Frequently Asked Questions

Does the M-Track Eight require software drivers?

For an Apple computer running Mac OSX, no drivers are required. On a Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer, only one driver installation is necessary, found on the M-Audio Drivers/Updates page.

Will the M-Track Eight work with other DAW software?

Yes! Virtually any Mac OSX or Windows Digital Audio Workstation software capable of using USB audio interfaces will work with the M-Track Eight.

Can I use an external microphone preamp or direct box with the M-Track Eight?

Yes! When connecting an external mic preamp, direct box, or any other type of preamplifier to the M-Track, use a 1/4" TS or TRS type connector as this will bypass the M-Track Eight's internal microphone preamps. Only use an XLR type connection for microphones.

The LED lights on the front of the M-Track Eight do not light up all of the time. Have I set the levels properly?

To achieve optimum input levels, adjust the input gain while the source (microphone, instrument) is receiving the loudest signal. For example, have a vocalist sing through the loudest section of the song. At this loudest point, you should see one or two green LED lights. Drums and other percussive sources may occasionally display the yellow light. The red light indicates the input gain is set too high.

What value does each LED segment on the level meters signify?

The meters are calibrated relative to  0dBFS, which is the point of digital clipping.

They values are approximately as follows:

Red: -0.5dBFS

Amber: -3dBFS

Green1: -6dBFS

Green2: -20dBFS

Which output on the back do I connect my speakers to?

Connect your speakers or studio monitors to the MONITOR OUTPUT. This output will be controlled by the large MONITOR knob on the front panel. The other 8 outputs of the M-Track Eight are assignable from the outputs of your audio software (ex, Cubase LE7).

Are the inputs and outputs "Balanced" or "Unbalanced"?

All inputs and outputs on the M-Track Eight can accept both balanced and unbalanced line connections. Note that only XLR and TRS type connectors carry balanced signals, while TS and RCA type connectors are always unbalanced.

The sound from my Mac is very quiet, even when I turn the M-Track Eight up all the way! Is this normal?

Mac OSX has a separate, internal volume control. We recommend keeping this all the way up in your Mac's System Preferences > Sound > Output menu. On some Macs, you may also control the volume with the function keys on the keyboard.

The M-Track Eight is very warm to the touch. Is this normal?

Yes.  The M-Track 8 will be very warm during normal operation, but will not burn the skin when touched. Preamps of this design and quality require a good deal of juice to operate (19V 2.37A in this case).

User questions & answers

Question: whar is in the packge ? dose this include i lock and pro tools and cubes and ableton etc as its mention in avid site
Answer: These headphones are a completely standard 1/8th inch jack configuration. The only key difference is that the cord is easily replaceable with a male 1/8th inch to male 1/8 cord you can buy at any media supply store. There is no microphone. They will probably work listening to music if your iPhone has a female 1/8th inch jack for this purpose. Not all do. They will not work to return calls or answer calls due to the lack of a microphone. These headphones are really designed for dedicated use with iPod types of configurations.
Question: Can you connect two to get 16 XLR inputs like with the old M-Audio FW
Answer: buy another set
Question: Does this unit work with FL Studio
Answer: Please always hand wash all your knives. The dishwasher is hard on your knives whether they are ceramic, ceramic coated, etc. Your knives will have that nice new look when you hand wash. We use a variety of knives in our two kitchens and always hand wash. Good luck with your knives.
Question: If I were to plug in 8 mics, I could balance them all out first before plugging into the computer, correct
Answer: yes, they do, good knife set!

Question: Does the front panel volume control also work as a power switch, or do you need to reach around in back
Answer: I You can use more than one on tbe same computer, yes.
Question: is it normal that the right speaker play 50% lower volume
Answer: M-Audio support here! The M-Track Eight will work perfectly with FL Studio. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected].
Question: of my speakers play 80% lower than the other, changed cables and many songs still same problem, is this common
Answer: Yes the unit has an input volume controll for each channel. If that's the question? There are only 4 led lights per channel or track. 2 green 1 yellow & 1 red. I found with recording drums you can pin the yellow & bounce in the red with no clipping. Also I used Protools mixer to view the level & assigned the Compressor Limiter verry minimal to be sure no clipping occurd.

M-Audio Super DAC | Digital-to-Analog Converter with 1/4" & 1/8" Headphone Outputs (24-bit/192 kHz)

Based on 36 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The M-Audio Super DAC is the answer when you require reference-quality sound from your computer.

Super DAC is a USB digital-to-analog converter with stereo RCA analog outputs and both coaxial and optical digital outputs.

With audiophile-grade Wolfson DAC/ADCs, the M-Audio Super DAC performs 24-bit/192kHz high-definition audio conversion over a USB 2.0 connection. This results in the highest possible audio quality, which is critical for users who want to connect their audio equipment to their computer but are not satisfied with the sound quality of the typical computer sound card or the compression limitations of a Bluetooth connection. Six sampling rates between 44.1 and 192kHz are user selectable so you can achieve the exact performance level needed for any given circumstance.

This has a built-in high quality headphone amplifier with both 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch jacks, for connecting any headphones directly without the need for an adapter. It also features analog stereo RCA line outs and coaxial and optical digital output connections, so you can easily connect a wide array of external equipment. Since virtually all high-quality audio equipment has a digital input, Super DAC’s optical and coaxial digital outputs are perfect for driving that equipment with a pure digital signal—especially valuable since most computers do not have a digital output.

Super DAC is USB-powered or can use an optional AC wall adapter (not included).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I need a DAC?

A DAC, or Digital Audio Converter, is necessary to get an audio or music signal from a digital state, like a .WAV file on your computer, to an analog state, an electrical signal that can be played back with your headphones or speakers. Any music that exists on your computer, phone, tablet, or other device is already digital and will use some sort of a digital converter before it makes it to your ears. Any digital device with speakers or a headphone output will already have it's own form of DAC, but these often only cover the bare-minimum and can leave a lot to be desired. In comparison, music playback may sound dull and less defined.

Using an external DAC, like the Super DAC, is an easy way to upgrade the quality of audio playback from your device by providing superior conversion processing and higher sample rates.  The Super DAC features Audiophile-grade Wolfson conversion and sample rates up to 192 kHz, allowing you to get more precision and details out of your music and audio playback.

Does the Super DAC require any drivers?

The Super DAC is class compliant for Mac operating systems, but will require a driver for use with Windows. Please check for the latest system requirements on the product page and download the latest available drivers from our Drivers and Updates page.

What sample rates does the Super DAC support?

The Super DAC will support 24 bit, 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz. In order to change this, visit your Audio settings panel in your DAW or other software. If the software does not have this option, you can change the settings from your Windows or Mac Sound Preferences:

Windows:

  • Navigate to your Control Panel
  • Select Sound
  • Under the Playback tab, find the device labeled USB Audio DAC and double click on it
  • Find the Advanced tab
  • Use the drop-down menu to select your desired sample rate
  • Hit Apply and OK to exit

 Mac:

  • Navigate to your Applications folder and the then your Utilities folder
  • Find and open the Audio Midi Setup
  • If you do not see a window appear, click on Window at the top of your screen and select Show Audio Devices
  • Select the USB Audio DAC from the list on the left
  • Use the Format drop-down menu to select a new sample rate

What type of digital outputs does the Super DAC use?

The Super DAC has two digital outputs: S/PDIF Optical and Coaxial. These can be used to easily send a digital output from your computer via USB to a S/PDIF optical or coaxial input on a home stereo system or an audio interface. These connections can often be mistaken for other formats that use similar cables/connection types such as ADAT ports on an audio interface or an analog RCA port on a home stereo system. Be sure to check with your devices documentation to find out if it supports S/PDIF optical or coaxial.

Does the Super DAC support surround formats?

The Super DAC will only playback stereo files, but can pass-through Dolby 5.1 or DTS surround formats to be decoded and played back on your home stereo system.

Is the Super DAC supported for use on iOS?

Because the Super DAC is class compliant for mac, it will be supported for use on iOS but only with a power supply (sold separately) and an Apple certified Camera Connection Kit. The device may not receive enough power from the iPad/iphone alone, so the power supply ensures it will receive the proper amount of power.

What is the stereo input for?

The stereo input is included to allow you to connect a phone, tablet or other device to any speakers connected to the analog outputs. This way you can quickly switch between your sources without disconnecting anything. The switch labeled Analog/Digital on the front will switch between the USB/computer input (Digital) or the stereo input on the front (Analog).

This input will not be sent over the USB cable to be recorded onto your computer or iOS device.

Why are the headphone outputs different volumes?

The two headphone outputs on the front are designed with different impedance values to adapt more easily to the variety of headphone types available today. The smaller 1/8" (3.5mm) output is low impedance output that is suited better for consumer grade headphones (ipod headphones), while the larger 1/4" output is high impedance and better suited for high impedance headphones, typically studio or professional grade. If you are unsure which one you should use, check the documentation for your headphones. Impedance values would be measured in Ohms (Ω). Low impedance is typically less than 50Ω, and high impedance is more than 50Ω.

When referring to headphones, impedance is essentially the amount of resistance being applied by the device to the flow of the audio signal. For the best results, you'll want the impedance of the output device to match the impedance of your headphones. This ensures that the signal has enough pressure to be pushed through the system properly. For example, think of a garden hose. The nozzle on the end will represent your headphones.  When you close the nozzle, this adds impedance (like high impedance headphones) and creates pressure in the hose. Less water (signal) is able to get through. The more you reduce the impedance, the more you reduce the pressure in the system. Based on this scenario, if you were to attach your high impedance headphones to a low impedance output, the impedance level may be so high that the signal in the headphones is too low and you are unable to turn the volume high enough. Adversely, low impedance headphones in a high impedance output may not provide enough resistance, resulting in a very high output and potentially damaging the headphones from the amount of pressure.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the knob change the sampling rate on the digital outputs? If not what is the default rate or does it simply use whatever rate you have set in mix
Answer: It comes with a main cord you can connect to your computer as well as an additional aux cord and input. You can have your laptop and PC, phone and computer ETC and ETC. You don't need to buy any more cords
Question: Assuming you have good speakers, how much does this improve sound quality? Is it discernible
Answer: The switch is on the back. And I also use a dac to control the volume. https://www.amazon.com/Fosi-Audio-Converter-Headphone-Pre-Amplifier/dp/B07G2NQYLX
Question: Could you tell me which headphones do you use? is there much difference using head between notebook-pc dac and this m-audio dac? sorry for my english
Answer: No that is not normal. I would check your audio file to make sure it's not panned to one side, but generally they are neutral and equal.
Question: If I will connect speakers to both digital and analog outputs does it work at the same time
Answer: Most of the low end active monitors have pretty much the same problem at the low volume. I don't own the new M-audio series but I bought one pair of the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 several years ago for my son to use with desk top. He leaves it on 24/7 and to my dismay, the M-audio AV40 can last that long. At a very low level of listening, yes like any other cheap and disposable monitors the sound will notin balance ( not the same decibel) between the left and the right monitors.

User questions & answers

Question: will this work with win. xp sp
Answer: The knob controls volume exclusively. The sample rate that is seen along the side of it displays whatever rate you're currently at or have set it to within a program.
Question: Will this work with amplitube 4? Thanks in advance
Answer: I use this for a computer vs onboard sound. Its dead silent, no hiss, and convenient. I switch from headphones to a home theatre and it works great. Vs an onboard headphone amp of a souncard or motherboard or anotber dac you wont notice any difference in quality. Its not a super high end $1000 dac. Vs onboard sound of a motherboard its awesome. Its an alternative to a soundcard which is great.
Question: Will this device work with Linux (Ubuntu Studio
Answer: I'm currently using it with a set of 250-ohm beyerdynamic DT880s. It can drive them at least twice as loud as integrated sound on my desktop, though even that is plenty loud most of the time. I probably wouldn't use this amp for 600-ohm cans, but it should do fine with anything low to medium impedance. Sound is clear, and the noise floor is inaudible regardless of volume. Here are the main reasons you might want/need this (or any) DAC:1. Your computer/device can't drive your cans to sufficient volume (usually only the case when using > 100 ohm sets.2. Your computer/device's integrated DAC is defective or extremely low quality and has an audible noise floor, interference, excessive crosstalk, clipping at normal volume levels, etc.3. You want a hardware volume control and/or the ability to switch between headphones and speakers at the flick of a switch.4. You want to compensate for other shortcomings by buying expensive gadgets that you have no real need for.Note that while valuable for recording and post-processing audio, sample rates higher than 48khz provide essentially no added value or sound quality, and are simply marketing buzzwords. See http://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html for details.
Question: How long does M-Audio intend to support this device? Your company has a bit of a reputation for leaving customers high and dry by not updating drivers
Answer: The DAc does not have mixing capability nor anyway to to control playback speed and/or levels between audio sources. Also, the analog feed is simply a 1/8 inch cord running from the computer's headphone jack to a similar jack on the front of the unit. This bypasses the DAC completely and just allows use of the headphone amplifier. It is not a bad unit so far as use on with a computer goes but I would look at Sweetwater for something more professional if you want to do dual source playback. I know there are devices out there that are designed for the purpose and are not real expensive.

Question: I am going to transfer my vinyl from my stereo phono graph to my computer will this work
Answer: Hi, M-Audio support here! M-Track Solo is not suitable for direct connectivity with your phonograph. M-Track solo is suitable for receiving a mic, line, or instrument level signal. User questions & answers

Question: Does the used m-audio uber mic comes with the software as well
Answer: Highly unlikely. As driver support for that version of windows has stopped completely from microsoft itself. If it is going to work i think you would have quite the task ahead of you in order for it to work.
Question: What are the sampling rate and bits
Answer: M-Audio support here! Since the Amplitube 4 utilizes audio sources from sound cards or audio interfaces, it will work fine with the 2X2. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected].
Question: Is this better than vocal studio
Answer: M-Audio support here! Although we only support Windows and Mac operating systems with this interface, it is class compliant so it may work properly on an Ubuntu system. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected].
Question: Can I install a pop filter on the base of the microphone if I install the extra piece that comes with it
Answer: Hi Shadow HR,M-Audio support here! We don't anticipate the M-Track 2x2 being unsupported for some time. This is our most recent audio interface in our line, and the products that no longer have driver updates are items that were designed by AVID when they owned M-Audio. I hope this helps, but if you have any other questions, I'd love to answer them. Please feel free to email me directly at [email protected].

Sound Matters

A studio monitor is no ordinary loudspeaker. A true monitor must be unerringly accurate, with a flat frequency response and vanishingly low distortion. It has to tell you, the music producer dependably and unquestionably exactly what is or is not in your recording. Introducing M-Audio’s BX5-D3 monitors—the return of a studio icon and the successor to the industry-renowned BX-D2 monitors. Trusted by recording/mix engineers and composers globally, M-Audio’s BX monitors guarantee absolute surgical precision and repeatable engineering excellence - with M-Audio’s BX5-D3 studio reference monitors, listen with confidence.

Studio-Grade Drivers

A monitor’s drivers are the heart and soul of its performance. Driving the low-end and midrange, BX5-D3’s 5-inch military-grade Kevlar woofers are rigid and lightweight, delivering outstanding transient response whist negating unwanted 'cone breakup.

BX5-D3’s treated silk dome tweeter provides the perfect combination of low mass and the absence of audible resonances that plague conventional tweeters. Together, the BX drivers deliver critical detail, nuance and dynamic accuracy, so your mixes have the veracity and transparency you demand.

Its all in the Enclosure

With M-Audio’s BX5-D3, every detail has been meticulously engineered with one goal in mind - to facilitate the freedom to mix with confidence. BX5-D3 monitors have a rear-mounted bass port, precision engineered to the exact length and diameter. The result? Deep, defined bass response with maximum bass extension and resolution. BX5-D3’s tweeter is mounted in a custom waveguide for reliably accurate dispersion that eliminates unwanted high-frequency 'scatter,' whilst ensuring a wide and stable soundstage. Finally, BX5-D3’s iconic 'fastenerless' design on the front panel, ensures so there are no driver attachment screw heads to interfere with the sound coming from our drivers.

Class A/B Bi-Amplified Power

Efficient and accurate: Driving the BX5-D3 monitors are two Class A/B internal amplifiers that power the woofer and tweeter separately - each optimized for the specific frequency range it handles and engineered to complement the characteristics of its companion driver. A precision-tuned crossover guarantees each driver only handles the frequencies that it produces most efficiently for a sound that is cohesive across the entire frequency spectrum. Play louder with less audible distortion: The BX5-D3 bi-amplified design is a far more efficient and accurate way to power a loudspeaker than using a single full-range amplifier to drive multiple driver elements.

Tailor Made Sound

At M-Audio, we understand no two listening spaces are the same. Negate problematic bass frequencies and limit the impact of nuisance standing waves thanks to BX5-D3’s special acoustic space control for precise adjustment of BX5-D3’s sound output in line with your studio space.

Connectivity Covered

Whatever you needs, the BX5-D3 Studio monitors guarantee to assimilate into your existing setup with ease. Combining conveniently-located, rear-mounted XLR and 1/4-inch balanced inputs, BX5-D3 connects to virtually all studio equipment including mixers, interfaces and more.

Find The Sweet Spot

When monitoring, it is critical to source the ideal listening position (or 'sweet spot') between the two speakers for an optimized stereo image. The BX5-D3’s front-mounted positioning LED shines brightly when you’re located in the perfect listening spot, for accurate and reliable mix evaluations.

M-Audio Acoustic Guitar Effect Pedal, 16-bit / 48kHz (Micro DAC)

Based on 68 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Micro DAC is a USB digital-to-analog (DAC) converter with two outputs, one analog and one digital (optical).

It's ideal for converting the audio from your computer into a high-quality analog format without needing to carry anything larger than a flash drive.

The sound quality available from the typical headphone jack on a portable device or coming from the standard-issue soundcard found in virtually every computer leaves a lot to be desired. Micro DAC delivers a marked upgrade in sound quality, compared to just plugging your headphones directly into your unit's headphone jack. Use the 1/8-inch analog output to connect any headphones, and enjoy vibrant high-fidelity sound. There is a gain switch that boosts the signal level, so you can drive even high-impedance headphones to a robust loudness level.

And since virtually all high-quality audio equipment has an optical digital input, Micro DAC's optical digital output is perfect for driving that equipment with a pure digital signal - especially valuable since most computers to not have a digital output.

Micro DAC has a rugged aluminum housing and is USB-bus-powered.

Getting professional-quality audio from your computer couldn't be easier!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Micro DAC require any drivers?

The Micro DAC is class compliant with both Mac and Windows operating systems, meaning it does not require any additional drivers. Class-compliant devices are designed to use standard drivers that are built into the Mac and Windows OS. This makes the device quick and easy to setup.

How do I set this up on Mac/Windows?

Because the Micro DAC is class compliant, setting it up is as easy as selecting it as your playback device in your systems Sound Preferences. Here's a quick way to do that:

Windows
  • Navigate to your Control Panel
  • Select Sound
  • Under the Playback tab, find the device labeled USB Audio DAC
  • Click the Set Default button at the bottom of the window to select it as your playback device
  • HitOK to exit the window
  • Navigate to your System Preferences
  • Select Sound
  • Pick the Output tab at the top of your sound window
  • Find and select USB Audio DAC from the list of available output
 Mac

Alternatively on a Mac, you can also hold down the Option key and click on the speaker icon at the top right of your screen to select your input and output devices.

How do I adjust the volume?

The Micro DAC will be essentially replacing the sound card in your computer, so the volume will be adjusted the same way you would adjust volume when using the headphone output or built in speakers on your computer. Some laptops and computers will have volume up or down buttons available on the keyboard, but otherwise this can normally be adjusted by clicking on the speaker icon in the top right of your screen (Mac) or bottom right of your screen (windows) and using the slider to adjust the output volume.

What is the impedance switch for?

The impedance switch is used to adjust the output volume to compensate for headphones with high or low impedance values.

When referring to headphones, impedance is essentially the amount of resistance being applied to the incoming audio signal. So, headphones with a higher impedance value require more power in order to provide the same amount of volume as a pair of low impedance headphones.

For example, imagine a garden hose with a nozzle on the end. When the nozzle is mostly closed, you are applying resistance to the flow of water (impedance), and less water is able to flow through the hose. But if you turn up the flow of water, you can increase the amount of water that is able to flow through that point.

It's important to understand impedance in order to properly use the device with your headphones. Using the low impedance setting with high impedance headphones will result in low volume and possible some noise or hiss. Adversely, using low impedance headphones with the high impedance setting could cause distortion, overload, and potentially damage the headphones.

Low impedance headphones are much more common and consumer grade (apple earbuds), whereas high impedance headphones are professional grade. If you are unsure of the impedance value of your headphones, check with the manufacturer. Low impedance headphones are typically categorized by anything lower than 50 ohms (Ω) and high impedance is anything above 50 ohms (Ω).

What do I use the digital output for?

The Micro DAC includes a TS to RCA(S/PDIF) digital cable for use with a digital input on another device. This can be an easy solution to send the audio output of your computer to a stereo receiver with a digital coaxial or S/PDIF input.

It's important to note that although this does look like a common RCA cable, a connection type popular with most home stereo units, the signal is digital and not compatible with the standard AUX input on your stereo. This will require a specific digital input which will often be colored yellow and featured on it's own on the back of your receiver, TV or other device. Check with the manufacturer of your device to find out if it has any digital inputs for this use.

The digital output could also be used in a studio setup to send audio from one computer to a S/PDIF input on an audio interface or mixer.

What bit/sample rates will the Micro DAC support?

The Micro DAC will support up to a 16 bit/48 kHz bit/sample rate that will be adjustable from your computer's standard Sound Preferences. When using the digital output it's important to make sure that the sample rate matches the sample rate of the device to which you are sending the signal. Here is a quick way to change the operating sample rate of the Micro DAC:

Windows
  • Navigate to your Control Panel
  • Select Sound
  • Under the Playback tab, find the device labeled USB Audio DAC and double click on it
  • Find the Advanced tab
  • Use the drop-down menu to select your desired sample rate
  • Hit Apply and OK to exit
  • Navigate to your Applications folder and the then your Utilities folder
  • Find and open the Audio Midi Setup
  • If you do not see a window appear, click on Window at the top of your screen and select Show Audio Devices
  • Select the USB Audio DAC from the list on the left
  • Use the Format drop-down menu to select a new sample rate
 Mac
  • Navigate to your Applications folder and the then your Utilities folder
  • Find and open the Audio Midi Setup
  • If you do not see a window appear, click on Window at the top of your screen and select Show Audio Devices
  • Select the USB Audio DAC from the list on the left
  • Use the Format drop-down menu to select a new sample rate

User questions & answers

Question: Does the 192 version play lower resolution files also
Answer: Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. Our AIR|HUB interface does not feature any audio inputs however, this is achievable with our AIR 192|4 interface. I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan
Question: Has anyone tried this with an iphone or ipad using the usb adapter
Answer: I'm using it with FCPX but it operates outside FCPX as an alternative audio output for my Mac. So all apps play out through this. It gives you balanced audio so none of that hum you get with unbalanced. If you're using a Mac it's virtually plug and play. With PCs you might need a driver. Its Pro-Tools friendly so my assumption is that would be that it would work with Avid. If you email the manufacturer they'll get back to you within a few days.
Question: Does this increase sound volume over the standard headphone jack and soundcards from most laptops
Answer: Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. The software supplied with the AIR|HUB will be compatible with most other hardware and DAW's! Please note to check your system requirements and software support by visiting airmusictech.com - I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan
Question: Does this require drivers when using on a Mac with Sierra
Answer: Hello, If you are trying to record an instrument, you can not plug an instrument cable or mic cable directly into this box. However if you have a mixer with a usb output, you could plug the mixer inter the AIR Hub. What the AIR hub does have is multiple usb ins and great 1/4 inch stereo outputs for speaker systems. The two volume knobs serve well for using headphones and speakers. So for Bass guitar you will need more than this box. Cheers, Chris
