | 13.4 in diameter for the pizza stone. With the handles, it's 16.5 in. The stone is removable and sits ion the handle when on the grill. |
Question: | You can get a 20 lb bag of big green egg charcoal for $27 at ace hardware. why is this sooo expensive on amazon |
Answer: | can the stone be placed in the oven resting on the carry rack |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you light lump charcoal |
Answer: | Do not use lighter fluid. I used solid fire starters. Found it takes two in different locations to get the charcoal hot quicker. I recently started using the Bison-Airlighter to get it lighted faster. |
Question: | Can this be used in a portable grill for tailgating |
Answer: | Yes, as long as it’s a charcoal grill. This charcoal burns hotter & longer than Kingsford brickett charcoal. |
Question: | What type of wood is in this |
Answer: | I really don't know but I can say that I did not like it - it burns very rapidly. I prefer briquettes because they produce a controlled heat with a steady burn. I tried the stuff two or three times then used the remaining wood as kindling to start my wood stove. Waste of money in my opinion . |

User questions & answers
Question: | Novice smoker here (webber smokey mountain 18" smoker) - what's the most efficient way to light this stuff? how much should i use for my small smoker |
Answer: | I use two to four natural charcoal fire starter squares. There are a number of brands on Amazon. |
Question: | Can you use it in a pizza oven |
Answer: | I assume that it is a wood fire pizza box. I use this in my Big Green Egg and it can generate temperature in excess of 600 degrees. I have to use vents to manage temperature. If the oven has air vent controls, than it should work. |
Question: | Is this additive free? If not, what is added? My husband is auto immune so he cant have most if not all additives |
Answer: | The front of the bag states “All Natural” and “Large Chunks Only / One Ingredient / Oak Hardwood / Hand Picked Pieces” so no mention of any additives. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | The bag says “Made In Mexico” but it is not specifically stated whether that is the source of the oak wood or the location of charcoal production or both. |
- 100% all-natural lump charcoal made from Missouri grown Oak, Hickory, Maple, & Pecan.
- #1 consumer ranked charcoal and on The Naked Whiz' Lump Charcoal Database. "Highly recommended" by the professional reviewers at The Naked Whiz.
- Our slow burning, ash minimizing coal lights easily, heats quickly, and burns boldly for juicier, more flavorful food and is great for any type of grill or smoker.

- Our paper bag and soy-based inks are recyclable, landfill-safe, and won't produce harmful fumes if burned.
User questions & answers
Question: | Why is this twice as expensive then buying it in the store? It is normally $21.00 for a 20 lbs bag. Am I reading this correct |
Answer: | If you can buy 20 lbs. for $21.00, Buy It!! |
Question: | How large are the lumps of charcoal |
Answer: | Due to the high carbonization, Rockwood is brittle and breaks down with agitation. Just like potato chips, it is all screened at the plant, so any small pieces and dust occur after bagging. So, it varies depending on the carrier's handling. Contrary to other brands' advertising, huge and dense chunks of "charcoal" are not a good thing. The reason they are huge and dense is because they are still full of wood fiber and water. Anything charcoal that is properly carbonized should be able to be broken apart by hand. If you have to use a hammer, you're paying for wood and water in a CHARCOAL product sold by weight. Buying local is going to be your best bet if you're looking for a highly carbonized charcoal that has the largest chunks possible. |
Question: | Why is this more than twice the cost of other retailers of this product |
Answer: | Shipping.....it's large and heavy. Half of that goes to UPS or Fedex. Stores buy multiple pallets at a time, much more economical to ship that way vs. by the bag. |
Question: | How many lbs are each bag |
Answer: | Each bag is 20-lbs. |
