14 best crabgrass preventions

Crabgrass prevention is an essential aspect of lawn care and gardening, particularly in regions where this invasive weed is prevalent. Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) is a fast-growing, aggressive weed that can quickly take over a lawn or garden if not controlled. Here's what you need to know about crabgrass prevention:

  1. Understanding Crabgrass: Crabgrass is an annual weed that thrives in warm-season grasses like Bermuda grass and Zoysia grass. It germinates from seed each year in the spring and can spread rapidly, crowding out desirable grasses and plants.

  2. Timing: Effective crabgrass prevention starts with proper timing. Pre-emergent herbicides should be applied before the crabgrass seeds germinate, typically in the early spring when soil temperatures reach around 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 13 degrees Celsius).

  3. Pre-Emergent Herbicides: Pre-emergent herbicides are a key tool in crabgrass prevention. These herbicides create a barrier in the soil that inhibits crabgrass seedlings from sprouting. They should be applied evenly across the lawn according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Application: When applying pre-emergent herbicides, it's crucial to follow the recommended application rates and guidelines. Proper timing and even distribution are essential for their effectiveness.

  5. Soil Temperature: Monitoring soil temperature is critical for determining when to apply pre-emergent herbicides.Soil temperature can vary based on your location and climate, so consider using a soil thermometer or consulting local resources for guidance.

  6. Lawn Maintenance: Maintaining a healthy lawn can also help prevent crabgrass infestations. Proper mowing, watering, and fertilizing practices can promote strong, dense grass that competes with crabgrass.

  7. Seed Selection: When overseeding or establishing a new lawn, choose grass varieties that are less susceptible to crabgrass invasion. Some grasses, like Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, are better at outcompeting weeds.

  8. Mulch and Ground Cover: Using mulch or ground cover in garden beds and around the edges of your lawn can help prevent crabgrass from taking hold in these areas.

  9. Regular Inspection: Regularly inspect your lawn and garden for signs of crabgrass growth. If you spot any crabgrass seedlings, remove them promptly to prevent further spread.

  10. Post-Emergent Control: In cases where crabgrass has already emerged, post-emergent herbicides or manual removal may be necessary. However, prevention is more effective and less labor-intensive than trying to control established crabgrass.

Remember that crabgrass prevention is an ongoing process, and it may require yearly treatments with pre-emergent herbicides to keep your lawn crabgrass-free. Consistent maintenance practices and timely applications of herbicides are key to successful crabgrass prevention and a healthy, weed-free lawn.

User questions & answers

Question: How often do you need to apply this treatment
Answer: As often as you want as long as you do not go over the maximum amount for your turf type per year. For some turf types, that is about .83 ounces by weight of this dry granule per 1,000 sq. ft. Most typically people apply this in the late winter or early spring. Many say to put this down when the soil temps are at 55 degrees in the winter/spring, but that is when crabgrass starts to germinate. Many lawn care professionals say to put this down earlier, when the temps are 40 to 45 degrees because it is the bacteria in the soil that break down the product and at these temperatures, the bacteria are pretty much dormant. You apply at 0.185 ounces by weight per 1,000 sq. ft. (for any grass type) and that will give you 3-4 months of protection when put down at those temps above. Put down 0.28 ounces per 1,000 sq. ft. to give 4 months of protection in the fall. I apply when the night time temperatures start dropping into the low 70's and upper 60's. I saw someone say you want this down before the soil temperatures drop to 70 in the late summer/early fall, but I have not confirmed this. So if the day temps are in the 80's and 90's and the night temps are in the 70's or upper 60's, you should still be ahead of the annual weeds you're trying to prevent in the fall.
Question: Is this product safe for centipede grass thats 1 year old
Answer: This should be safe on any established grass which typically means the grass has grown enough to be mowed 4+ times. You can put it down a little earlier depending on the grass type, but better safe than sorry. If you put this down too soon you can harm the new grass while it is maturing and if you do this, the prodiamine will stop new grass seed (as well as weeds) from germinating for a few months.
Question: Will it prevent crabgrass
Answer: Yes. Prodiamine is broken down by the microbes in the soil, and the microbes do not really start to become very active until the soil temperatures are higher...like 50+ degrees (not 100% positive of what temp here, but you get the idea). Crabgrass seeds start to germinate once the ground temperatures start to reach about 55 degrees. So you can put this down when the ground temperatures are 40-45 degrees and it will still be very effective once the ground temperatures reach ~55 degrees and provide the protection you need, versus waiting until the ground temps are already at 55 degrees and you may be too late. What this does it once the crabgrass and other seeds start to germinate, Prodiamine will stop the roots from progressing once the seeds start to germinate, which kills the plant before it completely germinates and breaks through the soil. What I like to do (heard this from a lawn care professional - YouTube channel 'Pest & Lawn Ginja') is get use a cheap meat thermometer and check the soil temps and once the ground temps are around 55 degrees, put down a different pre-emergent called Dithiopyr. This will also stop seeds from fully germinating as the Prodiamine does, but Dithiopyr also acts as a post-emergent for very young weeds and crabgrass up to 2-3 tillers. So you get early protection and a second layer of protection if required.
Question: will it work with no pre mixing sprayer connected to water hose? if so, is setting of 2tsp for one gallon will work
Answer: I wouldn't recommend it. Prodiamine, straight out of the container, is in granular form. Each granule is about 1 mm in diameter. All the hose end sprayers I know of require dispensing of the product as a liquid. For my application, which is to treat for Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua) in a Zoysia lawn, I used a 3 gallon backpack tank sprayer. I measured 3/4 Tbsp. Prodiamine and poured it into a quart container. I then added 3 cups water and mixed the two together into a concentrate. I then poured the concentrate into the backpack tank sprayer and added water to make 3 gallons. 3 gallons will treat 750 sq. ft. The amount to use is 1/4 Tbsp. Prodiamine per gallon of water. Each gallon will treat 250 sq. ft.There are 3 tsp. in a Tbsp.

User questions & answers

Question: It is ok to put Weed and Feed after putting this product but before 30 days are over. Says at the back to wait for 30 days before another application
Answer: You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon.
Question: I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass
Answer: In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him!
Question: How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn
Answer: you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK
Question: Okay to use in August
Answer: I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum.

Get An Early Start This Spring

Protect your lawn all season long against listed weeds, including crabgrass, all while feeding for a fast green-up after winter.

When To Apply To Prevent Weeds

Apply in early spring to prevent the germination of crabgrass, chickweed, poa annua, and other common lawn weeds, before they start to spread. Apply before the 3rd or 4th mowing to protect all season long.

Tips For Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stress of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally water, utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10 am - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this in vegetable garden
Answer: No strap. Easy to carry by the handle though.
Question: will it harm earthworms
Answer: I no longer have the box it came but the tank has "20020" in raised plastic written on it. However, in looking at the item listed as 'Chapin 20020" there is a differnce in the wand tip, the spray lever does not lock 'on' (looks like there is a place for piece of plastic to slide for locking), and there may be a few other differences. It may be that Chapin uses the same tank and takes away some bits of plastic to make stripped down models.
Question: Can I use with crabgrass preventer
Answer: This is NOT the right model for spraying sealers and/or stains. The correct models are 25010, 25012, 25020, and 30600. See the Chapin website.
Question: Does this kill Vine Weevil grubs? Thank you
Answer: It will vary based on the product you are using so read the directions carefully for every product you spray. But in general, 1 gallon for 1,000 sq. ft. That said, I just used it on a lawn bowling green which is about 14,000 sq. ft. The pesticide I used said 1 gallon to cover 1,000 sq. ft. That would have been 12 gallons to cover the green, but when I had finished I used half that amount. This may have been because I walked too fast (I walked about the pace I do when I spread fertilizer). So, depending on how fast you walk, how comprehensive you want your coverage to be, and what the pesticide label suggest, I would say 1 gallon covers at least 1,000 sq. ft and at most 2,000 sq. ft. I also recommend using a dye/colorant so you can tell where you have sprayed and how think the coverage is.

Question: what kind of spreader & on what setting
Answer: I set a Scotts Speedygreen 2000 on 9. I saw a pretty fair improvement in lawn health last year.
Question: Will this work in flowerbeds to prevent weed germination? Looking for an organic alternative to Preen
Answer: It's not a weed killer. In my experience, it makes the grass grow faster and thicker and thus the weeds are squeezed out and don't get a good foothold. But in flower beds, you're not growing grass.
Question: Will this help get rid of clover
Answer: As far as my experience goes with corn gluten in general it will not affect clover. It's only effective against germination of dandelion seeds and only in the common ones found in the Midwest. Not the different types found in the Northwest.
Question: How many square feet does it cover
Answer: if I rember correctly -it would have been enough to do my whole yard(average subdivision lot) ...go to dirt doctor.com and search this on howard's site..

Question: difference between this product and roundup for lawns, is either less toxic, less likely to kill grass
Answer: I Believe ingredients in Roundup For Lawns are MCPA, quinclorac, dicamba and sulfentrazone. These herbicides are effective on a broad range of weeds  This is topramezone, more specific for crabgrass... It works... took 3 weeks for total effect for me ( took almost a week to start seein white) I tested a patch of clover and it worked on that too.. I like that i can spot treat vs layin out a toxic rug for wildlife.. at least they can avoid the spot im workin on..

User questions & answers

Question: Can you seed after you lay this product
Answer: google kudzu and learn how it was introduced into north america and spread through its use as a soil stabilizer during road building projects during the depression. it is an invasive species. repeated applications of Bonide should keep it in check - but it may be a long battle. be careful not to spray Bionide on desired species.
Question: It’s a factor for dandelions
Answer: Maybe once a month. It takes longer then roundup to see results. Almost 2 weeks but nothing comes back and I use half as much toma gallon vs. roundup. I like it much better.
Question: Does this come with a shaker, or do you need a spreader to use
Answer: No, it kills anything you spray at. So be careful when you spray weeds

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product work like Tupersan, which won't harm new (non-crabgrass) grass seed planted at the same time
Answer: I have 18-19" calves and they fit me w room to spare
Question: Can this Product be applied in the fall
Answer: When I contacted a representative from the company, she explained to me that if your calf is 16" or larger, you will want to get the XL Gravity Boots. Unfortunately, she wasn't so sure on any ankle measurements though. I hope that helps.
Question: is this safe for bermuda grass
Answer: I order a pair of Teeter cobra XL. I found it to be more stronger and give better support than the Blue teeter gravity. I work out 5 days a we and my Buddy just happen to have own the blue teeter gravity boots. I feel for 247 lb man hanging from them, they feel like it going to break on me. I love the cobra & my feel the same he jusst order a pair too.
Question: Is this product pet-safe? I have a 9 week old golden retriever
Answer: Short answer: No. Long answer: Inversion can help relax the discs between vertebrae and give you slightly more height for a short while, much like when you first wake up. But after a time, you will return to your regular height. If you want more height, break your legs and stretch them out bit by bit (a la “Gattaca”) or purchase lifts for your shoes.
