Every exterior hive part that may encounter rain or snow has been built with Fir wood and has been coated in 100% natural beeswax to help weather the elements. We’ve thoughtfully chosen to use Fir wood over the traditional Pine because Fir has a tighter knit grain-flow within the wood than Pine does. This makes our exterior parts far more durable and less likely to shrink, expand, warp, or twist from the rain than Pine would. Once we’ve cut the wood, we dip each part into a pool of natural beeswax. We allow the beeswax to be soaked into the hive parts. This not only protects the wood, but is also what gives our hives their natural golden honey lustrous allure. The delicate details of our durable dovetails were designed to hold together for years to come and create a joint that will stay perfectly square. After months of testing, we decided to have our frames come from the forests of New Zealand Pine. We’ve chosen this wood because it handles the meticulous cuts that are necessary for the grooves in our frames better than Fir handled it. This hive kit comes with two different types of CellTech foundations that have both been dipped in 100% beeswax to encourage your bees to quickly accept their new home and make an even layer of comb. The first type of foundation is a black food grade foundation made for the deep brood frames. The second type is a natural honey colored foundation made for the medium super frames. This kit also includes a Telescoping Top Cover that has been capped with galvanized steel to resist rust. Question:	Can these be painted if I want, even though it says they don’t have to be
Answer:	They have a really nice thick coat of wax, so they don't need to be painted. If you wanted to you would have to scrape the wax off, to help the paint adhere, which may damage the product. Best to leave it unpainted.
Question:	Can this be used with mason jars to collect the honey
Answer:	If you are referring to the hive where the honey is collected by opening a spigot to drain into a mason jar, then the answer is No. This is a traditionally designed hive where you need to remove the frames and collect the honey through a centrifuge.

Answer:	It does not. It comes with nails for securing the hive sides and the inner frames. When I assembled, I drilled holes just to insure I didn't split any of the wood. Didn't add much time to the assembly either.

Answer:	once you have your hive set up. your going to need actual bees. you can order them in the mail and they come to your home in a package.
Question:	Does this kit come completely assembled
Answer:	Not exactly, simple assembly is required...it is a well made and complete set to get you started, just add Bee's and something for them to pollinate. You can also learn from this how to make your own hives in the future, Blessings~~~
Question:	The review section Galloway writes "you will need 2 more hives ... if you want to harvest any honey". Do I need 3 hives to get honey
Answer:	Absolutely not. I harvested honey from a single hive last year. They may have meant to say 3 or more supers on a hive. I would not harvest honey from the bottom 2 or 3 supers. Only the medium or shallow supers above the queen excluder. Just my opinion. Hope this helps
Question:	My 12 year old son wants to start. Is this a good starter pack to get him going

We need all the pollenators we can locate now, as so many of the pollenators have been killed off with pesticides. Mason bees are known to be peaceful bees. Answer:	It comes with a complete hive. You would need protective gear, tools (smoker, hive tool, etc), pest management stuff, a feeder and feed in addition to the bees.
Question:	Assembly instructions. Box didn’t come with assembly instructions. Where can I get a copy
Answer:	The dovetail will all interlock so take 2 sides and a front (or back), making sure handles are all with curved side down, push the interlocking pieces together with one side and end piece, then the other. Repeat the same with the opposing end piece and then use nails to secure every other peg or so, to keep together. Then, for frames, take long widest piece, fit the shorter side pieces over each end, fit a screen panel in the groove and then take slender long piece and clamp down on opposite end of side pieces until you create each framed screen. Nail with smaller nails on ends to keep secured. Once box is together and frames are ready you can see the track you drop the wider piece of frame into, much like a hanging file folder, and you're good to go.

Answer:	They come unassembled bit yes they have the logo. They are wax coated not stained. By far the best looking and quality boxes that i have bought.

Answer:	8 frame is smaller than 10 frame and we wanted that because when the hives are full of honey we can still pick them up.
