11 best generic lawn fertilizers
Generic lawn fertilizers are commonly used products in lawn care and gardening to provide essential nutrients to grass and promote healthy growth. These fertilizers come in various forms, including granular, liquid, or soluble powder, and they contain a balanced blend of nutrients that are essential for plant growth. Here are some key points about generic lawn fertilizers:
Nutrient Composition: Generic lawn fertilizers typically contain three primary macronutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), which are represented as N-P-K ratios on the product label. For example, a common formulation might be 10-10-10, indicating equal parts of each nutrient.
Nitrogen (N): Nitrogen is essential for promoting lush green growth and healthy foliage. It encourages leafy development and is often responsible for the vibrant color of grass.
Phosphorus (P): Phosphorus is essential for root development and flowering. It plays a crucial role in overall plant energy transfer.
Potassium (K): Potassium aids in various physiological processes, including disease resistance, water uptake, and overall stress tolerance. It helps grass withstand environmental challenges.
Secondary Nutrients: Some generic fertilizers may also contain secondary nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, which are important for balanced plant nutrition.
Micronutrients: In addition to macronutrients, some generic fertilizers include micronutrients like iron, manganese, and zinc, which are required in smaller quantities but are still vital for plant health.
Application Methods: Generic lawn fertilizers can be applied using various methods, such as broadcasting granules evenly across the lawn, using a drop or rotary spreader, or by mixing with water for liquid application.
Timing: Fertilizing should be done at the appropriate time of year to maximize effectiveness. Typically, lawns are fertilized in the spring and fall when grass is actively growing.
Environmental Impact: It's important to use generic lawn fertilizers responsibly to prevent over-application, which can lead to nutrient runoff and harm water bodies. Following the recommended application rates and avoiding fertilizing before heavy rain can mitigate these risks.
Organic vs. Synthetic: Lawn fertilizers can be categorized as organic or synthetic.Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources and release nutrients slowly over time, while synthetic fertilizers are chemically manufactured and provide a quick nutrient boost.
Soil Testing: Conducting a soil test can help determine the specific nutrient needs of your lawn, allowing you to choose a fertilizer with the right N-P-K ratio for your soil's condition.
Storage and Safety: Generic lawn fertilizers should be stored in a cool, dry place and kept out of reach of children and pets. Follow safety instructions on the product label when handling and applying the fertilizer.
By understanding the nutrient requirements of your lawn, choosing an appropriate generic lawn fertilizer, and following recommended application guidelines, you can help ensure your lawn remains healthy, vibrant, and resilient to environmental stressors.

Answer: | It’s awesome when properly applied |
Question: | anyone used in high temp area 100+ daily |
Answer: | Slow release. |
Question: | My back yard was just seeded with new grass. I was told to fertilize it once the grass just comes up, with a 20-15-10 mix. Will this fertilizer work |
Answer: | Hi, J. Catlin! Ratio of Scotts Lawn Food is 32-0-4 on a new bag that I have- the 15k sq ft bag has long been thrown in the trash. I elected to not use the bag I have left because it would have been TOO MUCH on my lawn!. This is NOT one of those items where ,if a little bit does a little good... you know the rest! You must follow the directions when using this product!!! As you can see from the first number (nitrogen), all manner of bad stuff will happen to the grass if over applied. Conversely, it will do a fantastic job if properly applied. At least that has been my experience when using the product. Good Luck! JBH |

Natural & Organic
Scotts Natural Lawn Food is formulated with natural ingredients to green and feed your lawn naturally, and it is OMRI-Listed for organic use. Apply this lawn fertilizer during any season to any grass type. For best results, feed four times a year and allow 6 to 8 weeks between application.
Use Around Kids and Pets
You don’t have to worry about waiting after application before you can use your lawn again—it is safe to walk on immediately after application! Plus, this lawn food can be used around kids and pets.
Application
For best results, apply with a Scotts drop or rotary spreader. Grass will become greener within 1 to 3 weeks after application (may vary depending on weather conditions). Can even be used with new lawns, before or after seeding or sodding. See product label for complete instructions.
Tips for Lawn Care Success
First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stresses of weeds, weather and activity.
Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn! This allows grass to use water more effectively.
Finally, water; utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10AM - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be applied in early February in South Texasits |
Answer: | Always read the label first but not to certain you would want to considering it is to treat fungus in grass and I assume your grass is dormant. That is unless you over seeded with a cool season grass. If you did just confirm on the label |
Question: | Do you apply this product with a pump sprayer? also should i buy the heritage fungicide granules as well? thanks |
Answer: | Yes, this was a concentrate that you add water to in a pump sprayer. I followed the 'Lawn Care Nut's advice and applied the heritage fungicide as well. It worked well for me. https://thelawncarenut.com/blogs/news/may-21st |

User questions & answers
Question: | When should this be applied |
Answer: | I believe that pure, high quality Rose Otto would cost you more than $500 in this size. Given that I would go with the higher concentration 10% or even up depending on how it will be applied and for what you plan to use it. |
Question: | Can this be soaked up by the roots on fruit trees or does it have to be sprayed on |
Answer: | Sorry, I have not done that blend. |
Question: | Can we use this to spray the flowers |
Answer: | We are happy to assist! You can diffuse almost every oil and this one is included! :)Have a great day! |
Question: | The bottle shows no measurements for delusion. What are they |
Answer: | It smells just like authentic rose otto, probably the best rose fragrance in the world. Unfortunately, it's been diluted so heavily with jojoba oil (a carrier oil) that there's hardly any strength to it at all. It's very weak. I personally will not buy the Aura Cacia brand again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the n-p-k for this |
Answer: | The Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium in GreenView Starter Fertilizer is 10-18-10. Thank-you! |
Question: | Can I mix the starter with the seeds? Compatible with lime |
Answer: | Look at the name & what's printed on the bag. The bag says...."Espoma Organic Bio-Tone Starter Plus All Natural Plant Food - 4 lb Bag BTS4" Espoma Organic Bio-Tone Starter Plus All Natural Plant Food |
Question: | can this be used in to put all over lawn? Will it help like regular fertilizer |
Answer: | Organic fertilizers can sometimes continue to compost if kept in a very warm place. The nitrogen heats it up further causing the ammonia smell. If the bag doesn't feel too warm, this is not a big deal, but I recommend you store it in a cool place to maintain the natural N-P-K balance and micro-organism makeup. |
Question: | What is nitrogen potassium phosph for product |
Answer: | That's all I use it on. I've used it for years and it's been great. I use it when I get plants from wherever ( nursery, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) and want to put them into pots. I use the Bio-Tone starter to be sure they get good root growth and to make sure the transfer from little nursery containers to a bigger pot are successful. |

Lazer Blue is a non-toxic concentrated colorant designed to be used with herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Lazer indicates where application spray has been made for the most accurate coverage. The colorant will fade in time with sun and moisture. Lazer is not permanent and will not stain once diluted. Avoid contact with fabric. Lazer can be removed from skin and equipment with several washes.
Directions:Add 1/2 oz.of Lazer Blue to every gallon of spray mixture. The more Lazer you use, the darker your spray pattern.
POURING ADVICE- To get the smoothest pour with no mess have the FRONT label pointing towards the sky. You need to pour slowly and closely to your container in a controlled manner. Have both hands on the bottle and allow air flow to enter the spout as your pouring, DO NOT attempt to quickly dump this product in your sprayer or spraying equipment. Slow and steady while pouring this, allow airflow to enter the spout as if you were pouring gasoline. Following these steps will prevent messes and allow you to spend more time spraying and less time cleaning!
Cleanup- Mix bleach with water and spray onto the dye, it will clear the dye like a magic trick. Make sure you ventilate the area as bleach can give off a strong smell.
- Mixes only with water based solutions, will not work with oil based
- Easily marks grass and lawns
- Mix with herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, & fertilizers
- Indicates where spray mixtures have been applied
- Non-permanent and nonstaining

Answer: | Hi, It worked for me! I had no problems! It's made to be mixed with the chemical you're spraying! I love how blue it is! Good luck! |
Question: | Can this be sprayed directly on newly sown grass seed without inhibiting germination |
Answer: | No, you should not spray this on any germinating seed. I'd advise waiting 6 weeks before spraying. |
Question: | Does it hurt the grass in your lawn |
Answer: | No, it will not hurt your lawn. |
Question: | if sprayed on your lawn, will it rub off on your clothes, shoes, skin, pets |
Answer: | I do not know about on the lawn but We spayed it on wood and everything that we touch that got any of the drips or overspray will turn blue, even after it dries. So my guess would be yes if sprayed on the lawn as well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is this products shelf life |
Answer: | Oh, nonono, you do NOT want to use this stuff inside! It works great and is super simple to measure and use confidently, and my garden has never been happier... but it smells like week old fish guts. It also features a lively chemical background note and just a hint of cowpie in the bouquet. Outside the smell isnt overpowering, but I wouldn't want to open the bottle inside! |
Question: | Is this okay to get on the foliage/leaves? Or will it burn them |
Answer: | Definitely an excellent fertilizer for your tomato garden |
Question: | Is this product good for corn |
Answer: | From my experience I think that is a tough question to fully answer because the amount of fertilizer that is recommended by Fox farm is very high. I think at 1/4 or 1/2 strength there is easily 100 gallons worth. I used the recommended amount the first time and it was way way to much imo. Well worth the money if you are not willing to brew your own tea for feed. |
Question: | Does this smell strongly? Looking to use it for indoor potted fruit trees |
Answer: | These are for Soil, but they have a set for hydroponics also |

Answer: | You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon. |
Question: | I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass |
Answer: | In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him! |
Question: | How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn |
Answer: | you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK |
Question: | Okay to use in August |
Answer: | I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would I have to apply seed if there wasn’t any grass |
Answer: | Assuming this is a joke. If you’re seeding don’t use any fertilizer to start. The grass seed needs to germinate before ever applying fertilizer. |
Question: | Can i use it with a tow behind sprayer? What would be the mix ratio |
Answer: | Not sure what the ratio would be but if you contact them I'm sure you'll get a prompt answer, customer service is great |
Question: | How much area covered by one bottle |
Answer: | Hi there, The bottle will cover up to 3,200 square feet. |
Question: | Can you also use on a garden |
Answer: | If you apply monthly. the lawn begins strengthening. In time you will notice less stress to your lawn from the heat and lack of water during the hot days. This is mainly due to the Organic kelp found in this product. Look at label and keep away from Muriate of potash if its in your Label. That is basically Chlorine and that will dry out your soil and kill microbes that turn organic waste into food for Roots. Does the same for Gardens Too |
