12 best powered monitors

Powered monitors, also known as active studio monitors, are specialized speakers used in audio production, recording studios, and other professional audio environments. Here are key points related to powered monitors:

  1. Built-In Amplification:

    • Unlike passive studio monitors, powered monitors have built-in amplifiers. This eliminates the need for an external amplifier, simplifying the setup and ensuring that the amplifier is matched to the speaker.
  2. Frequency Response:

    • Powered monitors are designed to provide a flat and accurate frequency response. This means they reproduce audio signals with minimal coloration, making them ideal for critical listening and audio production tasks.
  3. Studio Applications:

    • Powered monitors are commonly used in recording studios, control rooms, and audio production environments. Their accuracy allows engineers and producers to make informed decisions about the sound they are working with.
  4. Nearfield and Midfield Monitors:

    • Monitors come in different sizes, with nearfield monitors designed for close listening (typically placed on the mixing console) and midfield monitors for slightly larger listening distances. The choice depends on the studio size and the engineer's preferences.
  5. Bi-Amping and Tri-Amping:

    • Some high-end powered monitors feature bi-amping or tri-amping configurations. This means that different amplifiers power different components of the speaker (e.g., low-frequency driver, midrange driver, and tweeter), providing more precise control over each frequency range.
  6. Driver Configuration:

    • Powered monitors usually consist of multiple drivers, including a woofer for low frequencies, a midrange driver for mid frequencies, and a tweeter for high frequencies. The combination and design of these drivers contribute to the overall sound quality.
  7. Room Acoustics:

    • The acoustics of the room where powered monitors are placed can significantly impact their performance. Acoustic treatment and proper speaker placement are essential for achieving accurate monitoring.
  8. Inputs and Controls:

    • Powered monitors often have various inputs, including balanced XLR and TRS, and sometimes unbalanced RCA. They may also include controls such as volume knobs and switches for adjusting high and low-frequency response to match the room acoustics.
  9. Subwoofer Integration:

    • In larger studios or situations where extended low-frequency response is needed, powered monitors can be complemented with a subwoofer. This integration is done to enhance the overall frequency range and provide a more comprehensive monitoring solution.
  10. Brand and Model Variations:

    • Different manufacturers offer a variety of powered monitors with distinct features and characteristics. Engineers often choose monitors based on their personal preferences, the type of audio work they do, and the acoustics of their studio space.
  11. Critical Listening:

    • Powered monitors are essential tools for critical listening, allowing audio professionals to accurately assess recordings, mixes, and other audio content.

For optimal results, it's crucial to choose powered monitors that suit the specific needs of the audio production environment, considering factors such as room size, acoustic treatment, and personal preferences in sound reproduction.

Woofers that deliver a cleaner overall sound.

Every Eris-series studio monitor utilizes a woven composite, low-frequency driver. The weave and nature of the Eris E3.5’s 3.5-inch woofer result in a more constant dispersion pattern throughout the frequency range, resulting in less time-smeared audio and cleaner overall sound.

Smooth high end and wide sweet spot.

The Eris E3.5 is equipped with a one-inch silk-dome tweeter that produces a smooth and refined sound, accurately reproducing transients and high frequencies. User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with cables
Answer: This speaker comes with a power cable, but audio cables are not included. The speaker has one XLR and one 1/4" TRS connector, so you can purchase whatever cables work with your system.
Question: How's the bass on this? Is it boomy or muddy
Answer: Realistically, if you are working with contemporary EDM or any electronic music with sounds below 45Hz, you need a sub. Don't get me wrong, the LSR305s are excellent, clearer than the 308s. For material like Country, the bass is sufficient. Even for Rap and EDM you can adjust and place them just right, and estimate how things will sound on a big club or car system. But pairing the LSR305s with e.g. a LSR310S sub gives you the real thing, though sub placement is SO critical it's another rabbit hole.
Question: Do these hiss? I sent back lsr305 due to the hissy tweeters
Answer: Some do. It’s normal. on the ones that do they are extremely quiet. The “hiss” is only audible while the speakers are not in use and is caused by the internal amp. I wouldn’t call it a hiss as much as it is just static noise from the amps unused electricity. If you don’t like that, maybe these aren’t the ones for you. But I will say that most other powered monitors I have used make this exact same noise. With mine mounted on the wall about 2 feet in front of me and 2 feet above me pointed down at my seat I cannot hear the hiss until ~90%+ volume, And again, exclusively when they are not in use. Hope this helps.
Question: What cables do I need to connect these to my computer
Answer: If you are wanting to connect to computer or a cellphone with a 3.5mm jack then do an Amazon search on "3.5 mm TRS to Dual XLR3M Stereo Breakout Cable" or "3.5mm TRS to Dual 1/8 inch TS Stereo Breakout Cable".

User questions & answers

Question: What stereo jacks do I need to get to connect to my iPhone
Answer: If you're going straight into the speakers from your iPhone you need a 1/8" stereo plug the splits to 2 1/4" plugs :)
Question: How much easier will it be to mix with a pair of these over cheaper monitors (M-Audio BX5) considering a really crappy mixing room environment
Answer: The same $700 will go a long ways towards acoustic treatment for your room. If the frequency response in your room is skewed, the finest monitors in the world won't be of much use to you. Treat the low frequency response of your room, then address any flutter/echo/slap-back issues in the mid and hi frequency range. Then, consider upgrading monitors. That being said, I love my HS80Ms, and they are a definite step above the M-Audio BX5.
Question: Can these plugeed in your desktop computer
Answer: The speaker has 1/4" TRS and inputs. You can use either of it to send the audio signal to each speaker. I have an audio interface (plugged into my computer via USB) and I use 1/4" TRS cables from the audio interface to the speakers.
Question: Is the price for two monitors or for one
Answer: Description clearly says "This bundle includes (2) Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitors".

Yamaha HS Series Monitors

Ever since the 1970's the iconic white woofer and signature sound of Yamaha's nearfield reference monitors have become a genuine industry standard for a reason - their accuracy. Unlike studio monitors with added bass or treble frequencies which may sound more flattering at first, HS Series speakers were designed to give you the most honest, precise reference possible, providing an ideal sonic platform to build on throughout the mixing process.

By combining acquired knowledge and expertise with state-of-the-art sound technologies, Yamaha's speaker engineering team have examined, then optimized, every aspect that has contributed to making these monitors the most trusted in the business. The second generation HS Series also adds a new 6.5" model to the lineup, bringing its exceptional accuracy to an even greater variety of recording environments.

Newly Developed Transducers

The HS Series features newly developed transducers that achieve astonishingly smooth response over a wide range of bandwidth. These transducers utilize an advanced magnetic field design that regulates the flow of magnetic response to provide seamless, natural sonic transitions.

High Performance Amp Unit

HS Series speakers employ an amplifier unit perfectly matched to the transducers utilized in each model of the series. Featuring a bi-amp design with a separate dedicated amp for both the woofer and the tweeter, this amplifier unit ensures that each HS Series speaker consistently delivers high-resolution sound with exceptionally flat response across the sound spectrum.

Controls and Connectivity

HS Series full-range models feature two response controls with detailed settings that allow them to adapt to the surface acoustics of rooms of varying shape and size. For inputs, HS full-range speakers can accommodate a wide range of balanced and unbalanced sources such as mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces with XLR and TRS phone jacks.

Low Resonance Enclosure Design

HS Series cabinets are designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosures are constructed from a very dense and resilient MDF with a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors.

Cutting Edge Noise Reduction

Speaker port design can greatly influence the clarity of overall sound. Often a vortex at the either end of the port can generate air vibrations inside of the port, causing unwanted noise. By adopting an advanced noise reduction technology that incorporates a thorough analysis of a visual representation of the sound, Yamaha's engineers are able to control and reduce the vortex.

New HS Install Versions

The new installation version of the renown Yamaha HS Studio Monitors include mounting points and screws for installation. Compatible with wall, ceiling, and baton brackets (sold separately.

User questions & answers

Question: I have the ddj sb3, what cord should i use to connect them
Answer: I’d use TRS or XLR cables. Looks like your equipment uses red and white aux cords
Question: Does a female xlr cord go into this
Answer: As the photo on the product page shows, you would plug the male end of an XLR cable into the monitor for balanced operation. The monitors follow the standard practice of having female XLR connectors as inputs, just as you would find on mixing boards and other studio equipment. Outputs generally have male XLR connectors. To accomodate this, standard XLR cables have a male connector on one end and a female one on the other. An unusual arrangement, should you ever encounter one, would require a non-standard cable or a gender-changing adapter.
Question: Is this the G
Answer: No
Question: Is this the price for just ONE of these
Answer: Yes. Just ONE. I thought it was for two, but no...just one.

LP-6W 6.5" Powered Studio Monitor - White

KALI AUDIO

Based on 77 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Accurate sound from your studio monitors no matter where they’re placed in the room.

For the aspiring music maker looking for a professional solution to mix their music and reference their tracks, Kali Audio's LP-6 Lone Pine 6.5-inch Studio Monitors are an excellent tool. This monitor is designed to deliver transparent sound for creators working across all genres and features Boundary EQ settings to optimize the speaker's response depending on where it is placed in your room. An advanced waveguide, large voice coil and precision tuning mean this monitor will sound great in any space.

The LP-6 audio monitor is designed so you can hear every detail of your mix. Nothing is boosted or suppressed to cover flaws in your tracks, so you will be able to mix with critical precision to mix with confidence and create incredible sounding finished productions. This detailed sound is, in a large part, owed to the monitor's 3-D Imaging waveguide. This waveguide allows you to hear a 3D soundstage from a stereo pair of monitors.

By matching the shape of the waveguide to the interactions of the high and low-frequency drivers, this waveguide produces a stereo image that is wider, taller and deeper than the space where the speakers are placed. The LP-6 accomplishes this by ensuring that the speaker's reflected sound matches its direct sound. Every time you hear a loudspeaker, you're hearing both the direct sound from the speaker and reflections from the speaker's signal bouncing off of objects in the room. When those reflections are congruent with the direct sound from the speaker, listeners perceive a better sound overall and are able to make out very subtle details like where microphones are placed in a room. When done well, the stereo image will be three-dimensional. This gives users a very high degree of confidence in their mix. It allows them to mix faster and produce better mixes overall.

  • 3D IMAGING WAVEGUIDE- Allows you to hear a 3-D soundstage from a stereo pair of speakers.
  • DUAL LAYER VOICE COIL- The voice coil on the LP-6 studio monitors allows the speaker to have very high excursion, resulting in clearer sound with lower harmonic distortion, and exceptional dynamic range.
  • LOW NOISE PORT TUBE- The LP-6 has the clean, punchy bass of a front-ported speaker with very low noise from the port tube.
  • BOUNDARY EQ- Kali Audio’s signature Boundary EQ settings help you achieve optimum sound in your recording environment while maintaining neutral sonic reproduction in a variety of settings.
  • HIGH OUTPUT AUDIO MONITORS- With 85 dB continuous output at 2 meters (roughly 6 feet,) and 20 dB of headroom, the LP-6 is plenty loud for almost every 1 or 2 person listening space. This includes home studios, editing bays, and most control rooms.

User questions & answers

Question: Would you suggest the factory foams are a better fit than buying a separate set of isolation foams
Answer: If you're talking about Windows media player, the answer is yes. I keep a file where i save all my mp3 music and drag and drop it into my media player. I think it then gets converted to its own format but the info and tracks remain.
Question: So what’s the deal with the hiss? Do they all do that or is it a setup issue? Can it be resolved
Answer: No, that input is used to play another audio source through your Aiwa. If you're looking to digitize old cassette tapes, the DigitNow does have a 1/8 audio plug. This can be plugged into the headphone jack on your Aiwa (depending on the headphone jack, you may need a 1/8 to 1/4" adapter) to transfer your music to your computer. You will need to keep the volume somewhat low, so the sound doesn't become distorted.
Question: Should i get these or the adams ax
Answer: 3ft or 36in
Question: Are these sold as a Pair or individually
Answer: Check on the Audacity wiki site online. There may be some information there to help with settings for your computer.

Every time you hear a loudspeaker, you're hearing both the direct sound from the speaker, and reflections from the speaker's signal bouncing off of objects in the room. When those reflections are congruent with the direct sound from the speaker, listeners perceive a better sound overall, and are able to make out very subtle details like where microphones are placed in a room.

When done very well, the stereo image will be three-dimensional. This gives users a very high degree of confidence in their mix. It allows them to mix faster, and produce better mixes overall.

ACCURACY

The single most important aspect of a studio monitor is its accuracy. A good studio monitor should present the material it’s playing faithfully, allowing you to make critical decisions that you know will translate to all the systems that your work will ultimately be played on.

POWER

Both models use 40W for the 1” soft dome tweeter. The LP-6 uses 40W for the 6.5-Inch woofer, and the LP-8 uses 60W for the 8-Inch woofer.

EASE OF USE

Combined with the LF and HF trims, our speakers sound their best no matter what room you’re mixing in, or where the speakers are placed. The RCA input can be set to -10 dBu sensitivity when you’re using consumer devices like a laptop or smartphone’s headphone jack.

Product description

A member of the T Series, ADAM Audio’s affordable line of professional 2-way active studio monitors, the T7V features a 7" polypropylene low-frequency driver that delivers bass extension down to an impressive 39Hz, while the company's U-ART accelerated-ribbon tweeter provides pristine highs extended up to 25kHz – quite remarkable for a monitor in this price range. The tweeter's broad, uniform dispersion pattern is assisted by a precision waveguide modeled on the High Frequency Propagation (HPS) waveguide used in ADAM’s premium S Series studio monitors, which provides an impressively wide sweet spot that liberates you from being constrained to a rigid listening position.

  • Active Vertical 2-way Nearfield Monit with 50W 7" Woofer 20W U-ART Accelerated-ribbon Tweeter (each)

User questions & answers

Question: this might be a dumb question, but does the woofer measure out to 6 inches? because i bought 7s and measured
Answer: You are measuring from the front and the remaining inch is hidden in the enclosure. If you take it apart it would measure 7.
Question: No optical input
Answer: No, there is no optical. The type of connections are listed on the Amazon page.
Question: Is this price per speaker, or per pair
Answer: per speaker
Question: q: 1.can the level be set to max while playing at normal/high volume?.. 2. Can these be left on over night, or for a long duration? Thank you
Answer: not sure, I do not set to MAX - I have each set slightly above 0db and then I control volume via an Apogee Duet for both music (iTunes e.g.) and playing (guitar, bass, vocals) - very happy with this set up I leave mine on a lot, no issues

User questions & answers

Question: can you leave the back on/off switch on all the time, using the volume knob to turn off and on
Answer: I have the speakers in my bedroom and measured the power consumption. The speakers consumes around 11-12 Watt while it's sitting in idle. The back side panel gets a little hot because of this power consumption. The front switch (volume knob) does not disconnect the power, judging by the back panel temperature. Only the back panel switch can truly disconnect power. A paranoia person wouldn't want to leave it on as it may take the worst possible path as components age. Now about the idling power consumption - it can be justified by a class A amplifier, which is supposedly providing better sound quality.
Question: Hello, what's in the box
Answer: two speakers, AC cable, RCA cable, 1/8"to RCA, interconnect zipline.two 1/8" input output holes on the front, with the volume control.
Question: The description says the dimensions are 8.5 x 15.3 x 11.5 inches, but for 3" speakers that would not match the image. What are the real dimesions
Answer: The actual round speaker that the sound comes from is 3 inches, but the entire cabinet (the entire black box) are the dimensions you listed
Question: I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but can these be used with a subwoofer
Answer: Absolutely. This is how connecting the Mackie's and a Polk PSW10 to a computer worked for me:1) Mini Jack into PC audio Card for surround speakers. (1 of 5 inputs) This used a mini jack to RCA cable which was included withe the speakers.2) Mini Jack into PC audio Card for Subwoofer. (1 of 5 inputs) This used a mini jack to RCA cable.* NOTE: If a person's computer only has one audio out, they simply use a splitter to make two audio outs.3) Set Computer Audio software for 2.1 Sound (Oddly, my software required setting to 5.1 with rear speakers off).4) Set Subwoofer volume knob to 1/2-3/4. Set the crossover to ~80-90Hz.5) Play music or a movie and set the monitor volume for a desired match with the Sub.Now that the sub and monitors match volume, don't touch the volume knob on the sub or the monitors. Just use your computer to adjust volume up/down. The sub has a sensor which will turn itself on/off. One monitor has a switch on the back to turn the pair on/off.
