12 best usb audio interfaces
USB audio interfaces are essential pieces of equipment used in the field of audio recording, particularly for home and project studios. These devices play a crucial role in connecting microphones, instruments, and other audio sources to a computer for recording and playback. Here's some information about USB audio interfaces:
Purpose: USB audio interfaces serve as a bridge between analog audio sources (like microphones and instruments) and digital audio software on a computer. They convert analog audio signals into digital data that can be processed, recorded, and edited on a computer and vice versa.
Connectivity: As the name suggests, USB audio interfaces typically connect to a computer via a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. This connection is straightforward and widely compatible with both Mac and Windows computers.
Inputs and Outputs: USB audio interfaces come with a variety of inputs and outputs. Common inputs include XLR and 1/4-inch jacks for microphones and instruments. Outputs often include 1/4-inch jacks and headphone outputs for monitoring. The number and types of inputs and outputs vary depending on the model.
Audio Quality: USB audio interfaces are designed to provide high-quality audio capture and playback. The audio quality is influenced by factors such as the interface's sample rate (measured in kHz) and bit depth (measured in bits). Higher sample rates and bit depths typically result in better audio quality, but they can also require more processing power and storage space.
Phantom Power: Many USB audio interfaces provide phantom power, which is necessary for condenser microphones to operate. Phantom power is typically selectable on individual channels and can be turned on or off as needed.
Monitoring: USB audio interfaces often include built-in headphone outputs and volume controls, allowing users to monitor audio in real-time without latency. Some interfaces also offer direct monitoring options, bypassing the computer for near-zero latency monitoring.
Software Compatibility: USB audio interfaces are compatible with a wide range of digital audio workstations (DAWs) and recording software. They may also come bundled with basic recording software to get users started.
Portability: Many USB audio interfaces are compact and designed for portability. This makes them ideal for musicians and audio engineers who need to record on the go or in different locations.
Price Range: USB audio interfaces are available at various price points, making them accessible to beginners and professionals alike. The cost often depends on the number of inputs and outputs, audio quality, and additional features.
Accessories: To complete a recording setup, users may need additional accessories like microphones, cables, and studio monitors. USB audio interfaces are a central component of such setups.
Overall, USB audio interfaces are versatile tools for musicians, podcasters, YouTubers, and anyone interested in recording and producing audio on a computer. They provide a reliable and convenient way to capture and manipulate high-quality audio for various creative endeavors.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use a USB headset with this |
Answer: | We found that if you have the GoXLR, and a USB headset, that we can still get the sound over. Put a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord from the headset output on the GoXLR, and into the Line In port on the back of a computer. Then, use the 'Listen to this device' option in the sound settings to redirect sound from 3.5mm Line In, and output to the USB headset. Can use a guide like https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/126383-listen-microphone-through-playback-device-windows.html to see the process. Couple things to note - If you hear a buzzing or feedback, you may need to get a quality 3.5mm Ground Noise Loop isolator, and be sure to get a quality 3.5mm cable, otherwise the sound may sound a bit degraded. |
Question: | Can i use this to get xbox audio through to my pc speakers |
Answer: | Yes, pretty easily I might add. |
Question: | Does this have phantom power for the xlr |
Answer: | Yes, it supports 70 Db of gain in addition to the phantom power. So it can run nearly and microphone you throw at it. |
Question: | Is this Mac compatible |
Answer: | Currently, windows only. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the software disk or downloads |
Answer: | The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet! |
Question: | Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait |
Answer: | Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait. |
Question: | will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable |
Answer: | It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt |
Question: | Hi, can i use this with fl studio |

Answer: | Hi Matt,Alesis support here! You can connect your phone from the headphone jack to any of the line-level inputs, and it will record alongside two XLR mics. If you have any other questions for me, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected]. |
Question: | What is the difference between the main out, and monitor out? Can I control two sets of speakers, and a headphone volume independently with this mixe |
Answer: | Think of it like a concert, Main Out is the speakers the crowd would hear. Monitor Out is the speakers turned backwards that the musicians hear. Headphone Out is what the producer behind the mixer listens to. And yes, you can control the volume on all three of those outputs independently from each other. |
Question: | I'm looking to do live mutitrack recording. does the usb interface send more then one stereo master track |
Answer: | Evening... I downsized from the Multimix 4 to a two-channel mixer, basically used for my audio book recordings. User questions & answers
Question: | It appears that phantom power gets switched on all 4 mic pres simultaneously. Can I use dynamic & condenser mics together without causing damage |
Answer: | Because the one in the front is NOT powered. The rear inputs can power mics or active pickups, up to 48v. I run 9v batteries in all my active guitars, so they're already powered, so I just run all my guitars into the front input. If I'm recording my 4x12 cab, I use the XLR in the back with my SM57. |
Question: | will this power a microphone that requires phantom power? sorry if this is a dumb question, im new to XLR microphones |
Answer: | Your question has me curious. The data speed for this device will not get close to the rates requiring a cable with the thunderbolt 3 type throughout. The audio stream will get there just as fast with their stock cable and with a reasonably priced ($6-10) usb type c cable. The nicer cables are more about throughput than latency. |
Question: | Can it write four tracks simultaneosly |
Answer: | Audio is routed from the computer through USB-C to Evo. There are two 1/4” outputs on the back of the Evo to plug into speakers. |
Question: | Does this include a usb power cable that goes from the interface to the computer |
Answer: | My interface remembers its gain settings when rebooting. Both when I power cycle the unit and when my computer power cycles. Make sure you download the most up to date drivers for it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is Reaper supported |
Answer: | Lets correct a few things. NO dynamic mics need Phantom power. And yes the power will reach the dynamic mics and generally that is OK. Also condensers that don't have batteries NEED phantom power. B123 managed a post with some serious misinformation. It is best not to send phantom to a dynamic because if the phantom is unbalanced a bit (broken cable, dirty pins etc.) you move the diaphragm of the capsule. So I wouldn't worry about it because the chance of actually doing damage is very small. The info on Ribbon mics is important to remember because Phantom will damage classic ribbon mics. I believe some of the modern ones have built in protections, but I wouldn't take a chance unless a manufacturer actually says their mic is safe on phantom power. |
Question: | When connected to windows through usb, do the drivers let me see each xlr pair as its own device in windows sound settings? i don't plan to use a daw |
Answer: | Phantom power is 48W to Condenser Microphones, i use MXL 990 Its nice and i enjoy work with my Berhinger UM2 and my Mic MXL |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | Keep in mind that this listing combines the UM2, UMC202HD, UMC204HD, UMC404HD, and UMC1820 onto a single page. So it is easy to confuse which unit you're talking about. The 404HDwill be able to send 4 discrete tracks to your DAW. The UM2 and 202HD can only do 2 tracks at a time. The 1820 can record up to 18 tracks when paired with an 8-channel ADAT preamp and a 2-channel S/PDIF preamp. |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | yes it comes with a USB cable, it gets the 48v phantom power through your USB port, 48 volts is basically 3 AA Batteries, so it's not like you need DC power |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this device be able to take a stereo signal, have it processed by a linux machine and then output the modified stereo signal to it's RCA outputs |
Answer: | If the device is plugged into the linux machine via the USB cable, it will do this for you. With this hookup, it will produce a 2 way signal, even simultaneously, 1 going into the computer, 1 coming out from the computer. If need be, it’s even capable of looping an output signal back in, say to a recording app on your computer. Just make sure you flip the little black monitor switch to the off position to eliminate distortion, and the signal looping back in will be crystal clear and strong. |
Question: | Do I need to buy a separate cable to use this product? I'm not really sure how the I/O system works. Can someone explain? Thanks |
Answer: | Not sure of your intended use for this product.I bought the UCA222 because the earphone jack on my Dell laptop went bad. It worked really well for my needs, it has a USB plug that connects to the standard USB port on my laptop. Then I connect my earphones to a standard plug on the device. No other cable required for me. |
Question: | Can you connect to a USB power supply and use the analog to S/PDIF output |
Answer: | I don't know about the S/PDIF but I suspect it won't work very well. I tried using the analog in to headphone jack using a USB power supply and it sounded terrible. I thought it would be a way around having to use a computer and it didn't work. Once I plugged the UCA222 into a laptop instead of a power supply it sounded way better. |
Question: | Can I connect 5 of these to get 10 independent audio output channels generated by the computer via usb |
Answer: | There's nothing technically preventing you from connecting 5 of these to get 10 independent audio outputs. If your software supports it, your computer will just see them as 5 individual audio cards. The problem your likely to run into is your computer does have a limit on how many USB devices can function simultaneously (USB Bandwidth). One way around this problem is to use a Quad USB PCI Card, that has 4 USB port and each one in it's own controller. The next thing you will need to consider is how many PCI lanes you have (will determine how many USB controllers your PCI bus can support) Hope this helps. |
