11 best electric fence chargers

Electric fence chargers, also known as energizers or fencers, play a crucial role in electric fencing systems used in farm ranches and gardens. These chargers are responsible for generating and delivering electric pulses to the fence wires, creating an electrified barrier to contain livestock, protect crops, or deter unwanted animals.

Key features and considerations regarding electric fence chargers include:

  1. Power Source:

    • Electric fence chargers can be powered by mains electricity, battery, or solar energy. Mains-powered chargers are common in areas with reliable electricity, while battery and solar-powered chargers offer flexibility in remote locations.
  2. Output Voltage:

    • The output voltage of the charger determines the strength of the electric shock delivered to the fence. It's important to select a charger with an output voltage suitable for the type of animals you're containing or deterring.
  3. Type of Fence:

    • Different chargers are designed for specific types of fences, such as polytape, polywire, or high-tensile wire. Ensure compatibility between the charger and the type of fence you plan to install.
  4. Distance Coverage:

    • Chargers come with a maximum distance coverage rating, indicating how far the electric pulse can travel along the fence. Consider the size of the area you need to secure and choose a charger that provides adequate coverage.
  5. Weather Resistance:

    • Since electric fence chargers are often installed outdoors, it's crucial to select a model that is weather-resistant. Some chargers are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, ensuring consistent performance in rain, snow, or intense sunlight.
  6. Pulse Rate:

    • The pulse rate refers to how often the charger sends electric pulses down the fence. The pulse rate can vary, and the choice may depend on the specific application. Some chargers offer variable pulse rates to suit different needs.
  7. Additional Features:

    • Some chargers come with additional features such as low-impedance technology for better performance, surge protection to safeguard against lightning strikes, and power-saving modes for efficient energy use.
  8. Installation and Maintenance:

    • Consider the ease of installation and maintenance. Chargers should be installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines, and routine checks should be performed to ensure proper functioning.
  9. Regulations and Standards:

    • Be aware of any local regulations or standards regarding electric fencing. Some regions may have specific requirements regarding the strength of the electric charge or the use of certain materials.
  10. Brand Reputation:

    • Choose chargers from reputable brands with a history of producing reliable and durable electric fencing equipment. Reading reviews and seeking recommendations from other farmers or gardeners can be helpful.

By carefully considering these factors, you can select the most appropriate electric fence charger for your specific needs in farm ranching or garden protection.

User questions & answers

Question: Can 3 small wire loops be used to protect separate small areas within an acre? Can pulse and continuous be used
Answer: I don't see why not
Question: The instructions say "Installation must be indoor/dry location". Is this the case? Thank you
Answer: I live in Florida so there is a lot rain. I set my unit up in my covered patio so it isn't directly in the elements. If you don't have a covered patio then you can put this in a water resistant box, NEMA 4 or IP65 box. Im sure Amazon has these enclosures. The fence energizer look like it is sealed very well but I wouldn't go against the manufacturer recommendations. Keep it dry.
Question: Does the unit have an on off switch
Answer: No, there is no on/off switch. Plug it in and it's "live."
Question: how painful is it? worried about visitors accidentally touching it
Answer: It's not extremely painful but I wouldn't play with it. My adult son thought he would be funny and grabbed it right after I installed it... Obviously we got a good laugh out of it. This last weekend as I was mowing the lawn, I had work gloves and thought I would lift it up to mow along the fence line... It zapped me through my glove. I then ran into it with my bare leg turning away from it. It does let you know it is there!

User questions & answers

Question: What are the dementions on the box
Answer: The box is 5" wide at the base, 6" in height and 2 3/4 thick. The box tapers a bit at the top. Jim
Question: Will this unit electrify a normal sized mailbox
Answer: Yes, this unit is strong enough to electrify a normal sized mailbox. I have never seen it done but this charger can do it if it is set up correctly.
Question: I have two chihuahuas that I am trying to keep away from a section of my yard. Is this too much voltage
Answer: I have this although I have not used it yet due to snow. It is similar to the Hartz model in voltage. It is not a steady current. I have 4 small dogs 7-10 pounds. All touched the line they yelped. I held the line and it surely tingles didn't hurt. One however did get stuck on it however still not sure and it left a wound not bad but a mark nonetheless. They did learn to stay away from it after three or so zaps. It is not strong like for large animals but I would supervise your dogs to be certain nothing bad happens until they learn to keep away.
Question: Will it work for a Trump yard sign
Answer: I used a much more powerful unit and it worked perfectly. Our sign is the only one still in our neighborhood.

User questions & answers

Question: Would you please be willing to clarify the warranty? The manufacturer states 2 years. Your description says 1. Thank you
Answer: The one I purchased in 2013 had a 1 year warranty. It had to be returned for service twice during the warranty period.. The second time they sent me a new one. So far that one has worked fine. It was painful to be without the fence charger for weeks during each failure though. Hopefully it was just a bad initial unit because it is a great charger and mine was still producing a significant charge even after deer had broken several of the wires.
Question: Will this charger work for horses and can i use a poly wire with it
Answer: Mine works for bears so I would assume horses would be impressed by this charger. I have had no experience with poly wire but I would think that their website can answer.
Question: How many jolts does it put out
Answer: I use the fencer to keep critters out of the garden. I run one wire about 3 feet above the ground that is about 500 feet long, The meter reads 15.6 kilovolts. The other wire is 6 inches above the ground with all vegetation below that wire removed. This wire is for raccoon and woodchuck control. When I connect the two wires together, the meter shows 14.5 kilovolts but I know the voltage on the lower wire is much less as indicated by the spark length when shorting the lower wire to ground. This is likely due to capacitance between the lower wire and ground bleeding off the high frequency component of the pulses. The longer the wire and/or lower the wire the greater the drop in voltage along the wire regardless of the fencer make and model. Regardless, garden raids have gone from about one per night to zero. I've got about 60 years experience with electric fencers and this is the best I've ever seen.
Question: will this work for a very short fence? I am not using it for the farm. I am using it for the house so no animal will get near the house
Answer: I agree with all previous answers. It should work just fine, although it may well be overkill, and it will definitely give you a jolt if you touch it. Be aware of laws in your area pertaining to the use of such fencing. Also, you will want to make sure you have it grounded properly. I have four ground rods attached to mine. Our fence keeps the moose and bears away. Using an electric fence tester, I will pick up the electrical field before I even touch the fence so do not set a metal tool or pail near it. I had my horses' 70 gallon Rubbermade water tank too close to the fence. The horses had stopped drinking. I touched the water and got zapped. The Energizer 5 is a very powerful fencer.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need any additional hardware to attach it to a wood fence post
Answer: You need 2 large headed wood screws, that most Hardware Stores have. The screw holes are about 2 1/2" apart so it needs to be mounted on a 6" post. It would be best to fasten a piece of 2x4 like a cross on the post, then mount the charger on it.
Question: that weight is approximately team
Answer: If your asking "the weight of the charger", it's around twenty five pounds. The reason the charger can only be shipped by ground is because it has a battery. Batteries cannot be shipped airfreight.
Question: Does this come with a battery? If not, what kind do I get
Answer: It does come with a battery. You should plan to have it in the sun for a couple days without turning it on to get battery to full charge.
Question: What is the joule output
Answer: According to my meter it's about .75 joules, not quite 1 joule, my ground isn't what it should be.

Product description

With the Zareba 5 Mile Solar Low Impedance Fence Charger your fence can have power from anywhere. Question: Would this jolt a bear? Am looking for something to protect bees in bear country
Answer: While electric fencing is a great option for several different types of animals, we apologize as we do not recommend it for bears.
Question: Would 1" polytape and this charger work for a horse

Answer: Our electric fence systems will work best and be most effective for animals over 10 pounds.
Question: Does this unit only provide a small shock to squirrels, but not enough to kill them? I just need a small shock to deter and not kill squirrels
Answer: We apologize as we do not recommend electric fencing for squirrels. Our products can only be recommended for animals heavier than 10 pounds.
Question: The specifications say "AC" is that just 60 HZ or is it pulsed? If pulsed how long and frequent are the pulses

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a pulsed shock or constant shock? Thanks
Answer: Pulsed...though I am not an authority...I believe intermittent chargers are the only chargers now sold. And, you'll find this particular charger as being quite shocking!
Question: Is it effective on bears
Answer: Yes. I needed to keep a 600 lb. bear out of my fruit orchards and vineyards. I used 2 strands of aluminum wire, one hot, one ground. Marked the hot wire between each post with a small piece of red caution tape tied on as inducement to "nose it". Bears are curious. Worked great, and worked immediately. Before, I had massive destruction of both trees and fences every summer and fall, after installation, no disturbance at all. Used one 6' ground rod, with insulators holding the wire out from a T-post and 6' turkey wire fence with top rail so deer won't jump it. Effective for deer, bear, any animal because once they touch the wire, they learn real quick to leave it alone. The steel turkey wire plus steel T-posts also act as additional ground. If they put a paw on the fence, and touch the hot, zap!
Question: does the battery come with it
Answer: Yes, the battery does come with it. However after I received mine it worked for a couple of days and quit. The manufacture is providing warranty work after I pay the expense of shipping.
Question: I just ordered this charger but I plan on using HorseGuard tape fencing... I just read a review that said the charger does not work well with tape
Answer: We have never used it with tape, but one thing we found that REALLY helps with the connection between the box and the fencing is good copper wire. It helps transmit a very hot shock. It might be worth a try with the tape before returning the box!

User questions & answers

Question: Is this strong enough to kill rats? I want to mount this on my privacy fence to stop rats coming over the brick wall from my neighbors yard
Answer: This energizer is a pulsating unit. When an animal comes in contact with the hot wire, they will be able to break away and run free during the off pulse. It is not designed to kill animals.
Question: Will this charger work on raccoons? Can it be used on a net laying on the ground or does it have to be suspended off the ground
Answer: This charger can be used to deter raccoons. Electric fencing is not able to be placed directly on the ground as it will short out the fence line.
Question: If an animal gets stuck in the wire will it shut or cut off so it wont kill it
Answer: This unit is a pulsating energizer, which means voltage does not continually flow through the wire but rather pulsates. The animal would have an opportunity to break free.
Question: Can this be mounted outside, un-protected from the elements
Answer: No. All of our AC-powered chargers must be mounted inside or in a waterproof enclosure.

Remember, if you extend the length of the fence by adding to the fence or subdividing it with temporary fences, you need to make sure your charger is powerful enough. If you use a more powerful charger, make sure you increase the number of ground rods in the ground system. Avoid using different metals in your electric fence. In damp conditions, when an electric current passes through the differing metals, electrolysis will occur. For example, using stainless steel ground rods and an aluminum leadout wire will cause problems. In a short space of time, the aluminium will disintegrate. If possible, keep the wire joints above the soil to improve airflow and reduce electrolysis. Seal the wire joints with thick paint, epoxy or tar to keep moisture away from the joint area. Use identical metals in your electric fence will avoid problems with electrolysis altogether.

  • Set includes 1 Patriot Electric Fence Charger plus 1 250ft spool of Patriot Made in the USA 17 Gauge aluminum wire and Quick Tip Guide. Does NOT include a ground rod. Only effective for small nuisance animals.
  • PE2 Output Voltage: Up to 5 kV max, 2.8 kV @ 500 ohms;Patriot Wire tensile strength 38,000 PSI; Fi-Shock Breaking load: 90 lbs; Fi-Shock aluminum wire Will not rust; Will Keep Dogs from Digging Out of Their Pen; Keep Rabbits and Deer Out of Your Garden; For Use as an Electric Dog Fence
  • If you test the wire to see if it will shock you, don't be standing in boots that insulate you from the ground. It will not work then! The ground system should be at least 33' (10 m) away from electric or telephone ground systems to avoid interference.
  • Moist soil conducts electricity much better than dry soil. If possible, locate the ground system in a boggy area. In dry weather, wet the area around the ground system to keep the soil moist.
  • Make sure there are a sufficient number of ground rods. See your charger’s user manual for recommendations. If in doubt, use at least three ground rods. Use more ground rods if your soil conditions are not ideal. Ground rods should be at least 6'6" (2 m) long. One long ground rod works better than several short ground rods.

User questions & answers

Question: I just need to cover the back of my yard. The dog only digs under the fence in the very back of my property. Will this work for me
Answer: The dog needs to cross the circuit in order to shock. The ground stake is one side and a hot wire above the ground where he digs is the other side. While standing on the ground, if he touches the hot wire, he's zapped. It can be done.
Question: I know this comes with 250’ is 17 gauge wire but if I need to can I add more to travel the intire circumfrance of my yard
Answer: yes you can add more wire. I think that the range of that transmitter is about a quarter mile.
Question: Is this waterproof? I cannot mount it inside my home
Answer: They are sturdy but not waterproof; most manufacturers recommend installing under shelter but you can make your own cover out of a milk jug or plastic container to fit over the top, just cut out holes for the wires and cord or plug to come through. You will have to replace occasionally as they break down but for a small price (or nothing if you recycle a container) you will extend the life of your charger.
Question: I want to add this to a 6-foot chain-link fence is that possible
Answer: Yes it is and there are insulators to attach the wire specifically made for chain link fences.

User questions & answers

Question: What happens if the the output is short circuited
Answer: We recommend keeping the fence clear of any debris, grass or tall weeds. If the line is grounded out, the energizer could be damaged. Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322) with any questions or for additional assistance.
Question: Would this work on a chain link fence
Answer: None of our energizers are designed to power a chain link fence. This product can be used if you are running a single strand of wire on insulators, approximately 4 inches from the chain link.
Question: What is the voltage
Answer: not sure of the voltage but I fence 5 acres for horses and charge the battery every 6 weeks . have been very happy with it. hope this helps out . I recommend a solar charger , my next purchase and they're cheap .
Question: does the battery goes inside the unit
Answer: No, you have to have an external battery. The higher the amperage the better. I put the fencer unit and the battery inside a wooden box with a cover on it. I then run the wire to the fence up a piece of wood attached to the side of the box and the ground wire out one side of the box to the ground rod.
