13 best soil test meters
Soil test meters, also known as soil test kits or soil testing hand tools, are devices used by gardeners and agricultural professionals to assess the quality and composition of soil in a specific area. These tools are essential for understanding the nutrient levels, pH balance, and moisture content of the soil, which are crucial factors for successful gardening and crop cultivation. Here are some key aspects of soil test meters:
Nutrient Analysis: Soil test meters can measure the levels of essential nutrients in the soil, such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). This information helps gardeners determine which fertilizers or soil amendments are needed to optimize plant growth.
pH Measurement: pH is a measure of soil acidity or alkalinity. Soil test meters can provide pH readings, indicating whether the soil is too acidic or alkaline for specific plants. Most plants prefer a pH level within a certain range, so adjusting soil pH can improve plant health and growth.
Moisture Content: Some soil test meters are equipped with sensors to measure soil moisture levels. This information is valuable for determining when and how much to water plants, ensuring that they receive the right amount of moisture.
Easy to Use: Soil test meters are designed to be user-friendly, with simple instructions for taking accurate readings. Many models are portable and can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings.
Cost-Effective: Using soil test meters can help gardeners save money by preventing over-fertilization or excessive watering, which can be detrimental to plants and wasteful of resources.
Environmental Benefits: Proper soil testing and adjustment can lead to more sustainable gardening practices by reducing the use of chemicals and conserving water.
Types of Soil Test Meters: There are various types of soil test meters available, ranging from simple handheld devices to digital meters with advanced features. Some soil test kits include multiple tools for comprehensive soil analysis.
Interpreting Results: Once the readings are obtained, gardeners can interpret the results and make informed decisions about soil amendments and plant care practices. Recommendations for corrective actions are often provided with soil test kits.
In summary, soil test meters, including soil test kits and hand tools, are essential tools for anyone involved in gardening, lawn care, or agriculture. They provide valuable insights into soil quality, allowing gardeners and farmers to optimize growing conditions for plants and crops, ultimately leading to healthier and more productive gardens and landscapes.

User questions & answers
Question: | what does "plug and read" mean? I'm wondering if there are no batteries, does this have to be plugged in, does it charge from an outlet |
Answer: | Hi, After dipping your test strip into the soil/water mix the test strip pads should match one of the vertical columns on the color chart which will correspond to a given pH number. If you are have trouble interpreting the results we are glad to take a look at a picture. You can reach us using the contact information on the box that the test strips came in or through the Amazon messaging system. We do this all the time for customers. We also have example test pictures and a troubleshooting guide on our support site listed on the booklet and label. Please know that we stand behind our products so rest assured we will make sure you are satisfied or we will refund your purchase. Best, Angus |
Question: | Soil ph is reading an 8 on every soil does anyone have issues with the soil ph. i even tried in a soil that's ph is |
Answer: | The Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. The strips use reagents that react to the presence of dissolved solids/minerals found in soils. |
Question: | My meter just came in and it is showing wildly different readings when I test the same exact spot |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for your question. The Garden Tutor pH test strips are designed to help you zero in on your soil's pH level. So if you are getting truly inconsistent readings, it could be that there are contaminants in your soil that are skewing the results. You should also double-check your results and make sure you are following the test instructions and interpreting your results correctly. The goal is to find the column on the color chart that best matches the colors on the pH strip from top to bottom. This can take a little work. If you think you are getting inconsistent results or want help with interpretation, please reach out to us from our Amazon seller profile and click "Ask a question" We can respond with details on how we can help interpret your results. Please know that we always stand behind our products, so if you are not satisfied, we will make sure you get a full refund Best, Angus |
Question: | Can you use this also to check the ph in water before you water your plants or just soil |
Answer: | Thank you for your excellent question. The pH of the water can affect your results. In areas that have excessively hard water (water with lots of minerals in it), the pH of the water will be strongly alkaline (pH of 8.5 and higher), and this can impact the reading you will get from your Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips. The impact is typically about .5 of a point for pH, but the drift can be up to 1 point. For most gardeners getting a pH reading within .5 of a point is sufficient. Most municipal tap water has a pH of 6.5 to 8.5, so using tap water will be OK but may cause your reading to be off about .5 of a point. If you want to get the best reading possible from your test strips, it's a good idea to use fresh unopened distilled water. You can check the manufacturing date on the unopened distilled water container, and if it is under 30 days old, it should be about a 7.0 pH. When using distilled water, you can be assured that you will be getting the most accurate soil pH reading possible. One of the main reasons distilled water is used for soil pH testing is that it has a low "buffer capacity" and will not meaningfully impact the actual pH reading of a soil sample. It is important to note that the Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. If you have additional questions, please let us know. We are glad to help. Angus Junkin Garden Tutor |

User questions & answers
Question: | Having problems with the probe. Known very acidic soil and very basic soil mixtures are not swaying the pH function more that 1 pH unit |
Answer: | No order from web site for luster leaf |
Question: | does the soil have to be wet to measure ph |
Answer: | If you go to the lusterleaf.com home page and click on "products," at the right side there is a light green square that brings up a capsule order form. The order form is the same whether you bring up the 1601 soil test kit, the 1609CS, or the 1605, so my guess is that the same capsules are used for all three, so the answer to your question would be, "Yes." But if you want an definite answer, you'll probably have to contact Lusterleaf. Contact information is available on the home page or at the bottom of the capsule order form.. |
Question: | How long are probes |
Answer: | I didn’t get good results from this test because our soil is so full of clay that the orange color skewed our results. |
Question: | Are the probes supposed to come out of the casing while using |
Answer: | The test results are all based on parts per million. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What can I do once the meter rusted |
Answer: | You can use it to measure moisture in the ground or pots, etc. It has a 7" probe which allows measuring moisture in large pots. Sticking your finger in the ground (my index finger is only about 2 2/5" long) will only measure surface dryness , while there may be quite a bit of moisture deeper. Don't over-water based on lack of surface moisture. My desert plants (Yuma AZ) are sensitive to over-watering. Measure the moisture in the root area, I highly recommend this handy instrument. |
Question: | Can this soil tester be used in water |
Answer: | Yes, it is, but we recommend inserting the probes into the soil 4 inches or deeper (two-thirds of the pole) and keep the whole plastic dial do not touch the soil to avoid destroying electrode. |
Question: | Is it OK to leave this water meter in the soil for long periods of time? Or will that ruin it |
Answer: | Step 1. To measure moisture/light /PH of the soil, first insert a probe into the soil at a depth of 2/3 (4-6 inches). Step 2. Open the button on the soil tester and select the ""MOIST/LIGHT/PH"". Step 3. Wait about 10 seconds before reading the data Step 4. Remove the probe from the soil and wipe the electrode after use. |
Question: | Is the pH measurement accurate |
Answer: | You'd better not do this. You put it outside for a long time so it's easy to rust. Do not leave the meter in the soil for a long time and wipe and clean the probe after each use. |

User questions & answers
Question: | After testing, all of the 4 pads on one test strip are different colors and ph. how do i know what the ph level is |
Answer: | I have a stucco home and found it to be very effective for removal of dirt, grime, and algae. If the stucco paint is stained, then obviously, it won't help that. I used it on gutters, stucco walls, window frames, deck, and outdoor furniture with great results. |
Question: | Can you also use this to test water |
Answer: | Hello! Wet & Forget will only remove organic growths such as moss, mold, mildew or algae. It will not remove mineral deposits. If you have further questions feel free to contact us 888-727-8524. The Wet & Forget Team |
Question: | Each color on the strip matched a different pH. The blue matched up with 6.0, the yellow with 8.0, the green with 5.5 etc. How to interpret |
Answer: | No. My mold is still there after using for many months. This product is "Septic Safe" (which hard to find) so no bleach etc. |
Question: | Could the ph of the water used have an affect the results? If so, how would you correct it |
Answer: | I used it on brick and in one day the moss was gone and has not returned. For you I would try it on a piece of plastic like a baggie first seems save to me. |
Product features
Most plants prefer a pH of 6.5
Soil pH determines its acidity (sourness) or alkalinity (sweetness). For gardening, most plants prefer a soil pH between 6 and 7 with 6.5 being your target soil pH.
Maintaining proper soil pH prevents "nutrient lockout"
If soil pH is too extreme for plants, it creates an unhealthy environment by limiting the nourishment that is available to the plants.
Maintaining proper soil pH helps promote growth and vigor
Plants under stress are much more prone to poor health. Keeping pH at the proper level for the plants in your garden is one way to help.
Step 1: Collect a representative soil sample
Using a garden trowel or spade, dig a small hole (about 6 inches deep) and slice a sample from the edge of the hole as if you were cutting a thin slice of cake. Put this sample in a bucket or large container. Repeat this process a few times around your garden site. Mix soil samples thoroughly and remove any stones, grass, etc.
Step 2: Add soil to a cup or testing jar
Using a tablespoon put 8 level tablespoons (4 ounces) of the mixed soil into a clean plastic cup or testing jar and thoroughly mix with 8 level tablespoons (4 ounces) of water for 30 seconds.
Step 3: Dip strip into solution
For best results, let the soil/water solution sit for 20 minutes before testing. Briefly mix solution one more time and wait 10 seconds for the soil to settle a bit and then dip one pH test strip into the solution. Hold the strip in the solution for 3 seconds.
Step 4: Match color pads to color chart
Remove the pH test strip and shake it vigorously to remove any dirt on the pads. Depending on soil pH, some or all the color pads will change color. Match the resulting color(s) with the color chart that accompanied the pH test strips to determine your soil pH. If you are having difficulty choosing a pH, use our simplified chart to zero in on your soil pH.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work well? I'd like to buy one for the light meter |
Answer: | I purchased mine for testing the spoil pH and watering needs and they both seem to be very accurate. I do not know how accurate it is for light testing. I do not know what your application is for, but if it's to see how much light is present for growing a garden, then you need a minimum of 6 hrs of sunlight a day, preferably 8. Of course it also depends on what you are trying to grow, some plants need much more than others. |
Question: | If my plant falls under the 0-3 red category, does that mean I only water it when the meter indicates that’s where the soil is at |
Answer: | Hi! I have a moisture meter and its saving me from over watering which I am prone to do. Some plants like to be moist and some are drought resistant and can tolerate a lack of water and others like flowers need to be water more often because they wither quickly. if you have soil that is a mixture of clay then the clay will hold moisture and the plant won't need water as often. You can go on line and there is a wealth of information including how to water and care for any plant you have. I also sent a soil sample off to the North Carolina Dept of Agriculture so they could tell me about fertilizer. Good luck. Its all on line. |
Question: | Do you always have to wait 10 minutes before checking a reading, and when you toggle to a different reading does the 10 min start over |
Answer: | Yes, you always have to wait 10 minutes before checking the readings. When you switch to a different reading, start again in 10 minutes. |
Question: | I can't get the pH to work, but light and moister do work. What am I doing wrong |
Answer: | Since soil most often is in/close to neutral state (with pH value of 7), when you use it to test the pH value of soil, it is highly likely that you find the needle in display window stay still (because the default pH value is set at somewhere between 7 and 8) . The needle will not swing substantially unless the meter in soil with strong acidity or alkalinity. Customers sometimes are misled by this appearance and hence regard the tester as a defective unit by mistake. Here are the steps of How To Use this soil meter: Step 1: Gently wiped the probes all the way up and down with dry cloth a few times before use Step 2: Push the switch to MOIST or PH or LIGHT position Step 3: Stick the probes into the soil 4-6 inches (2/3 of the probes) or more deep Step 4: Adjust the position of the probe until the pointer on the dial swing slightly Step 5: Note moisture/pH/light level in the dial Step 6: Remove probes from soil and wipe clean with dry cloth after each use Tips: This soil meter is designed to measure moisture and ph level of soil, so it CAN ONLY be used in soil, it CANNOT be used to test any liquids, such as pure water, lemon juice, vinegar and so on, or the probes may be damaged. |
