User questions & answers
Question: | Would this meter work for checking the ph of compost |
Answer: | We advise 3 month or more.you don't have to calibrate it frequently. This refractometer is equipped with ATC automatic temperature compensation system, once calibrated, the change of working temperature within +/-30℃ wouldn't effect the accuracy of reading result.you can calibrate it more if you want to make sure the best accuracy. And the calibration is not complicated at all. Just need a few drops of distilled water and adjust the result to "0", you'll finish the calibration in minutes by following the instruction |
Question: | What the white button on the side of the tester is for? Why does face of the meter sayonly PH and nothing about moisture |
Answer: | Yes, it screws in and out to adjust the focus. |
Question: | So if the soil has to be very wet to test Ph, do you just test the moisture first and THEN test the Ph? Is it really good for testing both |
Answer: | Yes you can, the SG is the same in all. Just remember that when you check your final gravity that you use a Hydrometer as therefractometer is not accurate with achol present. |
Question: | Independent of the manufacturer's claim, how accurate is the unit? More importantly, what is your basis for your view as to its accuracy |
Answer: | At the beginning of your brew day. I've had the meter for 2 years, and though I check it every time I start, I have only had to recalibrate it about 3x. It is a rock solid instrument and a pleasure to use. You will find yourself checking gravity more often as it is so easy and efficient. Don't forget you will need to use a calculation tool (ie: Brewersfriend.com) to account for the alcohol in solution when doing a final gravity reading with it. |

A ph. of 7.0 is neutral, values below 7.0 are acid, and those above are alkaline. The lower the ph. the more acid is the soil. The higher the ph., the more alkaline. The ph. values of some common items are: Pure water, 7.0: Lemon juice, 2.2 to 2.4, orange juice, 3.4 to 4.0, fresh milk, 6.3 to 6.6, mild soap solution, 8.5 to 10.0, most Ontario soils, 4.5 to 8.0. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with the leather case |
Answer: | This is primarily used for measuring the ABV of Distilled spirits. If you were checking the alcohol content before any other additives, it may work for what you need. Once you start adding other ingredients, it may distort your results. Also, dark colored liquids can distort your results as well. Even if you used a float proofing hydrometer, you would need to check alcohol content before adding other ingredients. Thickening agents will distort results. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what does "plug and read" mean? I'm wondering if there are no batteries, does this have to be plugged in, does it charge from an outlet |
Answer: | Hi, After dipping your test strip into the soil/water mix the test strip pads should match one of the vertical columns on the color chart which will correspond to a given pH number. If you are have trouble interpreting the results we are glad to take a look at a picture. You can reach us using the contact information on the box that the test strips came in or through the Amazon messaging system. We do this all the time for customers. We also have example test pictures and a troubleshooting guide on our support site listed on the booklet and label. Please know that we stand behind our products so rest assured we will make sure you are satisfied or we will refund your purchase. Best, Angus |
Question: | Soil ph is reading an 8 on every soil does anyone have issues with the soil ph. i even tried in a soil that's ph is |
Answer: | The Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. The strips use reagents that react to the presence of dissolved solids/minerals found in soils. |
Question: | My meter just came in and it is showing wildly different readings when I test the same exact spot |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for your question. The Garden Tutor pH test strips are designed to help you zero in on your soil's pH level. So if you are getting truly inconsistent readings, it could be that there are contaminants in your soil that are skewing the results. You should also double-check your results and make sure you are following the test instructions and interpreting your results correctly. The goal is to find the column on the color chart that best matches the colors on the pH strip from top to bottom. This can take a little work. If you think you are getting inconsistent results or want help with interpretation, please reach out to us from our Amazon seller profile and click "Ask a question" We can respond with details on how we can help interpret your results. Please know that we always stand behind our products, so if you are not satisfied, we will make sure you get a full refund Best, Angus |
Question: | Can you use this also to check the ph in water before you water your plants or just soil |
Answer: | Thank you for your excellent question. The pH of the water can affect your results. In areas that have excessively hard water (water with lots of minerals in it), the pH of the water will be strongly alkaline (pH of 8.5 and higher), and this can impact the reading you will get from your Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips. The impact is typically about .5 of a point for pH, but the drift can be up to 1 point. For most gardeners getting a pH reading within .5 of a point is sufficient. Most municipal tap water has a pH of 6.5 to 8.5, so using tap water will be OK but may cause your reading to be off about .5 of a point. If you want to get the best reading possible from your test strips, it's a good idea to use fresh unopened distilled water. You can check the manufacturing date on the unopened distilled water container, and if it is under 30 days old, it should be about a 7.0 pH. When using distilled water, you can be assured that you will be getting the most accurate soil pH reading possible. One of the main reasons distilled water is used for soil pH testing is that it has a low "buffer capacity" and will not meaningfully impact the actual pH reading of a soil sample. It is important to note that the Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. If you have additional questions, please let us know. We are glad to help. Angus Junkin Garden Tutor |
