9 best computer recording midi interfaces
A computer recording MIDI interface is a piece of hardware used in music production and recording to connect MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) instruments or controllers to a computer. This allows musicians, producers, and composers to record and manipulate MIDI data within digital audio workstations (DAWs) on their computers. Here's an overview of MIDI interfaces and their features:
Purpose and Functionality: MIDI interfaces facilitate communication between MIDI-enabled musical instruments, such as keyboards, synthesizers, and drum machines, and a computer. They allow users to record MIDI performances, control virtual instruments, and sequence musical notes.
Connection Types: MIDI interfaces can connect to a computer via various methods, including USB, MIDI ports (standard DIN connectors), FireWire, or Thunderbolt. USB MIDI interfaces are prevalent due to their ease of use and compatibility with most modern computers.
Number of Ports: MIDI interfaces come with multiple MIDI input and output ports, allowing users to connect multiple MIDI devices simultaneously. This is particularly useful in a studio setup where multiple instruments need to be connected.
Latency and Timing: MIDI interfaces are designed to minimize latency, ensuring that MIDI data is transmitted with minimal delay.Low latency is crucial for real-time performance and recording.
Compatibility: MIDI interfaces are compatible with various operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux) and DAW software. They usually come with drivers and software that aid in setup and configuration.
Power Source: MIDI interfaces are typically bus-powered through the computer's USB or other connection, eliminating the need for an external power supply in most cases.
Stand-Alone Operation: Some MIDI interfaces can operate independently of a computer, allowing MIDI devices to communicate directly with each other without the need for a computer.
Additional Features: MIDI interfaces may have additional features like MIDI merge, MIDI thru, and routing options, allowing users to route MIDI data efficiently.
Compact and Portable: Many MIDI interfaces are designed to be portable and compact, making them easy to carry and suitable for musicians who perform live or need a mobile recording setup.
MIDI interfaces play a crucial role in the modern music production process, enabling seamless integration of MIDI instruments and controllers with digital recording systems. They are indispensable tools for musicians and producers looking to create, record, and edit MIDI-based music.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a 2 meter USB 2.0 extension cable |
Answer: | I believe so |
Question: | I own a DGX 640 Yamaha keyboard. Is it possible to connect the USB port into the piano and the MIDI cables into a Steinberg UR22 USB Audio Interface |
Answer: | It's designed to go the other way and it works great for that but it may work with that configuration as well. I'm including the tech data for the keyboard that explains:Transmitting USB TO HOST Products' Output Data to 5-Pin MIDI Devices When attempting to send MIDI Data from a DTX / PSRE / PSRS / DGX or other electronic drum or keyboard product solely equipped with a USB TO HOST port to game systems, controllers or modules equipped with 5-Pin MIDI ports. The USB MIDI signal must first be routed thru the computer via MIDI Editing/Routing Software (such as a DAW - Digital Audio Workstation) capable of creating MIDI tracks. This scenario will be explored in the steps below.1) Click here to download and install the latest USB-MIDI Drivers for your computer’s Operating System to make sure the computer can recognize your USB TO HOST product as a MIDI Input/Output device 2) In addition to your keyboard or electronic drum set, you’ll need a MIDI to USB interface, like our UX16.Once the drivers for both components are installed and the computer recognizes both as MIDI Devices:Your USB device is the input and the USB to MIDI is the output device3) Open your DAW, and create a MIDI Track.4) In your MIDI Track, assign the input port to the DTX400 and the output port to your MIDI-USB Interface. Now, while the DAW is open, the MIDI output of the DTX400 module should be routed to the MIDI OUT port of the MIDI-USB Interface. |
Question: | Will this power devices that need midi power, such as 'midi solutions' products |
Answer: | It doesn't need any MIDI power, just plug and use. |
Question: | Can you use either the midi in or midi out |
Answer: | Yes you can, but keep in mind that the cords for this usb device appear to be labeled backwards, BUT they are actually the correct way. MIDI in should connect to midi out on the synthesiser because it is coming out of the synth and IN to the cable. Common misunderstanding when working with midi devices. |

Question: | Is the software disk or downloads |
Answer: | The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet! |
Question: | Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait |
Answer: | Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait. |
Question: | will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable |

Answer: | From the mixer to PC there are 4 channels and you can select to send M1, M2, M3, M4 or M1, M3, AUX, FX or M1, M2, L, R, where M1-M4 are mixer input mono channels 1 through 4, AUX and FX are the busses, and L/R are the main mix outputs. From PC to the mixer is less felxible. ST2 (mixer's stereo input 2) receives USB 1/2, but if you plug cable into to ST2 on the mixer USB 1/2 is disconnected and you cannot use USB 1/2. USB 3/4 always go mixer's ST3 channel. |
Question: | Does this work with USB 3.0 ports |
Answer: | Yes and 4. There are some limitations on what those four tracks are. The options are: 1) Ch 1, Ch2, Ch3, Ch4 2) Ch1, Ch2, Main L, Main R 3) Ch1, Ch2, Aux bus send, FX bus send It can sometimes take a bit of jiggery pokery to record exactly (and only) the bits you want. |

Question: | Does it work with os x catalina |
Answer: | He writes well! Your decency is required! Declared things do not match arrived! Declared things: 1) Remote control Zoom 12 Lieve 12 L-12 2) Headphones 3) Bag 4) four switching wires. Instead, the mixing console and SD card of 16GB of the lowest class came for 8-10 dollars! You are not the smartest and not the most cunning on this planet!!! You were obliged to ask me if your SD card suits me in exchange for the items you declared when selling! However you did not! I will never use your services again and advise your store !!! |

Question: | Does this work with mac os big sur |
Answer: | This is my only complaint that there is no power switch. I use a surge protector power strip to turn the power on and off. Other than this, this is a great board. |
Question: | Does it work with os x catalina |
Answer: | Yes, you can send the entire master L/R mix (post-fader) to two channels of USB. These show up in your DAW as USB inputs 13/14, I believe. But as you say, there is no option to send post-fader mix on a per-channel basis. My standard home-studio configuration is to send pre-fader signals to the DAW and use the mixer's on-board faders as a monitor mix. |
Question: | is this a (usb midi usb din converter) that will add 5 pin in/out midi ports externally to my new ctx 700 so i can send sound to old keyboard |
Answer: | Yes, it should have 10 different delay settings that you can select from. You can use this to mix karaoke by plugging in the mics to the XLR ports and the music source to the line inputs. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |

User questions & answers
Question: | does this pull up my piano arrangements on to sheet music i have music midi in out cable i have to get a 5 pin adapter |
Answer: | It will depend on your sound card's ability to drive the heavier load of the 80 or 250 ohm version. The higher the load, the more accurate your bass response and high end will be, so the 250 ohm will give the clearest "view" of where sounds are coming from, but only if your sound card can adequately drive them. If you are unsure, go with the 32 ohm, or pick up a headphone preamp that can drive the 250 ohm. |
Question: | I have only one midi out in my pedal controller but I have two midi guitar pedals that i want to controlled separatly. It is going to work with this |
Answer: | If you're using a source that cannot properly drive 250ohm you will notice a lack of bass and extreme high end, and a general muddy sound all around. A decend headphone preamp will fix this issue if you're using a low powered source; otherwise, your pair may be defective. If you do not have a preamp, or don't want to use one, the 32ohm or 80ohm model might be a better fit and should be roughly the same price. What source are you using? |
Question: | Does it have driver support for windows 8 64bit? if so, i might buy it |
Answer: | Check panning on your tracks and if you’re going thru groups make sure the Mono switch isn’t engaged. |
Question: | If i want to control 3 diffrent MIDI pedals with one foot switch is this the product I need |
Answer: | JOHN, IT'S BEEN AWHILE SINCE I OWNED THIS MIXER. IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY I THINK I USED A PLATE REV. WITH THE BUILT IN UNIT AND ALSO RAN A OFF BOARD LEXICON MX200. WITH THAT UNIT I RAN SOME ECHO AND DETUNE ALONG WITH THE BUILT IN REV. HALL VERBS ARE NICE SOUNDING AS WELL. YOU JUST HAVE TO EXPERIMENT WITH SOME DIFFERENT SETTINGS TIL YOU HEAR WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR. HOPE I'VE HELPED. GOOD LUCK. |
