14 best fertilizer for hydrangeas

Fertilizing hydrangeas is essential to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Here's what you need to know about fertilizers for hydrangeas:

  1. Types of Fertilizers:

    • Balanced Fertilizer: Hydrangeas generally benefit from a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) formulation. This provides a mix of essential nutrients for overall plant health.
    • Acidic Fertilizer: If you want to influence the flower color of your hydrangeas, especially for blue hydrangeas, consider using an acidic fertilizer. These formulations are higher in phosphorus and help lower the soil's pH, making it more acidic and promoting blue flowers.
    • Slow-Release Fertilizer: Slow-release granular fertilizers can provide nutrients to hydrangeas over an extended period, reducing the frequency of application.
  2. Timing:

    • Early Spring: Apply fertilizer in early spring when the hydrangea begins to show new growth but before it starts flowering. This helps provide essential nutrients for leafy growth.
    • Late Spring or Early Summer: If you want to adjust flower color (e.g., for blue hydrangeas), apply acidic fertilizer during late spring or early summer when the flower buds are forming.
  3. Application:

    • Even Distribution: Sprinkle the fertilizer evenly around the base of the hydrangea, avoiding direct contact with the plant's stems.
    • Follow Instructions: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific fertilizer you're using, as application rates may vary.
  4. Watering:

    • After applying fertilizer, water the soil thoroughly. This helps dissolve the fertilizer and distribute it to the plant's roots.
  5. Mulch:

    • Applying mulch around the base of your hydrangeas can help conserve moisture and reduce competition from weeds, ensuring that the plants receive the full benefits of the fertilizer.
  6. Soil pH:

    • It's important to know your soil's pH. Hydrangea flower color can be influenced by soil pH, with acidic soil promoting blue flowers and alkaline soil promoting pink flowers. You can adjust soil pH with the use of acidic or alkaline amendments.
  7. Maintenance:

    • Hydrangeas may not need fertilizing every year. Assess your plants' needs based on their growth and the quality of their blooms.
  8. Varietal Differences:

    • Different hydrangea varieties may have specific fertilization requirements, so it's a good idea to research the needs of the specific hydrangea species or cultivar you are growing.

In summary, selecting the right type of fertilizer and timing your application correctly can help you achieve healthy hydrangeas with beautiful blooms. Pay attention to your soil's pH if you want to influence flower color, and remember that regular maintenance and proper care are key to the overall health of your hydrangea plants.

User questions & answers

Question: Where can i find for miracid 488 for gardenias
Answer: I have no idea. I know nothing about an Orbit yard enforcer. How do they want to connect it? With a hose?
Question: Where do you buy the sprayer designed to spray miracid
Answer: That will depend on your water pressure, as well as the spray pattern that you'd be setting up. Please contact our Support team at 1-800-488-6156 and tell us about how you'd be using this sprinkler, and we'd be happy to provide a more solid answer to your question.
Question: does this have to be mixed with water before applying to the soil
Answer: You don't. You just push each pin around to the back and let the sprinkler oscillate each direction and that gives pretty much a full circle of spray if you don't set it on gull distance and allow the spray to fan out a bit.
Question: what is the npk ratio? nitr phos. potassium
Answer: Hard to explain without the sprinkler in hand. There are two sliders on the spay head that you can adjust for a wider or narrower pattern or even a 360 degree spray. And another slider on top of the spray head to slide back and forth for a wide misty spay or very narrow hose like spray

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used for pomegranate plants
Answer: Pomegranate plants or trees can use this fertilizer, since their needs are similar, but I read that a 8-8-8 formula would be better formulation. This fertilizer ,Miracle Grow Shake'n'feed for citrus is 13-7-13.
Question: Has anyone used this product on avocado trees
Answer: I am a science teacher and have grown many Avocados from a pit, and have only used this product. Many of my trees are 1-4 years old and doing better than expected.
Question: What is the NPK ratio for this fertilizer
Answer: These answers show exactly why the product's back label (or wherever the ratio is shown) should be in the product description. We should not have to rely on someone checking a container which may not even be the same product!
Question: What is the n-p-k ratio of this product? why are we having to ask this, this is basic
Answer: A 12-4-8 NPK ratio is not a good formula for tomato fruit production. It's OK to give it this when the plant is small, but you will not get a good tomato crop if you continue with this ratio. Fruit production requires more phosphorus than this fertilizer can provide. I always have excellent fruit production with 10-10-10.

User questions & answers

Question: how do you apply this product
Answer: All Gardenias respond well to acid promoting plant foods. A good trick is to plant them, either in pots or the garden, in pure peat moss. Then you can apply a higher phosphorus (middle one of the three numbers) fertilizer to promote flower buds formation without significantly raising the Ph, since peat moss is naturally acidic. This will maintain your Gardenia intensely green and with a good number of flowers.
Question: Will this turn pink hydrangeas blue
Answer: You don't need a sprayer, just mix with water in one gallon containers and pour it around the plant. That should be plenty. As far as I know this is not a follar spray. I have been using it for years. Here's the big secret about it though. Wanna grow giant Boston ferns??? this IS THE SECRET ingredient. I highly suggest you stock up as they are discontinuing this product and renaming it, I have not had a chance to compare the two the old and the new but I bet the makeup is reduced and therefore less potent. I can't loose my reputation of growing huge ones and people coming to the door asking how do I grow them so large? So I'm stocking up in sealed plastic containers and storing in a very dry place. If left open it absorbs moisture in the air and in time it is ruined.
Question: How many hydrangea plant does this container feed
Answer: Yes
Question: I have had a hydrangeas plant for years but it never bloom will this help Otto loom
Answer: 30-10-10

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this for pink hydrangea blooms
Answer: I have not used as yet as I bought last fall. I bought it then when I was told about it. Sorry
Question: Must this product be worked into the soil for activation, or is a surface application effective
Answer: I bought it hoping it would produced blue hydrangea flowers but it hasn't yet for me. You have to use it frequently - I used it a few times and saw no difference. It's also a pain to use - It burns the leaves so you have to be careful to put it only on the soil. I was disappointed but it might be user error.
Question: I have a young maple that i planted in the spring, it does not seem to be doing well. will holly tone help to boost the growth
Answer: I only have one large hydrangea. This container will feed it every 2-3 weeks for 2 seasons. The blooms are a beautiful blue and the leaves strong and healthy.
Question: does it have a shelf life
Answer: Not really, just changes ph for more acidic soil to gain blue color. Maybe you should move it to a more sunny area. Also if you live in cold winter area, your plant needs covered to protect future blooms n the spring.

Answer: We live in New England and brought the cushions in for the long winter. According to the manufacturer, the cushions are only water-resistant. Question: Can I use this with fertilizer on blueberries without decreasing the effectiveness of either
Answer: My chairs cam 2 to a box. I ordered what I thought were 2 chairs but got 4 chairs. Not a big problem as I have a large porch. The ads were confusing.
Question: Can you use this in combination with Holly Tone
Answer: 2 chairs. Really nice. Great deal!
Question: Still waiting to see the ingredient list if I am to consider purchasing. Thanks
Answer: It say 250 lbs but my 200 lb son was sitting in one and it bent back to the ground. They are cheap. Dont waste yiue money

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be applied with the initial Spring fertilizer timeline of roses, or should it be used separately (later
Answer: Soil acidifiers are great for turning pink hydrangea blooms blue, but you’ve got to acidify the soil before the buds for next year form, so it may take two growing seasons of applying an acidifier before you see blue blooms. Be patient. ;)
Question: can it be used for rose of sharon
Answer: Works effectively both ways. I never work it into the soil, just spread it around the base of the bush/tree etc. working it into the soil might help it stay put if you live in a windy area.
Question: Looking for good spikes for my sad hydrangeas. Any idea if this might be an appropriate product? Thanks
Answer: "Not doing well" could mean many things. Fertilizer won't fix stress. Holly Tone is recommended for evergreens. Espoma does make a Tree Tone, or you could use 10-10-10, an all around fertilizer if you don't require organic. That said, Holly Tone certainly will not harm your tree, and it is fertilizer.
Question: How often should these be used? Thanks
Answer: According to the company, Holly Tone has a shelf life of 3-5 years once you open the bag, depending on how you store it. Seal it tightly and store in a cool, dry place for the longer life.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this contain any fertilizer or will that have to be purchased separately
Answer: Short answer is no. Long answer: If your diagnosis of sadness is correct disregard rest of this. I am not qualified or experienced in plant psychiatry. Your question suggests you are a novice gardner. We all began there. Get a book. I like the Southern Living Garden Book. If you live up North, I am sure Yankees have something like it. It is a little late to fertilize with a long acting agent. I would suggest a liquid or granular feeding. Make sure your soil is light with much humus. pH above 7.0 to get blue blooms and below for red. Or is it the other way around. Good luck. b
Question: Can I use this for my Annabelle hydrangea and if so what will it do will it turn the flowers in different color
Answer: The usual recommendation is not to fertilize after July 1 because new growth will be encouraged but will not be winter hardy. My azaleas have done well on one spike per year. I think too much is made of fertilizing. I see plants at unkept old houses which bloom year after year without any care at all. Once established, just prune to remove dead limbs and maintain shape and keep watered in the dry part of the summer. Too much love can kill. Good luck. b

User questions & answers

Question: What is the n-p-k for this product? i'm surprised it's not mentioned in the product description. thank you
Answer: I found it definitely encouraged growth and I had a lot more blooms. I have already added this to my hydrangea plants this spring and will add more in May. My plants did much better after adding this
Question: What are the ingredients
Answer: Hi, I originally purchased this from my local nursery, who told me if I wanted dark blue blooms, use this. They were right. Beautiful blue blooms! But, it won’t change the colors of the flowers that have already bloomed. The brownish ones... still brown:)
Question: can i use this for a Money tree plant
Answer: You can use in spring by itself . . .I would not recommend combining with additional fertilizer. The stakes are large and depending on the size of the roses, you use more than one for each bush.
Question: What is the chemical composition
Answer: Rose of Sharon is a Hibiscus plant. Jobes, Vigour and Miracle grow have a mix for hibiscus that would be more suitable for your plant.

We are always working to find sustainable solutions for a better tomorrow. We harvest the nutrients from today’s food scraps to create organic fertilizers and soils that will grow tomorrow’s food. By collecting human-grade ingredients from supermarkets and farms, we upcycle would-be food grade waste into premium fertilizers and soils. We’re proud to be Non-GMO, pathogen-free and chicken manure free which addresses food safety concerns for all organic gardeners.
