13 best grub controls

Grub control refers to the management and prevention of grubs, which are the larval stage of certain types of beetles, such as Japanese beetles, June beetles, and European chafer beetles. Grubs can be a significant nuisance in lawns and gardens as they feed on the roots of grass and other plants, causing damage to the vegetation. Grub controls are products or practices used to prevent and mitigate grub infestations. Here are some key points about grub control:

  1. Identification: Grubs are creamy-white, C-shaped larvae that live in the soil. They can vary in size depending on the beetle species. It's important to identify the presence of grubs in your lawn or garden before implementing control measures.

  2. Damage: Grubs feed on the roots of grass and plants, which can lead to brown patches, wilting, and weakened turf. Severe infestations can kill grass and other vegetation.

  3. Life Cycle: Grubs have a specific life cycle, with eggs laid in the soil, followed by several larval stages, pupation, and finally, emergence as adult beetles. Understanding their life cycle can help in timing control measures effectively.

  4. Grub Control Methods:

    • Chemical Controls: Grub control products often contain chemical insecticides that target the larval stage of the beetles. These products are applied to the lawn or garden, and they work by killing the grubs in the soil. Common active ingredients include imidacloprid, chlorantraniliprole, and trichlorfon.

    • Biological Controls: Some beneficial nematodes (microscopic roundworms) can be used to control grubs. These nematodes parasitize and kill the grubs. Milky spore disease is another biological control method that affects Japanese beetle grubs.

    • Cultural Practices: Maintaining a healthy lawn through proper watering, mowing, and fertilization can make the grass more resilient to grub damage. Additionally, aerating the soil can disrupt the grubs' habitat.

    • Preventive Measures: Applying grub control products in late spring or early summer can prevent grub infestations before they become severe. Preventive measures are often more effective than trying to control an existing infestation.

  5. Application Timing: Timing is crucial when applying grub control products. It's typically best to apply them when the grubs are in their early larval stages, which is usually in late spring or early summer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific product you choose.

  6. Environmental Considerations: When using chemical grub control products, it's important to follow safety precautions and environmental guidelines. Some chemicals may have adverse effects on non-target organisms, so use them responsibly.

  7. Monitoring: Regularly inspect your lawn or garden for signs of grub damage. If you notice brown patches, wilting grass, or signs of beetle activity, consider implementing grub control measures.

In summary, grub control involves the management and prevention of grubs, the larval stage of certain beetle species that can damage lawns and gardens by feeding on plant roots. Control methods include chemical and biological treatments, cultural practices, and preventive measures. Timing and proper application are essential for effective grub control, and it's important to consider environmental and safety guidelines when using chemical products.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this in vegetable garden
Answer: No strap. Easy to carry by the handle though.
Question: will it harm earthworms
Answer: I no longer have the box it came but the tank has "20020" in raised plastic written on it. However, in looking at the item listed as 'Chapin 20020" there is a differnce in the wand tip, the spray lever does not lock 'on' (looks like there is a place for piece of plastic to slide for locking), and there may be a few other differences. It may be that Chapin uses the same tank and takes away some bits of plastic to make stripped down models.
Question: Can I use with crabgrass preventer
Answer: This is NOT the right model for spraying sealers and/or stains. The correct models are 25010, 25012, 25020, and 30600. See the Chapin website.
Question: Does this kill Vine Weevil grubs? Thank you
Answer: It will vary based on the product you are using so read the directions carefully for every product you spray. But in general, 1 gallon for 1,000 sq. ft. That said, I just used it on a lawn bowling green which is about 14,000 sq. ft. The pesticide I used said 1 gallon to cover 1,000 sq. ft. That would have been 12 gallons to cover the green, but when I had finished I used half that amount. This may have been because I walked too fast (I walked about the pace I do when I spread fertilizer). So, depending on how fast you walk, how comprehensive you want your coverage to be, and what the pesticide label suggest, I would say 1 gallon covers at least 1,000 sq. ft and at most 2,000 sq. ft. I also recommend using a dye/colorant so you can tell where you have sprayed and how think the coverage is.

User questions & answers

Question: We seem to have a grub infestation and animals are ripping up the grass to get at the grubs -- is it too late in the season to apply your product
Answer: I didn't read the package (no gone) to find out the best time of year to apply the stuff, I simply dispatched it using a lawn spreader according to the application chart on the bag. To answer your question, I'd have to say that as long as the ground hasn't yet froze solid, and liquid rain is still likely in the upcoming weather forecasts, then the product should still be effective. In my case, I was declaring war on a major infestation of opossums who's tunneling activities were under-mining the shed and beginning to cause large sink holes in our yard and driveway. One person had already fallen through a thin section of ground in the yard - into a hole that was 4 feet deep, with 20" - 24" inch tunnels going in both directions underground! I'd STILL like to know where the heck all that dirt goes, as no tell-tale signs such as mounds of soil were ever found on the premises! While researching this problem, I learned that grub worm are one of their favorite foods, and that promotes such tunneling activity in an area that contains such a food source. That's why I bought the grub killer in the first place. What I can say for sure is that, within 3 days after applying the stuff, 95% of my entire lawn was surprisingly dead! I assume that since what little vegetation still remaining was sparse blades of soft thin regular grass, it seems that every other living growing thing in the lawn was killed, presumably all weeds, crab-grass, wire-grass, etc. I'd also have to say that such devastation to the roots of the undesired plants must not have ben to healthy fore the grubs either. In addition to applying the grub killer, we also took other steps before applying the grub killer, including: filling tunnel entrances with crushed glass, and using kill traps to kill as many opossums as possible. In any event, there has been no signs of opossums, nor any new tunneling activity on the property since the grub killer was applied, but that could likely also be the combined results of a culmination of steps that were taken. I guess the real verdict won't come in until next spring, when we see if that pest problem resumes. Meanwhile, no one else has fallen through the ground around here, and we seem to have stopped it before any cars got eaten up in the driveway! In your case (if it were me), I'd still give it a shot, so long as water can still cause the chemicals to soon saturate the root level of the soil. Good Luck!
Question: Does this kill weevils that eat agave plants
Answer: Unfortunately, this product is not listed for the control of weevils. We would recommend applying our 3 in 1 Insect, Disease, & Mite control spray for that particular insect. You may apply every 7-14 days as needed for an active infestation.
Question: How many sq feet for 1 bag
Answer: Approximately 5000. Seems high priced but what isn't these days. 2nd year I have used it ..... No complaints
Question: What is the expiration date on the packages currently for sale
Answer: There is no exp date

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used under fruit trees ie. Apple, pears, blueberries etc?? I need to be 100% sure and would like responses fro those whom are certain
Answer: I always want to give good information on this poisen. I can not answer your question. I use Bayer poisen for the yard and around the headges and for flea controll. I contacted Bayer about useing it during the hot summer months in Fl when the tempature reaches above 90*; Bayer informed me that it stops killing insects above 90*. For fruit trees you need to call their 800 # and ask them or your county Agracultrial Agent. Have a safe growing season. Dallas
Question: Will this work in flower beds with weed fabric and ceder mulch on top? Worried it won't get down to the grubs
Answer: This substance is a solvent. it will eventually dissolve and absolve in ground, so it would work when spread over mulch.
Question: does this kill chiggers? the normal insect killers won't work because they're arachnids, but noticed it does kill spiders and ticks
Answer: Yes it specifically lists chiggers as a pest it will control. Thanks for considering your purchase from Amazon through AgCareDirect.
Question: will this kill honeybees
Answer: Thats a good QUESTION. I dont know I would call Bayer and talk to them. Also make sure you read the MSDS INFORMATION and the instructions on how to speead it. Bayer is good for killing fleas and ticks. It lasts three months and use it untill the out door temps hit 90* or above. I live in Jax Fl. I use a comertial pest controll service year round and I have them spray for fleas during the 90* hot summer months. Comertial liquid poisen kills the fleas and ticks above 90*. I either just dump the bag in my spreader or sometimes use rubber gloves and speead it around the foundation of my house to kill roaches before they have a chance to get in. Also, BAYER does not kill anything if you use it during the hot days of summer when the tempature is above 90*. I called Bayer and read it on the MSDS sheet. Hope I helped you out. I was a Hamat Tech when I was a Firefighter now I am retired. Have a good spring.

User questions & answers

Question: I'm trying to find the word "granular" on this picture. Is it
Answer: Spreader mix ...i guess...the same thing??? It is the stuff!!! I only did 1 application...& it worked!!! And it didn't kill my wonderful earthworms! It has been about 5m. and still no grubs. If I see any evidence I will use this product(though expensive) again! I do need to reseed my lawn in those areas :(
Question: The description says this has no effects on humans or pets, but the bag has a warning: Hazard to humans and domestic animals. What is the truth
Answer: it means don't breathe it in or consume the product. if you have animals make sure u wet it down well before u let animals near the spread. as 4 the 2 legged animal, watch out 4 children (who put everything in their mouths) adults should use common sense. IE: cheap paper mask/filter & protect eyes etc.. after it has been wetted down into the ground it is harmless. i have used 4 the last 8yrs. & as of 06/01/2016, my doctor says i'm in good health.
Question: What else besides Japanese beetle grubs does this kill
Answer: This is what the pkg itself reads: "1 application can last up to 15 years in the soil. St. Gabriel Organics guarantees product performance for 10 years.Milky Spore only kills the grub stage of Japanese beetles does not harm people, pets and the environment.Environmentally friendly,Does not harm bees"
Question: Is this really 20 pounds or 20 ounces? What size area does it treat
Answer: 20 Pounds and it's great , the granulare is easy to apply. I use the power in the front yard I had to dress for safety and safety glasses and a special mask rated for the dust. This you do not have to just spread with hand held spreader or other spreader. The power is every 3 or 4 feet . This is a great.20 pounds Granular

User questions & answers

Question: How long do have to wait to mow again after applying duocide
Answer: Most granular products fall into the thatch layer so if it hasn’t been watered in you likely won’t suck up many of the granular. I would recommend lightly watering in after you apply which allows the granuals to disperse.
Question: Why can't this Product be shipped to California
Answer: Ask your state and local government. It probably has to do with their restrictions.
Question: They are destroying my tangerine plants. Applying it 2 ft away won't help. If there are no fruits, can it be applied closer to the root
Answer: Ues
Question: Is it safe to use at the same time I put down pre-emergent
Answer: I can’t answer that; I sprayed my pre-emergent back in February and I didn’t didnt put the Andersons Duocide Lawn Insecticide until April. I do suggest watching the short video on lightly watering and then 30 minutes later repeat to expedite its absorbing into the ground. I did apply other fertilizers etc. prior to the insecticide though. It does break down very easily, so I would say if the insecticide was put down and watered into the ground as recommended then I wouldn’t think that there would be a problem

Eliminate Pests Above and Below the Surface

The Andersons DuoCide is a professional-grade, curative lawn insect control. Fast acting DuoCide eliminates more than 50 common lawn pests, including grubs, ticks, fire ants and fleas. With a unique formula containing both bifenthrin and carbaryl, DuoCide eliminates lawn pests above and below the soil surface with a single application.

DuoCide also features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granule (DG) Technology, which makes spreading easier and increases effectiveness. With DG Technology, DuoCide granules break down upon contact with water and disperse into thousands of microparticles that move through the turf canopy and into the soil for maximum performance.

Applying DuoCide

Application rates range from 2-8 lbs/1000 sq ft and vary based on pest(s) to be controlled. See the chart below for more detail.

Proper application timing depends on pest(s) to be controlled. For surface pests (ants, spiders, billbugs, chinch bugs, etc.), treat when pests or turf damage symptoms first appear. For subsurface pests (white grubs, june beetles, etc.), apply 10-14 days after egg-laying activity and/or when turf damage is first noticed. See DuoCide label for complete detail.

Irrigation Required

DuoCide must be watered in immediately after application. Upon contact with water, DuoCide granules will disperse into thousands of microparticles, moving the active ingredients through the turf canopy and into the soil. Wait until watering is complete and the area has dried before allowing pets or people to reenter.

User questions & answers

Question: We r trying to get rid of moles in our yard by removing their food source. Is this a good product to kill grubs in lawns
Answer: I used milky spore two years ago to cut down the Japanese beetle population. It has worked quite effectively on them. We used to pick 40-100 beetles per day from roses and other plants, and now get about 10 per day. However, you will likely have other grubs in the ground, and earth worms too. The moles will keep after those targets, too, so you need a more comprehensive plan than just milky spore. I suggest you focus on the moles, not their food only.
Question: Can this product be incorporated into the soil by using a tiller? I have a Scott's drop spreader. Does anyone know at what setting
Answer: Rain dissolves it into the soil. No need to till in
Question: How is it applied? Shaker or gloved hand
Answer: We use a broadcast spreader for the lawn, and by glove in the garden beds.
Question: safe to use in vegetable garden
Answer: Yes this is safe for a vegetable garden. The spores attack only beetle larvae.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this also kill earthworms
Answer: While I don’t know for absolute sure, I don’t think so. I learned about this product from a YouTube video from Silver Cymbal, and he said it was pretty specific to grubs, and NOT other insects, but a much wider variety of grubs than milky spore. But I realize earthworms are not technically insects. That video is titled “How to get rid of grubs ORGANICALLY in the LAWN”. Reading the bag, it lists a lot of beetle type bugs that it controls but not other insects or worms. Risk to earthworms are not mentioned anywhere on the bag or in the YouTube video. But he does say it is safe for bees. Hope that helps. I’ll be very upset myself, if this kills earthworms. It is recommended for lawns and garden beds so I really don’t think it will hurt worms.
Question: When and how often do i apply
Answer: If you live in Northeast USA it’s to late. Application should have been applied. Google your zip code to determine when the optimum time to apply the 1st application. Then I’d apply again in 30 days. You can also contact your local Cooperative Extension for their recommendation. Last recommendation Is ask one of the neighborhood lawn service workers. Good luck
Question: Does it kill Japanese beetle grubs
Answer: Yes
Question: Does this kill beneficial earthworms
Answer: No. The product is non-toxic and unharmful to wildlife including earthworms, pollinators, insects, birds, and fish.

Stop the Damage Before it Starts!

Grubs and other insects can cause serious damage to lawns if not kept under control. After feeding on the roots, grubs leave grass looking brown and wilted, sometimes beyond repair.

The Andersons Organic Grub Control prevents grub damage and the destruction caused by foragers like moles and raccoons, who are known for rummaging through yards looking for grubs. Controlling grubs also helps to control the population of other pests like beetles, chafers, weevils, and emerald ash borers in your yard.

100% Organic and OMRI-Listed

Organic Grub Control is made of 100% organic ingredients and carries an OMRI Listing, certifying its ingredients for organic use. Containing the natural soil bacterium bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) galleriae, Organic Grub Control is as effective as chemical treatments without any of the dangers.

Won't Harm Beneficial Insects or Pollinators

While ridding your yard of grubs, beetles, and foragers like moles, skunks, and raccoons looking to feed on grubs, Organic Grub Control won't cause damage to earthworms, beneficial insects, or pollinators like bees, butterflies and ladybugs.

Safe for the Whole Family

Organic Grub Control helps create a beautiful yard the whole family will be able to enjoy, without restrictions. Because the product is 100% organic and toxin-free, children and pets can return to the treated area immediately following application!

Eliminate Grubs and Other Turf Damaging Pests

The Andersons Organic Grub Control is effective against annual white grubs of the annual bluegrass weevil, Asiatic garden beetle, chafer, green June beetle, Japanese beetle, May or June beetle, northern masked chafer, oriental beetle, and the southern masked chafer.

Application Timing

A spring application of Organic Grub Control shortly after the ground has thawed can be used to control grubs coming to the surface of your lawn to feed on roots. In mid-to-late summer, Organic Grub Control can be used to target newly-hatched grubs and prevent damage from foragers like birds, raccoons, moles, and skunks.

For those looking for maximum protection, Organic Grub Control can be applied again in the fall to minimize over-wintering grubs and set your lawn up for spring success.

To ensure best results, Organic Grub Control should be watered in with irrigation or rainfall.

User questions & answers

Question: how is it applied
Answer: I applied by hand using a cup with wholes. But you can use a handheld spreader or a push spreader. What ever you use to put fertilizer down with.
Question: when is best time of year to apply
Answer: An easy way to remember: Apply in July when the beetles fly.
Question: Doesn't mention if/when small pets can be on the lawn. Does it say anywhere on the actual package
Answer: Eric's answer is nonsense. The active ingredient in this pesticide is imidacloprid. According to published testing at the Michigan State Extension Service, Cornell University et al, the instructions to apply imidacloprid to a lawn require you to water-in the product with a half inch of water. Once the lawn then dries after the watering it is safe for children and pests. Do your own query, that data is widely published. In fact, to make the point even more clearly, imidacloprid is approved by the EPA to be applied directly onto dogs over 7 weeks old as a flea treatment. Why people like Eric make their ridiculous postings is beyond me.
Question: This thing smells pretty evil. I want grubs to die but I feel the worse for my earthworms. Will this kill earthworms in the soil
Answer: As I said in my review, in addition to the grubs, it killed the earthworms in my lawn. It killed about a dozen worms per 10-square feet of turf.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I also put this on my lawn and if so, do I need to wait any time before allowing my dog on the lawn
Answer: Yes, use it on your lawn and in any tree wells. I would keep the dog off for several hours. Maybe you can keep him on one half and do the other half.
Question: I applied milky spore two weeks ago, and for the past two days saw a grub walking on top of soil. Is this normal to see them on top
Answer: They are going to ingest the product at different times! Give it up to a year to take effect.
Question: Can you explain how you applied it successfully? Also, better early fall or when
Answer: you can also drill holes in a tin can or plastic cup and tie it to the end of a broom handle, then every few feet tap it on the ground. They say it last for years, but after my first application in the fall, I still had a few (way less) grubs by the following spring, so I put some more down now. Good luck!
Question: I live where there are fireflies. Will this affect them
Answer: They shouldn't be affected. Here's a link: https://ask.extension.org/questions/326957
