12 best weed killer for lawns concentrates

Weed killer concentrates for lawns are concentrated formulations of herbicides designed to effectively control and eliminate weeds in a lawn or garden. These concentrates are typically mixed with water before application, allowing for precise and customizable weed control. Here's what you should know about weed killer concentrates for lawns:

  1. Types of Herbicides: There are various types of herbicides available in concentrate form, each designed to target specific types of weeds or address different weed control needs. The two main categories are:

    • Selective Herbicides: These herbicides target specific types of weeds while leaving desirable grass and plants unharmed. They are suitable for lawns with weed infestations.
    • Non-Selective Herbicides: Non-selective herbicides kill most plants they come into contact with and are typically used for clearing areas with heavy weed growth, like driveways or sidewalks.
  2. Concentration Levels: Weed killer concentrates are highly concentrated and need to be diluted with water before use. The dilution ratio is usually specified on the product label and can vary depending on the brand and product type.

  3. Application Methods: Concentrated weed killers can be applied using various methods, including:

    • Sprayers: Garden sprayers or backpack sprayers are commonly used to apply diluted herbicides evenly over the lawn.
    • Hose-End Sprayers: These devices attach to a garden hose and automatically dilute and spray the herbicide as you water your lawn.
    • Spot Treatment: For localized weed problems, you can mix a small amount of concentrate in a handheld spray bottle for spot treatment.
  4. Timing and Season: The timing of herbicide application is crucial for effective weed control. Some herbicides are applied pre-emergence, before weed seeds germinate, while others are applied post-emergence, targeting actively growing weeds. The appropriate season for application varies based on the type of weed and herbicide.

  5. Safety Precautions: When using weed killer concentrates, it's essential to take safety precautions. This includes wearing protective clothing, gloves, and eyewear, as well as following the manufacturer's instructions regarding handling, mixing, and application.

  6. Environmental Considerations: Always be mindful of potential environmental impacts when using herbicides. Avoid overspraying onto non-target plants, and take care to prevent runoff into water sources.

  7. Persistence and Reseeding: Some herbicides may have residual effects that can affect the ability to reseed or overseed your lawn.Check the product label for guidance on when it's safe to reseed after application.

  8. Storage and Disposal: Store herbicide concentrates in their original containers in a cool, dry place, and keep them out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of empty containers and unused product according to local regulations.

  9. Choosing the Right Product: Selecting the appropriate weed killer concentrate depends on the type of weeds in your lawn, the size of the area to be treated, and your lawn care goals. Reading product labels and seeking advice from a local garden center or extension office can help you make an informed choice.

Remember that effective weed control often requires a combination of methods, and the use of herbicide concentrates should be part of an overall lawn care plan that includes proper mowing, watering, and fertilization practices for a healthy and weed-resistant lawn.

Question: will it damage shrubs and flowers
Answer: Keep the spray away from any type of ornamental flowers or Shrubs. It is made for lawn weed control only, not flower beds. You may try using preen granules around your flower beds. If you use colored mulch around those flowers and shrubs you will help control the weed population and enhance the beauty of the shrubs and flowers. Hope this helps. Steve
Question: how may square feet does the entire 40 ounces of the product treat
Answer: According to the manufacturers (Bayer's) directions 3.2 fl. oz. mixed in one gallon of water treats 500 sq. ft. - So your 40 fl. oz. divided by 3.2 equals 12.5, then times 500 gives you 6,250 sq.ft.Anthony

Answer: yes Quinclorac 1.61%

User questions & answers

Question: How long before you see results? I used it on an end of hose sprayer, and not seen a change in 2+ weeks. Thx
Answer: You will need to spot treat the weeds as well before seeing results. Use a one gallon hand pump sprayer with a few glugs of the chemical, then fill the rest with water. Good luck!
Question: can I use it in an area behind my garage that has poison ivy
Answer: This will work well with most broadleaf weeds, including poison ivy. Watch in a few months: Poison ivy has a strong root system that might survive first application of herbicide. Glyphosphate will do the job too. It will kill anything green.
Question: I understand that this product is also recognized as being "Agent Orange
Answer: It was half of the concoction. The other was 2,4,5-t which is now a restricted use product and can only be bought with a license.
Question: Is this product safe for use on St. Augustine lawns
Answer: 2, 4-D is a generic broad leaf weed killer found in almost all broadleaf herbicides. Since St. Augustine is a grass (and not a broadleaf), 2,4-D will not kill it. However, if used again and again in a particular location, it will eventually kill the St. Augustine which is what I experienced in a small patch which had oxalis (yellow sorrel) weed. I later found out from Texas A&M that oxalis, albeit a broadleaf, is very, very hard to kill since it has underground rhizomes which regenerate the weed even if it appears to have been killed. Their recommendation for a broadleaf weedkiller a homeowner could use (i.e., you don't have to have a applicator's license) was $64.99 for 2 ozs, so I passed. Think I'll try to hand dig my oxalis.

Question: Crown vetch is not listed on label but i gather this is effective on them. Question is: does the same 1oz/gal ratio works? How fast are results
Answer: Yes, same ratio and it will probable die back within 2 weeks.
Question: Why is this not sold in stores in California? It's not available in Lowes or HomeDepot in CA. Is it Banned? Ineffective? I asked Scotts, they dont know
Answer: Review: Website: www.dec.state.ny.us
Question: how many sq feet will it cover and whats the active ingredient
Answer: 3200 sq ft. Active ingredient is Triclopyr, trimethylamine salt 8% 5.74% Triclopyr acid equivalent (0.49 lb / gal)
Question: I recently put grass seed. Right after lots of clover type weeds have come up. Will it be ok to put this weedicide now
Answer: Not recommended. Many grass seedlings are very sensitive to herbicides depending upon the variety. In my experiencethat herbicide will kill mature red fescu in the recommended concentration and make perennial rye grass look sickly. Establishedbluegrass other grasses will tolerate it. Seedlings of most any grass will be more sensitive to herbicides and fertilizers. Wait untilthe seedlings are a couple of months old before applying herbicide for the clover.

User questions & answers

Question: I am trying to kill violets in my lawn, will this work
Answer: No. You need all kill.
Question: Is this sold in gallon amounts
Answer: Yes it is. The gallon size comes with its own spray nozzle.
Question: Is this ready-to-spray or concentrate? Thanks for clarifying
Answer: Concentrate. The instructions say that 3.2 fl. oz. (6.5 Tablespoons) of this product in 1 gallon of water treats 500 sq. ft.
Question: does this harm lawn grass (fescue, zoysia, etd
Answer: From my experience, the Bayer Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer only killed unwanted weeds. I do not have zoysia grass, so I do not know if the weed killer will kill zoysia grass or not. My guess is that if zoysia grass is tough, the weed killer should not kill it, provided you do not use more than the dosage prescribed. If you are not sure of the results, I would suggest applying the weed killer to a small area and wait a week or so to see what happens before applying the weed killer to your entire lawn.
