14 best kill crabgrass
Killing crabgrass is a common concern for many gardeners and homeowners looking to maintain a healthy, weed-free lawn. Crabgrass is an annual grassy weed that can quickly spread and take over a lawn if not properly controlled. Here are some methods and tips for effectively killing crabgrass:
Preventive Measures:
- One of the most effective ways to deal with crabgrass is to prevent it from germinating in the first place. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring before the soil temperature reaches the threshold for crabgrass germination. This creates a barrier that prevents the weed from sprouting.
Post-Emergent Herbicides:
- If crabgrass has already appeared in your lawn, you can use post-emergent herbicides specifically designed to target crabgrass. These herbicides should be applied when the crabgrass is actively growing, typically in late spring to early summer. Follow the product instructions carefully.
Manual Removal:
- For small patches of crabgrass, you can manually pull it out by hand or with a weeding tool. Be sure to remove the entire plant, including the roots, to prevent regrowth.
Mowing and Lawn Maintenance:
- Maintain a healthy lawn by mowing at the appropriate height and regularly watering and fertilizing. A thick, healthy lawn can help prevent crabgrass from taking root.
Cultural Practices:
- Improve your lawn's density by overseeding with desirable grass species. This can help crowd out crabgrass and other weeds.
Timing is Key:
- Timing is crucial when dealing with crabgrass. Apply herbicides and take preventive measures at the right time of the year to be most effective. Early intervention is often more successful than trying to control well-established crabgrass.
Follow Safety Precautions:
- When using herbicides, always follow safety guidelines provided on the product label. Wear protective clothing, avoid applying on windy days, and keep children and pets away from treated areas until it's safe.
Repeat Applications:
- In some cases, multiple applications of post-emergent herbicides may be necessary to completely eradicate crabgrass from your lawn. Be patient and persistent.
Natural and Organic Options:
- Some gardeners prefer to use natural or organic methods to control crabgrass. These methods may include using corn gluten meal as a natural pre-emergent herbicide or applying vinegar-based solutions as a natural weed killer. While these methods can be less toxic, they may not be as effective as chemical herbicides.
Remember that crabgrass control is an ongoing process, and it may take time and consistent effort to achieve and maintain a weed-free lawn. Combining different strategies, such as preventive measures, herbicides, and good lawn care practices, can help you effectively kill crabgrass and keep it from returning.

Question: | does this product kill wild onions?, if not what does |

Question: | Does this product gave any fertilizer in it? I recently applied weed and feed and had an unexpected thunderstorm wash it away and need an alternative |
Answer: | I couldn’t get it to kill anything |
Question: | will it kill quackgrass |
Answer: | as long as the grass is established, it should in no way affect it. if you lay down a barrier of pre-emergent and then sow grass seed, it would then prevent the grass from germinating properly, if at all. |
Question: | will it kill bind weed |
Answer: | What does the label say? For southern lawns (I live in Orlando, FL), during the summer months only, I use Celsius WG. Very expensive, but a little goes a long way. Mixes at 1 tsp per gallon of water at the standard rate. And this stuff really, really, really, works. It is the only thing I have found that will kill crab grass. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it kill Johnson grass and Dallas grass |
Answer: | It will not kill Dallis grass |
Question: | We have a 2600 sqft lawn and a 4 gallon backpack commercial sprayer. How much drive, water and surfactant should we add to the sprayer |
Answer: | I bought 1/2 gallon of XLR8 for probably 10,000 sf of lawn. I used 2 ounces per gallon + 1 teaspoon or so of surfactant on actively growing crabgrass in a bermuda and fescue central Arkansas lawn this summer. I spot treated the crabgrass, which had taken over probably 25% of the lawn and small patches of it in throughout. I've hit newly sprouted crabgrass or areas that I missed or that survived several times a couple weeks apart, and almost all of the crabgrass is dead. I still have more than 1/2 left. I don't think you would need to spray more than 1/4 of your tank at a time for 2600 sf, I would think 1/2 gallon would last you several years. |
Question: | What is the shelf life of this product |
Answer: | 3 years |
Question: | What is the mixing ratio for the 1/2 gallon and how big area it will cover, and how many times do have to apply. Thank you |
Answer: | Correction to my previous answer to your question: I mix 3oz Drive in 2+ gallons water and apply to 2000+ square feet, not 1000 as stated. This approximates the recommended (maximum) application rate for Bermudagrass of 1.45oz/1000 sqft. Another suggestion is to use 1oz per generous gallon of water per 1000sqft so you could use 3 applications (3oz per year per 1000sqft) and not exceed the manufacturer's limit of 2.9oz per 1000 sqft per year. |

Question: | Can you use this in vegetable and/ or flower gardens |

Question: | difference between this product and roundup for lawns, is either less toxic, less likely to kill grass |
Answer: | I Believe ingredients in Roundup For Lawns are MCPA, quinclorac, dicamba and sulfentrazone. These herbicides are effective on a broad range of weeds This is topramezone, more specific for crabgrass... It works... took 3 weeks for total effect for me ( took almost a week to start seein white) I tested a patch of clover and it worked on that too.. I like that i can spot treat vs layin out a toxic rug for wildlife.. at least they can avoid the spot im workin on.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I applied this to my lawn and 6 hours later it rained. Do I need to reapply and if I do when |
Answer: | This is safe for Centipede. I use it twice a year to kill off Torpedo grass in Louisiana. I use 2.5 oz to 1 gallon of water in a cheap pump sprayer. I learned to spray it after it rains but no additional rain in the forecast when the grass/weeds are actively growing. I spray it in the evening when it is cool since it’s all 90 plus here in New Orleans. This stuff works great! |
Question: | Will this product kill goosegrass or at least prevent it from growing |
Answer: | Per the manufacturer it shouldn't hurt desirable plants |
Question: | I have a scotts speedygreen 3000, what setting should i spread this on |
Answer: | It's a product to make a spray to be used on the leaves of grass like you would use the Ortho ready to use product Grass-B-Gon which costs about $6 for a 24 oz spray bottle. ($24 for 3 at Amazon) The Ortho product would be better to purchase from ace hardware if you only have need for only a single limited use. This concentrated product could be used to mix with water and fill a gallon sprayer (4 oz gal) a couple of times or refill the 24 oz spray container about a dozen times. The Ortho Grass-B-Gon product says not to cut the grass before using to allow it to get to the roots. It is absorbed into the roots from spraying on the leaves and it's effectiveness used on just the soil would be at a minimum greatly decreased if it worked at all. It's a great product for when grasses are mixed in with shrubs in your garden and you can just spray the grasses and a few weeks later they are yellow and dead. Many grasses have underground root systems and merely pulling the exposed grass does not eliminate the grasses from your garden This product can be used on some of an invasive grass taking over your garden and kill them from the root by spreading throughout the root system |
Question: | what if I don't know what type of grass I have |
Answer: | For Ground Application (Broadcast) the product label indicates a water volume of 1 to 10 pints of spray solution per 1,000 sq. ft. and lists the amount of concentrate to add depending on the type of area and height of the weeds. For spot treatment it says 2-3fl. oz. in 1 gallon of final volume of spray solution. Add a 1/2 gallon of water to your spray tank, for annual grasses up to 6" add 2fl. oz. of concentrate then top it up to a gallon with water. For annual grass up to 12" and perennial grass, add 3fl. oz. of concentrate to 1/2 gallon of water in your sprayer then top it off to a gallon with water. Keep agitating the solution during use. |

Question: | How long after treating should I wait before allowing my dog back on the lawn |
Answer: | I believe the bottle has instructions related to re-entry; I recall it was when the grass is dry. |
Question: | how long I have to for application after I water my lawn |
Answer: | You can apply it an hour AFTER you water your lawn . The important step is to not water your lawn for 48hrs after you apply the crabgrass killer. |
Question: | How do you know when all the chemical inside the ready to spray can is used up |
Answer: | You’ll see the slight difference in the color and the bottle will become lighter in weight because the chemical will be used up. I have spots that I give a second spray after the first spray, about a week to 10 days apart. You don’t have to use it all up in one application. |

Answer: | Keep the spray away from any type of ornamental flowers or Shrubs. It is made for lawn weed control only, not flower beds. You may try using preen granules around your flower beds. User questions & answers
Question: | how much do I add to one gallon of water |
Answer: | Most pesticides, herbicides included, require the applicator to wait until the product has dried. |
Question: | How does this quali-pro brand of quinclorac compare to the primesource brand of the product |
Answer: | North Florida. Worked 80% first app. 20% on second app. 5% came back after about 6 weeks. Label said apply no more than 2 times per year... Maybe i missed a few spots on first app. Satisfied for now. |
Question: | Is quali-pro quinclorac 1.5 l liquid herbicide pre-emergent or post-emergent |
Answer: | Celsius WG is a post-emergent herbicide that comes in the form of water-dispersible granules and is an excellent dallisgrass killer. Celsius WG is also great to use on St. Augustine grass, Bermudagrass and other labeled warm-season grasses to control perennial and broadleaf weeds. You should not use a surfactant if it is over 90 degrees it will work without it. Thank You Nina C |
Question: | How has this product performed against torpedo grass |
Answer: | Yes, I have Bermuda grass in my yard and it was not harmed. I'm going to use it as a weed prevention this spring and see if it does well. |

I prefer an application of Scotts fertilizer w/HALTS in the spring. Doing this I get some Crabgrass but generally only around the edges. I use a 1 gallon pump spray so I can apply multiple times. For a whole lawn, wow |
Question: | What is the strength of 2-4-D in this?? is it more hand spectricide. weed stop |
Answer: | I would not recommend buying this product from Amazon until they start using a picture of the actual bottle that has the real front panel showing the concentration and list of ingredients. What is the point of buying a concentrated product when there is no indication of the strength of that concentrate. |
