12 best slide and film scanners

Slide and film scanners are specialized devices used for digitizing analog film, including 35mm slides, negatives, and film strips. These scanners are commonly categorized under Scanners, Scanners Accessories, Office Electronics, and Office Products and serve the purpose of converting physical film media into digital formats for archiving, sharing, and editing. Here's what you need to know about slide and film scanners:

  1. Types of Film Scanners:

    • Flatbed Scanners: Some flatbed scanners come with transparency adapters or holders that allow you to scan slides, negatives, and film strips. They are versatile but may not provide the same level of quality and convenience as dedicated film scanners.
    • Dedicated Film Scanners: These scanners are designed specifically for scanning film media and often deliver higher resolution and better image quality. They come in various formats, including dedicated slide scanners and film strip scanners.
  2. Resolution: Film scanners offer high optical resolutions, typically measured in dots per inch (DPI). Higher DPI settings result in more detailed and sharper digital images. Scanners with resolutions of 2400 DPI or more are common for film scanning.

  3. Color Depth: Film scanners can capture images with a high color depth, ensuring accurate color reproduction and tonal range in the digital files.

  4. Film Formats: Most film scanners support a range of film formats, including 35mm slides and negatives, medium format film, and sometimes even large format film. Ensure that the scanner you choose is compatible with the types of film you intend to digitize.

  5. Dust and Scratch Removal: Some film scanners come equipped with hardware and software features for removing dust and scratches from scanned images, enhancing image quality.

  6. Speed: Scanning speed can vary among different models. Faster scanners are more efficient for digitizing large collections of film.

  7. Software: Many film scanners come with bundled software for image editing and organizing scanned files. These programs may also include color correction and restoration tools.

  8. Connectivity: Film scanners typically connect to computers via USB or other standard interfaces. Ensure compatibility with your computer's operating system.

  9. Compatibility: Make sure the scanner is compatible with your film type and size. Some scanners may require specific film holders or adapters for different formats.

  10. Price Range: The cost of film scanners can vary widely depending on features and quality. Entry-level models may be affordable, while high-end scanners designed for professional use can be more expensive.

  11. Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance of the scanner's scanning bed and optics are essential to ensure optimal performance and image quality.

Film scanners are valuable tools for preserving and digitizing analog memories, whether they are family photos, slides, or historical negatives.Choosing the right film scanner depends on your specific needs, budget, and the types of film you plan to digitize.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

User questions & answers

Question: My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images
Answer: Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon.
Question: What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb
Answer: Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me.
Question: Does it scan black and white film
Answer: No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs.
Question: Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm
Answer: I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520.

User questions & answers

Question: does this invert colors so that the film negative shows as a color picture or does it just enlarge the negative
Answer: You are right, the image will be mostly black. There is a holder for 8mm film but you would have to take the film out of the cardboard.
Question: Can this copy to usb
Answer: My instruction book says the scanner has 128MB of built memory available to store about 50 scanned images. The scanner will also accept SD, SDHC and SDXC cards with a max of 128GB. I have not found a way to tell how much memory is in the scanner. I have scanned over 1400 slides so far and it is great. The scanner has a counter that counts the number of scans but I wish there was a way to reset it. The Model FS51 has 64mB of internal memory per the specifications, Maybe the rep was looking at this one. Hope this helps.
Question: The description and reviews are a bit confusing, will the scanner convert b&w and color negatives to good quality photos? thanks
Answer: It scans all negative film, up to 35mm.
Question: Receives a yellow exclamation pint. What does that mean
Answer: It covers fully the entire film. You have to be careful how you load into scanner but it will scan all the film.

User questions & answers

Question: Which button do I push to actually save the image
Answer: See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides).
Question: Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air
Answer: I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer.
Question: Does this work with 16mm reels
Answer: If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie.
Question: My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner
Answer: I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine.
Question: So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files
Answer: You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well.
Question: how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans
Answer: I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners.
Question: How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you
Answer: I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan.
Question: Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience
Answer: Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia

User questions & answers

Question: Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine
Answer: Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results.
Question: Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks
Answer: I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly.
Question: will this accept 2 5/8 size slides
Answer: Which/what mode?
Question: can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters
Answer: This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the slide feeder automatic? Can multiple slides automatically be fed into the scanner or do I have to babysit it
Answer: It's manual and it only accepts one slide at a time inside the scanner. Keep in mind the price you're paying for this item. For the price, it does exactly what it says it will do and it does it well, but also for the price, it's a pretty basic device.
Question: can this save to a thumb drive
Answer: Only saves to an SD card. You can then transfer files to thumb drive on computer
Question: Will this scsn carousels of slides
Answer: No, you have to remove the slides from the carousel and place them in the scanner holder, about 10-12 slides each time. The trick is get the slide orientation facing correct (as opposed to a mirror image).
Question: how many slides does the slide feeder hold
Answer: The stackable slide feeder holds at least 20 slides. It can jam but it is easily fixed and you can move to the next slide. For the cost, this item is great and did exactly what I needed.

User questions & answers

Question: can the picture be stored onto a thumb drive
Answer: No. It is a light source and will destroy undeveloped film
Question: This converts actual film rolls? Undevelooed film, not nefatives
Answer: Check to make certain that your batteries are installed correctly and not loose or in the wrong direction.
Question: What is the size of the image scanned from 35 mm negative
Answer: Worked with standard 35 mm slides
Question: Can you copy old home movies
Answer: For those, like me that have thousands of mom and dad with kid vacation photos and deceased Dutch Aunts and Cousins, I found a very small and short piece of double sticky tape is sufficient to hold the very thin aluminum slide cartridge frame into the slide scanner. So far, so good. At 72 years young those rare family slides flood my soul and I can produce 25-30 per minute.

User questions & answers

Question: will it scan 120 negatives
Answer: This product will not scan 120 or 220 format film negatives. It will scan 110 format negatives. The answer by Jerry D is incorrect. It is possible to feed 120 or 220 negatives directly through the slot (without a carrier), but the image sensor will not capture the entire image and parts of the negative will be out of focus. This appears to be true of the "Wolverine F2D" as well.
Question: Is there any way to change the jpg compression or use another format like tiff
Answer: I can't say with 100% certainty, but I don't think so. I couldn't find a way to do it--but I'm not overly tech-y either.
Question: will this convert Super-8 movies with out taking a "snap shot" each frame in the film strip
Answer: Don, NO. The Wolverine is a PICTURE scanner and not a Movie transfer device. To transfer movies you should send the reel out to one of the professional transfer houses.
Question: What is the DPI

User questions & answers

Question: Does this scanner produce a better or worse product than a flatbed scanner
Answer: Included sample pictures in my review (~July 2020). The flatbed scanned image pixelates much sooner than the negative image captured by the slide scanner. Neither image is as clear as the original photo processed from the camera negative, and both scanning formats are very sensitive to dust, so make sure to clean not only the negative, but also the negative scanner unit. I did not consider the Wolverine a great value, and I am still searching for a commercial photo lab to make prints/images from my negatives.
Question: Correction, I meant can I scan 4x5 negatives
Answer: The opening is only large enough for a 35MM Slide. So NO it will not do 4x5 Negatives. Carriers are with the unit down to 8mm film.
Question: Product description says microfiche is supported, but how? I have 3"x5" sheets of microfiche images. Cut the sheets into strips of 1/2"x1/2" images
Answer: My Wolverine came also with a tray for 120 film - Aperture 3.5" wide x 2.25" high. This might work? Or the vendor MAY sell a tray specifically for 3"x5" ... but I suspect that this is a bit too large for the viewing screen (which is about the same as the 3.5" x 2.25" aperture of the 120 film slide tray.
Question: Will this also scan microfilm
Answer: This comes with several adapters for various negative sizes. Will your negative fit? Depends on the size. If not this one, I’m sure there is one out there that can do it.
