14 best scotts weed and feeds
Scotts Weed and Feed is a popular product used in lawn care and gardening to address two common lawn issues simultaneously: weeds and the need for fertilization. Here's what you need to know about Scotts Weed and Feed:
Weed Control: Scotts Weed and Feed contains herbicides designed to target and control common lawn weeds such as dandelions, clover, crabgrass, and other broadleaf weeds. It helps to eliminate these unwanted plants, promoting a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing lawn.
Fertilization: In addition to weed control, this product also serves as a fertilizer. It provides essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N-P-K) to nourish your grass and help it grow thicker, greener, and healthier.
Application: Scotts Weed and Feed is typically applied using a spreader, which evenly distributes the granules across your lawn. It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding application rates and timing for the best results.
Seasonal Timing: The timing of application is crucial for effective weed control and fertilization. Scotts Weed and Feed is usually applied in the spring or fall when weeds are actively growing and the lawn needs a nutrient boost.
Lawn Health: Proper use of this product can help improve the overall health of your lawn by promoting grass growth and reducing competition from weeds. A healthy lawn is more resistant to pests and diseases.
Varieties: Scotts offers different varieties of Weed and Feed products tailored to specific lawn care needs and grass types. Be sure to choose the right product for your particular lawn and its requirements.
Caution: While Scotts Weed and Feed is effective, it should be used with caution. Carefully follow the instructions on the packaging to avoid over-application, which can harm your lawn, and to ensure safe use around pets and children.
Effectiveness: The effectiveness of Scotts Weed and Feed may vary depending on factors such as the type of weeds in your lawn, the condition of your grass, and proper application. For severe weed infestations, multiple applications may be necessary.
In summary, Scotts Weed and Feed is a convenient lawn care product that combines weed control and fertilization. It can help you achieve a lush and weed-free lawn when used correctly and in accordance with the provided guidelines. Using a spreader for even distribution and applying it at the right time of year are key to its effectiveness in maintaining a healthy and attractive lawn.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have some leftover. Can I use this in the spring |
Answer: | Thank you for inquiring about Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed 3, 5,000 sq. ft. This may also be applied in late spring (April, May or June) when weeds are actively growing with temperatures between 60° - 90° but the nutrient content is specifically geared for a fall application. |
Question: | What size is this/coverage/square footage |
Answer: | 15M - "Covers up to 15,000 sq. ft." |
Question: | Can this be applied with the scotts winter guard? If it isn’t which should I apply first and how long should I wait in between |
Answer: | Recommend you verify with Scott’s on line or telephone Customer Service. My understanding is these products should not be used together in one season. One is fertilizer plus weed killer. The other just fertilizer. Use of both in a short interval will burn the turf. Again, check with the experts at Scott’s. |
Question: | What is the N-P-K of this product |

User questions & answers
Question: | I wonder if this really work? I sprayed mine last Friday, and it's been 5 days, and there is no differences on hose the dandelion looks |
Answer: | If this product contacts those dandelion when sprayed, you should see evidence of those weeds dying after 5 to 10 days. Give it a few more days; but, if you get no results, Scotts will refund or replace. |
Question: | What is the coverage for this bottle |
Answer: | The 5000 Sq. Ft. answer is WRONG! Per the label, coverage for one quart (32 ounce bottle) is 6000 sq. ft. for specified southern lawns (not all southern grasses will survive this herbicide) and 4000 sq. ft. for northern lawns (bluegrass, fescue, rye). |
Question: | Safe on St Augustine grass |
Answer: | I have had no difficulty with it on this grass it is great product and easy to use |
Question: | Can I pour the product in a different sprayer since the new design sucks?ks |
Answer: | Scotts did send out a replacement bottle that did work right and I was able to very carefully open the bad ones to use in another sprayer. I had an old sprayer from another product that worked fine. |
Question: | How often shouldyou fertilze with 10 10 10 after a new sod installation?10 10 10 was put on when laid. It has been 3 weeks...is it safe to put add |
Answer: | 4-5weeks |
Question: | can i use this as a winter application |
Answer: | It is probably not the best choice. The active herbicide only works on actively growing plants, and should not affect anything that is dormant. The fertilizer mix is intended for newly planted grass. If you are growing new grass and have actively growing weeds , then it's perfect for the winter. If you are South of New Orleans, this could be sensible. I plan to use it to kill active broadleaf weeds and hope to give some bahia a hard time when it wakes up. I will overseed hybrid bluegrass to the shaded areas of a mixed centipede/st augustine/sand spur lawn. Technically, it's winter in February... It also just hit 75 degrees, and our soil temp is headed north of 55. Most people call that spring. |
Question: | is this product kill existing weed? and how can i use |
Answer: | Apparently is only a preventer, I had to kill crab grass before applying this. Crab grass is very strong, maybe it can kill other weaker weeds. |
Question: | What is the n-p-k content |
Answer: | 21-22-4 |

User questions & answers
Question: | It is ok to put Weed and Feed after putting this product but before 30 days are over. Says at the back to wait for 30 days before another application |
Answer: | You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon. |
Question: | I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass |
Answer: | In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him! |
Question: | How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn |
Answer: | you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK |
Question: | Okay to use in August |
Answer: | I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum. |

Question: | I just used the Summerguard. But I also have a huge problem with clover. How soon can I apply the Weed & Feed after using the summerguard |
Answer: | I also applied this and have a clover issue... Scott’s recommends 4-6 weeks in between feedings. 30 days would be the shortest time with a minor risk of burning your lawn. |
Question: | Does it affect pets in the yard? I've got 2 dogs and 2 cats in the yard daily! One of each is sensitve to flea and tick treatments |

Answer: | From the scotts website:ants, armyworms, billbugs, chiggers, chinch bugs, crickets, fleas, grasshoppers, mole crickets, mealy bugs, sod webworms (lawn moth larvae), spiders, ticks, weevils. |

How to use
1) Check the Weather: If rain is in the forecast in the next 24 hours, apply another day. Rain can wash the particles off of weed leaves before it has a chance to work properly.
2) Fill and Set Spreader: Applying Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed requires a lawn spreader. If you need a new spreader, you can find one here. Refer to the Spreader Settings section above to set your spreader properly.

For even application walk at a steady pace slightly overlapping each pass. After applying this product you don't water your lawn for at least 24 hours. Just like rain, watering your lawn after applying Weed & Feed washes the weed control particles off of weed leaves before they can fully work.

User questions & answers
Question: | My house is a new construction home so our backyard has nothing the seed they put barely grew. Would this work for grass to grow |
Answer: | Yes - but, first apply a thin layer of fertilizer, then sprinkle in into your soil a bit before applying Scotts 30158 and watering according to instructions on the package. You will want to wait until the grass is at least 3-1/2" before mowing and use only a push type mower for the first several months. Don't cut lower than about 3". |
Question: | What are the actual grasses in the mix |
Answer: | Perennial eyeglass, red fescue and bluegrass. |
Question: | Has anyone in Colorado tried this or someone in an arid high altitude region? What did you think of your results |
Answer: | You should grow grass you can smoke in Colorado. |
Question: | How many Sq ft is covered |
Answer: | The 40 pound bag covers 4000 sq. ft. |

User questions & answers
Question: | would it work well for powdered lime |
Answer: | Just bought a Classic Drop Spreader for use with pulverized (powdered) lime. Worked great with a 40 lb. bag and a setting of 14. Took a few passes to use up the bag at the recommended application rate found on the bag of lime. Cross (perpendicular) application was recommended by the lime supplier. Tried to apply a bag of lime with a rotary spreader (Scotts 2000) and wound up with clogging due to the insufficient hole size even at a setting of 11. Recommend you use granular lime with the rotary spreader. Seems to work well for me with the Scotts 2000. |
Question: | can you buy replacement tires |
Answer: | Replacement wheels are available from Scotts. Please reach us through the "Contact Us" page on scotts.com. |
Question: | Does it say where this spreader is made |
Answer: | The spreader is made in California. |
Question: | How is the spread when used for salt in the winter? Does it have a good spread or does it just trickle to the floor with very little spread |
Answer: | I bought this 5 years ago and only use for salt in the winter, the metal frame finally gave out in the beginning of the 6th winter. Spreads salt fine as long as the wheels turn. Not great for built up ice pack on driveway. Works great for normal use at home. |
