14 best dandelion weed controls

Dandelion weed control is an essential aspect of lawn and garden maintenance. Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) are common perennial weeds known for their bright yellow flowers and puffy white seed heads. They can quickly spread and take over your lawn or garden if not properly managed. Here are some methods for controlling dandelion weeds:

  1. Manual Removal: One of the simplest ways to control dandelions is to manually pull them out. Use a weeding tool or your hands to grasp the weed near its base and pull it out, ensuring you remove the entire root. This method is most effective when the soil is moist, making it easier to extract the entire root.

  2. Mowing: Regular mowing of your lawn can help control dandelions. Keeping your grass at the recommended height for your specific grass type will shade the soil, making it less conducive for dandelion growth. Mowing also removes the dandelion flowers before they can turn into seeds.

  3. Herbicides: Herbicides are chemical solutions designed to kill or inhibit weed growth. Selective herbicides target specific types of weeds, including dandelions, while leaving your lawn grass unharmed. Non-selective herbicides, on the other hand, can kill any plant they come into contact with and should be used with caution.

    • Pre-emergent herbicides: Applied before dandelions germinate, these products create a barrier that prevents weed seeds from sprouting.

    • Post-emergent herbicides: These are applied to actively growing dandelions and can be selective or non-selective.

  4. Cultural Practices: Maintaining a healthy lawn through proper watering, fertilizing, and soil aeration can reduce the likelihood of dandelion infestations. Healthy grass can compete more effectively with weeds.

  5. Organic Control: Some gardeners prefer organic methods to control dandelions. These include using vinegar-based sprays, boiling water, or applying corn gluten meal as a natural pre-emergent herbicide.

  6. Professional Services: If your dandelion problem is extensive and hard to control, consider hiring a professional lawn care service. They can assess your lawn's specific needs and use appropriate methods for weed control.

  7. Lawn Care Schedule: Establishing a consistent lawn care schedule that includes regular mowing, fertilizing, and aerating can help prevent dandelion infestations by promoting a healthy, dense grass cover.

Remember that dandelion control may require ongoing efforts, as their seeds can remain dormant in the soil for several years, and new seeds can blow in from neighboring areas. It's essential to monitor your lawn or garden regularly and take proactive measures to keep dandelions in check.

Question: Will this work on dollarweed on St. Augustine grass

Question: Is this product harmful to the environment
Answer: No. The product chemistry is designed to eliminate undesirable lawn weeds through contact with these plant surfaces. The product will leave lawn grasses unharmed and after application the product leaves no harmful residue for insects or animals. The ingredients become inert when and leave soil unaffected..
Question: Will this kill oxalis
Answer: That particular weed is not listed on its weed killing list. My problem was crabgrass.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this harm my Bermuda grass
Answer: This is highly recommended for Bermuda grass which is why I made my original purchase. Don’t put it on too heavy and don’t put it on in the hottest part of the summer. Otherwise it’s an excellent product.
Question: Will this prevent weeds and not kill my moss
Answer: This product does have some pre-emergent in it (isoxaben and dicamba) though it does not prevent as many weeds as something like prodiamine (sp?). Look at the label. The weeds that have the number 1 next to them, this product will kill those weeds and act as a pre-emergent to them. Here is a PDF to the product label that has a better zoom than the amazon pictures. https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/9f/9f2c6180-d51a-484b-a5a3-be86eb622b56.pdf
Question: Does it kill Poison ivy
Answer: Yes! The Season Long Weed Control for Lawns has been tested for effective control of poison ivy.
Question: I hooked it up to my water hose and after 10+ minutes of spraying bottle still shows full, can the dispenser top be bad, on/off switch be bad
Answer: same thing happened to me. luckily i bought two bottles, one of which worked, so i just swapped the sprayer from one bottle to the next. Of course i "treated" my whole lawn before realizing....

  • Application: Apply 2 times per year: Early Spring before weed seeds germinate, and Early Fall
  • For use on established lawns only. Do NOT use when seeding a new lawn or over-seeding

User questions & answers

Question: Do I use this before or after I fertilize my lawn in the Fall
Answer: I wouldn't necessarily use this in the Fall. September is a nice cool month to do some reseeding, and you can't put this down within 6 weeks of seeding the lawn. I tend to do a March application and a 2nd April application, leaving me a window to seed the lawn in June. Always remember, June and September are the 2 best months to seed your lawn. I also wouldn't put this down in the fall because crabgrass does not tend to germinate in the fall, it germinates in March and April.
Question: Is this effective against crabgrass
Answer: I used it for the first time this season. I couldn't see that it did anything although I understand that it should be used for 3 consecutive seasons to see significant results. I wasn't pleased with the size of the pellets (rabbit food size). It took several rain events for the product to dissolve. Maybe this is better but it just wasn't what I expected. In the spring I plan to use a chemical crabgrass preventer. I'm changing over to a zoysia lawn. Zoysia may go dormant and turn brown in the winter but it requires no watering and less mowing in summer. In a few seasons I won't need any fertilizer or weed killer (except for spot treatments).
Question: Can this be used in the garden as well as the lawn
Answer: Does this kill the grasses that produce those nasty "Foxtails"? I have animals, vegetable garden, etc. and need a better way to kill these weeds/grasses before they produce the foxtails. Trying to "weed-wacker" them down before they get the foxtails is not always possible for me due to health issues.
Question: Is this a good product to use on gravel walkways to avoid weed growth
Answer: Mike McGrath says: Spread even the finest quality corn gluten on established weeds like those walkway ones, however, and you'll simply be feeding them. Mulch, vinegar, flame, hoeing and/or hand pulling are the answer here-and in that large-scale, Master Gardener situation. Yes, you could prevent future weeds by dusting with corn gluten every six weeks, but it would be hugely expensive and you'd be wasting all that great nitrogen fertilizer if there weren't 'wanted' plants growing in that area. (See below.)

User questions & answers

Question: How long before pets can enter treated area

Question: Does it say how long before kids can play on the lawn after spraying this
Answer: After Ortho WeedClear Lawn Weed Killer has thoroughly dried, your children can return to the lawn. If you're unsure how long it will take to dry, allow 24 hours.
Question: Is it pet friendly
Answer: Ortho WeedClear Lawn Weed Killer RS3 is safe for pets, such as cats and dogs as long as they are kept out of the treated areas until it's completely dry. Once it has dried, if it rains or is watered, this won't dislodge the product, or cause it to reactivate. If you have any other questions concerning this product, please contact us at 866-324-9192 for further assistance.
Question: Do you put about 4 oz of the concentrate in sprayer with hose/water or is this too much
Answer: The one I purchase was not concentrated. It just hooks on the hose and you turn on the water and start spraying the whole yard with it.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the expiration date of this product
Answer: Yes my bag was also expired and this stuff damaged my lawn and left the weeds. Would never purchase this product
Question: Does this work to get rid of Poa Annua
Answer: Use a Pre-Emergent in Late Summer The Poa annua seeds produced in the spring wait patiently in the soil for the cooler temperature of fall to arrive before they sprout. You can stop them from sprouting by applying a pre-emergent weed control product, like Scotts® WeedEx™ Prevent with Halts®, in early fall (August through early September). Follow up your pre-emergent weed control application with an application of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food to help your lawn recover from the stresses of summer and keep it thick and green.
Question: In central KY am I considered southern or northern for weed control
Answer: I also live in central Kentucky. Not so important for weed control but it is important for grass seed. Go with northern to be safe.
Question: How long after application before I can plant new seed
Answer: Normally it’s 3-4 weeks. Keep in mind, I always spread a thin layer of top soil later and throw down seeds and starter fertilizer. I do not throw seed directly on grass.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it kill Bermuda grass
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry! Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer will prevent label listed weed seeds from germinating. Bermuda grass is not label listed, so Preen Extended will not prevent new Bermuda grass seeds from germinating.
Question: Can I sprinkle this into a bush or flower bed that had weeds growing out of it or will it hurt my existing plant too
Answer: Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer; The area must first be weed free (to include the underground parts, too), then sprinkle on dry weed free soil around any of the compatible/recommended plants listed on its label (do not apply around any plant that is not listed), and then water. Reapply every 6 months for continued labeled listed weed seed prevention. Thank-you!
Question: Is there a safe amount if time after using preen that i can put down seeds & bulbs in my tilled & weed free area? Thanks
Answer: I believe that the Preen description states that it is effective for 6 months. I take that to mean that it is still partially effective for a period of time after that 6months. Therefore, I would wait several months longer before planting seeds. As a sheer guess, at about 9 months some seeds may not germinate so your yield of plants from seeds might be less than optimum but better than zero, and after 12 months, the effects should be gone. But then by that time, there will likely be some fresh weed seeds blown in from elsewhere. Bulbs don't really germinate like seeds so Preen may not effect them but this I really don't know.
Question: How long after application is the area safe for pets to walk on
Answer: Once the area has dried from the first initial rain/watering they may enter the treated area. Thank you!

Remove Existing Weeds

Remove any existing weeds, taking care to remove their roots. Preen Extended Control products for landscape beds do not kill existing weeds.

User questions & answers

Question: does this product kill wild onions?, if not what does
Answer: There is no residual for GroundClear Weed and Grass Killer, so once the weeds have died you should be able to replant.
Question: Does this product gave any fertilizer in it? I recently applied weed and feed and had an unexpected thunderstorm wash it away and need an alternative
Answer: I couldn’t get it to kill anything
Question: will it kill quackgrass
Answer: as long as the grass is established, it should in no way affect it. if you lay down a barrier of pre-emergent and then sow grass seed, it would then prevent the grass from germinating properly, if at all.
Question: will it kill bind weed
Answer: What does the label say? For southern lawns (I live in Orlando, FL), during the summer months only, I use Celsius WG. Very expensive, but a little goes a long way. Mixes at 1 tsp per gallon of water at the standard rate. And this stuff really, really, really, works. It is the only thing I have found that will kill crab grass.

The Andersons Pro Turf Barricade Granular Pre-Emergent Weed Control … (50lb.)

The Andersons

Based on 414 reviews Check latest price

User questions & answers

Question: Does it prevent crabgrass
Answer: Yes - this product is very effective in the prevention of crabgrass and other weeds as listed on the product label.
Question: Can this be used on Zoysia Grass
Answer: Yes this may be used in established Zoysia.
Question: What are the spreader settings for a scotts edge guard spreader
Answer: It varies depending on how much of a coat you want to apply. The pictures on the page show that the edge spreader can range from 4 to 7.5
Question: When should I put it down
Answer: In the late winter or early spring. Crabgrass and other annual weeds that you are trying to prevent often germinate after several days with soil temperatures (NOT air temperatures) being around 55 degrees. The microbes in the soil are what break down this pre-emergent and since microbes in the soil are fairly dormant in cold weather, that means you can put this down early, well before the soil reaches 55 degrees and the pre-emergent herbicide will still be active when the soil reaches the temperatures where annual weeds start to germinate. This does not kill the seeds, it stops root development as the seeds germinate so the weed/plant does not reach a stage where it will emerge from the soil and grow. Many lawn care professionals put down their pre-emergent herbicides when the soil temperatures are in the 35-45 degree range to prevent weeds. Oddly, I have yet to see anybody state an actual temperature for the soil as a guide to apply pre-emergence herbicides in he fall...? Keep in mind this will prevent plants from growing, so if you are planning on putting down new grass seed or overseeding to thicken growth in your lawn, this will also prevent desirable plants and grass from germinating as well.

Product features

Prevent Weeds All Season Long

Barricade is The Andersons professional-grade pre-emergent weed control. Containing 0.48% of the active ingredient prodiamine, Barricade is one of the best and most cost-effective granular weed preventers on the market. It can be used on established lawns and landscape beds to prevent over 30 grass and broadleaf weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, lambsquarter, henbit and more.

Barricade features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granular (DG) Technology which allows each granule to disperse into thousands of micro particles after coming into contact with water. Because of DG Technology, Barricade can move past the thatch layer of your lawn and into the soil where it prevents the germination of weed seeds.

When To Apply Barricade - Spring and Fall

Barricade is a pre-emergent weed control, which means that is designed to prevent weeds. Application timing is critical to the product's performance.

To prevent summer annual weeds in both northern and southern turf types, apply Barricade in early spring prior to soil temperatures reaching 55 degrees Fahrenheit at a four inch depth. Applying at this time will prevent weed seeds from germinating.

In southern zones, Barricade can be reapplied in the fall to prevent annual winter weeds like poa annua, also known as bluegrass.

Remember, Barricade must receive irrigation or light rainfall of at least .05 inches for the herbicide prevention to activate.

Barricade and Seeding

In the same way that Barricade prevents the germination of weeds, it can also inhibit the germination of turf.

If you already seeded wait 60 days or until after the second mowing, whichever is longer, before you apply Barricade.

How long you should wait to seed or overseed after applying Barricade depends on your climate. Refer to the table below for recommended intervals.

User questions & answers

Question: I wonder if this really work? I sprayed mine last Friday, and it's been 5 days, and there is no differences on hose the dandelion looks
Answer: If this product contacts those dandelion when sprayed, you should see evidence of those weeds dying after 5 to 10 days. Give it a few more days; but, if you get no results, Scotts will refund or replace.
Question: What is the coverage for this bottle
Answer: The 5000 Sq. Ft. answer is WRONG! Per the label, coverage for one quart (32 ounce bottle) is 6000 sq. ft. for specified southern lawns (not all southern grasses will survive this herbicide) and 4000 sq. ft. for northern lawns (bluegrass, fescue, rye).
Question: Safe on St Augustine grass
Answer: I have had no difficulty with it on this grass it is great product and easy to use
Question: Can I pour the product in a different sprayer since the new design sucks?ks
Answer: Scotts did send out a replacement bottle that did work right and I was able to very carefully open the bad ones to use in another sprayer. I had an old sprayer from another product that worked fine.
Question: How often shouldyou fertilze with 10 10 10 after a new sod installation?10 10 10 was put on when laid. It has been 3 weeks...is it safe to put add
Answer: 4-5weeks
Question: can i use this as a winter application
Answer: It is probably not the best choice. The active herbicide only works on actively growing plants, and should not affect anything that is dormant. The fertilizer mix is intended for newly planted grass. If you are growing new grass and have actively growing weeds , then it's perfect for the winter. If you are South of New Orleans, this could be sensible. I plan to use it to kill active broadleaf weeds and hope to give some bahia a hard time when it wakes up. I will overseed hybrid bluegrass to the shaded areas of a mixed centipede/st augustine/sand spur lawn. Technically, it's winter in February... It also just hit 75 degrees, and our soil temp is headed north of 55. Most people call that spring.
Question: is this product kill existing weed? and how can i use
Answer: Apparently is only a preventer, I had to kill crab grass before applying this. Crab grass is very strong, maybe it can kill other weaker weeds.
Question: What is the n-p-k content
Answer: 21-22-4
