13 best crabgrass weed killers

Crabgrass weed killers are herbicides specifically designed to target and eliminate crabgrass, a common and persistent weed that can infest lawns and gardens. Crabgrass (scientifically known as Digitaria) is an annual grass weed that often thrives in warm-season grasses like Bermuda grass, Kentucky bluegrass, and others. It competes with desirable grasses for nutrients, sunlight, and water, making it a nuisance for homeowners striving to maintain a healthy and attractive lawn.

Here are some key points about crabgrass weed killers:

  1. Pre-Emergent vs.Post-Emergent: Crabgrass weed killers come in two primary types: pre-emergent and post-emergent.

    • Pre-emergent herbicides are applied before crabgrass seeds germinate. They form a barrier in the soil that prevents crabgrass from sprouting. Timing is crucial, as pre-emergent herbicides should be applied before soil temperatures reach the range for crabgrass germination.

    • Post-emergent herbicides are used after crabgrass has already emerged from the soil. They target the actively growing plants and work to kill them. Post-emergent herbicides are typically used when pre-emergent control was not applied in time.

  2. Active Ingredients: Crabgrass weed killers contain various active ingredients. Common ones include dithiopyr, pendimethalin, prodiamine, and quinclorac for pre-emergent control. For post-emergent control, ingredients like quinclorac, fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, and mesotrione are commonly used.

  3. Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the product label for proper application. It's important to apply crabgrass weed killers evenly and at the correct rate to ensure effective control.

  4. Safety: Always take safety precautions when using herbicides. Wear protective clothing, gloves, and eye protection. Keep children and pets away from treated areas until the product has dried.

  5. Reseeding: In some cases, crabgrass weed killers may harm desirable grasses along with the crabgrass. You may need to reseed or overseed your lawn after applying the herbicide to fill in any bare spots.

  6. Long-Term Management: Effective crabgrass control often involves a combination of strategies, including proper lawn maintenance, regular mowing, and maintaining a healthy, thick lawn. Pre-emergent herbicides can be part of a broader weed management plan.

  7. Environmental Considerations: Be mindful of the environmental impact of using herbicides. Follow guidelines for proper disposal of unused products and containers, and avoid applying them near water bodies or in windy conditions.

It's important to choose the right crabgrass weed killer for your specific needs and follow the instructions carefully to achieve the best results in maintaining a crabgrass-free lawn or garden.

Question: will it damage shrubs and flowers
Answer: Keep the spray away from any type of ornamental flowers or Shrubs. It is made for lawn weed control only, not flower beds. You may try using preen granules around your flower beds. If you use colored mulch around those flowers and shrubs you will help control the weed population and enhance the beauty of the shrubs and flowers. Hope this helps. Steve
Question: how may square feet does the entire 40 ounces of the product treat
Answer: According to the manufacturers (Bayer's) directions 3.2 fl. oz. mixed in one gallon of water treats 500 sq. ft. - So your 40 fl. oz. divided by 3.2 equals 12.5, then times 500 gives you 6,250 sq.ft.Anthony

Answer: yes Quinclorac 1.61%

User questions & answers

Question: does this product kill wild onions?, if not what does
Answer: There is no residual for GroundClear Weed and Grass Killer, so once the weeds have died you should be able to replant.
Question: Does this product gave any fertilizer in it? I recently applied weed and feed and had an unexpected thunderstorm wash it away and need an alternative
Answer: I couldn’t get it to kill anything
Question: will it kill quackgrass
Answer: as long as the grass is established, it should in no way affect it. if you lay down a barrier of pre-emergent and then sow grass seed, it would then prevent the grass from germinating properly, if at all.
Question: will it kill bind weed
Answer: What does the label say? For southern lawns (I live in Orlando, FL), during the summer months only, I use Celsius WG. Very expensive, but a little goes a long way. Mixes at 1 tsp per gallon of water at the standard rate. And this stuff really, really, really, works. It is the only thing I have found that will kill crab grass.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it kill Johnson grass and Dallas grass
Answer: It will not kill Dallis grass
Question: We have a 2600 sqft lawn and a 4 gallon backpack commercial sprayer. How much drive, water and surfactant should we add to the sprayer
Answer: I bought 1/2 gallon of XLR8 for probably 10,000 sf of lawn. I used 2 ounces per gallon + 1 teaspoon or so of surfactant on actively growing crabgrass in a bermuda and fescue central Arkansas lawn this summer. I spot treated the crabgrass, which had taken over probably 25% of the lawn and small patches of it in throughout. I've hit newly sprouted crabgrass or areas that I missed or that survived several times a couple weeks apart, and almost all of the crabgrass is dead. I still have more than 1/2 left. I don't think you would need to spray more than 1/4 of your tank at a time for 2600 sf, I would think 1/2 gallon would last you several years.
Question: What is the shelf life of this product
Answer: 3 years
Question: What is the mixing ratio for the 1/2 gallon and how big area it will cover, and how many times do have to apply. Thank you
Answer: Correction to my previous answer to your question: I mix 3oz Drive in 2+ gallons water and apply to 2000+ square feet, not 1000 as stated. This approximates the recommended (maximum) application rate for Bermudagrass of 1.45oz/1000 sqft. Another suggestion is to use 1oz per generous gallon of water per 1000sqft so you could use 3 applications (3oz per year per 1000sqft) and not exceed the manufacturer's limit of 2.9oz per 1000 sqft per year.

User questions & answers

Question: does this item have 2 wands to go with it
Answer: No only one
Question: Does this kill clover
Answer: It did not seem to kill our clover. We have red clover w yellow flowers& reg. Green clover. It was used on it a couple of x’s but is nice & healthy.
Question: Will this get rid of quackgrass
Answer: yes
Question: How much do I use for crabgrass
Answer: This stuff contains Quinclorac which is the same stuff we used commercially with good results. The thing about crabgrass, (or any undesirable grasses), is they take a long time to kill. You can up the dosage but take the risk of killing the good grass as well. When Crabgrass starts to die, it first turns colors or red, purple or orange. It will not disappear completely like dandelions or any broadleaf. However it will not come back the next year. That said, this Quinclorac does not prevent any new seeds from sprouting which is what you might have had. Crabgrass puts out a tremendous amount of seeds each year if not killed early enough. (They only spread by seeds and all of it dies at the first frost. ) The key is to hit it hard and often early when it first sprouts before it goes to seed. Any weed seeds can last up to 5 years in the soil before they germinate depending on the soil moisture and temperature. This is why you may see new weeds when you disturb the soil in any way. A lush thick lawn will keep the soil temps down and many seeds will rot before germinating. This is why crabgrass and other weeds tend to sprout next to driveways, etc. because the temps are higher. A neglected, (problem) lawn can take 3-4 years of constant attention to become weed free. Your first application in the spring should be a strong fert with pre-emergent. This will kill off any seeds, (including grass seeds), that try to germinate. Pre-emergent lasts about 90 days. As the temps get hotter, back off on the fert, (unless you water in between the raindrops), and spot treat weeds as needed. No need to weed control the whole lawn as this is a waste. In the fall as temps drop and rain comes back, step up the fert and weed killer again. If you plan to spread new seed wait until fall. The temps are lower, there is usually more rain, the pre-emergent is done, and traffic on the lawn is mostly done. When reseeding, stay off the lawn as much as possible. No foot traffic, dogs, or weed control. I always told my customers to seed an area that they could cover with a few sprinklers and an automatic timer. Otherwise the seed won't take. Also, stay off the lawn when there is frost on it as you can kill the grass. Unfortunately, a very lush, thick lawn is fairly expensive as it can require a lot of water and or chemicals. A full sun lawn requires much more water than a shaded lawn, but recovers from damage quicker. The best lawns I have seen had an underground sprinkler system and had a good, timed lawn care service. Once we got the weeds under control in such a lawn, they required little, if any, weed killer.

Answer: tenacity is labeled for nutsedge. . Dismiss is the the better choice, however. Usually with tenacity, you have to apply it at least two to three times, at two week intervals. They are both broad spectrum. Tenaciity's claim to fame is its ability to kill grassy weeds, like Nimblewill. They are both labeled for Goose grass. I don't think Dismiss is labeled for Nimblewill. PS: spectricide makes a good 4 way for the home owner. It has 24d, dicamba, quinchlorac, and sulfantrazone (dismiss). spelling. they sell it on amazon and lowes.
Question: can i apply over
Answer: The official answer is no for most herbicides. Depending on what you're trying to control. Here is a link to one of the best reports I have found - http://archive.lib.msu.edu/tic/golfd/article/2012oct33.pdf. This report shows great results with mid-80 degree temperatures in the control of POA ANA (Which is what I'm challenged with controlling). The general rule of thumb with Tenacity is the higher the temperatures the more applications (small dosage) needed for control. Tenacity has a half-life of 5-15 days depending on the temperatures - the higher temperatures the lower the half-life. The report and other reading also indicates that Tenacity needs to stay in the plant at or above the half life levels for ~ about 14 days or so to gain a high level of control. My advice would be to look for a week when temperatures are expected to average below 90 degrees and make a couple applications during that week and observe the control that you achieve - then goo from there. I experimented for a couple seasons using this report to get a feel for the best application frequency, rates, temperatures and timing (time of year). I hope this is helpful. Good luck and all the best.
Question: what is surfactant? Is it included with tenacity
Answer: A surfactant is a separate product that you add to your applicator tank. It helps the Tenacity stick to leaf blades and better kill the weeds. I used Bonide Turbo spreader sticker. It, or something similar is available in small bottles in garden centers. The ratio I used for nimblewil was 1 teaspoon of Tenacity and four teaspoons of surfactant per 1 gallon of Water.

Yard Mastery Prodiamine 65 WDG Professional Pre Emergent Weed Killer Herbicide for Crabgrass, POA Annua and Other Problem Weeds - 5oz Bottle - Water Dispersible Granule

Based on 27 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Prodiamine pre-emergent herbicide in water dispersible granule formulation. This is a 5oz bottle made specifically for DIYers who want small quantities of this professionally formulated pre emergent herbicide to be mixed in water and sprayed out as a liquid. Yard Mastery is proud to bring this to market specifically in a smaller bottle for DIYers. #DIYfirst Prodiamine is a pre-emergent used in spring and fall to stop problem grasses and weeds in lawns. It is best known as a crabgrass and poa annua pre emergent but is also stops other listed weeds including: Barnyardgrass, Carpetweed-04, Chickweed (common), Chickweed (mousear), Crabgrass (large and smooth), Crowfootgrass, Cup grass (woolly), Foxtails (annual), Goosegrass, Henbit, Itchgrass, Johnsongrass (seedling), Junglerice, Knotweed, Kochia, Lambsquarters (common), Lovegrass, Panicum (browntop, fall and Texas), Pigweed, Purslane (common), Pusley (Florida), Rescuegrass, Shepherdspurse, Signalgrass Broadleaf, Speedwell (Persian), Sprangletop, Spurge (prostate), Witchgrass, Woodsorrel (yellow, from seed) Since this is a professional formulation, there are several ways to parse the usage and rates. Our recommendation is to apply two applications in spring for crabgrass, known as “split applications” and each of those should be .183oz/1000 sq ft (5.2g). We recommend weighing product on a scale to be accurate and grams will be the easiest. Mix 5.2 grams of prodiamine 65 WDG in 1 gallon of water and this spray mix can cover 1,000 sq ft.

  • 5OZ BOTTLE - Professionally formulated for DIYers who want small quantities of pre emergent. Enough for 1 entire season on a 10,000 square foot yard.
  • STOP CRABGRASS - Use this in spring and fall to stop crabgrass and poa annua as a pre emergent but this also stops other listed weeds. See full product description below.
  • WATER DISPERSIBLE GRANULE (WDG) - Mix in water and sprayed out as a liquid via pump or battery sprayer. Product must be watered in.
  • SPRING AND FALL APPLICATIONS - Mix .183oz or 5.2 grams of prodiamine 65 WDG in 1 gallon of water and this spray mix can cover 1,000 sq ft.
  • FOR ALL GRASS TYPES - Ok On Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Turf Type Tall Fescue, Bermuda, Zoysia, St Augustine, Centipede and Bahia Grasses.

Answer: I believe the bottle has instructions related to re-entry; I recall it was when the grass is dry.
Question: how long I have to for application after I water my lawn
Answer: You can apply it an hour AFTER you water your lawn . The important step is to not water your lawn for 48hrs after you apply the crabgrass killer.
Question: How do you know when all the chemical inside the ready to spray can is used up
Answer: You’ll see the slight difference in the color and the bottle will become lighter in weight because the chemical will be used up. I have spots that I give a second spray after the first spray, about a week to 10 days apart. You don’t have to use it all up in one application.

Question: How well does this work on poison ivy
Answer: a stronger solution works well
Question: How well does this work on poison ivy
Answer: Surprisingly, this worked on most of my simple weeds, I do not have poison ivy to kill but my first thought is this is not strong enough to eliminate that tuff invasive weed. I believe one of the popular brands actually makes a poison ivy killer. I googled "can vinegar kill poison ivy" and the answer is yes, white vinegar will kill poison ivy, though it might take a few days to notice. Fill your garden sprayer with straight, undiluted white vinegar and take aim at the poison ivy leaves and crowns. Other sites say to heat the solution with salt and add dish soap. All the articles mention it will take time, possibly a week and you might need to reapply. So maybe this would work but probably not as quick as you would like and not in one application. I would buy something better that works faster.
Question: Can you use this on artificial turf
Answer: Hello, Thank you for your question. Eco Garden Pro is non selective, and will work to eliminate all weeds, grass, and moss varieties. It should be perfectly safe for your synthetic astroturf. If you are concerned, apply to a smaller area first to spot test the product.
