10 best pick axes

A pickaxe, often referred to as a pick, is a versatile hand tool commonly used in gardening, lawn care, landscaping, and various outdoor activities. It consists of a handle, typically made of wood or fiberglass, and a head with a pointed end on one side and a chisel-like blade on the other.

Here are the key aspects and uses of a pickaxe:

  1. Design and Components:

    • The head of a pickaxe typically consists of a pick, which is a pointed tool designed for breaking up hard surfaces such as soil, rocks, or concrete, and a mattock, which has a chisel-like blade for digging or cutting through roots and other materials.
    • The pick and mattock are mounted on opposite ends of the head, providing versatility in various tasks.
  2. Gardening and Soil Preparation:

    • In gardening and lawn care, a pickaxe is commonly used for breaking up compacted soil, removing rocks and roots, and preparing the ground for planting.
    • The pointed end of the pick is effective in loosening soil and breaking clumps, allowing for better aeration and water absorption.
  3. Landscaping and Construction:

    • Pickaxes are also employed in landscaping and construction to break through hard surfaces like concrete, asphalt, or rocky terrain.
    • The pointed end is valuable for digging and creating holes for fence posts, plants, or other structures.
  4. Durability and Materials:

    • The handle of a pickaxe is typically made from durable materials like wood or fiberglass to provide a sturdy grip and withstand the forces involved during use.
    • The head is often constructed from high-quality steel to ensure strength and longevity.
  5. Usage Techniques:

    • When using a pickaxe, proper technique is crucial to maximize efficiency and minimize physical strain. This involves a swinging motion using both hands, with the pick end striking the surface being worked on.
  6. Safety Considerations:

    • Users should wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves, safety glasses, and sturdy footwear, to protect against potential injuries or accidents.

Pickaxes are essential tools for anyone involved in gardening, lawn care, landscaping, or outdoor construction projects. Their versatility in breaking up hard materials and preparing surfaces makes them a valuable asset for maintaining and enhancing outdoor spaces.

User questions & answers

Question: After you slide the head on, do you need to hammer it on to secure it? how do you secure it on
Answer: Hi, .You don't need a hammer or any other tool. If you assemble the head to its place it will stay there
Question: How do I secure the head to the handle properly so it is on tight? Thank you
Answer: Slide the head onto the handle, then strike the top of the handle down on a sidewalk or other paved surface to seat the head firmly on the handle.
Question: After you slide the head on, do you need to hammer it on to secure it? how do you secure it on
Answer: Hold the black part of the handle with the head side down, then forcefully slam the exposed end on the ground. The weight of the head and the force of slamming it down will force the head to friction fit. Every once in a while repeat to make sure it's secured. Hope this makes sense.
Question: Never got assembly instructions. Help
Answer: Its pretty straightforward... Just slide the pick through the handle. I dont know whats the confusion here...

User questions & answers

Question: does it come assembled
Answer: it comes ready to go. fully assembled
Question: How wide is the head
Answer: The head is about 18 inches long and the wide end is about 3 inches wide.
Question: How do I replace the handle? I cannot seem to get the head off the old handle
Answer: Don't throw it out like someone suggested! Cut the protective sleeve off. Then hold it the tool up vertically so the handle is on concrete or a flat rock. Lift it up a few inches and then smack the handle down on the hard surface. Keep going and it should come loose. Unless, of course, they haven't epoxied the thing. Another options is to saw the handle right up against the head. Then put it across a couple bricks and then use a heavy hammer and a metal bar to smack the fresh cut end. If that doesn't work, drill the wood out as much as you can and eventually it will get loose enough to remove the head. This should do it even if it is epoxied.
Question: country of origin
Answer: Wooden handle is American hardwood. Head is from Mexico.

User questions & answers

Question: How does this thing do at chopping out roots? Digging out access hole under house and not enough room for grubbing hoe
Answer: It works well for its size. It’s not heavy, so most of the force comes from your wrist. A large root would take some time to remove. I purchased this so I could dig roots out with one hand while on my knees.
Question: Can it break rock
Answer: I would get a full size pick axe for that. This one is small like a hatchet

User questions & answers

Question: How heavy is it? Comparable to a 2.5 lb, or 5 lb mattock
Answer: Hi, we use this for everything. Most fossils are in some type of limestone or shale. This works very well to clear debris and get into the non exposed layers. We use it for fossil and rock hunting.
Question: Whats the difference between this one, and the hundred dollar one
Answer: one very solid piece.
Question: New at fossil-hunting - in addition to this hammer, should I consider a smaller Estwing (maybe 13 oz.) for finer work? Thanks
Answer: Yes, the Gfeller Hammer Holster will fit. You might want to get the holster for larger diameter handles just to make it easier but either will fit.I believer we're currently out of stock on Gfeller holsters. You may find a source here on Amazon or you could go directly to the Gfeller and make the purchase.-dana
Question: Is it a solid piece of steel? Or a two piece
Answer: The elongate side is a pointed tip. The short side is flat.
