7 best organic fertilizer for corns
Organic fertilizers for corn can be an excellent choice to promote healthy growth and maximize yields while maintaining soil health. Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources and provide essential nutrients to your corn plants without the use of synthetic chemicals. Here are some key points about organic fertilizers for corn:
Types of Organic Fertilizers: There are various types of organic fertilizers suitable for corn, including compost, manure, bone meal, fish meal, and seaweed-based fertilizers. These products contain organic matter that improves soil structure and nutrient retention.
Nutrient Content: Organic fertilizers typically contain a balanced blend of essential nutrients, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), along with micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. The nutrient ratios may vary depending on the specific type of organic fertilizer.
Slow Release: Organic fertilizers release nutrients gradually as they break down, which can provide a steady supply of nutrients to corn plants throughout the growing season. This slow-release nature helps prevent nutrient leaching and reduces the risk of over-fertilization.
Soil Health: Using organic fertilizers can improve soil health by increasing its organic matter content, enhancing microbial activity, and promoting better water retention. Healthy soil is crucial for corn growth and development.
Application: When using organic fertilizers for corn, it's essential to follow the recommended application rates on the product labels.Typically, you'll need to work the fertilizer into the soil before planting or side-dress it around established corn plants during the growing season.
Compost: Compost is an excellent organic fertilizer for corn. It not only provides nutrients but also improves soil structure and encourages beneficial microorganisms. You can incorporate compost into the soil before planting or use it as a mulch around corn plants.
Manure: Well-composted animal manure, such as chicken or cow manure, is rich in nutrients and can be applied to corn fields. Ensure that the manure is fully composted to prevent any potential issues with pathogens or odor.
Organic Certification: If you are aiming for organic certification for your corn crop, make sure to use organic fertilizers that meet the certification standards. These products are typically free from synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Crop Rotation: Implementing crop rotation practices in your corn field can help maintain soil fertility and reduce the need for excessive fertilization, whether organic or synthetic.
Consultation: If you are uncertain about the specific nutrient requirements of your corn crop or which organic fertilizer to use, consider consulting with a local agricultural extension service or an agronomist for personalized recommendations.
Using organic fertilizers for corn can support sustainable agriculture practices and contribute to healthier soil and crops. Be sure to monitor your corn plants' nutrient needs throughout the growing season and adjust your fertilizer application as needed to achieve the best results.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I use this before or after I fertilize my lawn in the Fall |
Answer: | I wouldn't necessarily use this in the Fall. September is a nice cool month to do some reseeding, and you can't put this down within 6 weeks of seeding the lawn. I tend to do a March application and a 2nd April application, leaving me a window to seed the lawn in June. Always remember, June and September are the 2 best months to seed your lawn. I also wouldn't put this down in the fall because crabgrass does not tend to germinate in the fall, it germinates in March and April. |
Question: | Is this effective against crabgrass |
Answer: | I used it for the first time this season. I couldn't see that it did anything although I understand that it should be used for 3 consecutive seasons to see significant results. I wasn't pleased with the size of the pellets (rabbit food size). It took several rain events for the product to dissolve. Maybe this is better but it just wasn't what I expected. In the spring I plan to use a chemical crabgrass preventer. I'm changing over to a zoysia lawn. Zoysia may go dormant and turn brown in the winter but it requires no watering and less mowing in summer. In a few seasons I won't need any fertilizer or weed killer (except for spot treatments). |
Question: | Can this be used in the garden as well as the lawn |
Answer: | Does this kill the grasses that produce those nasty "Foxtails"? I have animals, vegetable garden, etc. and need a better way to kill these weeds/grasses before they produce the foxtails. Trying to "weed-wacker" them down before they get the foxtails is not always possible for me due to health issues. |
Question: | Is this a good product to use on gravel walkways to avoid weed growth |
Answer: | Mike McGrath says: Spread even the finest quality corn gluten on established weeds like those walkway ones, however, and you'll simply be feeding them. Mulch, vinegar, flame, hoeing and/or hand pulling are the answer here-and in that large-scale, Master Gardener situation. Yes, you could prevent future weeds by dusting with corn gluten every six weeks, but it would be hugely expensive and you'd be wasting all that great nitrogen fertilizer if there weren't 'wanted' plants growing in that area. Delivers long-term benefits without chemicals. Jobe's Biozome is a unique & Proprietary blend of beneficial microorganisms Archaea, mycorrhizal fungi & healthy bacteria. Archaea, a recently identified microorganisms found in some of the planet's most extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. In garden applications, scientists have discovered that these microbes actually clean the soil, returning it to a healthier, more natural state. Mycorrhizal fungi expands the surface-absorbing area of the roots by 100 to 1, 000 times, sending out filaments that act as extensions of the plant's root system, helping plants absorb more water & nutrients. In return, the fungi receive essential sugars & other compounds from the plant roots, fueling their own growth. User questions & answers
Question: | what kind of spreader & on what setting |
Answer: | I set a Scotts Speedygreen 2000 on 9. I saw a pretty fair improvement in lawn health last year. |
Question: | Will this work in flowerbeds to prevent weed germination? Looking for an organic alternative to Preen |
Answer: | It's not a weed killer. In my experience, it makes the grass grow faster and thicker and thus the weeds are squeezed out and don't get a good foothold. But in flower beds, you're not growing grass. |
Question: | Will this help get rid of clover |
Answer: | As far as my experience goes with corn gluten in general it will not affect clover. It's only effective against germination of dandelion seeds and only in the common ones found in the Midwest. Not the different types found in the Northwest. |
Question: | How many square feet does it cover |
Answer: | if I rember correctly -it would have been enough to do my whole yard(average subdivision lot) ...go to dirt doctor.com and search this on howard's site.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this in compost tea |
Answer: | The one pictured which is a 4-6-3 does say organic on the label. Also, I did a review of this a month or so ago after comparing it to another organic brand name with the same numbers. Multiple seedlings I started at the same time and were the same size when transplanted within a few weeks were significantly larger in the containers with Dr Earth. Be careful about one thing, there is a supplier that appears to be showing this and advertising it as a more expensive version 5-7-3 Premium Dr Earth and then sending this. On four separate occasions I ordered the premium version as described in their ad wanting to comparison try that one and received this one. I believe Amazon, with their integrity, pulled the 25 pound bag of that after my telephone calls but some other online stores have not. THIS 4-6-3 IS GREAT STUFF!! |
Question: | Is this for vegetable plants |
Answer: | I believe a four pound bag would have six cups. An 11 pound bag would have 22 cups. |
Question: | Can i use it with my indoor plants (no veggies)? Also with my indoor herbs |
Answer: | They make a special blend for houseplants, I believe. |
Question: | Are there any type of bone meal or other animal products in this? Is it vegan |
Answer: | Yes, the back of the package has instructions for 3 main catagories: “tomatoes, peppers & herbs” “eggplant, corn, cucumber, beans, lettuces, Brococci” and “carrots, onions, potatoes, beets, etc.” under each of those 3 main categories’ instructions, there are 3 sub catagories: “new plantings” (with a section ‘for containers’) “established plants” (also has a section ‘for containers’) and “when to apply.” |
