14 best core lawn aerator
A core lawn aerator, often referred to as a lawn aerator or aerating machine, is a specialized garden tool used to improve the health and vitality of a lawn by perforating the soil and removing small plugs of earth, known as cores or plugs. Here's what you should know about core lawn aerators:
Aeration Purpose: The primary purpose of lawn aeration is to alleviate soil compaction and improve the flow of air, water, and nutrients to the grassroots. It allows for better penetration of oxygen, which is essential for the health of the soil's microorganisms and the development of strong grass roots.
Core Removal: Core lawn aerators are equipped with hollow tines or spikes that penetrate the soil and pull out small cores of soil. These cores are left on the lawn's surface and eventually break down, contributing organic matter back into the soil.
Benefits: Aeration provides several benefits to the lawn, including enhanced root growth, increased drought resistance, improved nutrient uptake, and reduced thatch buildup. It also promotes the development of a thicker, healthier turf.
Timing: The best time to aerate your lawn depends on the type of grass you have. For cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and fescue, aerating in the early fall or spring is ideal. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda grass are best aerated in late spring or early summer.
Aerator Types: There are various types of lawn aerators, including manual aerators (with a foot-operated lever), tow-behind aerators (attached to a garden tractor or ATV), and self-propelled aerators (powered by a gas engine). Core aerators are the most common type for residential use.
Spacing and Depth: Proper aeration involves spacing the core holes evenly across the lawn and achieving a sufficient depth of penetration. Typically, core holes should be 2-4 inches apart and penetrate the soil to a depth of 2-4 inches.
Post-Aeration Care: After aerating your lawn, it's recommended to fertilize and water the area to encourage grass recovery and reduce stress on the grass plants. This is also a good time to overseed if needed.
Thatch Management: Lawn aeration can help reduce thatch buildup, which is a layer of dead grass and organic matter that can hinder water and nutrient absorption. The cores left on the lawn surface can help break down thatch over time.
Rental Options: If you don't have your own lawn aerator, you can often rent one from a garden or equipment rental store. Alternatively, you can hire professional lawn care services to perform aeration for you.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of your core lawn aerator is essential to ensure it functions effectively. This includes cleaning the tines or spikes, lubricating moving parts, and inspecting the machine for wear and tear.
Regular lawn aeration is a key practice in lawn care, promoting healthier grass growth and improving the overall appearance and vitality of your lawn. It is typically performed once or twice a year, depending on your specific lawn conditions and needs.

Question: | Can i get an exact diameter on the plugs it makes? i'm trying to compare to the hound dog. bigger holes let more air in and plugs might eject easier |
Answer: | Agree with those who say spikes do nothing to aerate a lawn. You do not see any commercial lawn care professionals use spikers. You need to plug to make any difference. |
Question: | Are the cores tapered or straight? Sometimes straight pipe cores will clog when tapered cores clear out more easily in clay soil |
Answer: | Haven't tried it; but I think it would be difficult. |
Question: | Spike versus core aerator |
Answer: | The CAT 0 Implement is designed to be used as a rear grading blade and designed for garden tractor/ATV/UTV usage. |
Question: | Has anyone tried using 2 of these at the same time one for each foot? I have one like it but think two could save time on areas too small power equip |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this useful to use on bare clay soil to create holes then fill with organic soil to amend the soil for future planting |
Answer: | Our soil is clay-like and it worked quite well. I aerated 2-3 days after a heavy rain and the plugs mostly didn't stick. IF they did, the tool to remove them works well, but make sure you get all of the dirt/clay smudging the sides of the "tines." Otherwise it will plug back up. I probably should have waited an extra day or two so the soil was drier and less prone to sticking. I do recommend using only two of the four tines at the beginning. The manufacturer recommends only using 4 tines for healthy lawns. Once the holes are made, you can fill them with organic soil, compost, or whatever you want to amend the soil. This does make big holes, not like the tines on a pitch fork. . |
Question: | distance between tines, side to side? I generally want holes every three inches (76 mm |
Answer: | The side-to-side distance is about 7.75 inches. You can achieve about three inches or even smaller spacing by yawing the aerator sideways each time. The two wheels will allow you to yaw or move the aerator easily. The front-to-back distance, if both tines are used, is 3.75 inches. We recommend using both sets of tines in very moist soil only. |
- 🌿Durable Structure: Our manual lawn aerator is made of high-quality cast iron with long service life, 34 inches high and 9 inches wide.
- 🌿Premium Garden Lawn Aeration: This manual lawn plug aerator and weeder can reduce compaction and thatch, allowing air, water and fertilizer to enter the root area. At the same time, it stimulates root growth by "pruning" the root.
- 🌿Deep Soil Penetration: The lawn core aerator can rejuvenate the old lawn while reducing water and fertilizer. By better absorbing air, water and fertilizer, and promoting root growth, the drought and heat resistance of the turf can also be enhanced.
- 🌿Easy to Use: The comfortable "T" shaped cushion handle is easy to operate, provides a natural posture when inflated to reduce back tension, and is easy to refill the entire yard. The wide foot rod provides sufficient leverage and reduces the amount of work required.
- 🌿Customer Care: We will always pay attention to customer satisfaction. If you have any questions, please let us know and we will answer them at any time. I hope you will like our dethatcher tool and look forward to your joining.
User questions & answers
Question: | Is it good for grass seeding? Prepare soil |
Answer: | Not effective. Best to rent a rototiller to turn up soul before planting. |
Question: | How about the material and weld quality of coring aerator detatch |
Answer: | Not sure about ladies sizes but my 7yo son wore them around the yard no problem. |
Question: | Is the handle inflated |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | How do you clean the soil in coring aerator |
Answer: | That's what I used them for. It really depends how much top soil you have in that bare spot. If there's not enough, you might want to add some fill to it before aerating. If there's enough soil depth, then aerating with these will be fine for reseeding in existing lawn or in bare spots. Be sure that you've dethatched any of the bare spots so that you're seeding in soil and not on dead grass (thatch) |

MIXXIDEA Lawn Aerator
Aeration is a lawn care practice designed to create openings in lawn turf and the underlying soil structure in order to penetrate the root and thatch layer and allow essential water and air down into the soil where it can better reach the grassroots.
These are specifically designed for a measured depth of hole into the turf. Hand aerators are cost efficient and they are also great for small gardens. A great example of a hand aerator is a pitch fork or a hollow tine aerator. A hollow tine aerator removes a plug of soil which helps prevent the hole simply closing up again.

MIXXIDEA Garden Lawn Aerator
If you love your garden, you will know very well how soil under your lawn can dry-out in hot weather. The ground can become compressed which means that water, air, nutrients, and fertilizer may find it difficult to penetrate the soil in order to reach the roots. Ultimately, this can damage the health of your garden. As a result of using our manual garden tiller the roots of the lawn have access to air, water, nutrients, and fertilizer, the lawn can then grow better and become more healthy and more attractive.
How to Aerate Your Lawn with our Lawn Dethatcher Tool?
Always water the lawn thoroughly a day or two before you plan to aerate so that the soil gets soft and moist. Hand-held yard weasel with foot rod provides the additional force. This helps the roots to grow deeply, which in turn produces a stronger and beautiful lawn. Just stand wherever you need to farm, ventilate or turn, then place your head on the soil and step on the pedal when fully upright.
- THE BEST TOOL FOR LAWN AERATION: This essential lawn tool does not clog, will not break and is designed to work on any type of turf. Your lawn and the soil under it needs to breathe, but the build-up of lawn thatch inhibits this. The Truly Holey Manual Lawn Aerator Tool breaks up compacted soil, allowing water and fertilizer to penetrate into the root zone, encouraging faster growth and healthier grass or turf.
- DEEPER SOIL PENETRATION: Utilizing the foot bar on our lawn aerator tool will ensure deeper turf aerification, creating soil cores, on average, as deep as your index finger, even in hard clay or high traffic areas. The aerating tines never clog up and soil cores eject easily. You will be confident that your lawn has been fully aerated.
- DURABLE STEEL CONSTRUCTION: Our lawn aerator tool is made with heavy-duty yet lightweight steel that meets the highest quality standards. It is powder-coated in Golf Ball white so it is easy to find on any landscape. The “T” bar handle is easy to grip and provides a more natural stance while aerating. We have full confidence that this tool will last you for many years to come, which is why we offer a lifetime warranty on our welds.
- BUSINESS OR RESIDENTIAL USE: Whether you own or work for a lawn care business or are simply a garden or lawn care enthusiast, our lawn aerator is sure to be your new must-have tool. Truly Holey is perfect for small problem turf areas such as diseased or dry spots. It will get into those tight corners, narrow park strips, as well as in between stepping stones and tree roots where a machine has no chance. You will finally be able to ensure lawn perfection.
- THE FOUR SEASONS DIFFERENCE: Since 1981, we have been the industry leader in the service of aerating and dethatching lawns in San Diego County, California. In the 38 years that our company has been in business, we have never had a Truly Holey wear out. It is our company’s policy to conduct our business in a manner that gives full attention to every detail for our customers.
User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used it on soil with high clay content |
Answer: | Yes, but not when it's wet. Maybe the best time would be a week after good rain, but before the hot sun hardens the clay. |
Question: | Is the 40" height from the handle to the tip of the aerating plugs, or is it from the handle to the foot bar |
Answer: | I measured 38" from the handle to the end of the aeration tines and 30" from the handle to the foot bar. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | Not sure country of origin. I will say it is VERY sturdy. The tubing is thick and the welds are solid. All of the manual lawn aerators take a good physical work out to do large areas and are more meant for problem lawn spots that see a lot of traffic and get packed down. Also for dry, hard soil spots. I did my small inner city yard with it. It took me 3, two hour sessions to get it all done. Plus side, you get a good workout, DEEP holes, much deeper than a powered aerator. Down side, if you are not physically fit, this may not be for you. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many sq ft does one unit cover |
Answer: | 1 oz. of product per 1000 sq. ft of lawn. Or 1 quart per 32,000 sq. ft of lawn. |
Question: | What is the mix per gallon of water |
Answer: | For lawns use 1 oz per 1000 ft square. 1 32 oz bottle will cover 32,000 ft square. The water per thousand is not so measured as the actual product to be applied. Meaning if you apply a little more water or less water per 1000 ft 2 it will not effect the outcome as long as your use 1 oz per 1000 ft 2. Remember you need to water in the first few inches of the soil and each time you irrigate or when water is applied you will improve soil structure and this will work better. |
Question: | Does it work |
Answer: | Unlike others surfactants that just makes standing water thinner to seep through cracks in soil. This works on the physical soil structure. When combined with water it surrounds the soil colloid. Slowly surrounding that colloid and it begins to separate its bond with other soil colloids. it adheres a micro film bubble around the colloid keeping it separate. If you apply and find it didn't work up to your expectation. You most likely either have a severe compaction problem or real dry soil. It should work a little each time you irrigate or receive a rainfall. Depending on your soil condition It should improve soil structure for weeks or months to come after application. |

- LIQUID LAWN AERATION & SOIL LOOSENING: PetraTools Liquid Lawn Aerator is a liquid soil conditioner that effectively softens the soil. Allows water, fertilizer, and nutrients deep into the ground for healthier soil and greater rooting.
- SUPER CONCENTRATE 2-ACRE COVERAGE: This is a hyper-concentrate liquid aerator that covers up to 2 acres and trusted by top commercial agricultural professionals in the North East USA. Unlike other diluted aerators that don’t even cover an acre, this is a professional formula that, when applied with a sprayer, can cover 2 acres, allowing you to cover more area and save money on your aeration.
- ULTIMATE OXYGENATION BOOSTER: Aerating lawns effectively breaks hard soil. Our lawn aerator effortlessly breaks hardpan and softens clay buildup. This makes hydration and absorption of other liquid nutrients into the root zone soil easier. Now you can get a healthier lawn with increased oxygen, water and nutrients.
- REMOVE STAGNANT WATER AND PENETRATE DEEP: Because our liquid soil loosener powerfully softens the ground, it prevents pooling of water and other liquids at the surface. Makes soil absorption easier and quicker allowing water and roots to penetrate deep to maximize their nutrient intake.

You can now easily cover your entire lawn and don't have to worry about sprinklers, wires or fences. User questions & answers
Question: | What is the rate per gallon of water |
Answer: | I tow it with a rear engine 13.5 hp sears 30" mower..so reaching the adjustment handle is near impossible to reach from my seat. I need to get off the tractor to lift and reset at each pass meeting pavement. It is not extremely heavy but more oxy and clumsy if you need to personally lift it and move it. But if you have a open spot in a shed or garage where as you can back in and hook it up and do your aerating it shoukd be fine. I absolutely love mine. |
Question: | Would like to know the ingredients of this lawn aerator, please |
Answer: | About 7inch, enough to fit in my VIVOHOME small bird bath, and I use its four rods to fix the fountain so that it is in the center of the birdbath, perfect! |
Question: | What is the rate per gallon of water for a cool-season lawn? wondering if it is more efficient to buy my own sls and mix it myself |
Answer: | Yes, you can try as you like, and there are user manual and description all tell us how to do that. |
