8 best space pens
Space pens, also known as Fisher Space Pens, are a type of ballpoint pen known for their ability to write in challenging conditions, including zero gravity, extreme temperatures, and underwater. They have gained popularity as reliable writing instruments, especially among astronauts and those who work in extreme environments. Here are some key features and information about space pens:
Invention: The Fisher Space Pen was invented by American inventor Paul C. Fisher in 1965. Fisher developed this pen with the aim of creating a reliable writing instrument that could function in the harsh conditions of space.
Pressurized Cartridge: The unique feature of the Space Pen is its pressurized ink cartridge. Unlike regular ballpoint pens, which rely on gravity to feed ink to the ballpoint, Space Pens use a sealed and pressurized ink cartridge. This allows them to write in zero gravity, underwater, over grease, and in extreme temperatures ranging from -30°F to 250°F (-34°C to 121°C).
Ink: Fisher Space Pens use a specially formulated ink that is thixotropic, meaning it becomes less viscous when pressure is applied to it. This ensures a consistent flow of ink regardless of the pen's orientation.
Variety of Models: Fisher Space Pens come in various models, including retractable pens, cap pens, and pen/pencil combinations. They are available in different materials such as brass, chrome, and plastic, catering to various preferences and budgets.
Applications: While originally designed for space exploration, Space Pens have found uses beyond space missions. They are favored by divers, hikers, military personnel, and anyone who needs a reliable pen in challenging conditions. They are also popular as everyday writing instruments for those who appreciate their durability and dependability.
Refills: Fisher Space Pen refills are widely available and can be used to replenish the ink supply of Space Pens. This extends the lifespan of the pen, making it a long-term investment.
Awards and Recognition: Fisher Space Pens have received recognition for their innovation and reliability. They have received awards from various organizations and have been used on space missions by NASA and other space agencies.
In summary, Fisher Space Pens are known for their ability to write in extreme conditions, making them a popular choice for professionals working in challenging environments and space enthusiasts alike. Their pressurized ink cartridges and durability have made them a symbol of reliability in the world of writing instruments.
