13 best vegetable fertilizers
Vegetable fertilizers are essential products used in gardening and agriculture to enhance the growth and development of vegetable plants. These fertilizers provide essential nutrients to the soil, ensuring that vegetables receive the proper nourishment required for healthy growth and bountiful harvests. Here are some key points about vegetable fertilizers:
Nutrient Balance: Vegetable plants require a combination of primary nutrients, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), as well as secondary and micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, and others. A well-balanced vegetable fertilizer will contain these nutrients in appropriate proportions to meet the specific needs of different vegetables.
Types of Fertilizers: Vegetable fertilizers come in various forms, including granular, liquid, and slow-release formulations. The choice of fertilizer type depends on the specific needs of your garden and your preferred application method.
Organic vs. Synthetic: Gardeners can choose between organic and synthetic (chemical) fertilizers. Organic options, such as compost, manure, and bone meal, are derived from natural sources and promote soil health. Synthetic fertilizers, on the other hand, are manufactured and offer precise nutrient content but may have a more immediate impact.
Application: Fertilizers should be applied according to the instructions on the product label or based on soil test results. Over-fertilization can harm plants and the environment, so it's important to follow guidelines carefully.
Seasonal Timing: Fertilization schedules often vary depending on the growing season and the specific requirements of the vegetables you're cultivating. Some vegetables may benefit from an initial application at planting, while others may require additional feedings during the growing season.
Soil Preparation: Proper soil preparation, including tilling, amending with organic matter, and maintaining the right pH level, is crucial to maximize the effectiveness of vegetable fertilizers.
Environmental Considerations: Gardeners should be mindful of environmental impacts when using fertilizers. Avoid runoff into water bodies, and store and handle fertilizers responsibly.
Specialized Formulas: Some vegetable fertilizers are designed for specific types of vegetables or gardening methods, such as container gardening or raised beds. These specialized formulations can cater to the unique nutrient requirements of different crops.
Remember that the choice of fertilizer should be tailored to your specific gardening needs, the type of vegetables you're growing, and the condition of your soil.Properly nourishing your vegetable plants with the right fertilizer can result in healthier, more productive crops.

Archaea, a recently identified microorganisms found in some of the planet's most extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. In garden applications, scientists have discovered that these microbes actually clean the soil, returning it to a healthier, more natural state. Jobe's Biozome contains a proprietary species of Archaea that quickly breaks down complex hydrocarbons & minerals into basic nutrients & trace elements that plants readily absorb. Mycorrhizal fungi expands the surface-absorbing area of the roots by 100 to 1, 000 times, sending out filaments that act as extensions of the plant's root system, helping plants absorb more water & nutrients. In return, the fungi receive essential sugars & other compounds from the plant roots, fueling their own growth. Finally, the healthy bacterial strain in Biozome improves the soil structure & quality, keeping nutrients near the roots. Jobe's Organics vegetable & tomato granular fertilizer is OMRI listed & may be used in certified organic food production according to the USDA national organic program. User questions & answers
Question: | What is the solution (NPK) on this |
Answer: | There is no such listing as "NPK" on the ingredient percentages |
Question: | For a potted meyer lemon tree, how much should I use |
Answer: | My lemon tree is only about 2 ft. tall and has been inside all winter. I added 1 3/4C. Jobe's fertilizer and watered it well. that was two days ago and it appears to be doing very well. Because my tree has been inside I have been misting the leaves every day.It had about 50 blossoms on it and is very healthy. I hope to plant it in the ground in April or May., |
Question: | What is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium in the fertilizer |
Answer: | This fertilizer is 4-4-4. The first number indicates 4% nitrogen, second 4% phosphorus and the third 4% potassium. The best way is to incorporate 4 pounds of 4-4-4 per 100 sq.ft. prior to planting. This kind of fertilizer is called "all purpose" fertilizer. My recommendation is that you analyze your soil with an inexpensive test kit (Amazon has them). Then decide what you want to grow and research on-line what the optimum fertilization ranges are for your specific plants or vegetables. Then, if you incorporate the all purpose fertilizer into you soil before planting you can spot supplement with specific fertilizers as needed. There are many organic solutions available to you. The great thing about Jobe's -09526 is that it is organic so you will be starting off the right way. Lots of luck with your plants. |
Question: | what are the actual ingredients |
Answer: | Protein Hydrolysate from feather meal, bone meal, composted poultry manure, sulfate of potash and various bacteria, endomycorrhizae, ectomycorrhzae and archaea. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this in compost tea |
Answer: | The one pictured which is a 4-6-3 does say organic on the label. Also, I did a review of this a month or so ago after comparing it to another organic brand name with the same numbers. Multiple seedlings I started at the same time and were the same size when transplanted within a few weeks were significantly larger in the containers with Dr Earth. Be careful about one thing, there is a supplier that appears to be showing this and advertising it as a more expensive version 5-7-3 Premium Dr Earth and then sending this. On four separate occasions I ordered the premium version as described in their ad wanting to comparison try that one and received this one. I believe Amazon, with their integrity, pulled the 25 pound bag of that after my telephone calls but some other online stores have not. THIS 4-6-3 IS GREAT STUFF!! |
Question: | Is this for vegetable plants |
Answer: | I believe a four pound bag would have six cups. An 11 pound bag would have 22 cups. |
Question: | Can i use it with my indoor plants (no veggies)? Also with my indoor herbs |
Answer: | They make a special blend for houseplants, I believe. |
Question: | Are there any type of bone meal or other animal products in this? Is it vegan |
Answer: | Yes, the back of the package has instructions for 3 main catagories: “tomatoes, peppers & herbs” “eggplant, corn, cucumber, beans, lettuces, Brococci” and “carrots, onions, potatoes, beets, etc.” under each of those 3 main categories’ instructions, there are 3 sub catagories: “new plantings” (with a section ‘for containers’) “established plants” (also has a section ‘for containers’) and “when to apply.” |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would you use plant tone and garden tone together or would you tend to use one or the other for herbs, vegetables, and plants grown from seed |
Answer: | Yes. I did it as an organic farmer, but I also added some of my own, homemade compost to the tea. About 1/3 of this to 2/3 homemade compost. Amazing for plants. |
Question: | Is this product a 3-4-4 ratio |
Answer: | Yes it works very well for all vegetables, in containers or in a garden. Just follow the directions and you will be pleased with the results. |
Question: | Will this be effective if used in a sterile potting soil, such as those compose primarily of peat |
Answer: | You could, but it has a very strong odor. I would personally not use it indoors, instead opting for a less pungent option. |
Question: | Which one better for tomato plant, garden tone or tomato tone |
Answer: | I believe it does contain bone meal. Copy and paste this URL in your browser to see all the ingredients: http://www.espoma.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/garden-tone-datasheet.pdf |

Question: | Hi, Does this product contain bone meal or blood meal or feather meal? If so could you kindly direct me to a similar product that does not? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes, it will. the product has it's own bacteria. Adding some compost will help prevent root rot and add more bacteria. I have over 125 containers, and the stuff is amazing. Any of the Espoma fertilizers are very effective in container culture. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it vegan |
Answer: | Probably not. It's meant to fertilize a whole plant or bush. It would be to much fertilizer for too small amount of soil. Unless you wanted to break it into a ver small piece. Otherwise the best fertilizer to use for potted plants is a water soluble fertilizer. You put a small amount in a watering can and add water to it. It's also a faster way to fertilize and safer for a smaller plant. |
Question: | How do you use it |
Answer: | Yes, this is for use on potted citrus trees. There are directions on the package that indicate how many spikes you should use based on the diameter/drip line of your plant. |
Question: | what are the ingredients |
Answer: | It is derived from bone meal. I'm sorry but I personally can't direct you to another product. However, I can direct you to either Google it. |
Question: | I applied your fertilizer to my plants a few days ago and now there is a white fungus, like spiderwebs almost, on the soil. What gives |
Answer: | Memories (of windowsill pots) are made of this; I'm a NYC girl. The spikes are easy to sink into moist soil, and they're approximately 1-3/4" long. I think they really make a difference - and the fact that they're organic is a big plus! I hope I'm being helpful. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have a fishy smell? What are the ingredients |
Answer: | The Old Farmer's Almanac Natural & Organic Tomato & Vegetable Plant Food is made of: soybean meal, feather meal, blood meal, bone meal and sulfate of potash. |
Question: | OMRI certified |
Answer: | The fine white "spiderweb" like material you're seeing is a beneficial bacteria (not a mold or fungus) called Actinomycetes that is found in all healthy soil. What you're seeing in action is the soil breaking down the fertilizer, releasing nutrients into the soil and feeding your plants. Active Actinomycetes are good things and they indicate your soil is healthy and that you plants are getting the nutrients they need to grow strong! If you've mixed the soil and fertilizer together then there usually won't be much of the "spider web" like material on the surface, it should really be happening below the soil line, so if you are seeing a lot of "spider web" like material on the surface you should mix the soil and fertilizer a bit more. |
