13 best granular crabgrass killers

Granular crabgrass killers are products designed to control and eliminate crabgrass, a common and invasive weed in lawns and gardens. These weed killers fall under the category of gardening and lawn care and are used to maintain healthy and weed-free outdoor spaces. Here is what you need to know about granular crabgrass killers:

  1. Crabgrass Control: Crabgrass is a type of grassy weed that can quickly take over lawns and garden areas if left unchecked. It is particularly problematic in warm-season climates.Granular crabgrass killers are formulated to specifically target and eradicate this weed.

  2. Active Ingredients: These products typically contain selective herbicides that are effective against crabgrass while sparing desirable grass species. Common active ingredients in granular crabgrass killers include dithiopyr, prodiamine, and quinclorac.

  3. Application: Granular crabgrass killers are applied to the lawn or garden using a spreader. The granules are evenly distributed across the targeted area, ensuring thorough coverage. Timing is crucial, as these products are often applied in the early spring before crabgrass seeds germinate.

  4. Preventive vs. Post-emergent: Some granular crabgrass killers are preventive, meaning they create a barrier that inhibits crabgrass seeds from germinating. Others are post-emergent, designed to kill existing crabgrass plants. Understanding the stage of crabgrass growth is essential for selecting the appropriate product.

  5. Weed and Feed Products: Some granular crabgrass killers are combined with lawn fertilizers in a "weed and feed" formulation. These products not only control crabgrass but also provide essential nutrients to promote the growth of desirable grass species. They are often applied in the early spring or late spring/early summer.

  6. Watering: After applying granular crabgrass killers, it's essential to water the treated area thoroughly. This helps activate the herbicide and ensures it reaches the weed's root system.

  7. Safety: Users should follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when applying granular crabgrass killers. This includes wearing appropriate protective gear, avoiding contact with skin and eyes, and keeping pets and children away from treated areas until the product has been absorbed or watered in.

  8. Effectiveness: Granular crabgrass killers can be highly effective when used correctly. They provide a targeted approach to crabgrass control, helping to restore the health and appearance of lawns and gardens.

  9. Longevity: Some granular crabgrass killers provide season-long protection, while others may require reapplication for ongoing control, depending on the product's formulation and the severity of the crabgrass infestation.

  10. Alternative Methods: In addition to chemical herbicides, there are alternative methods for crabgrass control, such as manual removal, regular lawn maintenance (including proper mowing and watering), and overseeding with desirable grass species to crowd out crabgrass.

In summary, granular crabgrass killers are effective tools for preventing or eliminating crabgrass in lawns and gardens. They contain selective herbicides and can be applied as a preventive measure or to target existing crabgrass growth. Proper application and adherence to safety guidelines are essential for successful crabgrass control and maintaining a healthy outdoor space.

Prevent Weeds All Season Long

Barricade is The Andersons professional-grade pre-emergent weed control. Containing 0.48% of the active ingredient prodiamine, Barricade is one of the best and most cost-effective granular weed preventers on the market. It can be used on established lawns and landscape beds to prevent over 30 grass and broadleaf weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, lambsquarter, henbit and more.

Barricade features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granular (DG) Technology which allows each granule to disperse into thousands of micro particles after coming into contact with water. Because of DG Technology, Barricade can move past the thatch layer of your lawn and into the soil where it prevents the germination of weed seeds.

When To Apply Barricade - Spring and Fall

Barricade is a pre-emergent weed control, which means that is designed to prevent weeds. Application timing is critical to the product's performance.

To prevent summer annual weeds in both northern and southern turf types, apply Barricade in early spring prior to soil temperatures reaching 55 degrees Fahrenheit at a four inch depth. Applying at this time will prevent weed seeds from germinating.

In southern zones, Barricade can be reapplied in the fall to prevent annual winter weeds like poa annua, also known as bluegrass.

Remember, Barricade must receive irrigation or light rainfall of at least .05 inches for the herbicide prevention to activate.

Barricade and Seeding

In the same way that Barricade prevents the germination of weeds, it can also inhibit the germination of turf.

If you already seeded wait 60 days or until after the second mowing, whichever is longer, before you apply Barricade.

How long you should wait to seed or overseed after applying Barricade depends on your climate. Refer to the table below for recommended intervals.

Yard Mastery Prodiamine 65 WDG Professional Pre Emergent Weed Killer Herbicide for Crabgrass, POA Annua and Other Problem Weeds - 5oz Bottle - Water Dispersible Granule

Based on 27 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Prodiamine pre-emergent herbicide in water dispersible granule formulation. This is a 5oz bottle made specifically for DIYers who want small quantities of this professionally formulated pre emergent herbicide to be mixed in water and sprayed out as a liquid. Yard Mastery is proud to bring this to market specifically in a smaller bottle for DIYers. #DIYfirst Prodiamine is a pre-emergent used in spring and fall to stop problem grasses and weeds in lawns. It is best known as a crabgrass and poa annua pre emergent but is also stops other listed weeds including: Barnyardgrass, Carpetweed-04, Chickweed (common), Chickweed (mousear), Crabgrass (large and smooth), Crowfootgrass, Cup grass (woolly), Foxtails (annual), Goosegrass, Henbit, Itchgrass, Johnsongrass (seedling), Junglerice, Knotweed, Kochia, Lambsquarters (common), Lovegrass, Panicum (browntop, fall and Texas), Pigweed, Purslane (common), Pusley (Florida), Rescuegrass, Shepherdspurse, Signalgrass Broadleaf, Speedwell (Persian), Sprangletop, Spurge (prostate), Witchgrass, Woodsorrel (yellow, from seed) Since this is a professional formulation, there are several ways to parse the usage and rates. Our recommendation is to apply two applications in spring for crabgrass, known as “split applications” and each of those should be .183oz/1000 sq ft (5.2g). We recommend weighing product on a scale to be accurate and grams will be the easiest. Mix 5.2 grams of prodiamine 65 WDG in 1 gallon of water and this spray mix can cover 1,000 sq ft.

  • 5OZ BOTTLE - Professionally formulated for DIYers who want small quantities of pre emergent. Enough for 1 entire season on a 10,000 square foot yard.
  • STOP CRABGRASS - Use this in spring and fall to stop crabgrass and poa annua as a pre emergent but this also stops other listed weeds. See full product description below.
  • WATER DISPERSIBLE GRANULE (WDG) - Mix in water and sprayed out as a liquid via pump or battery sprayer. Product must be watered in.
  • SPRING AND FALL APPLICATIONS - Mix .183oz or 5.2 grams of prodiamine 65 WDG in 1 gallon of water and this spray mix can cover 1,000 sq ft.
  • FOR ALL GRASS TYPES - Ok On Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Turf Type Tall Fescue, Bermuda, Zoysia, St Augustine, Centipede and Bahia Grasses.

User questions & answers

Question: I applied this to my lawn and 6 hours later it rained. Do I need to reapply and if I do when
Answer: This is safe for Centipede. I use it twice a year to kill off Torpedo grass in Louisiana. I use 2.5 oz to 1 gallon of water in a cheap pump sprayer. I learned to spray it after it rains but no additional rain in the forecast when the grass/weeds are actively growing. I spray it in the evening when it is cool since it’s all 90 plus here in New Orleans. This stuff works great!
Question: Will this product kill goosegrass or at least prevent it from growing
Answer: Per the manufacturer it shouldn't hurt desirable plants
Question: I have a scotts speedygreen 3000, what setting should i spread this on
Answer: It's a product to make a spray to be used on the leaves of grass like you would use the Ortho ready to use product Grass-B-Gon which costs about $6 for a 24 oz spray bottle. ($24 for 3 at Amazon) The Ortho product would be better to purchase from ace hardware if you only have need for only a single limited use. This concentrated product could be used to mix with water and fill a gallon sprayer (4 oz gal) a couple of times or refill the 24 oz spray container about a dozen times. The Ortho Grass-B-Gon product says not to cut the grass before using to allow it to get to the roots. It is absorbed into the roots from spraying on the leaves and it's effectiveness used on just the soil would be at a minimum greatly decreased if it worked at all. It's a great product for when grasses are mixed in with shrubs in your garden and you can just spray the grasses and a few weeks later they are yellow and dead. Many grasses have underground root systems and merely pulling the exposed grass does not eliminate the grasses from your garden This product can be used on some of an invasive grass taking over your garden and kill them from the root by spreading throughout the root system
Question: what if I don't know what type of grass I have
Answer: For Ground Application (Broadcast) the product label indicates a water volume of 1 to 10 pints of spray solution per 1,000 sq. ft. and lists the amount of concentrate to add depending on the type of area and height of the weeds. For spot treatment it says 2-3fl. oz. in 1 gallon of final volume of spray solution. Add a 1/2 gallon of water to your spray tank, for annual grasses up to 6" add 2fl. oz. of concentrate then top it up to a gallon with water. For annual grass up to 12" and perennial grass, add 3fl. oz. of concentrate to 1/2 gallon of water in your sprayer then top it off to a gallon with water. Keep agitating the solution during use.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it prevent crabgrass
Answer: Yes - this product is very effective in the prevention of crabgrass and other weeds as listed on the product label.
Question: Can this be used on Zoysia Grass
Answer: Yes this may be used in established Zoysia.
Question: What are the spreader settings for a scotts edge guard spreader
Answer: It varies depending on how much of a coat you want to apply. The pictures on the page show that the edge spreader can range from 4 to 7.5
Question: When should I put it down
Answer: In the late winter or early spring. Crabgrass and other annual weeds that you are trying to prevent often germinate after several days with soil temperatures (NOT air temperatures) being around 55 degrees. The microbes in the soil are what break down this pre-emergent and since microbes in the soil are fairly dormant in cold weather, that means you can put this down early, well before the soil reaches 55 degrees and the pre-emergent herbicide will still be active when the soil reaches the temperatures where annual weeds start to germinate. This does not kill the seeds, it stops root development as the seeds germinate so the weed/plant does not reach a stage where it will emerge from the soil and grow. Many lawn care professionals put down their pre-emergent herbicides when the soil temperatures are in the 35-45 degree range to prevent weeds. Oddly, I have yet to see anybody state an actual temperature for the soil as a guide to apply pre-emergence herbicides in he fall...? Keep in mind this will prevent plants from growing, so if you are planning on putting down new grass seed or overseeding to thicken growth in your lawn, this will also prevent desirable plants and grass from germinating as well.

User questions & answers

Question: I'm using this on my mossy pathways to control weeds, esp. poa annua. will it harm ferns, blueberries, mugho? thx
Answer: No....the gate itself is the only structure that crosses the opening. So when you open it that is gone and you just walk like normal.
Question: How long do you need to wait before putting down grass seed
Answer: You need to lift and pull so no a dog nose would not open it
Question: How soon after you water it in after the 48 hours can you mow
Answer: Since it is installed with brackets on each side there isn’t a way to use 2 of them together. It works really well in an open doorway or for stairs as shown in the picture.
Question: What are the active ingredients
Answer: The correct answer is this is a 36 inch gate therefore it opens to 36 inches and when closed it is only 11.5" wide...... Very narrow when closed The other models are 60 inches open/15.5 inches closed.... 84 inches opened/21.5 inches closed and finally 108 inches opened (9FT!!!)/25.5 inches closed. Competitors 60 inch model has a closed width of 25.5 inches for comparison purposes The Keepsafe product has widest opening whilce maintaining the narrowest closure in the industry.......

  • Children and pets can play on lawn immediately after application!
  • Application: Apply 2 times per year: Early Spring before weed seeds germinate, and Early Fall
  • For use on established lawns only. Do NOT use when seeding a new lawn or over-seeding

User questions & answers

Question: Do I use this before or after I fertilize my lawn in the Fall
Answer: I wouldn't necessarily use this in the Fall. September is a nice cool month to do some reseeding, and you can't put this down within 6 weeks of seeding the lawn. I tend to do a March application and a 2nd April application, leaving me a window to seed the lawn in June. Always remember, June and September are the 2 best months to seed your lawn. I also wouldn't put this down in the fall because crabgrass does not tend to germinate in the fall, it germinates in March and April.
Question: Is this effective against crabgrass
Answer: I used it for the first time this season. I couldn't see that it did anything although I understand that it should be used for 3 consecutive seasons to see significant results. I wasn't pleased with the size of the pellets (rabbit food size). It took several rain events for the product to dissolve. Maybe this is better but it just wasn't what I expected. In the spring I plan to use a chemical crabgrass preventer. I'm changing over to a zoysia lawn. Zoysia may go dormant and turn brown in the winter but it requires no watering and less mowing in summer. In a few seasons I won't need any fertilizer or weed killer (except for spot treatments).
Question: Can this be used in the garden as well as the lawn
Answer: Does this kill the grasses that produce those nasty "Foxtails"? I have animals, vegetable garden, etc. and need a better way to kill these weeds/grasses before they produce the foxtails. Trying to "weed-wacker" them down before they get the foxtails is not always possible for me due to health issues.
Question: Is this a good product to use on gravel walkways to avoid weed growth
Answer: Mike McGrath says: Spread even the finest quality corn gluten on established weeds like those walkway ones, however, and you'll simply be feeding them. Mulch, vinegar, flame, hoeing and/or hand pulling are the answer here-and in that large-scale, Master Gardener situation. Yes, you could prevent future weeds by dusting with corn gluten every six weeks, but it would be hugely expensive and you'd be wasting all that great nitrogen fertilizer if there weren't 'wanted' plants growing in that area. (See below.)

User questions & answers

Question: will this harm a Buffalo Grass lawn? It was planted last summer
Answer: Buffalo grass is listed on the label as highly tolerant along with Bermuda which is what I have. It is the best crabgrass weed killer that I have ever used, kills it in a couple of days. It can also be mixed with 2,4-d for a overall grass and broadleaf weed control. I also use methylated seed oil as a surfactant when mixing. Great product!!
Question: Since my existing crabgrass will die in early Fall anyway, will using this before Fall reseeding help to prevent crabgrass from growing next summer
Answer: Quinclorac is a post-emergent herbicide. It is most often used in the control of crabgrass, sedges, and broadleaf weeds. It does not work as a pre-emergent. However on our website you can find pre-emergents for crabgrass. Thank You Nina C
Question: Will it kill Centipede grass
Answer: It's not designed to kill centipede grass, however it can harm a centipede lawn.
Question: How much emulsifier is recommended per gallon
Answer: I used a 50oz soap jug to mix my solution. I put in 35oz of Trimec, 4oz of Quinclorac, and 6oz of Mentholated Seed Oil. Then I shook it for 5 min to mix well. I applied it using a Gilmore hand sprayer set for 4 Tablespoons per gallon.
