11 best organic garden fertilizers
Organic garden fertilizers are natural products used to improve soil fertility and provide essential nutrients to plants in a garden or agricultural setting. These fertilizers are derived from organic materials and are related to the categories of Fertilizers Plant Food, Soils Fertilizers Mulches, Gardening Lawn Care, and Patio Lawn Garden. Here's what you should know about organic garden fertilizers:
Organic Materials: Organic garden fertilizers are made from naturally occurring and renewable materials, such as compost, manure, bone meal, fish emulsion, kelp, and various plant-based substances. These materials are rich in nutrients and help enhance soil structure.
Nutrient Content: Organic fertilizers provide essential nutrients to plants, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), as well as secondary and micronutrients. These nutrients are crucial for plant growth, flowering, and fruiting.
Slow Release: Many organic fertilizers release nutrients slowly over time, providing a steady supply to plants. This gradual release can reduce the risk of nutrient runoff and leaching into groundwater, which is a concern with synthetic fertilizers.
Improving Soil Health: Organic fertilizers not only supply nutrients but also improve soil health by increasing microbial activity, enhancing soil structure, and promoting water retention. This leads to healthier plants and better yields over time.
Environmental Benefits: Organic garden fertilizers are considered more environmentally friendly than synthetic chemical fertilizers. They are less likely to harm beneficial soil organisms and are generally safer for wildlife, aquatic ecosystems, and human health.
Certified Organic: Some organic fertilizers carry organic certifications, indicating that they meet specific organic farming standards. These certifications ensure that the products are made without synthetic chemicals and follow sustainable practices.
Types of Organic Fertilizers:
- Compost: Compost is a rich, organic matter that provides a wide range of nutrients and helps improve soil structure.
- Manure: Animal manure, such as cow or chicken manure, is a good source of nitrogen and other nutrients.
- Bone Meal: Bone meal is high in phosphorus and calcium, making it suitable for flowering and fruiting plants.
- Fish Emulsion: Fish emulsion is a liquid fertilizer made from fish byproducts and is rich in nitrogen.
- Seaweed or Kelp Fertilizers: These organic fertilizers contain a range of nutrients and trace elements and are derived from marine plants.
Application: Organic fertilizers can be applied by incorporating them into the soil before planting or as a top dressing around existing plants. The specific application method and timing depend on the type of fertilizer and the needs of the plants.
Organic garden fertilizers are a sustainable and eco-friendly option for enhancing soil fertility and promoting healthy plant growth. They contribute to the overall health of the garden ecosystem and are a preferred choice for many organic gardeners and environmentally conscious individuals.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this in compost tea |
Answer: | The one pictured which is a 4-6-3 does say organic on the label. Also, I did a review of this a month or so ago after comparing it to another organic brand name with the same numbers. Multiple seedlings I started at the same time and were the same size when transplanted within a few weeks were significantly larger in the containers with Dr Earth. Be careful about one thing, there is a supplier that appears to be showing this and advertising it as a more expensive version 5-7-3 Premium Dr Earth and then sending this. On four separate occasions I ordered the premium version as described in their ad wanting to comparison try that one and received this one. I believe Amazon, with their integrity, pulled the 25 pound bag of that after my telephone calls but some other online stores have not. THIS 4-6-3 IS GREAT STUFF!! |
Question: | Is this for vegetable plants |
Answer: | I believe a four pound bag would have six cups. An 11 pound bag would have 22 cups. |
Question: | Can i use it with my indoor plants (no veggies)? Also with my indoor herbs |
Answer: | They make a special blend for houseplants, I believe. |
Question: | Are there any type of bone meal or other animal products in this? Is it vegan |
Answer: | Yes, the back of the package has instructions for 3 main catagories: “tomatoes, peppers & herbs” “eggplant, corn, cucumber, beans, lettuces, Brococci” and “carrots, onions, potatoes, beets, etc.” under each of those 3 main categories’ instructions, there are 3 sub catagories: “new plantings” (with a section ‘for containers’) “established plants” (also has a section ‘for containers’) and “when to apply.” |

Use Jobe's Organics vegetable & tomato granular fertilizer with Biozome on all your vegetables & tomatoes. The Jobe's Biozome advantage for organic gardening: improves the long-term soil quality of your garden, increases root mass, promotes plant growth & helps your garden resist disease, insects, drought & other unfavorable conditions within a growing season. Delivers long-term benefits without chemicals. Jobe's Biozome is a unique & Proprietary blend of beneficial microorganisms Archaea, mycorrhizal fungi & healthy bacteria. Archaea, a recently identified microorganisms found in some of the planet's most extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. In garden applications, scientists have discovered that these microbes actually clean the soil, returning it to a healthier, more natural state. Jobe's Biozome contains a proprietary species of Archaea that quickly breaks down complex hydrocarbons & minerals into basic nutrients & trace elements that plants readily absorb. Mycorrhizal fungi expands the surface-absorbing area of the roots by 100 to 1, 000 times, sending out filaments that act as extensions of the plant's root system, helping plants absorb more water & nutrients. In return, the fungi receive essential sugars & other compounds from the plant roots, fueling their own growth. Finally, the healthy bacterial strain in Biozome improves the soil structure & quality, keeping nutrients near the roots. Jobe's Organics vegetable & tomato granular fertilizer is OMRI listed & may be used in certified organic food production according to the USDA national organic program. Jobe's vegetable & tomato organic fertilizer is also available in a fertilizer spike or a water soluble mix for using in a watering can or hose applicator. User questions & answers
Question: | What is the solution (NPK) on this |
Answer: | There is no such listing as "NPK" on the ingredient percentages |
Question: | For a potted meyer lemon tree, how much should I use |
Answer: | My lemon tree is only about 2 ft. tall and has been inside all winter. I added 1 3/4C. Jobe's fertilizer and watered it well. that was two days ago and it appears to be doing very well. Because my tree has been inside I have been misting the leaves every day.It had about 50 blossoms on it and is very healthy. I hope to plant it in the ground in April or May., |
Question: | What is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium in the fertilizer |
Answer: | This fertilizer is 4-4-4. The first number indicates 4% nitrogen, second 4% phosphorus and the third 4% potassium. The best way is to incorporate 4 pounds of 4-4-4 per 100 sq.ft. prior to planting. This kind of fertilizer is called "all purpose" fertilizer. My recommendation is that you analyze your soil with an inexpensive test kit (Amazon has them). Then decide what you want to grow and research on-line what the optimum fertilization ranges are for your specific plants or vegetables. Then, if you incorporate the all purpose fertilizer into you soil before planting you can spot supplement with specific fertilizers as needed. There are many organic solutions available to you. The great thing about Jobe's -09526 is that it is organic so you will be starting off the right way. Lots of luck with your plants. |
Question: | what are the actual ingredients |
Answer: | Protein Hydrolysate from feather meal, bone meal, composted poultry manure, sulfate of potash and various bacteria, endomycorrhizae, ectomycorrhzae and archaea. |

Question: | Where does the fish come from? I am trying to avoid pacific fish because of the Japanese power plant melt-down |
Answer: | This is what it says on the bottle and their website: "Neptune's Harvest is a division of Ocean Crest Seafoods Inc., established in 1965 as a wholesale fish and seafood company. Still today, our Neptune's Harvest Organic Fertilizer gets made from fresh caught North Atlantic fish right on the docks of Gloucester, MA. Unlike a fish emulsion, our fertilizers are produced using a unique cold process "without cooking out all the good stuff". Best of all, it works great on everything that grows!"So it's a Massachusetts fishing industry byproduct! :) |
Question: | I like the looks of the reviews but, the smell wouldn't bother me if it works, will it attract bears and raccoons |
Answer: | This is the hydrolyzed fish and seaweed Mix. It doesn't smell bad when you first mix it up, just be sure to use it all at one time. I mean make small batches like a gallon at a time or quart. Use it all don't let it sit in a container. It then will stink! I haven't had any problems with wildlife. The only thing that might attract is flies. |

Do not store diluted fertilizer.House Plants: Use 1 tablespoon per gallon of water. Feed every 2-3 weeks. Do not over water.Outdoor Plants: Use 1/8 Cup (1 fl. Oz.- 1:128) pergallon of water. Feed monthly during growing season and again in the fall.Compost Enhancer: Use ¼ Cup (2fl. Oz.) per gallonof water every 2-3 weeks.Seed Germination: Soak in solution of 1 teaspoon percup of water.Caution: Keep out of reach of children. Do not takeinternally. |

Question: | Does this have a fishy smell? What are the ingredients |
Answer: | The Old Farmer's Almanac Natural & Organic Tomato & Vegetable Plant Food is made of: soybean meal, feather meal, blood meal, bone meal and sulfate of potash. |
Question: | OMRI certified |
Answer: | The fine white "spiderweb" like material you're seeing is a beneficial bacteria (not a mold or fungus) called Actinomycetes that is found in all healthy soil. What you're seeing in action is the soil breaking down the fertilizer, releasing nutrients into the soil and feeding your plants. Active Actinomycetes are good things and they indicate your soil is healthy and that you plants are getting the nutrients they need to grow strong! If you've mixed the soil and fertilizer together then there usually won't be much of the "spider web" like material on the surface, it should really be happening below the soil line, so if you are seeing a lot of "spider web" like material on the surface you should mix the soil and fertilizer a bit more. |
Product description
AZOMITE is an acronym for the "A to Z of minerals including trace elements". An estimated 30 million years ago, a volcanic eruption filled a nearby seabed. The unique combination of seawater, fed by rivers rich in minerals and rare earth elements present in the volcanic ash created the composition known as the AZOMITE mineral deposit. AZOMITE is mined here in Utah, just over 40 miles from the PowerGrow Systems warehouse where it is packaged in its purest 100% Organic form as a micronized easily used powder. Vegetable and Flower Garden Use: Flowers, plants and vegetables may all benefit from the trace minerals in AZOMITE. Gardeners report increased germination rates, improved yield, more and brighter colored flower blossoms, an increase in resistance to pests and disease and tastier vegetables. Higher brix readings (a measurement of the quality of the sugars and proteins in a plant's sap) have been reported in vegetables grown with AZOMITE. Application Guidelines: When preparing soil, customers have reported an average of 30% improvement with AZOMITE treatment at the rate of 1/4 cup per plant. For larger areas, we recommend two 44 lb bags per acre (based on rows approximately 18" apart with plants 12" apart). If the bed is established, sprinkle around each plant. AZOMITE should be applied with compost, humus, manures, or other fertilizers to provide additional levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. AZOMITE will not burn plants. For houseplants, mix 1 teaspoon per 2 inch pot diameter with potting soil before planting. Give 1 teaspoon quarterly thereafter. For roses, start with 1/4 lb. to the soil around each plant and lightly till into soil.
- 100% Pure Certified Organic AZOMITE directly from the mine (which is only 40 miles away from the PowerGrow warehouse)
- AZOMITE contains over 67 trace minerals and nutrients that will supercharge your garden
- Increases flavor, aroma and size of vegetables and fruit
- Top recommended Organic fertilizer for Wheatgrass
- Listing includes 5 pound bag of PowerGrow Systems AZOMITE

User questions & answers
Question: | Can u mix with regular soil |
Answer: | no |
Question: | Will this dissolve for hydroponics |
Answer: | No I don’t think these spikes will do anything but fertilize your flowering plants. If you google your question there are things to add to your soil which might help turn your hydrangeas blue. You need to test your soil to see if it’s acidic or not and go from there. |
Question: | Does product contain chicken manure |
Answer: | Why not? Its a flower, right? Used them in my planters on my porch and they loved it! |
Question: | Is this listing for the product photographed |
Answer: | I give my plants one every month because I’m in Florida but if you live in a city where you have seasons it would be best to stick one in every 60 days or more especially if you’re watering less and the plant isn’t really active( putting out new leaves) My plants are much healthier because of Jobes plant spikes. I’ve been using them religiously for many years. |
