12 best corn gluten weed controls

Corn gluten weed control is a natural and environmentally friendly method used to prevent and control weeds in lawns and gardens. It is a byproduct of the corn milling process and contains proteins that inhibit weed seed germination. Here's what you need to know about corn gluten weed control:

  1. Weed Prevention: Corn gluten meal works primarily as a pre-emergent weed control method, meaning it prevents weed seeds from germinating and growing into mature plants. It doesn't work effectively on existing weeds.

  2. Timing: Timing is crucial when using corn gluten. It should be applied before weed seeds germinate, typically in early spring and late summer. For warm-season weeds, apply it in late winter.

  3. Application: To use corn gluten as a weed control, spread it evenly over your lawn or garden at the recommended rate. Water it in thoroughly after application to activate the proteins.

  4. Effectiveness: Corn gluten is most effective against annual weeds like crabgrass, dandelions, and foxtails. It may not be as effective against perennial weeds or weeds with an established root system.

  5. Environmental Benefits: Corn gluten is considered an eco-friendly weed control option because it's a natural product and poses minimal risk to humans, pets, and wildlife. It also adds nitrogen to the soil as it breaks down.

  6. Limitations: While corn gluten is a safe and natural alternative to chemical herbicides, it may not provide complete weed control on its own. Some weed seeds may still germinate, so it's best used in combination with other weed control methods.

  7. Commercial Products: There are commercial corn gluten-based weed control products available in various forms, such as granules or powder. These products often come with specific application instructions.

  8. Persistence: The effects of corn gluten may last for several weeks, depending on environmental conditions. Reapplication may be necessary to maintain weed control throughout the growing season.

  9. Alternative Methods: While corn gluten is a viable option for weed control, other methods such as mulching, hand weeding, and using herbicidal soaps can be used in conjunction with it for more comprehensive weed management.

  10. Compliance: Ensure that you follow local regulations and guidelines for the use of corn gluten or any other weed control methods in your area.

In summary, corn gluten weed control is a natural and eco-friendly method for preventing the germination of weed seeds in lawns and gardens. It is best used as a part of an integrated weed management strategy and should be applied at the right time to maximize its effectiveness in preventing annual weeds.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I use this before or after I fertilize my lawn in the Fall
Answer: I wouldn't necessarily use this in the Fall. September is a nice cool month to do some reseeding, and you can't put this down within 6 weeks of seeding the lawn. I tend to do a March application and a 2nd April application, leaving me a window to seed the lawn in June. Always remember, June and September are the 2 best months to seed your lawn. I also wouldn't put this down in the fall because crabgrass does not tend to germinate in the fall, it germinates in March and April.
Question: Is this effective against crabgrass
Answer: I used it for the first time this season. I couldn't see that it did anything although I understand that it should be used for 3 consecutive seasons to see significant results. I wasn't pleased with the size of the pellets (rabbit food size). It took several rain events for the product to dissolve. Maybe this is better but it just wasn't what I expected. In the spring I plan to use a chemical crabgrass preventer. I'm changing over to a zoysia lawn. Zoysia may go dormant and turn brown in the winter but it requires no watering and less mowing in summer. In a few seasons I won't need any fertilizer or weed killer (except for spot treatments).
Question: Can this be used in the garden as well as the lawn
Answer: Does this kill the grasses that produce those nasty "Foxtails"? I have animals, vegetable garden, etc. and need a better way to kill these weeds/grasses before they produce the foxtails. Trying to "weed-wacker" them down before they get the foxtails is not always possible for me due to health issues.
Question: Is this a good product to use on gravel walkways to avoid weed growth
Answer: Mike McGrath says: Spread even the finest quality corn gluten on established weeds like those walkway ones, however, and you'll simply be feeding them. Mulch, vinegar, flame, hoeing and/or hand pulling are the answer here-and in that large-scale, Master Gardener situation. Yes, you could prevent future weeds by dusting with corn gluten every six weeks, but it would be hugely expensive and you'd be wasting all that great nitrogen fertilizer if there weren't 'wanted' plants growing in that area. (See below.)

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use on a DG path
Answer: The only thing I can think of that may be an issue is the on/off toggle that's operated with a thumb. While holding the handle, you would push for on and then pull back for off. It's glides smoothly but is a little tight as a valve should be. But still very easy to push with a thumb. The quick connect coupling that attaches to the hose is very easy to use. It's well balanced in the hand and comfortable to hold for long periods of time.
Question: What is thw shelf life? This was asked before but i do not see an answer.....debating 1 vs 2.5 gallon buy...thanks
Answer: Germany. Best watering products ever.
Question: Will this kill invasive vines and shrubs? Looking for an organic product that can do that and having trouble finding
Answer: Hi ... so sorry its taken so long to reply ... the wand was stored in a shed .... and we hadn't pulled things out for the season yet ... nevertheless ... the wand is 24 inches, the watering head is 5 inches and the handle is 6 inches. We bought two of the metal wands last season and one of another model and all have performed well ... the metal wand which you are considering seem a bit sturdier. Good Luck with your decision. cliff
Question: How long until you can plant in the sprayed area? I need to clear weeds before putting in ground cover
Answer: Yes, this wand has its own quick connect. I have had my wand for a year now. We just removed the wand out of winter storage and other than changing out the washer, the wand looks like it should last for another year.(I hope a few more years!)

User questions & answers

Question: Can you spray it without a hose
Answer: Not this version. It attaches to a hose and use water to distribute it. I suppose you could dilute it with water in a smaller spray bottle, but that doesn't seem like it would be worth the effort.
Question: i don't see anything about coverage. It comes in a half gallon. How far will that go
Answer: The bottle says 2000 square feet.
Question: Is there an odor after application
Answer: Did not detect any odor. I applied it in Feb. before the weeds began germinating. Had good results.
Question: Is this non-GMO
Answer: Do not know. I wanted to find out also. Thanks for asking. Hopefully someone will respond. The packages are not marked GMO free. So I doubt. In fact none of the Corn Gluten packages - liquid or granules - I have used are marked GMO free or non-GMO.

Stop Weeds From Growing, Before They Start

The best way to control weeds in your lawn and garden is to prevent them from growing there in the first place. Weed Prevention Plus by Concern is an easy-to-use, effective pre-emergent herbicide, which means it kills weeds before they sprout. By applying to your lawn, garden and flowerbeds at the first signs of spring, you can tackle weeds underground - before they become a problem. Made of 100% corn gluten meal - a by-product of the cornstarch manufacturing process - Weed Prevention Plus is all natural, non-burning, odor-free and won’t harm surrounding lawn, plants or wildlife.

Naturally Promotes Green Up and Leaf Growth

Not only does corn gluten safely prevent young weeds from germinating, but it also promotes green up in established lawns and plants. Corn gluten is naturally high in nitrogen, which is an essential nutrient that makes your lawn greener, faster.

Lawns

Spread Weed Prevention Plus across your entire lawn in early spring to prevent weeds and to promote a fast green up. One 5 lb. bag will cover up to 250 sq. ft.

Fruit/Vegetable Gardens

Use this natural herbicide freely around sprouted edible crops up until the day of harvest. Be sure to wait 6 weeks after application to plant new seeds.

Flowerbeds

Protect your precious flowers and bulbs from weed destruction with a nitrogen-rich formula that simultaneously nourishes established plants.

Walkways and Driveways

Sprinkle in between cracks of walkways, driveways and patios to prevent weeds from sprouting and destroying your foundation.

Apply a Pre-Emergent Herbicide

Weed Prevention Plus is best used at the onset of spring, before weeds begin to grow (when crocuses begin to bloom or when forsythia blooms start to drop), and in late summer. Be sure to apply when the forecast shows no rain for a few days following application. Wait 6 weeks to plant any new grass, flowers, vegetables or ornamentals.

Spray Established Weeds

Because Weed Prevention Plus is so rich in Nitrogen, it won’t kill established weeds - it will only promote their growth. Instead, spray a contact herbicide for organic gardening, like Safer Brand Weed & Grass Killer, directly onto sprouted weeds.

Cover Dead Weeds with Mulch

Prevent re-growth of the weeds you killed by placing mulch on top of the sprayed area.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work on goat head weeds
Answer: Works on all plant types, you need to apply during the specific plants seed germination period. So knowing when that plants seed germinate in your area, as this is a pre imergant, If you apply at wrong time, since this is also a very powerful fertilizer, your targeted weed will grow really well. My guess is apply product in early spring for best results, and expect 60% effectiness, which BTW is better that chemical pre imergents.
Question: liter concentrate or 1 liter of the mixed per 1000 square feet ? I know it has to be diluted to use
Answer: It's before dilution. The container says it covers 10,000 sq ft. The container holds 2.64 gallons, when converted to metric is 10 liters. So 10,000 sq ft divided by 10 liters is 1 liter per 1000 sq ft, undiluted. Seems to me they should state this clearly somewhere, we shouldn't have to do detective work to figure it out.
Question: Hello, is this product labeled "pre-emergent herbicide" or weed control
Answer: Pre-emergent , will act as fertilizer on seeds that are up and growing.
Question: How many ounces , tsp or tbs, per gallon in a hose-end sprayer
Answer: I use a 20-gallon hose end sprayer, so I just fill the sprayer & it automatically portions out 1 oz/gallon.

User questions & answers

Question: what kind of spreader & on what setting
Answer: I set a Scotts Speedygreen 2000 on 9. I saw a pretty fair improvement in lawn health last year.
Question: Will this work in flowerbeds to prevent weed germination? Looking for an organic alternative to Preen
Answer: It's not a weed killer. In my experience, it makes the grass grow faster and thicker and thus the weeds are squeezed out and don't get a good foothold. But in flower beds, you're not growing grass.
Question: Will this help get rid of clover
Answer: As far as my experience goes with corn gluten in general it will not affect clover. It's only effective against germination of dandelion seeds and only in the common ones found in the Midwest. Not the different types found in the Northwest.
Question: How many square feet does it cover
Answer: if I rember correctly -it would have been enough to do my whole yard(average subdivision lot) ...go to dirt doctor.com and search this on howard's site..

Product features

Prevent Weeds All Season Long

Barricade is The Andersons professional-grade pre-emergent weed control. Containing 0.48% of the active ingredient prodiamine, Barricade is one of the best and most cost-effective granular weed preventers on the market. It can be used on established lawns and landscape beds to prevent over 30 grass and broadleaf weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, lambsquarter, henbit and more.

Barricade features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granular (DG) Technology which allows each granule to disperse into thousands of micro particles after coming into contact with water. Because of DG Technology, Barricade can move past the thatch layer of your lawn and into the soil where it prevents the germination of weed seeds.

When To Apply Barricade - Spring and Fall

Barricade is a pre-emergent weed control, which means that is designed to prevent weeds. Application timing is critical to the product's performance.

To prevent summer annual weeds in both northern and southern turf types, apply Barricade in early spring prior to soil temperatures reaching 55 degrees Fahrenheit at a four inch depth. Applying at this time will prevent weed seeds from germinating.

In southern zones, Barricade can be reapplied in the fall to prevent annual winter weeds like poa annua, also known as bluegrass.

Remember, Barricade must receive irrigation or light rainfall of at least .05 inches for the herbicide prevention to activate.

Barricade and Seeding

In the same way that Barricade prevents the germination of weeds, it can also inhibit the germination of turf.

User questions & answers

Question: is it suitable for iris? (iris have very shallow roots
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry! Preen Garden Weed Preventer can safely be applied as label directed around up and growing established Iris plants that are from bulbs only (not rhizomes, etc.)
Question: How long do I need to wait to plant
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry! There is no waiting time required. Please be advised that during the 2 - 3 months the product is active in the soil, you do not want Preen granules to contact the roots of those plants as you place them in the transplant holes. We suggest you scrape the top layer of soil away from the area and dig the hole. Set the plant into the hole and backfill with untreated soil or a bagged garden soil. You may then distribute the treated soil you moved aside back around the plant . If Preen granules come in direct contact with plant roots, it can stunt the root development.
Question: Should i spread this at.the end of the season for spring planting or wait till.spring
Answer: If you are planting seeds wait until they sprout. This and other forms of Preen prevent seeds from coming up. If you plant seedlings or plants I would spread now and after planting in Spring.
Question: Which is better, spread product and then plant or plant first then spread Preen
Answer: My only experience is with bushes- I spread then plant. I don’t know about smaller plants like flowers- I don’t know how preen effects sprouting. I love this all natural corn gluten preen- it’s safe for my pets and the small wildlife in my yard.
