13 best fish fertilizer for plants
Fish fertilizer is a type of organic fertilizer made from fish or fish byproducts. It is a valuable and natural source of essential nutrients for plants and is commonly used in gardening and agriculture. Here's what you need to know about fish fertilizer for plants:
Nutrient Content: Fish fertilizer is rich in essential nutrients that plants need for healthy growth, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N-P-K). These nutrients are typically present in balanced ratios, making fish fertilizer a well-rounded option for plant nutrition.
Organic and Sustainable: Fish fertilizer is considered an organic and sustainable option for fertilizing plants because it is derived from fish waste and byproducts. It reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, making it environmentally friendly.
Nutrient Availability: One of the advantages of fish fertilizer is that the nutrients are readily available to plants. This means that plants can absorb and utilize the nutrients quickly, promoting rapid growth and green foliage.
Microbial Activity: Fish fertilizer also contains beneficial microorganisms and enzymes that can enhance soil health. These microorganisms can help break down organic matter in the soil, making nutrients more accessible to plants.
Slow Release: While fish fertilizer provides quick nutrient uptake, it also has a slow-release component. This means that it continues to feed plants over an extended period, reducing the need for frequent reapplication.
Odor: Some fish fertilizers can have a strong fishy odor, which can be a drawback for some gardeners. However, many modern fish fertilizers are processed to minimize odor.
Application: Fish fertilizer is typically available in liquid or granular forms. Liquid fish fertilizer can be diluted with water and applied directly to the soil or sprayed onto plant foliage. Granular fish fertilizer can be incorporated into the soil or used as a top dressing.
Versatility: Fish fertilizer is suitable for a wide range of plants, including vegetables, flowers, fruits, trees, and shrubs. It can be used in both container gardening and traditional garden beds.
Fish Types: Fish fertilizer can be made from various types of fish, including fish scraps, fish meal, and fish emulsion. Different types may have slightly different nutrient profiles, so it's essential to read the product label for specific information.
In summary, fish fertilizer is a natural and sustainable option for providing essential nutrients to plants. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, with additional benefits for soil health. Gardeners often use fish fertilizer to promote healthy plant growth and improve overall soil quality.

Question: | Where does the fish come from? I am trying to avoid pacific fish because of the Japanese power plant melt-down |
Answer: | This is what it says on the bottle and their website: "Neptune's Harvest is a division of Ocean Crest Seafoods Inc., established in 1965 as a wholesale fish and seafood company. Still today, our Neptune's Harvest Organic Fertilizer gets made from fresh caught North Atlantic fish right on the docks of Gloucester, MA. Unlike a fish emulsion, our fertilizers are produced using a unique cold process "without cooking out all the good stuff". Best of all, it works great on everything that grows!"So it's a Massachusetts fishing industry byproduct! :) |

Question: | will this fertilizer work on evergreen trees |
Answer: | I guess the easy answer is yes. A 5-1-1- formula really can't hurt much of any plants. The deeper question is why use this type of fertilizer on an evergreen tree in the first place. Evergreens live in an environment that primarily have a somewhat acidic soil. They don't need a fish emulsion based fertilizer, but they do like lots of nitrogen for their tremendous growth potential. And most established evergreen trees really don't need extra fertilizer anyway, and a 5-1-1- formula won't do much, if anything. I hope that helps. |

Why it works! Adding seaweed to your current fertilizing program may be the most important thing you have ever done for your home garden and houseplants. The seaweed in Sea Magic, Ascophyllum nodozum, is harvested from the cold clear waters of the North Atlantic and is quickly dried under a special procedure designed to keep its natural qualities intact. Directions: Dissolve the contents of package into a 1 gallon jug filled with warm water. This is your liquid concentrate. Store in a cool place. To use on plants in your garden, add 3 tsp. of liquid concentrate to each quart or liter of water. Or 1/2 cup to standard 2 gallon watering can. Apply every 2-3 weeks.
- Makes 66 US gallons or 250 Liters
- 1 Ounce Package (30 grams)
- Completely Soluble Seaweed Fertilizer
- Works with any current fertilizer program
- Use in your home garden on all flowers, vegetables, tomatoes, strawberries, fruit trees and shrubs, lawn, seedlings and houseplants.
User questions & answers
Question: | Once you make the concentrate, how long can that be kept before using? I made mine over a year ago, wondering if it is still good to use |
Answer: | The properties of Sea Magic are not lost over time. If stored for years the product can get an odor from fermentation but it will work the same. If the container is clean and the water used is not contaminated and the concentrate is stored in a cool, dark place the concentrate will remain in its original state for a long time. |
Question: | Does it harm soil biology |
Answer: | I have no scientific analysis to present. But all the biodynamic gardeners I consult recommend the Seaweed Extract Fertilizer. Since their main focus is nurturing healthy soil, it would follow that seaweed extract contributes to thriving, healthy soil. |
Question: | Is this Organic |
Answer: | Sea Magic is unparalleled! Entirely organic, this seaweed concentrate works wonders on flowering ornamentals, foliage plants, houseplants, shrubs -- you name it, Sea Magic will help it! |
Question: | What is the nitrogen - phosphorus - potassium ratio (npk) of this fertilizer. it's not mentioned anywhere on the package. does anyone know? thx |
Answer: | It's not listed anywhere by the company. |
- Increases vigor and volume of flowering plants
- Ideal for Flowers, Vegetables, Trees, Shrubs, and Lawns
- Helps plants tolerate drought
- Use in combination with our Tomato & Veg Fertilizer

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used in a compost tea |
Answer: | I have not used it in that manner. My apologies but I do not know. It feeds and breaks down tuff soil as I have been using it for that purpose for about 14 years. I have never mixed it with anything else but will warn you that it has a powerful odor all on it's own. Best of luck. |
Question: | Will this work great on flowering and or fruit bearing plants? How to use on these plants |
Answer: | Yes but only during the vegative stage early in the year. After that you want something with more phosphorus in it. Like a 3-9-4 for flowers and depending on the fruit tree a 2-6-4 or so. Happy Growing!!! Hope I helped u out. FYI the numbers on any box of fertilizer stands for N-P-K Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, 1st n / ph/ potash.. just Incase.. |
Question: | can this be used on indoor plants |
Answer: | I dontsee why not. Im sure your plants would love it. I would make very weak solution to use indoors as the fish smell could be very overwhelming! and if you have indoor cats-then I would not use it indoors. |
Question: | After you mix the two table spoons per gallon how much do put on each plant a cupful |
Answer: | I use 4 fluid onces, mixed with water in a 3 gallon sprayer. Then I simply spray all of the leaves and blades of my border grass, day lilies, amaryllis and other plants. Once a month with good results |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used on houseplants? Does it smell bad |
Answer: | It requires diluting with water, but it still smells quite awful. I imagine a cat would love to get into it. As for houseplants, I never tried it. Because of the odor, I'd likely avoid using it that way. There are other fertilizers you could use. |
Question: | What's the max particle size? i.e. can it be used with drip irrigation that requires filtration down to 100 micron |
Answer: | Yes, it should be no problem as we use 200 mesh filtration, triple filtered, with sub-100 micron. We've not had any complaints from our clients using drip systems. |
Question: | How much nitrogen is in it |
Answer: | It is a 2-3-1 |
Question: | Hello - sorry, another question - what's the self life of the product |
Answer: | Shelf life is 5 years plus. Thank you for the great question! |
