13 best iron for plants
Iron is an essential micronutrient for plants, playing a crucial role in various physiological processes. It is vital for the overall health and growth of plants, and a deficiency in iron can lead to poor growth, yellowing of leaves (a condition known as chlorosis), and reduced crop yields. Here's what you need to know about iron for plants:
Role of Iron in Plants:
- Iron is a key component in the production of chlorophyll, the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis.
- It facilitates the transport of electrons within the plant during photosynthesis and respiration.
- Iron is also involved in nitrogen fixation in leguminous plants.
Iron Deficiency Symptoms:
- Yellowing of young leaves, typically starting with interveinal chlorosis (yellowing between the leaf veins).
- Reduced plant growth and vigor.
- Stunted root development.
- Decreased fruit or flower production.
Causes of Iron Deficiency:
- Poor soil conditions: High pH (alkaline soil) can limit the availability of iron to plants.
- Excessive moisture: Waterlogged or poorly-draining soils can reduce iron uptake.
- Competition with other nutrients: High levels of other micronutrients like manganese can interfere with iron absorption.
Iron Sources for Plants:
- Iron Chelates: Iron chelates are water-soluble forms of iron that are readily available to plants. They are often used as soil or foliar applications to correct iron deficiencies.
- Iron Sulfate: Iron sulfate is a common inorganic iron fertilizer that can be applied to the soil to improve iron availability.
- Organic Matter: Compost and organic matter can enhance iron uptake by improving soil structure and microbial activity.
Application Methods:
- Soil Application: Iron can be incorporated into the soil before planting or applied as a side dressing around established plants.
- Foliar Spray: In cases of severe iron deficiency, a foliar spray of iron chelate can be applied directly to the leaves for rapid absorption.
- Drenching: For container-grown plants, iron solutions can be drenched into the root zone.
Prevention and Management:
- Soil testing is essential to identify iron deficiencies and adjust soil pH if necessary.
- Proper watering practices to prevent waterlogging.
- Regular addition of organic matter to improve soil structure and nutrient availability.
- Maintaining a balanced nutrient regimen to avoid nutrient imbalances that can affect iron uptake.
In summary, iron is a vital micronutrient for plant growth and development. Recognizing the signs of iron deficiency and providing the necessary iron supplementation through appropriate fertilizers and soil management practices is crucial for maintaining healthy and productive plants in your garden.

User questions & answers
Question: | how many square feet will this cover for lawns? what would the ratio be set to for use with a hose end sprayer |
Answer: | There's no lead listed on the label. Just 11% Chelate Iron. |
Question: | How much and how often can this be applied to the lawn |
Answer: | If you spray leaves as directed, results in 23 to 48 hours, If you use soil application it takes much longer because the iron chelate has to travel up the roots thru stems to get to the leaves. Spraying the leaves directly appears to have almost instant results. I prefer spraying in early morn or late evening. |
Question: | Does this product stain house wood siding or concrete |
Answer: | No, but I use it on organic fruit trees and it doesn't harm the tree or the fruit. This is an excellent product for turning those yellow leaves back to a bright green. Apply 1 teaspoon per two feet of plant height. |
Question: | what is % of chelated iron |
Answer: | per guaranteed analysis on label: Iron 11.00% derived from Iron DTPA |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be applied with a backpack sprayer |
Answer: | If your tree is 20 feet tall, it is probably doing well. Seriously, because of the complexity of soil chemistry, it is better to apply as foliar spray. Keep it dilute and be careful: Too much is bad. One thousand parts per million is the upper limit of dissolved salts. One-tenth of one percent. It is best to use a combination material such as Miracle Grow, unless you know for sure that it is iron deficiency. Soil pH is the key factor. |
Question: | What is the analysis of this product? i’m assuming no n-p-k, but %fe |
Answer: | Yes, but...yellow leaves is a common problem and hard to identify the true cause. I posted you this. It might give you better understanding of what might really be going on. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/helping-a-gardenia-bush-with-yellow-leaves.htm |
Question: | does the product expire |
Answer: | There is a mixture of light powder and small granules. |
Question: | My soil tests 9. if i use this product fir my trees / shrubs, it will bring the ph level down after how many applications |
Answer: | Grow More EDTA's are chelated with Ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid are recognized worldwide by leading agricultural producers, university research centers and testing laboratories as the most powerful chelating agents available. For soil or foliar application at rates as low as 1 Lb per acre or 1 Kg per hectare. |
