11 best professional studio monitors
Professional studio monitors are a crucial component in the realm of studio recording and audio production. These monitors, also known as studio reference monitors or speakers, are designed to provide accurate and transparent audio reproduction. Unlike consumer speakers, which may enhance certain frequencies to make music sound more appealing, studio monitors aim to present an uncolored, flat response so that producers and engineers can make precise decisions in the mixing and mastering process.
Key features and considerations for professional studio monitors include:
Flat Frequency Response:
- Studio monitors should have a flat frequency response, meaning they reproduce sound evenly across the entire audible spectrum. This enables the user to hear the audio as it truly is without any bias towards specific frequencies.
Accuracy:
- Accurate sound reproduction is essential for professionals who need to make critical judgments about the quality of the audio they are working on. This accuracy helps in making informed decisions about mixing and mastering.
Nearfield and Midfield Monitors:
- Studio monitors are often categorized as nearfield or midfield monitors.Nearfield monitors are designed to be placed close to the listener, typically on the mixing console, while midfield monitors are placed at a greater distance in larger studios.
Bi-Amped and Tri-Amped Designs:
- Many high-end studio monitors are bi-amped or tri-amped. Bi-amping means that the speaker has separate amplifiers for the woofer and the tweeter, while tri-amping adds a separate amplifier for the midrange driver. This design allows for better control and optimization of each speaker component.
Driver Size:
- Studio monitors come in various driver sizes, with common options being 5-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, or larger. The choice of driver size depends on the size of the studio space and the specific requirements of the audio professional.
Ported or Sealed Enclosures:
- Studio monitors can have either ported or sealed enclosures. Ported monitors have a vent to allow air to move in and out, which can enhance low-frequency response. Sealed monitors, on the other hand, provide a tighter bass response but might sacrifice some low-end extension.
Room Acoustics:
- The acoustics of the studio space play a crucial role in the performance of studio monitors. Acoustic treatment, including bass traps and diffusers, is often used to create an optimal listening environment.
Brand and Model:
- There are several reputable brands in the market that produce high-quality studio monitors. Common names include KRK, Yamaha, Genelec, Adam Audio, and JBL, among others. The choice of brand and model can depend on personal preference and budget.
It's important for audio professionals to audition studio monitors in their own working environment to assess how they interact with the acoustics of the space. The ultimate goal is to choose monitors that provide an accurate representation of the audio being produced.

Woofers that deliver a cleaner overall sound.
Every Eris-series studio monitor utilizes a woven composite, low-frequency driver. The weave and nature of the Eris E3.5’s 3.5-inch woofer result in a more constant dispersion pattern throughout the frequency range, resulting in less time-smeared audio and cleaner overall sound.
Smooth high end and wide sweet spot.
The Eris E3.5 is equipped with a one-inch silk-dome tweeter that produces a smooth and refined sound, accurately reproducing transients and high frequencies. The tweeter is designed to radiate sound with a fairly wide dispersion pattern, creating a large optimal listening area or “sweet spot” so you can move around and still hear everything accurately.
Connect to virtually any line-level source.
With three different types of audio inputs, it’s easy to feed audio to your Eris monitors from a mixer, an interface, a media player, or almost any other line-level source. The Eris E3.5 is equipped with rear-panel, ¼-inch TRS and RCA inputs, as well as front-panel ⅛-inch stereo, unbalanced line inputs for use with mobile audio devices. With this selection, you’ll have no problem hooking your Eris speakers up with virtually any line-level source, including your smartphone or tablet. The loud, clear, front-panel headphone amplifier lets you work and play in stealth mode, without disturbing your housemates.

User questions & answers
Question: | What stereo jacks do I need to get to connect to my iPhone |
Answer: | If you're going straight into the speakers from your iPhone you need a 1/8" stereo plug the splits to 2 1/4" plugs :) |
Question: | How much easier will it be to mix with a pair of these over cheaper monitors (M-Audio BX5) considering a really crappy mixing room environment |
Answer: | The same $700 will go a long ways towards acoustic treatment for your room. If the frequency response in your room is skewed, the finest monitors in the world won't be of much use to you. Treat the low frequency response of your room, then address any flutter/echo/slap-back issues in the mid and hi frequency range. Then, consider upgrading monitors. That being said, I love my HS80Ms, and they are a definite step above the M-Audio BX5. |
Question: | Can these plugeed in your desktop computer |
Answer: | The speaker has 1/4" TRS and inputs. You can use either of it to send the audio signal to each speaker. I have an audio interface (plugged into my computer via USB) and I use 1/4" TRS cables from the audio interface to the speakers. |
Question: | Is the price for two monitors or for one |
Answer: | Description clearly says "This bundle includes (2) Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitors". |

Yamaha HS Series Monitors
Ever since the 1970's the iconic white woofer and signature sound of Yamaha's nearfield reference monitors have become a genuine industry standard for a reason - their accuracy. Unlike studio monitors with added bass or treble frequencies which may sound more flattering at first, HS Series speakers were designed to give you the most honest, precise reference possible, providing an ideal sonic platform to build on throughout the mixing process.
By combining acquired knowledge and expertise with state-of-the-art sound technologies, Yamaha's speaker engineering team have examined, then optimized, every aspect that has contributed to making these monitors the most trusted in the business. The second generation HS Series also adds a new 6.5" model to the lineup, bringing its exceptional accuracy to an even greater variety of recording environments.
Newly Developed Transducers
The HS Series features newly developed transducers that achieve astonishingly smooth response over a wide range of bandwidth. These transducers utilize an advanced magnetic field design that regulates the flow of magnetic response to provide seamless, natural sonic transitions.
High Performance Amp Unit
HS Series speakers employ an amplifier unit perfectly matched to the transducers utilized in each model of the series. Featuring a bi-amp design with a separate dedicated amp for both the woofer and the tweeter, this amplifier unit ensures that each HS Series speaker consistently delivers high-resolution sound with exceptionally flat response across the sound spectrum.
Controls and Connectivity
HS Series full-range models feature two response controls with detailed settings that allow them to adapt to the surface acoustics of rooms of varying shape and size. For inputs, HS full-range speakers can accommodate a wide range of balanced and unbalanced sources such as mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces with XLR and TRS phone jacks.
Low Resonance Enclosure Design
HS Series cabinets are designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosures are constructed from a very dense and resilient MDF with a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors.
Cutting Edge Noise Reduction
Speaker port design can greatly influence the clarity of overall sound. Often a vortex at the either end of the port can generate air vibrations inside of the port, causing unwanted noise. By adopting an advanced noise reduction technology that incorporates a thorough analysis of a visual representation of the sound, Yamaha's engineers are able to control and reduce the vortex.
New HS Install Versions
The new installation version of the renown Yamaha HS Studio Monitors include mounting points and screws for installation. Compatible with wall, ceiling, and baton brackets (sold separately.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the power switch in the back the only way to turn on the speakers? does it have any din control or anything similar |
Answer: | The power button at the back of the speakers is the only way to turn them on. |
Question: | Do these come with the cables to plug into a audio interface? Or do i need to buy some |
Answer: | If I recall correctly the only cables that came with mine was the AC power cables. I had to buy 2 XLR cables to connect the monitors to my guitar effects processor. |
Question: | Is this the price for both monitors or just one |
Answer: | They are sold in pairs at that price, as indicated in the product title |
Question: | How to add subwoofer to this system |
Answer: | If you have LSR310S sub from JBL, it can be easily added to 306p speakers. Connect left and right outputs of the signal source directly to the LEFT IN and RIGHT IN connectors of the subwoofer. Then connect LEFT OUT and RIGHT OUT connectors of the subwoofer to the inputs of the left and right speakers respectively. You will need a bunch of XLR or 6 mm (¼") TRS connector cables. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have the ddj sb3, what cord should i use to connect them |
Answer: | I’d use TRS or XLR cables. Looks like your equipment uses red and white aux cords |
Question: | Does a female xlr cord go into this |
Answer: | As the photo on the product page shows, you would plug the male end of an XLR cable into the monitor for balanced operation. The monitors follow the standard practice of having female XLR connectors as inputs, just as you would find on mixing boards and other studio equipment. Outputs generally have male XLR connectors. To accomodate this, standard XLR cables have a male connector on one end and a female one on the other. An unusual arrangement, should you ever encounter one, would require a non-standard cable or a gender-changing adapter. |
Question: | Is this the G |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Is this the price for just ONE of these |
Answer: | Yes. Just ONE. I thought it was for two, but no...just one. |

JBL 305P MkII 5 inch Powered Studio Monitor (Pair) with 2x Senor Microphone Cable and Zorro Sounds Polishing Cloth
The next-generation JBL 305P MkII compact powered studio monitor makes legendary JBL performance available to every studio. With the revolutionary JBL Image Control Waveguide and refined transducers, JBL 305P MkII offers stunning detail, precise imaging, a wide sweet spot and impressive dynamic range that enhances the critical listening capabilities of any modern workspace. Featuring patented technologies derived from the JBL 7 Series and M2 Master Reference Monitors, and sporting a sleek, modern design, JBL 305P MkII delivers outstanding performance and an enjoyable mix experience at an accessible price
JBL 305P MkII Powered Studio Monitor Features:
- JBL 305P MkII active studio monitors are a great nearfield solution for any serious audio engineer or music producer. They're great for mixing music in your DAW software, editing video, or any other task that requires monitoring accuracy
- BL designed the 305P MkII with advanced features acquired from their 7 Series and M2 Master Reference Monitor, making legendary JBL performance accessible to every studio. JBL's innovative Image Control Waveguide works in concert with refined transducers to deliver a well-defined and incredibly dimensional stereo image
- When you can clearly hear everything in your mix, you make accurate sonic judgments — which leads to better-sounding recordings. To that end, JBL applied innovative elements from their 7 Series and M2 Master Reference Monitors to give the 305P MkII truly impressive sound reproduction capabilities. The Image Control Waveguide design is one such feature, and it helps the 305P MkII present a deep, detailed soundstage and a wide, room-friendly sweet spot.
- Wide sweet spot equals a better studio experience - we know you don't spend every second of your studio time in the ideal mixing position. JBL 305P MkII monitors have a broad sweet spot, which means there's less variation in what you hear when you're not in the perfect position. Especially if you have clients in the room, you want consistent sound throughout your studio, and you'll like what you hear from the 305P MkII.
- Checking your mix at low volume levels is a great way to confirm your overall balances, but many monitors will suffer in the bass regions when monitoring at low levels. The JBL 305P MkII uses JBL's patented Slip Stream low-frequency port for accurate bass response at low playback levels. The double-flared port shape also reduces the turbulence some ported designs suffer from, meaning that bass response remains pure when you turn the 305P MkII back up
User questions & answers
