Answer:	The needle moves according to how much 'electric current' flows through the metal wand. Essentially, water is the conductive substance. If the soil is dry, no ions can pass anywhere and the needle will not move, so it is dry. The more water, the easier for ions to pass and that makes the meter get its' power. This is more than adequate accuracy for plants. If this were ultracritical and you needed a specific readout of the percentage of water, etc. this isn't the unit. For everything else, it is a winner.
