10 best audio computer interfaces
An audio computer interface, often referred to as an audio interface, is a critical piece of equipment in the realm of computer recording, studio recording, and musical instrument production. These interfaces serve as a bridge between analog audio sources (such as microphones and instruments) and digital audio recording software on a computer. Here's what you need to know about audio computer interfaces:
Purpose: Audio interfaces are designed to convert analog audio signals into digital data that can be processed and recorded by a computer. They also convert digital audio from the computer into analog signals for playback through speakers or headphones.
Connectivity: These interfaces come with various input and output options, including XLR, TRS, and RCA connectors for connecting microphones, instruments, and speakers. Some also offer MIDI connections for musical instruments and controllers.
Audio Quality: The quality of audio interfaces can vary significantly. Higher-end interfaces often offer better audio quality with features like high-resolution converters and low-latency performance. This is crucial for professional studio recording and music production.
Preamps: Many audio interfaces include microphone preamplifiers (preamps) that provide clean gain to microphone signals. High-quality preamps can significantly impact the recording quality.
Sample Rates and Bit Depths: Audio interfaces support various sample rates and bit depths, which determine the resolution and fidelity of audio recordings. Common sample rates are 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, with bit depths of 16 or 24 bits.
Latency: Low-latency performance is crucial for real-time monitoring and recording without noticeable delays. Some audio interfaces come with specialized drivers to minimize latency.
Inputs and Outputs: The number of inputs and outputs varies among audio interfaces. Smaller interfaces may have 2 inputs and 2 outputs, while larger ones can have 8 or more inputs and outputs, making them suitable for multi-track recording.
Phantom Power: Many audio interfaces offer phantom power, typically +48V, which is required to power condenser microphones and certain other studio equipment.
Monitoring Options: Audio interfaces often provide headphone outputs and monitor outputs with volume control, allowing for flexible monitoring setups.
Software Compatibility: It's essential to ensure that your chosen audio interface is compatible with your recording software and operating system. Many interfaces come bundled with digital audio workstation (DAW) software.
Portability: Some audio interfaces are designed for mobile use and are compact and bus-powered, making them suitable for recording on the go.
Price Range: Audio interfaces are available at various price points, ranging from budget-friendly options for beginners to high-end professional-grade interfaces.
In summary, audio computer interfaces are indispensable tools for musicians, producers, and recording enthusiasts. They serve as the intermediary between analog audio sources and digital recording software, providing the necessary conversion and connectivity options for high-quality audio recording and production. The choice of an audio interface should align with your specific recording needs and budget.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

Question: | Are you able to monitor the output through the computer or do you need to have headphones plugged into the box itself |

Question: | does this work with fl studio |
Answer: | Yes, works well with FL Studio! No latency, after setting up drivers. |

(You can also deactivate them on a computer as well to keep your activations down to five.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the software disk or downloads |
Answer: | The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet! |
Question: | Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait |
Answer: | Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait. |
Question: | will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable |
Answer: | It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt |
Question: | Hi, can i use this with fl studio |
Answer: | Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. I can confirm the AIR 192|4 interface in this package will be suitable as an audio interface for FL Studio! I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this to connect a bands instruments, bass, guitar, and vocals to the computer and record them all live at the same time |
Answer: | Yes. Up to 4 instruments can be mixed into a stereo output that can go to stereo headphone and EITHER 2 speakers, a PC via a USB2 cable or to another device via Bluetooth wirelessly. There is a digital selector in top center. The USB2 can apparently also be used as input as there are playback control buttons as well. Have not tested. Note that the 2 odd looking inputs in the upper left corner are intended for mics and can take either XLR 1/4" phone plug connectors. |
Question: | Can this plug directly into an iPhone using a usb to lightning adapter to record using the iPhone |
Answer: | Hi, unfortunately no. You have to connect the mixer to a laptop or computer. Please check the video link below. Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHc2s9Wg9ns |
Question: | is it plug and play |
Answer: | Yes just plug and play. I used it twice on streaming. It's very good machine. |
Question: | Does this mixer has a built in sound card or will I have to use an external one if I want to records with condenser mic |
Answer: | The instructions say that it includes a built in sound card; however, no matter what I do, I cannot get any microphone to cooperate with this mixer to record on a PC. While I plug and unplug the cable, feedback will record, but no voice will travel from the mic through the mixer and into the PC. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is Reaper supported |
Answer: | Hello, Yes, you can use the Scarlett 18i8 (3rd Gen) with Reaper. Best regards, Jay Lilley // Focusrite Technical Support Engineer |
Question: | When connected to windows through usb, do the drivers let me see each xlr pair as its own device in windows sound settings? i don't plan to use a daw |
Answer: | Hello, Yes this is possible in Windows. To expose additional channels from your Scarlett interface to non-ASIO applications (e.g. Skype, Discord, Zoom, Audacity) first click the Focusrite Notifier icon in the taskbar, then click "Expose/Hide Windows Channels": Best Regards, Anthony // Focusrite Support |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | The biggest change is in the headroom. These preamps and converters are cleaner and offer more gain than the 2nd gen. These pres also come equipped with the "Air" mode which adds some high end to model the ISA preamp circuit. The 3rd gen 18i20 also has 16 ADAT I/O channels as opposed to the 2nd gen's 8 channels of ADAT. The removable ears also help with portability for the engineer who doesn't want to keep the interface in a rack. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | Hi, There have been several improvements made to the 3rd generation range of interfaces. Firstly, all of the inputs on the 18i20 3rd gen feature Air mode, emulating the classic sound of our original transformer-based ISA preamps. Secondly, the 18i20 3rd gen now has the ability to switch between Main and Alternative speakers connected to it using a front panel button. Thirdly, we have added a built-in Talkback function (allowing the engineer to talk directly to the performer), a Loopback function (allowing audio from one application to be recorded into another without connecting cables), Dual ADAT ports for recording 16 channels of audio into the DAW at 96kHz, optical S/PDIF and removable rack ears. Lastly, the specifications of the preamps and conversion have been improved even further - for example, the dynamic range has been increased to 111dB and the gain range is now 56dB instead of 50dB on the 2nd generation. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the usb cable come with it |
Answer: | My husband is 5"11 215lbs. He wears a large shirt normally but I'm glad we ordered an xl. It's the perfect length for his torso and fits nice and snug. So order up atleast one size of your T-shirt size if you have a long torso. |
Question: | Does the usb cable come with it |
Answer: | A general suggestion .... pick one size less than u usually wear... this needs to be tight in ur skin and not loose as ur shirt |
Question: | is it have direct monitor when i recording |
Answer: | I have. Some night I'm just fine, some nights it bothers me as I get really hot. Then I have to take it off. |
Question: | Will this work in window |
Answer: | For contrast, I'm 6'3" about 235, and I sent the Large back because it was too tight. The XL is even more snug than I was expecting, but I'm going to stick with it. |
