14 best mix with potting soils
Mixing with potting soils is a common practice in gardening to improve soil quality, drainage, and nutrient content. Gardeners often customize their potting soil blends to suit the specific needs of their plants. Here's what you should know about mixing materials with potting soils:
Compost: Adding compost to potting soil enriches it with organic matter, improves water retention, and provides essential nutrients to plants. Compost also enhances soil structure and encourages beneficial microorganisms.
Perlite: Perlite is a lightweight volcanic mineral that is often mixed with potting soil to improve aeration and drainage. It prevents soil compaction and helps roots access oxygen.
Vermiculite: Vermiculite is another lightweight mineral additive used to increase moisture retention in potting soils. It helps maintain a consistent level of moisture around plant roots.
Peat Moss: Peat moss is an organic material that can be mixed into potting soil to improve water retention. It also adds acidity to the soil, which is beneficial for acid-loving plants like azaleas and blueberries.
Sand: Adding sand to potting soil improves drainage and prevents waterlogging, especially for plants that prefer well-draining soil conditions.
Coconut Coir: Coconut coir, derived from coconut husks, is a sustainable alternative to peat moss. It enhances water retention, aeration, and nutrient retention in potting soil.
Fertilizers: You can mix slow-release or granular fertilizers into potting soil to provide a steady supply of nutrients to plants over time. Alternatively, liquid fertilizers can be applied periodically during watering.
Lime: Lime is used to adjust soil pH.If your potting soil is too acidic, adding lime can help raise the pH level to a more neutral range.
Organic Matter: Mixing in well-rotted compost, leaf mold, or other organic matter improves soil structure, fertility, and microbial activity in the potting mix.
Mulch: Applying a layer of mulch on top of potted plants helps conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth.
Pumice: Pumice is a lightweight volcanic rock that can be mixed with potting soil to improve aeration and drainage. It is particularly useful for succulent and cacti mixes.
Grit: Grit, such as granite or small gravel, can be added to potting soil to enhance drainage and prevent root rot in plants that are sensitive to excess moisture.
When mixing materials with potting soils, it's essential to consider the specific requirements of the plants you're growing. Different plants have varying preferences for soil moisture, pH levels, and nutrient content. Additionally, make sure the potting mix is well-blended to ensure an even distribution of materials. Regularly monitoring the health of your plants and adjusting your potting soil mix as needed will help you maintain healthy and thriving garden specimens.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the Espoma Organic african violet potting mix contain enough perlite to sustain the plants |
Answer: | No, the soil ph meter can only test the soil ph level. I found this item is useful to help me to get the answers how much water I need to keep the best wet of my plants. Even I can got the reference of the PH level of soil. Moreover, I also can get the answers how much light my plants need. It is very interesting. |
Question: | What is the very small bug (like a nat slowly flyig around my velvet plant, what damage will it do and a home remedy for getting rid of it , with out |
Answer: | Buy one. If your plants are close together in a small area, set it to the moisture, sunlight or Ph level what ever one of these you want to test. Once you have moved the button stick thin in the ground 2-4 inches. Set a timer for 10 min. Then, and this is important, look at the reading while this tester is still in the ground. Once it’s pulled out it zeroes out. If your plant are spread out in a wider area, go to each area with this tester and repeat the steps as I explained. You only need this one tester, unless you have lots of money and want to buy a truckload of these. It’s quite easy. |
Question: | Several new violets; sat several days before I repotting using new bag of your soil. Now that area is swarming with little black bugs |
Answer: | The instructions don't specifically say you can or can't leave the monitor in place but I have for moisture and it seems to be okay. |
Question: | What are all the ingredients listed on the back of the package |
Answer: | No, it's very easy to use, there's a mini user manual in the package, just read it before use. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this soil suppose to smell bad?! It smells like sewage |
Answer: | You can ad some if you want to. I used to. But the Espoma I think uses a higher grade of ingredients and the Spagnum used feels so spongy (I also think they put very fine ground-up lime in it- a friend of mine said this)....my African Violets seemed to do just fine when I began using it straight. I do mix one tablespoon Fizzy fresh Hydrogen peroxide in one gallon water and water with this about once every two months. I read years ago from a master gardener that AV LOVE oxygen around their deep roots and fizzy HP gives the roots the oxygen they need plus hemorrhages the nat eggs. Those little nats actually don't harm the AF but live in the surface soil and lay their eggs there and it is an ugly nuisance to see a beautiful flower and nasty little bugs hovering about. Google the benefits of using Hydrogen Peroxide on ALL your houseplants for the benefit of getting rid of nats AND giving your plants needed oxygen. Since I don't put more Perlite in my mixes anymore I worried about the dirt packing with time and depriving my plants of the Oxygen and many good gardeners recommended HP.....know it sounds weird but I promise it does work. Google it and read up before you try it. I have beautiful houseplants besides AV and LOVE the Espoma Organic potting soil, pricey as it is. Good Luck |
Question: | Does it say where this product/soil is from |
Answer: | I got rid of the gnats by spraying the topsoil with ortho home defense after I watered for about a month or so. If they are indoor plants this works great, don't bother if you keep them outside. You will always get more because gnats live and breed in the soil. |
Question: | Can I use this on avocado plant |
Answer: | YIKES that has NEVER happened to me. I do soak my AV Pots for a time in a tub of hot water and about a cup of bleach to hopefully kill any fungus spores or insect eggs (hopefully)......Also there are "Peat" mites that feed on rotting bark, and plant materials commonly used in creating potting soils....they are awful to see hopping around like tiny fleas in the soil around the plant. They are harmless to the plant but you do not want these in your home feasting on the naturally, small, bits of bark and stuff. A solution of one tablespoon fizzy hydrogen peroxide to a half-gallon water helps to put much appreciated Oxygen available to your African Violet roots and hemorrhage the eggs the peat mites have laid in your soil. They will eventually return and then you need to retreat again. All houseplants usually get these little peat fleas and the Hydrogen Peroxide helps in many ways. Google this and see it is a common problem. A treatment of Magnesium Sulfite (Epsom Salts dissolved in water) also helps ALL plants but particularly house-potted plants as they become mineral depleted in the confines of a pot. |
Question: | Can I use this for other indoor plants |
Answer: | According to the package: "This product is formulated from 50-60% sphagnum peat moss, peat humus, perlite, and dolomite limestone to adjust pH." |

User questions & answers
Question: | whats the life of this bag of soil? I have a half of bag left that i brought 2 years ago. Is it still good to use now |
Answer: | Our Miracle Gro African Violet Potting Mix can be used to pot all ornamental plants. It is not recommended for in ground use. |
Question: | I am going to order this, based on the comments. Regarding the bug issue, when I purchase used clothing from second-hand stores, I put the whole bag in the freezer, which you could also do with this soil, for overnight. Should kill everything alive |
Answer: | I got that message as well, but I tried a different seller on Amazon and I was able to have it shipped to me. |
Question: | Do we put this under a layer of soil or to put charcoal under this or just use this? I'm potting my succulents in a pot without drainage |
Answer: | I have always bottom watered my A violets, but I would mix this soil 50/50 with vermiculite then use Miracle Gro A Violet liquid fertilizer mixed 7 drops to a quart. Violets like air around their roots and will damp off if they have wet feet. I water every 5 days and allow about an hour for the plants to pull moisture into the pot, then drain. I get NO sun and only poor light but my plants grow and bloom like crazy under the lamps on my end tables. This also works well for starting new plants from leaves. |
Question: | What are the ingredients |
Answer: | I have used it on other plants without any problems. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this shipped in a box |
Answer: | It’s a sunscreen so it should prevent you from tanning. It has a tint so you will get some temporary color on your skin. |
Question: | How many gallons is 1.5 Cu |
Answer: | Don’t think so |
Question: | How well was this packaged |
Answer: | I didn’t think it got any darker when reapplying. I really love this product and wish it was slightly darker. |
Question: | How many bags I need to fill 10 3gal pots |
Answer: | People really gave you some weird answers. Smh what they mean by tinted is that it has a slight brown color (typically iron oxide). When it’s rubbed in you won’t be able to tell that it’s tinted. Typically mineral sunscreen will leave a white cast (it will make your skin look ghostly white), but because this is tinted it doesn’t leave a white cast. It doesn’t look or feel like makeup. It isn’t for a starter tan smh. It’s to prevent the white cast and offers people with melasma some protection from visible light. 👌🏼 |

Question: | Does this take the place of soil, or does it get mixed with soil |
Answer: | It smells disgusting and the texture is hardly different from my regular potting soil. That smell really turned me off this product. |
Question: | Would this be good for roses |
Answer: | No, nothing was written on the bag. I got it out to check. All it says is the % of the mix. |
Question: | when reconstited i know it expands some but how well does it hold together? or does it fall apart |
Answer: | I don't know why you couldn't use this soil for an avocado plant. It is a mixture that drains well, so if you need a light soil that drains well, it will probably be good. |
Question: | Does this reconstitute to a powdery or fibrous material? Thanks |
Answer: | It is definitely a sandy soil. I would not use it in general for all plants. |

Question: | what is soil volume when wet |
Answer: | Roughly same volume just different mass. |
Question: | Would this mix good with fox farm trio nutrients |
Answer: | Fox Farm nutrients works well. Most importantly is the water ph of between 6 and 6.5. |
Question: | What is this soil made from/out of |
Answer: | The ingredients include soil microbes, earthworm castings, bat guano, and aged forest products. |
Question: | Why would one choose ocean forest (blue bag) potting soil over the brown bag of happy frog potting soil -- for houseplants |
Answer: | Both soils include earthworm castings, aged forest products, and bat guano. Ocean Forest is richer in nitrogen from the added blend of crab meal, fish emulsion, and bat guano (no need to add nitrogen fertilizer at first). Happy Frog has mycorrhizae and is amended with soil microbes to improve root development and encourage nutrient uptake. Happy Frog also has less perlite than Ocean Forest so it will hold more water. User questions & answers
Question: | I'd like to use this for planting tomato and herbs in containers. Do I need to add anything to it? or just use this soil? This is first time plantin |
Answer: | For tomatoes and herbs, you're pretty much good to go with this soil. If you want, you could add a tiny bit of perlite for drainage but this soil is very good as is. Good luck with your harvesting! |
Question: | I have noticed that Miracle-Gro potting soil often has fungus gnats. Has anyone had the same problem with this potting soil |
Answer: | Miracle Grow does have fungus gnats. Especially the nature's cure brand. I've used the Black gold organic potting soil a few times, indoor and outdoor, and have never seen a fungus gnat anywhere. Plus it's more like real dirt rather then the soft and unpredictable coco coir base. Besides grow is a subsidiary company of Monsanto. Monsanto is probably the largest GMO producing company in the world. I wouldn't trust miracle grow organic or not. |
Question: | Is there supposed to be white things all through out the soil |
Answer: | The white things are small pieces of perlite. It keeps the soil loose and helps it stay aerated. Most potting soils will have this. |
Question: | I've had problems with miracle grow and bug infestations. Has anyone had a problem with bugs and this soil |
Answer: | I also had bug problems with miracle grow soil. I bought this product for someone else so I can't say but I didn't get any complaints. I did buy those microscopic worms on amazon and it killed all the bugs. I have bought many different soils and no bug problems |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the approximate weight (g) of each puck |
Answer: | That depends on how it was stored. Was it tightly sealed with extra air pressed out? Was it kept in dry, semi-dark/dark location and not full sun. If so yes, but you might want to spread it out on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for half an hour to get rid of things that grow that shouldn't. It won't be as nutrient rich as when new but it could be used as a base with newer soil added. |
Question: | would this product be suitable for growing succulents |
Answer: | Putting soil in the freezer may not kill off all bugs. Some will go into a dormant state and will be reanimated once their body's heat back up (I know from experience). If you do still put it in the freezer and it's really hot where you live, be careful of mold growing if you leave it inside the bag. Condensation will build up inside due to the difference in temperature inside and outside the bag. |
Question: | This can be used in place of regular potting soil |
Answer: | I put gravel on the bottom of my pot then the soil on top. Worked well for me. |
Question: | I’m a science teacher and looking for a soil that’ll sustain earthworms for a couple of weeks. Do you think that they could be healthy in it |
Answer: | Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Reed Sedge Peat, Perlite, Sand, and Limestone. |
