14 best corn gluten meal for lawns
Corn chips are a popular snack made from cornmeal that is deep-fried or baked until crisp. They are a staple in many households and are commonly enjoyed on their own or with various dips and toppings.
Here are some key points about corn chips:
Ingredients: The main ingredients in corn chips are corn masa flour, water, and salt. Additional flavorings and seasonings can be added for variation.
Production: The process of making corn chips involves mixing corn masa flour with water to form a dough. This dough is then shaped into thin sheets, cut into triangles or other shapes, and cooked through methods like frying or baking.
Varieties: There are various types of corn chips available in the market. Some are plain, while others are flavored with spices, cheese, or other seasonings.
Texture: Corn chips are known for their crunchy texture, which is achieved through the cooking process. They are often thicker and sturdier than potato chips, making them a popular choice for dipping into salsa, guacamole, or other dips.
Nutritional Information: Corn chips are a source of carbohydrates, providing energy. They are also typically high in fat and sodium, so it's important to consume them in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
Popular Brands: There are many well-known brands that produce corn chips, including Doritos, Fritos, Tostitos, and many more. Each brand may have its own unique flavors and styles.
Uses: Corn chips are versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes. They are commonly used as a base for nachos, where they are topped with cheese, jalapeños, and other toppings. They can also be crushed and used as a crunchy coating for dishes like chicken tenders.
Storage: Like most snacks, corn chips should be stored in an airtight container to maintain their freshness and crunchiness.
Cultural Significance: Corn chips have cultural significance in many parts of the world, especially in countries like Mexico where they are a staple food item. They are often associated with traditional dishes like nachos, which have become popular worldwide.
Gluten-Free Option: Corn chips are typically gluten-free, which makes them a suitable snack for individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
Remember, while corn chips can be a tasty treat, they should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. If you have specific dietary concerns or health conditions, it's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I use this before or after I fertilize my lawn in the Fall |
Answer: | I wouldn't necessarily use this in the Fall. September is a nice cool month to do some reseeding, and you can't put this down within 6 weeks of seeding the lawn. I tend to do a March application and a 2nd April application, leaving me a window to seed the lawn in June. Always remember, June and September are the 2 best months to seed your lawn. I also wouldn't put this down in the fall because crabgrass does not tend to germinate in the fall, it germinates in March and April. |
Question: | Is this effective against crabgrass |
Answer: | I used it for the first time this season. I couldn't see that it did anything although I understand that it should be used for 3 consecutive seasons to see significant results. I wasn't pleased with the size of the pellets (rabbit food size). It took several rain events for the product to dissolve. Maybe this is better but it just wasn't what I expected. In the spring I plan to use a chemical crabgrass preventer. I'm changing over to a zoysia lawn. Zoysia may go dormant and turn brown in the winter but it requires no watering and less mowing in summer. In a few seasons I won't need any fertilizer or weed killer (except for spot treatments). |
Question: | Can this be used in the garden as well as the lawn |
Answer: | Does this kill the grasses that produce those nasty "Foxtails"? I have animals, vegetable garden, etc. and need a better way to kill these weeds/grasses before they produce the foxtails. Trying to "weed-wacker" them down before they get the foxtails is not always possible for me due to health issues. |
Question: | Is this a good product to use on gravel walkways to avoid weed growth |
Answer: | Mike McGrath says: Spread even the finest quality corn gluten on established weeds like those walkway ones, however, and you'll simply be feeding them. Mulch, vinegar, flame, hoeing and/or hand pulling are the answer here-and in that large-scale, Master Gardener situation. Yes, you could prevent future weeds by dusting with corn gluten every six weeks, but it would be hugely expensive and you'd be wasting all that great nitrogen fertilizer if there weren't 'wanted' plants growing in that area. (See below.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | When do you spread corn gluten during the year |
Answer: | It depends on what hardiness zone you are in as to exactly when. Best to apply corn gluten 2X a year, timing your applications so that corn gluten is in the grass prior to the major weed emergence period. In my area, which is zone 5, I like to spread it late March, early April and then again in late August/early September. Corn gluten works by causing newly sprouted plants to dry up and die. It does not kill existing weeds. So pay attention to when the most weeds seem to be coming up and mark your calendar so you become familiar with the 'best' time for your area. Too, corn gluten tends to become more effective the longer you use it....so year one is not as effective as year three. |
Question: | What square footage does this bag cover |
Answer: | See closeup of product. It should show the square footage. Usually 2000 to 2500 square feet. |
Question: | Can this be used on top of wood chips |
Answer: | It should sink through, especially with the rain. Sometimes they say water it in right away. |
Question: | Will this kill existing weeds |
Answer: | Best to use before weeds appear. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what kind of spreader & on what setting |
Answer: | I set a Scotts Speedygreen 2000 on 9. I saw a pretty fair improvement in lawn health last year. |
Question: | Will this work in flowerbeds to prevent weed germination? Looking for an organic alternative to Preen |
Answer: | It's not a weed killer. In my experience, it makes the grass grow faster and thicker and thus the weeds are squeezed out and don't get a good foothold. But in flower beds, you're not growing grass. |
Question: | Will this help get rid of clover |
Answer: | As far as my experience goes with corn gluten in general it will not affect clover. It's only effective against germination of dandelion seeds and only in the common ones found in the Midwest. Not the different types found in the Northwest. |
Question: | How many square feet does it cover |
Answer: | if I rember correctly -it would have been enough to do my whole yard(average subdivision lot) ...go to dirt doctor.com and search this on howard's site.. |

Answer: | Yes. It is guaranteed minimum analysis 60% crude protein. |

Answer: | It is not designed for animal consumption, and I'm not qualified to say whether it would be safe or not. The product is designed to be a form of natural fertilizer for lawns and gardens. |
Question: | do you water this in after application. I'm using it in a raised bed for tomatoes |
Answer: | Yes. Watering it in is a good idea. But to also get the weed-control effect (if that is desirable for your situation) you do want it to not be soaking wet all the time. So let it dry our a bit in between waterings. |
Product description
Corn gluten is a by-product of wet milling process to make cornstarch. It is an animal feed for cattle, poultry, other livestock, fish and some dog foods. It also contains naturally occurring substances, which inhibit the growth of seed's tiny feeder roots by causing a break down in the cell wall. The seedlings struggle to get enough moisture, which causes them to die before they ever have a change to take hold. When used as directed, corn gluten acts as a preemergent natural herbicide that will not harm beneficial insects, soil organisms, pond or stream life. It is also safe around pets and children. Since corn gluten kills only the roots of sprouting seeds, it can be used around transplants and established vegetables, flowers, fruit, shrubs and lawns. It can be used even up to the day of harvest. Once vegetable or flower seedlings have true leaves, it is then safe to apply corn gluten. Apply 10-20 lbs. per 1000 square feet in the Spring & Fall for pre-emergent protection. This Corn Gluten Meal is granulated and easy to apply with a spreader. Homogenous pellet provides uniform nutrient and herbicide distribution. This product can also be applied as a regular nitrogen fertilizer in the Summer. Recommended for the control of curlydock, purslane, clover, dandelions, crabgrass and many other common weeds. Proper application provides up to 90% effective weed control in the first year for dandelions and crabgrass. Safe for children, pets and wildlife immediately after application. Can be applied at any time without burning. Water thoroughly after application then allow to dry for 2-3 days.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work on goat head weeds |
Answer: | Works on all plant types, you need to apply during the specific plants seed germination period. So knowing when that plants seed germinate in your area, as this is a pre imergant, If you apply at wrong time, since this is also a very powerful fertilizer, your targeted weed will grow really well. My guess is apply product in early spring for best results, and expect 60% effectiness, which BTW is better that chemical pre imergents. |
Question: | liter concentrate or 1 liter of the mixed per 1000 square feet ? I know it has to be diluted to use |
Answer: | It's before dilution. The container says it covers 10,000 sq ft. The container holds 2.64 gallons, when converted to metric is 10 liters. So 10,000 sq ft divided by 10 liters is 1 liter per 1000 sq ft, undiluted. Seems to me they should state this clearly somewhere, we shouldn't have to do detective work to figure it out. |
Question: | Hello, is this product labeled "pre-emergent herbicide" or weed control |
Answer: | Pre-emergent , will act as fertilizer on seeds that are up and growing. |
Question: | How many ounces , tsp or tbs, per gallon in a hose-end sprayer |
Answer: | I use a 20-gallon hose end sprayer, so I just fill the sprayer & it automatically portions out 1 oz/gallon. |

Answer: | Slow release. |
Question: | My back yard was just seeded with new grass. I was told to fertilize it once the grass just comes up, with a 20-15-10 mix. Will this fertilizer work |
Answer: | Hi, J. Catlin! Ratio of Scotts Lawn Food is 32-0-4 on a new bag that I have- the 15k sq ft bag has long been thrown in the trash. I elected to not use the bag I have left because it would have been TOO MUCH on my lawn!. This is NOT one of those items where ,if a little bit does a little good... you know the rest! You must follow the directions when using this product!!! As you can see from the first number (nitrogen), all manner of bad stuff will happen to the grass if over applied. Conversely, it will do a fantastic job if properly applied. At least that has been my experience when using the product. Good Luck! JBH |

Natural & Organic
Scotts Natural Lawn Food is formulated with natural ingredients to green and feed your lawn naturally, and it is OMRI-Listed for organic use. Apply this lawn fertilizer during any season to any grass type. For best results, feed four times a year and allow 6 to 8 weeks between application.
Use Around Kids and Pets
You don’t have to worry about waiting after application before you can use your lawn again—it is safe to walk on immediately after application! Plus, this lawn food can be used around kids and pets.
Application
For best results, apply with a Scotts drop or rotary spreader. Grass will become greener within 1 to 3 weeks after application (may vary depending on weather conditions). Can even be used with new lawns, before or after seeding or sodding. See product label for complete instructions.
Tips for Lawn Care Success
First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stresses of weeds, weather and activity.
Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn! This allows grass to use water more effectively.
Finally, water; utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10AM - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used as a pre-emergent for new sod |
Answer: | Yes, and even if it isn't the best per-emergent (vs the chemicals that is) -- it works fairly well especially year over year (gets better the more times you use it). Plus it is a nice fertilizer as well. |
Question: | How do I spread it? The bag says by hand or by spreader. Whitch spreader is the best choice |
Answer: | I use the Scott's Handy Green but any spreader will work just fine. Just be sure to set your particular brand according to the rate listed on the bag. It's specific for each model. |
Question: | Does this use organic corn gluten |
Answer: | This product is not organic. |
Question: | Can you use it on flower gardens |
Answer: | This product can be used in flower beds when the flowers have true leaves. If weeds have emerged, we recommend pulling those weeds before applying. |

Stop Weeds From Growing, Before They Start
The best way to control weeds in your lawn and garden is to prevent them from growing there in the first place. Weed Prevention Plus by Concern is an easy-to-use, effective pre-emergent herbicide, which means it kills weeds before they sprout. By applying to your lawn, garden and flowerbeds at the first signs of spring, you can tackle weeds underground - before they become a problem. Made of 100% corn gluten meal - a by-product of the cornstarch manufacturing process - Weed Prevention Plus is all natural, non-burning, odor-free and won’t harm surrounding lawn, plants or wildlife.
Naturally Promotes Green Up and Leaf Growth
Not only does corn gluten safely prevent young weeds from germinating, but it also promotes green up in established lawns and plants. Corn gluten is naturally high in nitrogen, which is an essential nutrient that makes your lawn greener, faster.
Lawns
Spread Weed Prevention Plus across your entire lawn in early spring to prevent weeds and to promote a fast green up. One 5 lb. bag will cover up to 250 sq. ft.
Fruit/Vegetable Gardens
Use this natural herbicide freely around sprouted edible crops up until the day of harvest. Be sure to wait 6 weeks after application to plant new seeds.
Flowerbeds
Protect your precious flowers and bulbs from weed destruction with a nitrogen-rich formula that simultaneously nourishes established plants.
Walkways and Driveways
Sprinkle in between cracks of walkways, driveways and patios to prevent weeds from sprouting and destroying your foundation.
Apply a Pre-Emergent Herbicide
Weed Prevention Plus is best used at the onset of spring, before weeds begin to grow (when crocuses begin to bloom or when forsythia blooms start to drop), and in late summer. Be sure to apply when the forecast shows no rain for a few days following application. Wait 6 weeks to plant any new grass, flowers, vegetables or ornamentals.
Spray Established Weeds
Because Weed Prevention Plus is so rich in Nitrogen, it won’t kill established weeds - it will only promote their growth. Instead, spray a contact herbicide for organic gardening, like Safer Brand Weed & Grass Killer, directly onto sprouted weeds.
Cover Dead Weeds with Mulch
Prevent re-growth of the weeds you killed by placing mulch on top of the sprayed area.

User questions & answers
Question: | So anderson's innova 7-1-2 (soy meal) contains amino acids but andersons super juice 7-1-2 does not |
Answer: | Yes, Innova which is SOY based, granular, organic fertilizer has amino acids. Completely different product from the spray Super Juice. |
Question: | Cancel other service |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Could you spray this through a backpack sprayer |
Answer: | You could but we would not recommend.. here is why. 1) There is a good chance you’ll have clogs. They have TINY holes. 2) You’ll be putting down the mix in a very concentrated spray ratio of water / Super Juice. It’s better to use MORE water which will not only cover the blades of grass but also send some to the roots. Example: Many professional lawn chemicals such as pre-emergents give you recommended gallons of water per 1000 sq ft to use when applying. This not only prevents plant damage but helps deliver the chemicals to the correct areas. |
Question: | Full strength is .0437lb of n per 1k at a 14-2-4;half rate of 7-1-2 is .0219 lb of n per 1k. i need to apply near 1/8 lb of n per 1k is that |
Answer: | I have a 4500 sqft yard, the product states that it covers 42000 sqft. 42000/4500 means I can apply this to my yard just over 9 times. 9 applications * .14 lbs of nitrogen = 1.3 pounds of nitrogen for my entire yard for 80 dollars... definitely more expensive than, but i guess you're paying for the micros |

How much water to use?
It does not matter if you use one gallon of water to apply or three gallons of water to apply. You will still be applying the same amount of (dry mix) nutrients to the lawn. The only difference is that you can take your TIME spraying it on and not be running around like a mad man out of breath at the end.
How much dry mix to use?
Most people will apply at a 14-2-4 ratio in the spring and fall, then switch over to the 7-1-2 during the summer months. If you want to apply at a 14-2-4 ratio, use 1/4 of a bag. You can also convert to CUPS if you want. 1 CUP of DRY mix will treat approx. 1500 sq ft at a 14-2-4 rate. If mixing at 7-1-2 ratio then one cup will treat roughly 3000 sq ft.
