14 best shade grass seeds
Shade grass seeds are specific types of grass seeds that are specially designed to thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These grass varieties are adapted to grow well in shaded conditions, such as under trees, along buildings, or in areas with other obstructions that block direct sunlight. Here are some key points about shade grass seeds:
Shade Tolerance: Shade grass seeds are chosen for their ability to tolerate low light conditions. They are often a mix of different grass species, including fine fescue, creeping red fescue, and others, which are known for their shade tolerance.
Grass Varieties: Some common shade-tolerant grass varieties include fine fescue blends, Kentucky bluegrass, and certain types of perennial ryegrass. These varieties are selected for their ability to grow in areas where traditional grasses may struggle.
Benefits: Shade grass seeds are ideal for areas in your lawn or garden where sunlight is limited. Planting shade-tolerant grass can help maintain a green and lush lawn even in areas with partial to full shade.
Planting: When planting shade grass seeds, it's important to prepare the soil properly, ensuring good drainage and using the appropriate grass seed mix for your specific shade conditions. Follow the instructions on the seed packaging for best results.
Maintenance: Like any other type of grass, shade grass requires regular maintenance, including watering, fertilizing, and mowing. However, it may need less frequent mowing compared to grass varieties that thrive in full sun.
Choosing the Right Seed Mix: The choice of shade grass seed mix may depend on factors such as the degree of shade, climate, and personal preferences. There are various blends available on the market to suit different conditions.
It's important to note that while shade grass seeds can thrive in shaded areas, no grass variety will grow well in complete darkness. Some degree of sunlight is necessary for any plant to photosynthesize and grow. Therefore, selecting the right type of grass seed and providing proper care are essential for a successful lawn or garden in shaded areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out – even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.

A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?

All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.

User questions & answers
Question: | would it look natural as a "filler" with existing grass? - I have patches in my centipede possibly because of over-shaded areas |
Answer: | This Pennington grass will grow in your overly-shaded area, keep it watered until it’s well established. It will look different than centipede grass, however it grows well and it’s green. That’s a win to me. |
Question: | Best time to put down in Michigan? Spring or fall |
Answer: | Fall but it's now going to be too cold in Michigan. The seeds will freeze at night. However, Pennington is great in spring as well......so if you have already had your frost, wait until spring. This winter will be below average in temps and above average in snowfall, so if you want to wait until spring that is totally okay as it will just go to waste if you do it now. Warmer zones are even getting their first Frost Advisories already. I will say this is the best grass seed on the market. I wouldn't use any other brand. Pricey but high quality and you get what you pay for. It is 200% worth it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see |
Answer: | How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass. |
Question: | What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s |
Answer: | Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark |
Question: | Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate |
Answer: | No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate. |

Question: | Is the seed perennial or will I need to repeat seeding every Spring |

Question: | Will this grass work in myrtle beach sc |

Answer: | Grass seed. It is a thin bladed grass that does well in the shade. Not St Augustine or Bermuda. St Augustine doesn't seed it grows from plugs or sod. Bermuda grows from seed. Frequently Asked Questions
What month is best to apply bare spot repair mix?
The best time to repair bare spots in your lawn will depend on the type of grass and climate in which it is being planted. Most warm-season grasses should be planted in late spring to early summer, while cool-season grasses are better repaired in the fall. However, before repairing your bare spots, we recommend that you ensure that soil is healthy. Patchy spots are sometimes indicative of unhealthy soil. A frequent cause of this can be from pet urination.
How do I fix bare spots caused by dog urine?
If the bare spot was caused by dog urine, water thoroughly prior to planting. Flushing the area will dilute the concentrated salts and help the seed fully establish.
Are One Step Complete products harmful to pets?
We have no reason to believe that our One Step Complete products are harmful to pets. It includes fertilizer so we recommend that the product is watered in and has thoroughly dried before allowing pets to re-enter the area.
Step 1: Prepare
Remove debris, then rake the soil to loosen and smooth the top layer.
Step 2: Apply
Spread seeding mix approximately 1 cup per sq. ft. everywhere thick, beautiful grass is desired.
Step 3: Water
This is the most important step! Keep the soil moist by watering daily (twice a day if you have to) until grass sprouts and reaches about 3" tall.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this grass get too much sun? Some parts of my lawn get full sun while others very little and I'd like to use one type for overseeding |
Answer: | I have a small area (about 12x15) that gets very little sun due to trees and shrubbery. I tried this grass seed twice with no luck. However, to be fair, even other shade grass seeds didn't do well there either so it may work fine somewhere else. |
Question: | Does it contain Kentucky Blue Grass |
Answer: | It's tall fescue & kentucky mostly tall fescue |
Question: | Is this suitable for Seattle washington area |
Answer: | I used it in Anchorage Alaska and though it took a little longer to initially sprout (probably due to temps) it has done really well and is now the most dense patch and green area of of grass in my lawn even though it is in the shade and so far year 1 seems to be winning against the chick-weed. So I plan on spreading some across my entire lawn next year hoping to thicken it up. |
Question: | What type of grass seed is this? Centipede, st augustine |
Answer: | Mixture of perennial rye,fescue. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these seeds need to be covered with soil in order to germinate? Thanks |
Answer: | It is better to be covered with soil |
Question: | Have shady yard in ne ga mountains town of sautee. Will this grass work |
Answer: | In central Wisconsin we planted this in a very shady area where we had mostly moss growing because the grass just could not grow there. It has done very well and filled in everywhere except an area of about a five foot radius directly beneath a large sugar maple tree. The patch there is probably due also to the nutrients and water being consumed by the tree. We were prepared for failure with this but were pleasantly surprised by how well it filled in. We have very extreme temperatures and this has not been a problem. It is also an attractive grass (blade thickness) and germinated well, grew quickly with adequate watering. Took a second summer to fill in to a dense cover after planting in late summer. |
Question: | What is the main difference between this mix vs the "dense shade mix for tall fescue lawns" (model 18341). i'm confused |
Answer: | I think I may have made a mistake and used this. I have cool season grass but I don’t think it is tall fescue. I have more bluegrass than anything. |
Question: | How does it look the second year |
Answer: | Dead, but.... I live in central Florida and this grass came up great and then died during the summer heat. I planted it again in November, again it came up very well, and it looks pretty good now. I'm hoping it will live through March when I sell my house. I know it will not survive the summer heat here in Florida. It is not a southern grass. I have no complaints about the seed. It's just not suited for the deep south. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be used in hydroseeder |
Answer: | Not familiar with a hydro seeder so I cannot answer that. |
Question: | How long it can grow after plant |
Answer: | WwR, it will take up to 21 days for all the grass seeds in the Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair Sun and Shade to germinate. |
Question: | Can this be spread in the fall |
Answer: | What Zone you are in. If you are in the North, probably not but better wait till late Winter or early Spring. However I had bad experience with Scott on this Bermuda Seed package. If you read carefully, the 10 lb package actually has less than one lb of seeds. Small percentage is fertilizer. 99% are mulch which you can purchase it much less price. It also depends how many sq. ft to plan to cover. This 10 lbs package covers less than 200 sq.ft. It also stated gauantee to germinate in any temperature, even exreme heat, it did not happened that way. |
Question: | Does this grass reproduce or spread |
Answer: | No, Tall fescue is a "bunch grass" and does not spread. Over the years a healthy "bunch" will get a bit bigger to help fill in, but not really spread |

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.
Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

Question: | Has anyone planted this seed in Denver, Colorado? When and was it successful |
Answer: | Complete failure. Nothing grew out of this bag. |
Question: | How long did it take to see grass from seed |
Answer: | Put down in bare, shady area with no straw, watered daily, the grass began to come up sporadically in 14-18 days. Put down in the same conditions with straw put down over it, watered daily, grass began to come up well within a few days. No fertilizer. 2 months later, grass still looks great. |
Question: | I ordered Pennington smart seed for sun and shade. I also ordered scotts turf builder fertilizer with weed and feed. can i use them together |
Answer: | No. You should only use starter seed fertilizer with new grass seed. |
Question: | is this seed for fall in new jersey |
Answer: | Yes, this is a good seed, but it takes work. I used Scott’s thicker lawn and added a ton of seed to it. The soil conditioners in it plus more seed, plus dethatching/ roughing up soil and covering with weed free straw on bare areas yielded very good results. With that being said, perrenial rye dies off in summer, and I used for bare areas, and bare again. But I have a 80lb dog that is a force to contend with. I try to add a lot of Kentucky Blue in the fall, as its the best time to grow, and spreads, but seems more susceptible to disease. I am in Monmouth County, NJ, and we had a lot of rain this year, and last fall..fall was great to grow grass, as was the mild tempuratures thru November. I had problems with moss and fungus due to so much rain this spring/summer. I dumped a ton of pertenial rye for erosion control, and it grew far taller than creeping fescues and Kentucky Blue on a weekly basis, then died. I have determined growing grass is a losing battle as every weed seems to thrive and grass dies. I am ready to hardscape front lawn and put artificial turf in backyard and give up. If neighbors have weeds, and/or unkept sidewalk strips of grass turn to weed, it is a yearly event, and after 7 years of regrowing lawn to watch die and become full of weeds...I am certain that grass seed/ maintenance is as painful as buying $60 ink cartridges for a $150 printer, endless expense. Printer just costs money, grass requires hard labor tons of chemicals, and expensive lawn service, none that works with keeping my dog healthy. So, I am killing off grass with lymphoma causing round-up and throwing in the towel and hope that no grass = next year only killing weeds in shrub beds. Artificial turf hopefully with hose and cleaner will be conducive to dog’s bathroom and since my front lawn slopes, I am taking advantage of it and building retaining walls with shrub beds, and then on perimeter adding mulch beds with Skip Laurels and a few more trees and bingo, good-bye grass seed, fertilizers, weed killers, lime, etc. I have had sod installed three times in 7 years, and overseed, etc.. I hate lawns now, I yanked out a lot if lawn and replaced with river rock, looks pretty but trees like mulch better, so rock in backyard so my dog is not running through daily and mulch and will weed front, the weeds are much more hearty than the barriers put down to prevent them. But yes this is a fall or spring season grass. I do not blame seed, I blame the soil, prep work, maintenance, mother nature (insects/weather) and surrounding weeds spreading like a herpes virus for grass failure. Hope you have better luck than me! |

User questions & answers
Question: | can purchase now, store, and plant in spring |
Answer: | I would check he expiration date on the package. If it's "good" until the spring of 2023, I'm certain that it's OK to purchase it now.....especially if it's on sale. By the way, the product is fantastic. The new grass blended in perfectly with the old grass. It's doing super well. I highly recommend the product. |
Question: | Live in central fl. can i plant now? we do get a freeze here and there |
Answer: | I'm positive that you can plant the seeds now. Colder weather will only slow the germination process. It may take a few more days before you see the seedlings. By the way, the product is excellent. I used it to repair my grass because of major new landscaping. It turned out beautifully, completely covering the planted area. Once fully grown, it blended perfectly with the "old" grass. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How well will this seed do in an area with 2-4 hour of sun in north central florida |
Answer: | I planted some around fringe of big tree which got 3 or 4 hours of our Okla hot sun and it survived. In Florida with your humidity and milder temperatures it should do ok if it gets watered and has good root system. Let top dry out two or three days to force roots to go deeper. |
Question: | Is this a perennial grass seed |
Answer: | Yes it is perennial grass that will grow with less sun than K 31 fescue but not quite as durable and drouth resistant. I use it for designed purpose. More dense shade. |
Question: | Will this grass grow in zone 7b |
Answer: | I just planted and too cold still to sprout. I am just hoping it will work as other shade grasses like K-31 Fescue will not grow due to too much shade |
Question: | I live in an area surrounded by oak, beach and popular trees. my soil is very acidic and mossy. will this grass grow in my area or do i need to prep |
Answer: | I be would either till the soil to help root growth or cover seed with bags of mulch, soil, cotton seed hulls, etc. you probably need to haul in fresh new soil and cover 2 to 3 inches deep. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be good in Montana |
Answer: | Should be good. Seeding would be about now. It took 14 days to germinate which means it requires you to water lightly that entire time. Do not use in clay soil. |
Question: | What is sell by date on pennington shade and sun grass seed |
Answer: | Doin't remember but grass seed i can still use after 2 years then it gets iffy. |
Question: | Is the purple dust on the seed fertilizer? Just wondered if it would rust metal if left on |
Answer: | I ordered, didn't do enough so ordered again. Tiny patches of grass the rest is dried seeds laying on top of yard. I will not be buying ever again, |
Question: | What type of grass is this |
Answer: | I'm not sure what type of grass that it is, but I would not recommend buying it. It is not growing at all and we have watered and done everything to try and get it growing to no avail. |
