| Answer: | The ink in these pens is an organic solvent base with an enamel paint, very similar to nail polish. It is designed to mark on porous surfaces such as paper/cardstock, fabric, and even walls. fingernails are not porous, so solvent will evaporate quickly, leaving the enamel behind; the same is true with steel. You can mark up steel using these pens, and one or both of these will happen: 1) the solvent in the pen may discolor the existing color on the steel, even to causing bubbles in the paint. or, 2) you will create a piece of rare style and beauty, only to have it flake off 3 days later. Consider actual nail polish (which would at least be cheaper, RUST-OLEUM type paint (which you can spray into a container and use with fine brush, or spraying the steel with primer to give the paint a porous surface to which to cling. Note: I haven't tried the third suggestion myself. |

The Identi-Pen does not contain archival inks as it is dye-based, which means over time if exposed to sunlight, the marks can fade. | Answer: | The ink is not water soluble, but it can be rubbed off, or the label itself may disintegrate. I have used this pen to label water bottles and coffee mugs, and it always rubs off after a while. My recommendation is to put a piece of clear tape over your writing, or clear nail polish. |

| Answer: | Yes. I've used them with chalk board tape (from a roll similar in size to standard duct tape). Almost a year later, the silver lettering has not faded, lost its sheen or crisp detail. I also use it to label temporary projects with blue painter's tape, and for labeling black cords & cables (lamp, printer, etc.) as well as misc. stored power cords (whether it's 6v, 9v, etc.) & battery-operated items (AA x 2, AAA x 3, 9v, etc.). Holds up well unless scraped off. |

| Answer: | They will fade over time; especially on dark fabric. I'm not sure if they're acid free, either. I would not recommend for use on a quilt. Try a marker actually meant for fabric painting (look at utrecht.com) or try something like micron markers that can be heat set with an iron. |

| Answer: | While these are "fine point" by marker standards, they're not all that "fine" by other pen standards. Fresh (new) they'll leave a mark roughly 2x to 3x the thickness of a ballpoint pen. That's writing directly using the very tip of the marker. The way the tip is designed, angled sideways you can make a mark MUCH wider than that, which can be nice for underlining or bold text. It's worth pointing out that the nature of these tips wear down relatively quickly, so after a while the finest line you'll be able to make will be about 3x the width of a fresh tip. But, if the pens aren't clearance priced - which often means they're getting old and may be starting to dry out, they'll last surprisingly long. I've got some that I've used almost daily for probably five or more years and still haven't dried up or run out of ink yet. Bear in mind, I use them for writing short notes, in large 1 to 3 inch tall text, for the most part, but their longevity is still rather impressive IMHO. I've only received one dud, which Sharpie replaced, after I emailed them about it and sent them a picture. |

| Answer: | This will probably rub off if not dried properly but you could protect it with a clear varnish. I don’t usually use the metallic on anything that needs to last too long as it can chip but if varnished it should last longer. Hope this helps |
