In areas that have excessively hard water (water with lots of minerals in it), the pH of the water will be strongly alkaline (pH of 8.5 and higher), and this can impact the reading you will get from your Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips. The impact is typically about .5 of a point for pH, but the drift can be up to 1 point. For most gardeners getting a pH reading within .5 of a point is sufficient. Most municipal tap water has a pH of 6.5 to 8.5, so using tap water will be OK but may cause your reading to be off about .5 of a point. If you want to get the best reading possible from your test strips, it's a good idea to use fresh unopened distilled water. You can check the manufacturing date on the unopened distilled water container, and if it is under 30 days old, it should be about a 7.0 pH. When using distilled water, you can be assured that you will be getting the most accurate soil pH reading possible. One of the main reasons distilled water is used for soil pH testing is that it has a low "buffer capacity" and will not meaningfully impact the actual pH reading of a soil sample. Kindly NOTE:
1. The pH function of this soil tester can not be applied to test pH value of any other liquid.
2. Since soil most often is in/close to neutral state (with pH value of 7), it is highly likely that you find the needle in display window stay still (because the default pH value is set at somewhere between 7 and 8) when you use it to test the pH value of soil. Customers sometimes are misled by this appearance and hence regard the tester as a defective unit by mistake.
How to Use:
Step 1: Switch to moisture/pH/light position according to demand.
Step 2: Insert the probe into the soil about 2-4 inches.
Step 3: Check moisture/pH/light level in the dial after 10 minutes.
Step 4: Remove probe from soil and wipe clean after each use.
Kindly Note:
1. Do not force it into very hard soil or touch hard objects since it will be easy to damage the probe.
2. Do not use it to test pure water or other liquids. It can only be used to measure soil.
3. Do not leave the meter in the soil for a long time.
4. Please wipe and clean the probe after each use.
5. If the soil is too dry the indicator will not move, and water it before testing.

If Your Soil Test Kit does not work, please try doing the following:
Question A: How to get reliable and accurate data?
Answer: You can place the probe into soil at different locations in the same pot or garden area and it may record slightly different readings, say maybe 6 at one spot and 6.5 at another.
Gently insert it into the soil (without a hammer please) and then wipe off the steel probe with a cloth or even your hand, it seems to work perfectly. And, as the directions state, don't insert it into a cup of water to test it. If you want to test it for accuracy, insert the probe into a bundle of dry peat moss or potting soil, take the recording, and then add various amounts of water to the soil and retest. Record the results you get and then you will have a guide as to what it means when the probe registers say, "5 - moderate moisture", or "9 - very wet", or "2 - very dry".
Question B: Why you need a soil kit?
Answer: In order to promise your plants don't dry out on a schedule like that all year round, you need a soil tester. To grow a healthy plant, it depends on its environment, how much light it's getting, how hot and wet its surrounding is, what kind of soil and pot it's in.
I started using this in my other houseplants and there has been a noticeable difference in how my plants look after a short time of use. It has helped me determine a better watering schedule for all my plants, and that some of my pots were not draining. If you are new to houseplants, or you have some houseplants that you are having trouble with, I would definitely recommend this product.
