14 best crab grass seeds

Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) is a common weed that can be a nuisance in lawns and gardens. It's an annual grass weed that tends to grow vigorously during the warmer months of the year and can quickly take over your lawn if left unchecked. Here's some information about crabgrass seeds and how to control them:

  1. Crabgrass Seeds: Crabgrass reproduces primarily through seeds. The seeds are small, round, and can vary in color from light brown to reddish-brown. They are produced in seed heads at the top of the plant and can fall to the ground, where they may remain dormant until conditions are suitable for germination.

  2. Germination: Crabgrass seeds typically germinate in the spring when soil temperatures reach around 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit (13-16 degrees Celsius). They thrive in areas with full sunlight and can quickly colonize thin or bare spots in lawns.

  3. Preventive Measures: To prevent crabgrass from taking hold in your lawn or garden, consider using pre-emergent herbicides. These products create a barrier in the soil that prevents crabgrass seeds from germinating. Apply these herbicides in early spring before the soil temperature rises to the point where crabgrass seeds would start to germinate.

  4. Post-Emergent Control: If crabgrass has already sprouted, post-emergent herbicides can be used to kill the existing plants. These herbicides are most effective when applied while the crabgrass is still young and actively growing.

  5. Cultural Practices: Maintaining a healthy lawn through proper mowing, watering, and fertilizing can also help prevent crabgrass infestations. A thick, well-nourished lawn can outcompete crabgrass and other weeds.

  6. Manual Removal: For small infestations, you can manually remove crabgrass by hand, being sure to pull up the entire plant, including the roots.

  7. Mulching: In garden beds, using mulch can help prevent crabgrass by blocking sunlight and making it difficult for seeds to germinate.

  8. Regular Maintenance: Consistent care and maintenance of your lawn and garden are essential to keep crabgrass under control. Regularly inspect your lawn for signs of weed growth and take appropriate measures promptly.

  9. Selective Herbicides: Some selective herbicides are formulated to target crabgrass without harming desirable grasses in your lawn. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions when using any herbicide.

Remember that effective crabgrass control often involves a combination of strategies, including preventive measures, chemical treatments, and good lawn care practices. It's important to tailor your approach to your specific lawn or garden conditions for the best results.

User questions & answers

Question: It is not clear to me just what is lncluded. Is it 1 item or 2 and just what of each
Answer: 1 item
Question: Can you apply in fall in the deep south or should i wait till spring? thanks
Answer: You should be able to apply it in the fall as long as you are watering sufficiently. People often make the mistake of not watering plants just because it's cool. Fall planting would actually give the plants more time to get started. I planted Bermuda grass with my centipede knowing that centipede "sleeps, creeps and leaps" and takes a number of years to get thick and established enough to crowd out other weeds and grasses.
Question: Does this contain fertilizer ? If so, what is the Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium equation
Answer: Just seed from what I could tell. Mine didn't grow tho, and I tried twice.
Question: how long do I wait to planr seed afte using a weed and feed product not designed for new seed
Answer: I have read 3-4 days

CATS

Cat Grass grown in the home is the purest way to give your cat a healthy and beneficial treat! Seeds grown under your own roof allow you to control how much grass is grown and how often. This is incredibly beneficial if you wish to maintain a balanced snacking diet for your furry friend. Cat grass can also be grown in a large rectangular pattern that creates a grass bed for your cat to play in. By growing Cat Grass from seed you are eliminating external toxins from effecting the seedlings while also extending the life cycle of your growing grass. By maximizing grass growth you are exposing your cat to a longer period of nutrient-rich snacking. Cat Grass is not a meal replacement, although it does contain several vitamins that are beneficial to your feline's health & longevity.

Benefits of Digesting Cat Grass:

  • Good Source of Fiber
  • Aids in Digestion
  • Cleans Pallet and Teeth
  • Enjoyable Snack!
  • Full of Vitamins and Minerals
  • All-Around Healthy Green

RABBITS

Wheat grass seed grown for rabbits is recommended in smaller containers that can hook and attach to shelter walls. Be careful not to hook wheat grass container too high where your bunny cannot reach. Remember to mist the grass every few days with water to help hydrate the foliage and your rabbit. For rabbits that are sensitive eaters you can cut blades of grass and add to normal food pellets.

HENS & ROOSTERS

Growing wheat grass seed for chickens is recommended in large, flat containers or trays that resemble a grass bed. We suggest fastening a layer of wire atop of the grass to allow it to grow upwards and through the wire — this allows for a large amount of grass to be grown at various heights, making it easy for chickens to pluck taller strands without damaging seeds below.

PARAKEETS

Add scenery and privacy to your bird house with long growing beds of wheat grass seed. Parakeets will enjoy an additional component to their habitat to play, hide, and snack. We recommend growing seed in a flat tray at the bottom of the bird house. This will allow for privacy and a feeling of security while on the ground level of their home.

DOGS

Minerals found in Wheat Grass can be incredibly soothing to a dog's upset stomach. That is why dogs often chew on grass or nearby foliage when they are having digestive stress. It is recommended to grow wheat grass in a medium size container that is accessible in the yard. For inside the home choose a container that is relative to your dog's size and eating patterns.

Perfect Plants Seeds Will Sprout Within the First Week of Planting!

Loosely pack Perfect Plants Seed Starter to the brim of your container. Evenly distribute seeds across the top of the soil — sprinkle seed starter over top of seeds and water thoroughly first time. Seeds will sprout even if not completely covered by soil.

*DO NOT PLANT SEEDS TOO DEEP*

Baby sprouts have a hard time pushing through heavy soil above. Lightly spray your seeds 2-3 times a week to avoid over-watering, do not use a watering can.

WHEAT GRASS FOR JUICING

Wheat Grass is a well-rounded juicing green that benefits the body in several aspects. Nutrition enthusiasts recommend one 2.8oz. "shot" of Wheat Grass Juice a day to help regulate the body and flush out toxins. For those who are just beginning Wheat Grass intake, start with a 1oz. shot a day and build up to a full 2.8oz.

Question: What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see
Answer: How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass.
Question: What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s
Answer: Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark
Question: Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate
Answer: No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone tried growing this in southern Idaho
Answer: Not sure, but you may ask golf courses there...
Question: Would I be able to get a Phytosanitary certification on this product
Answer: It's not an import, and you'll only need it if you're exporting to another country.
Question: What type of zoysia is it? That question was not answered
Answer: Zoysia grass. The kind Scott sells.
Question: Is scotts zoysia grass ok for central il? neighbors appear to have it (telltale yellow in winter). i plan to seed into fescue/ bluegrass w/ 5-6hr sun
Answer: It will be probably be ok in Illinois. I have it in PA and it does fine. But it does turn white in early winter and stays that way till May till all of the dead grass disappears. The advantages in my opinion far out way the that. They are, when it fully takes hold, the thickness, slow growing, drought resistance, and it chokes out weeds because it is so thick. However I did not have good luck with this seed and planting plugs are a pain in the but. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these phytosanitary certified
Answer: The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified.
Question: will it grow in shade in ok
Answer: No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate.
Question: Can I use it up north
Answer: Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer.
Question: How many square feet will this cover
Answer: A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this grass seed okay to use in full sun zone 5 climate
Answer: There are no grass seeds in our Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action for Seeding. This product is formulated to help grow new grass, and control against weeds while feeding and strengthening grass.
Question: Can this seed be used to overseed
Answer: The Cat Grass seeds will sprout, but they may not fully grow! I would recommend putting them in some sort of growing medium.
Question: When should I fertilize after laying down the seed? Also what fertilizer should I use
Answer: I'm not 100% positive but most grasses are pretty particular (locations, shade, etc). I would imagine they need soil? All cat grasses are like 2-3 species and I've had some a little fussy to even grow in soil if I have too much water or too much sun.
Question: I'm in north texas and currently have bermudagrass, st. augustine, and some patches with other grasses. do i need to remove existing grass for this
Answer: Yes it is purrfect for indoor and outdoor cats and dogs too.

Zenith Zoysia Grass Seed

Zenith is medium-textured and has dark green leaves. It creates a dense, slow-growing, low-maintenance turfgrass that can tolerate traffic and wear better than most warm season lawns. Zenith is commonly used in both commercial and residential landscapes, sport fields, golf courses, roadsides, and medians. Uniquely, it tolerates extreme heat and cold and is the best Zoysia for cooler climates. It’s well adapted for climates from the southern coast of the US to the upper transition zone. Establishing a lawn with Zenith Zoysia seed is easier, faster, and cheaper than plugging.

Planting instructions are enclosed with each order of Zenith Zoysia.  It is very important that the seed bed remain moist until the seeds have germinated (14-21 days after planting).

Commercial Use
Golf Course
Zenith Zoysia is a low maintenance option for home lawns, sports fields and parks

When To Seed?

The best time to sow Zenith seeds is in mid-spring after the last frosts are expected.

Your latest summer or fall Zenith seed planting date is best determined by your growing zone. The standard guideline is to plant Zenith seed a MINIMUM of 60 days before you expect the first frost in the fall. If seed is planted too late in your growing season, even if it germinates, it might not have sufficient time to become hardy enough to survive fall and winter conditions.

User questions & answers

Question: can it be spread over existing grass
Answer: I do not know where Zone 5 is, but this grass LOVES full sun, does best with 1" of water per week after maturity and is thick and beautiful. Previous to zoysia we had a yard of fescue grass which was a nightmare to keep alive in the summer. We live in the South and the sun was too hot, we needed to water the grass constantly and every fall we ended up spending near $1000 replanting the grass which died over the summer. We prefer to have geen grass all year long, but have found the dormant brown grass tolerable because of it's durability. We love out Zoysia, and it gets full sun!
Question: will this grow in hot tempatures like in AZ
Answer: Filling in bare spots is doable, but trying to fill in thin spots that have some coverage is not good. Most of the seed will fail and not germinate from too little sunlight in the early germination phase. If you have existing Zoysia, it will spread and fill in over time. If you do not and you want Zoysia, I strongly recommend getting a soil test (including micro-nutrients) and letting the grass grow a little taller than normal, then spray the entire area you wish to plant with Glyphosate, wait 10-14 days, mow the dead grass and bag it, then spray Glyphosate on the entire area a second time to kill any plants that were missed. I would also recommend doing this after the spring weeds have germinated as by the time you see these spring annual weeds, most warm season annual weeds will have germinated and by spraying everything with Glyphosate, you'll have some time before many annual weeds start to germinate again. Till the soil, the top 2-3 inches is enough, then level out the lawn with a rake for the larger rough spots, roll the lawn (you can rent one from the local Lowe's or Home Depot, or local landscaping store perhaps) the best you can with a rake or a drag mat which is much faster/easier if you have one available. Next, rough up the very top 1/4 inch of soil using a stiff rake, then using a hand held spreader (I used an electric Scott's Wizz spreader for better control), spread half your seed in one direction, then put down the other half at 90 degrees, then do the same with your starter fertilizer. You can roll the lawn again to give good seed to soil contact, or I found that just after seeding and fertilizing, applying water for 5-10 minutes using an oscillating sprinkler and this will wet the soil enough to level it out and cover your seed. Water enough to keep the top of the soil moist for the duration. I say an oscillating sprinkler because these work better than the impact sprinklers by far. Get a timer you can attach to your water spigot so you can automate the watering schedule as if you allow the soil to dry out, you'll likely kill the seed. I had this problem because I bought cheap oscillating sprinklers and one died, and the one I used to replace it died so I had a patch dry out and most of that area did not germinate successfully, so I came back and seeded that spot again the following spring. I also added some Milorganite for organic matter, but it isn't required. I think most of the negative reviews are from people that didn't keep the seed bed moist properly because seed needs to stay in moist soil (ANY seed) to properly germinate. Treat weeds while they are very young for the best chance of killing them and before they reach a mature stage and start dropping seeds.
Question: Are there directions on the bag, do I need additional products
Answer: Most people start with a 10-10-10 starter fertilizer and apply it at the time of seeding, but as the seller stated, a soil test is key. If you have not done much to take care of the soil over the years, you may want to get an in depth soil test. The basic test provides your soil pH, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are the macro-nutrients. The in depth report also provides the broad scale of micro-nutrients such as boron, iron, manganese, magnesium, copper, calcium and so on. There is plenty of information online on how to take soil for a soil test. I think you take your soil sample from 6 inches deep (please double check). If you're going after a fine lawn, you'll probably want a soil plugger as you'll have a few spots that may fill in thin, or something will happen and you'll want to fill in a damaged spot with plugs to speed up recovery, etc. So I recommend a soil plugger for this, but also for doing your soil test. Copy and paste the text below into the Amazon search bar and you'll see the one I found. You can take plugs from 2", 4" and 6" deep, so as the years go on and you want to do follow up soil tests, you can simply take a 6" deep plug (from multiple locations around the lawn), cut off the bottom inch, put about an inch of soil in the bottom of the plug hole, then return the original plug back to the hole and all is well. This will avoid making a much larger hole using a small shovel, and since the plug is a perfect fit, it really should not damage your pre-emergent protection barrier. This plugging tool is made in the USA out of carbon steel. Just keep it clean to avoid rust as rust will alter the results of your soil test. Question: Is this seed organic
Answer: If you really want a Zoysia lawn, you should get rid of any existing grasses. I'm not familiar with St. Augustine, but I know Bermudagrass is tenacious and will fight against the Zoysia. Zoysia may take over, but if you have other turf grasses, then the new Zoysia will be competing for the water and nutrients in the soil and take much longer to grow and fill in. And once you have the Zoysia going WITH these other grasses, you then lose the ability to spray a total vegetation killer like Glyphosate because you'll take out the Zoysia along with the unwanted grasses. The less competition the Zoysia has, the faster it will spread and fill in and the healthier it will be. Just be sure to plant 120-150 days before the first frost to give the Zoysia plenty of time to germinate, establish and start spreading. If you don't have the Zoysia down long enough to mow it at least 4-5 times before fall hits, it will be too young to use pre-emergent herbicides and once the Zoysia goes dormant, with no pre-emergent, you'll end up with a lawn full of winter weeds while the Zoysia is napping. That is what happened to me. Mother Nature screwed me over. I killed everything in my lawn, mowed it once it all was dead, then sprayed again to kill any lingering grass/weeds. Then I rented a sod cutter and removed the top 2 inches of soil from my yard and tilled the soil. I did a soil test in there as well, which is one of the MOST important steps. Then we had massive amounts of rain and I had to wait to use the drag mat to level out my lawn. Then I was ready to throw my seed down and the weather called for bad thunderstorms and massive amounts of heavy rain, so I postponed seeding. These same weather reports persisted for pretty much a month. I wish I'd put my seed down at that first rain because that one month of rain was 100% soft, slow and gentle rain which would have been perfect for new seed, but that month delay put me about 60 days from the first frost, but I had no choice then as I'd cleared the soil. My Zoysia is just now starting to come out of winter dormancy, and it is full of winter weeds because I planted late and could not use any pre-emergent herbicides. No worries though. The seller of this seed is quick to respond to questions and recommended just mowing low and frequently to keep the weeds trimmed back and to minimize any seeds, and bag the clippings to remove unwanted weed seed, and once the weather gets warmer, most of those weeds will die off and the Zoysia will fill in and crowd out most of the other weeds. I don't know what height I'm mowing at, but I'm guessing it is around 1.25 to 1.5 inches, so as the Zoysia starts coming back, it will already be trained for that height and cutting most weeds that low will keep them weakened so when the time comes, I may be able to just spot spray herbicides to kill specific weeds, and when fall comes I'll be able to put down pre-emergent herbicides and get ahead of winter weed germination and stop the weeds before they emerge. That's why I say to get the seed down 120+ days before the first frost, so you'll have time to get well established, and be able to put down a per-emergent to stop the weeds from taking over your lawn over the winter. Many people plant an annual ryegrass in the fall (I think, I've not done this), so they have green cool season grass over the winter, and the annual ryegrass will die off the following spring or summer, allowing you to have green grass year round, and the awesome Zoysia turf.

Prep, Apply, Water

Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!

*Subject to proper care.

Prep

Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.

Apply

Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.

Water

A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.
