User questions & answers
Question: | Who manufactures the meter |
Answer: | The name listed on the case, and the meter itself, is "Dr. Meter", and it is titled as "Dr. Meter Digital Illluminanc...B, O-200,000 Lux Luxmeter" model LX1330B. It shows a URL of "http.//www.drmeter.com". It was mfg. in China, but a USA contact is "Dr. Meter, 30075 Ahern Ave., Union City, Cal., 94587, w/ a phone number of #510-477-0249, & Fax as #510-477-0749. |
Question: | Can this measure LED grow light |
Answer: | Tl;dr is at the bottom because I have a lot of details. It can, but it is not recommended. Lux meters like this are designed to measure the intensity of visible light, which generally assumes you are measuring white light perceived by humans. What matters for plants (so what matters for your grow light) is Photosynthetic Active Radiation, PAR. PAR is a measurement of how many light particles, or photons, pass by a given point. This means that PAR will also get smaller the further you move from the light because it has dispersed more. Because PAR is much more difficult to measure than ambient light, it is much more expensive, generally in the $300-500 range. I would recommend either checking if your grow light has documentation on it's output in PAR, or contacting the manufacturer to ask. If they do not have this information, then follow their guidelines on how far to place the light relative to your plants. Tl;dr: Lux is not a good measurement for LED grow lights. See if you can find information about the light's output measured in PAR. Source: I designed an LED Grow Light and had to do all this research to figure out what to measure for it. |
Question: | Yes this a goodlight meter for photographers |
Answer: | I would not use it for photography. There are many better meters to use for that purpose. This meter is made for measuring foot candles and such and is useful for comparative light levels. Gossen or other photo meters would do better and be directly viewable with the scales on such a meter. |
Question: | I want to measure light pollution from out door lighting. Need accuracy below 1 lux eg (0.1 to 1 lux |
Answer: | From the instruction manual:Light-measuring levels ranging from 0.1 lux to 200,000 lux with auto zeroing and corrected for luminous efficiency function (manually calculated for non-standard light sources).Accuracy is described as: +- 3%+10dgt with a repeatability within 2%.ChuckJ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this mesure the out put from a flsahlight ? As in # of lumens |
Answer: | I have learned that there is now hand held equipment to measure lumens. I understand that the factory must use special scientific equipment to determine output. |
Question: | Is this the kind of meter where you put in the ISO and can get an aperture setting recommendation, or is it just telling you lux |
Answer: | You can convert Lux to Camera Settings for ISO 100 using this spreadsheet: http://accessz.com/tools/Lux-to-Camera-Settings.xlsx |
Question: | Will it work on ranges 0.0 to 1 lux |
Answer: | I have the operation manual that came with it. It claims resolution of 1 lux and Accuracy in range of ≤10,000Lux:±4%rdg±0.5f.s. In the manual it actually also says that the range is 1-50,000Lux, so it seems from this info that even if some numbers are being shown, you could not believe their accuracy. Might be good for relative measurements, it all depends what you want to use it for and if you are interested in accurate or comparative measurements. |
Question: | I want to see how many lumens of light is in my garage, will this tool tell me exactly how many lumens are present?: IE: 24,000 lumens ...etc |
Answer: | No. Lux is not lumens. Lux is the measure of light intensity, lumens is amount of light production. Its like lux is water pressure in a pipe, whereas lumens is flow rate in the pipe. You can convert though, lux is lumens per sq meter. If you know how much sq meters is your room (all 6 sides) you can do the math to convert lux to lumen. If you arent good with metric, use familiar units and do the conversion last. |

User questions & answers
Question: | May I fix sensor at covered struct for measuring every day? It will be exposed to sun light every day |
Answer: | That makes no sense to me, why would anyone what to fix this to a structure at all times? One it’s not waterproof, second the sensor would get ruin, third the battery wouldn’t last that long and would cut off. I would say no don’t mount this to anything, it’s meant to be used by hand at the moment. |
Question: | I’m trying to perform a successive measurement log but it shuts off after two minutes. How do I keep the meter on |
Answer: | Yes, this is a real PAR meter. In LOG mode it shuts off every two minutes to save electricity, if you perform a successive measurement do not use in LOG mode. |
Question: | Can i use this to measure par underwater (sensor only) in my aquarium |
Answer: | It is not designed for that, so it is very doubtful. Obviously, if you ruined the sensor by submerging it, this would void the warranty. |
Question: | Is this a real par meter, or is it a modified lux meter with some filters and software that interpolates the data? sensor looks like a lux sensor |
Answer: | It's a real PAR meter. Pretty accurate too. But has a serious flaw in build quality that will likely force you to open it up and fix it. Just happened to mine after 6 months of use. |

Question: | What's the correct zone for emerald green and green giant arborvitae? That variety was not listed on the back of the packaging |
Answer: | We have not studied that plant variety so you may want to check with the nursery or other source about it. One page of information that came up right away when we Googled it read: Most arborvitaes grow happily in soil with a pH ranging from acidic to moderately alkaline, and "Green Giant" is no exception. Its parent Japanese arborvitae (USDA zones 5 though 7) prefers neutral to alkaline loam; that translates to a pH of about 7 or above. |
Question: | I turn the switch to Moist, I put it in 3/4 inch to 1 inch of water and the results were still in the lower green area of 4 to 6, that's wet |
Answer: | Moisture testing must be performed in soil/substrate and will not work if inserted directly in water. Only the pH function can be tested in directly in water. |
Question: | what meassurement of light does this use |
Answer: | I don't know that off hand. Have you read the package ? |
