14 best audio interface recordings
Audio interface recordings refer to the process of using an audio interface to capture and digitize audio signals from musical instruments, microphones, or other sound sources for recording and production purposes. This topic is related to audio interfaces, computer recording, studio recording equipment, and musical instruments. Here's what you need to know about audio interface recordings:
Purpose:
- Audio interfaces are crucial components in modern recording setups, allowing musicians, producers, and sound engineers to connect instruments and microphones to a computer for high-quality audio recording.
Components of an Audio Interface:
- An audio interface typically consists of input channels (for connecting microphones or instruments), output channels (for sending audio to speakers or headphones), and conversion circuits that digitize analog audio into digital format and vice versa.
Connection Types:
- Audio interfaces can connect to computers via various interfaces, including USB, Thunderbolt, FireWire, and PCIe. USB is the most common and widely supported connection type.
Input Options:
- Audio interfaces offer a variety of input options, such as XLR, TRS, and MIDI connections, to accommodate different types of audio sources, including microphones, guitars, synthesizers, and MIDI controllers.
Sample Rate and Bit Depth:
- Audio interfaces allow users to select the sample rate and bit depth for recording. Higher sample rates (e.g., 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz) and bit depths (e.g., 16-bit, 24-bit) offer better audio quality but result in larger file sizes.
Latency:
- Low-latency performance is essential for real-time monitoring during recording and mixing.Modern audio interfaces often include features like direct monitoring to minimize latency.
Software Integration:
- Audio interfaces come with software drivers and often include digital audio workstation (DAW) software integration to facilitate recording, editing, and production tasks on a computer.
Multi-Channel Recording:
- Some audio interfaces offer multiple input channels, allowing for simultaneous recording of multiple instruments or microphones, which is particularly useful in studio environments.
Portability:
- Portable audio interfaces are designed for musicians and producers on the go. They are compact and often bus-powered, making them suitable for field recordings and mobile setups.
Compatibility:
- Audio interfaces are compatible with various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, and are often compatible with a wide range of recording software.
Quality and Price Range:
- The quality and price of audio interfaces can vary significantly. Higher-end interfaces tend to offer better audio quality, lower latency, and more features, but they come at a higher cost.
Studio Recording and Music Production:
- Audio interfaces are essential tools in professional studio recording and music production, ensuring that high-fidelity audio is captured and processed during the creative process.
In summary, audio interface recordings involve using dedicated hardware (audio interfaces) to connect analog audio sources to a computer for recording and production purposes. These interfaces play a crucial role in achieving high-quality audio recordings and are fundamental tools for musicians, producers, and sound engineers in various recording and music production scenarios.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

Question: | Is it normal for every little touch of the mic or mic stand or wires or interface to be picked up loudly in the recording |
Answer: | Different mics pick up differently. |
Question: | Will this work on a macbook pro 2012 (non retina) on the thunderbolt 2 connector, using an apple usb-c -> thunderbolt2 adaptor and thunderbolt2 cable |
Answer: | It should but use the cable that's included |
Question: | Which of the Studio models, if any, can actually drive 250 ohm headphones? The 24c, sadly, did not |
Answer: | Not sure you are going to find a USB interface that will work those. Those are a very narrow use case style of headphones. I know that are marginally better for listening due to the damping effect. However, for recording and mixing a better choose would be a reference (flat EQ) design like the Sony MDRV6 headphones. |
Question: | Will this presonus iostation 24c 2x2 usb-c audio interface work with bandlab cakewalk daw |
Answer: | Yes. It uses standard usb drivers so if it works with your computer, it should work with any up to date software. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It appears that phantom power gets switched on all 4 mic pres simultaneously. Can I use dynamic & condenser mics together without causing damage |
Answer: | Because the one in the front is NOT powered. The rear inputs can power mics or active pickups, up to 48v. I run 9v batteries in all my active guitars, so they're already powered, so I just run all my guitars into the front input. If I'm recording my 4x12 cab, I use the XLR in the back with my SM57. |
Question: | will this power a microphone that requires phantom power? sorry if this is a dumb question, im new to XLR microphones |
Answer: | Your question has me curious. The data speed for this device will not get close to the rates requiring a cable with the thunderbolt 3 type throughout. The audio stream will get there just as fast with their stock cable and with a reasonably priced ($6-10) usb type c cable. The nicer cables are more about throughput than latency. |
Question: | Can it write four tracks simultaneosly |
Answer: | Audio is routed from the computer through USB-C to Evo. There are two 1/4” outputs on the back of the Evo to plug into speakers. |
Question: | Does this include a usb power cable that goes from the interface to the computer |
Answer: | My interface remembers its gain settings when rebooting. Both when I power cycle the unit and when my computer power cycles. Make sure you download the most up to date drivers for it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use a USB headset with this |
Answer: | We found that if you have the GoXLR, and a USB headset, that we can still get the sound over. Put a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord from the headset output on the GoXLR, and into the Line In port on the back of a computer. Then, use the 'Listen to this device' option in the sound settings to redirect sound from 3.5mm Line In, and output to the USB headset. Can use a guide like https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/126383-listen-microphone-through-playback-device-windows.html to see the process. Couple things to note - If you hear a buzzing or feedback, you may need to get a quality 3.5mm Ground Noise Loop isolator, and be sure to get a quality 3.5mm cable, otherwise the sound may sound a bit degraded. |
Question: | Can i use this to get xbox audio through to my pc speakers |
Answer: | Yes, pretty easily I might add. |
Question: | Does this have phantom power for the xlr |
Answer: | Yes, it supports 70 Db of gain in addition to the phantom power. So it can run nearly and microphone you throw at it. |
Question: | Is this Mac compatible |
Answer: | Currently, windows only. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the output jack in the front passthrough audio from your computer as well or does it only output the input signal for monitoring |
Answer: | Yes. It has phantom power. It will also work with any none phantom power condenser mic. |
Question: | Is there live monitoring? And can i turn it on and off |
Answer: | It gets 2-4 hours of battery life normally unless you use the 48db boost as when you are using unpowered professional mics. With that activated I would guess about 60-90 minutes. If you use that a lot you better plan on having spare batteries. Monitor your audio too as the last couple of minutes before it shuts off is not very useable. |
Question: | Do i need a pre amp for vocal mic? also i currently use pod by line 6. does this have something similar |
Answer: | Yes. The unit will be connected by usb, Or also as a standalone controller. Hope This Helps. |
Question: | Is the trs line input on the audio 1 balanced? I already have a mic pre amp and would like to bypass the amp. I don't want to degrade sound quality |
Answer: | yes there is, is programable |

Class-A D-PRE mic preamps
The UR-C series features D-PRE preamps, offering stellar recording quality unmatched in this class of products.

Our UR-Cs are compatible with all major audio software supporting the ASIO, Core Audio or WDM standard, providing a fully integrated, DSP-based monitoring setup wherever you are and with whichever DAW you use.
Monitor modes
The UR24C has two separate, switchable monitor modes: DAW and DJ. In DAW mode – used for producing music with a DAW, such as Cubase – you can adjust the balance of the signals coming from the DAW and from the UR24C’s inputs. In DJ mode – optimized for performances with DJ software or backing tracks – you can choose to either output the mono master sound to the right side of your headphones, with the mono cue sound to the left, or have both in stereo and mix the two.
Latency-free monitoring with DSP effects
With built-in DSPs, UR-C interfaces provide zero-latency monitoring with effects for every DAW, with straightforward control of all routings and settings.
