11 best microphones for live vocals

Microphones for live vocals are essential tools for musicians, singers, and performers who need to amplify their voices during live performances. These microphones are specially designed to capture vocals with clarity and durability, even in high-volume and high-energy stage environments. Here's what you need to know about microphones for live vocals:

  1. Dynamic Microphones:

    • Dynamic microphones are the most common choice for live vocal performances. They are robust, resistant to feedback, and can handle high sound pressure levels (SPLs) without distortion.
    • They are typically less sensitive than condenser microphones, making them ideal for capturing loud and dynamic vocal performances.
  2. Cardioid Pickup Pattern:

    • Most live vocal microphones feature a cardioid pickup pattern, which focuses on capturing sound from the front while minimizing feedback and noise from the sides and rear.
    • This pattern helps isolate the performer's voice and reduce the chances of picking up unwanted stage noise.
  3. Durability:

    • Live vocal microphones are built to withstand the rigors of touring and stage use. They often have rugged construction, metal grilles, and shock-resistant designs to minimize handling noise.
  4. Handling Noise Reduction:

    • Many live vocal microphones incorporate features like shock mounts or internal suspension systems to reduce handling noise when the microphone is held or mounted on a stand.
  5. Sensitivity and Clarity:

    • While dynamic microphones are generally less sensitive than condenser microphones, they are designed to capture vocals with clarity and presence.
    • These microphones often have a tailored frequency response to emphasize vocal frequencies and provide a warm and clear sound.
  6. Wired vs.Wireless:

    • Live vocal microphones are available in both wired and wireless configurations. Wireless options provide greater mobility for performers but require batteries and a reliable wireless system.
  7. Popular Models:

    • There are several well-known and widely used live vocal microphone models, such as the Shure SM58, Sennheiser e835, and Electro-Voice RE20. These microphones are trusted choices for many live performers.
  8. Accessories:

    • To enhance live vocal microphone performance, accessories like microphone stands, windshields, and pop filters are often used to prevent plosives and maintain consistent microphone positioning.
  9. Feedback Control:

    • Proper microphone technique and stage monitoring are essential for preventing feedback issues when using live vocal microphones. Sound engineers may use equalization and feedback suppression tools to further control feedback.

In summary, microphones for live vocals are designed to meet the specific needs of performers on stage. They prioritize durability, feedback resistance, and clarity to ensure that vocal performances are heard clearly in live settings. Choosing the right live vocal microphone depends on the performer's style, the type of music, and personal preferences, but many professionals rely on dynamic microphones with cardioid pickup patterns for consistent and reliable results.

Long associated with its unmistakable sound and unsurpassed reliability, the Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone is widely considered the most popular mic in the world. Designed for professional vocal use in sound reinforcement and studio recording, the Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone utilizes a highly effective, built-in, spherical filter that minimizes wind and breath pop noise while the cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes unwanted background noise. The tailored vocal response on the SM58 is a legendary tone that has become a world standard. Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone Features: Smooth, mid-frequency presence rise for world-famous SM58 Mic sound, Uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source, Minimizes background noise, Pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise, Rugged construction for extreme reliability in demanding applications, Effective, built-in spherical wind and pop filter, 50 to 15,000 Hz frequency response, Supplied with break-resistant stand adapter which rotates 180 degrees, Legendary Shure quality, ruggedness, and reliability, Includes a mic stand adapter and a zippered storage pouch, Proximity Effect: When the sound source is less than 1/4 inch from the microphone, the microphone boosts bass frequencies (by 6 to 10 dB at 100 Hz), creating a warmer and richer bass sound than when farther away. This effect, known as proximity effect, happens only in unidirectional dynamic microphones like the Shure SM58 Vocal Mic. The low-frequency roll-off on the SM58 provides greater control, allowing the user to take full advantage of proximity effect.

User questions & answers

Question: I apologize for my ignorance. Need for my church. Does this run on battery alone or does it have to be hooked up to something to work
Answer: I have the AT2020USB+ version of this mic, it's USB and it has a blue light.I am buying this XLR version to run through my USB interface like my guitar does, so the sound is only coming from one device.
Question: How long is the cable that I can get with this mic
Answer: Hi,Yes, it has the three-prong XLR connector. I
Question: What amplifier or mixer [ $20- $50 ] should i buy which is compatible with sm58 ? need suggestion
Answer: If you use a conversion box, yes. This specific model uses an XLR interface because it requires phantom power (three prong, cylindrical shape). You can spend about $100 on a usb conversion box and use this model. I Use an AKAI professional ($250+) which can handle up to 4 mics and 4 outputs ALONG WITH the usb cable. All that said, you can bypass the whole thing and buy an "AT2020 USB". It hooks directly up to the laptop and there's no other equipment to buy. Warning: If you use an AT2020 USB, it will eat up your battery life, you NEED to have your machine plugged in to use it for a long duration. Reason is: the mic takes about 40 volts of power and audio recording and engineering is a processor intensive task (more CPU work = more power being consumed), it also takes a lot of memory so your HDD will be running non stop.If you're using this for fun, get the USB and save the money. If you're looking to get into more serious work, use the XLR as it's compatible with more high end equipment.
Question: Feel free to laugh a bit and excuse my ignorance. I am starting voice lessons does this microphone only work with a computer? Or can I hook it up to something different? Ok no more laughing. Thank You
Answer: No, it does NOT come with an XLR cable or a stand.

User questions & answers

Question: I'm trying to decide between this mike, the SM48 and the PG 58. I would like the best mike for a band, short of the SM
Answer: I assume it's for a vocal mike? I do not know about the PG 58, but I can tell you the SM48 is flawless. Absolutely no problems so far. Shures are tanks when it comes to mics. I'd still go with the SM58 if you can get your hands on one cheap. I have never heard of a problem with them. I have seen vocalist throw them to the ground and they still work the same. Hope that helps.
Question: Help! Which speaker can connect to this mike
Answer: You can plug a Shure SM48 or Shure SM58 to hundreds of speakers, which is why they're the world's most popular, universal microphone (every performing musician I've known and every band carries a reliable and indestructible SM58 mic). It works with "performer's" speakers, which have a built-in amp and pre-amp. Examples are Peavey, Bose, JBL, Electrovoice, etc. I happen to use Roland piano speakers and Roland Cube speakers, but any P.A. system is likely to have the conventional XLR speaker's connection as well as the ¼ inch connection should you have a plug at the end of your cable (the SM58 will take either cable). The problem comes into play if you're limited to an indoor stereo system with "hi-fi speakers," which are not self-powered like musicians-performer's speakers. This is a performer's mic, the one you'll see in use for P.A. speakers in large rooms and big outdoor areas-- and musician's amp-speakers (for all those electric pianos). But it requires an XLR or quarter-inch phone plug connection. If you wish to use it as a USB speaker with your computer, Amazon is showing it with the the Shure X2U adapter ($100), which will convert an XLR cable into a USB cable and provide conveniences like a headphones jack (for no-latency monitoring) and control of volume as well as 48V Phantom Power (which is not needed with the SM48/58, since both are dynamic mics, not condenser mics). If yours is a non-USB condenser mic (eg. ATT2020), the Shure adapter could take the place of a mixing board-interface, saving money and space while giving you all the flexibility you need with a single mic used like a USB accessory to connect to a computer. Blue makes the same for half the price (the Icycle?), but with fewer onboard controls and questionable durability (my Blue mics, incl. the Yeti, are the first to break or wear out). Also, check Planet Waves for some of the plainest, cheapest (less than $10) adapters.
Question: What type of connector does it use
Answer: The output on the mike is xlr style but if that's a probly you can buy an xlr to 1/4 converter for a few bucks
Question: what 10watt will work well with sm48s
Answer: sauteed Broccoli de rabe with a side of minced meat couscous

User questions & answers

Question: can it be handheld
Answer: Yes it can. The only bad thing about this mic is it is made of plastic. But over all it sounds great.
Question: IS this made of cheap plastic that will strip easily
Answer: We actually used ours for a music video but the quality of the microphone was great! I didn't see it as cheap at all, and not plastic!
Question: What stand should i use or does it come with one
Answer: It doesn't come with a stand, but you can use a regular stand
Question: Can we plug the mic to a computer
Answer: Yeah my brother has this paired with the focusrite solo, Which has a usb connector you put into your pc. You plug your xlr into it and con monitor it directly with gain, and it's good if you plan on upgrading from this mic in the future.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this microphone wireless
Answer: This one is not wireless You need to purchase a mic cable too It is not included They make a wireless version but this is not it
Question: Can anyone give a realistic assessment of how much better it is at resisting feedback than other mics? If not, any recommendations for one that does
Answer: I haven't found it to be any better or worse at resisting feedback. The SM58 Beta is better than the SM58 in a few areas, but I haven't noticed it being better in this specific regard.
Question: Does this mic need phantom power of 48V
Answer: Hello, This microphone does not require phantom power, as it is dynamic.Phantom power is required for condenser microphones, such as Shure Beta 87A.
Question: Is this a real Beta 58 or is it the ripoff from China
Answer: Good question. I can only tell you that the one I received is real. The mesh grill on the AUTHENTIC SHURE mic almost looks "spider web" like. The links are intertwined - the FAKE SHURE has a regular metal screen. The AUTHENTIC SHURE mic has a DEEP BLUE colored ring (not DARK BLUE!) around the grill. The FAKE one has like a "SKY BLUE" Also, at the BOTTOM of the mic, where the XLR pins are, the REAL SHURE mic will have the pins numbered "1, 2 and 3" and ALSO have the SHURE LOGO embossed on the base by the pins. The FAKE MICS will NOT. Hope this info HELPS.

    User questions & answers

Question: is there any delay when monitoring ur voice while recording
Answer: No different than any other microphone. It's just a basic dynamic mic in a nice retro design. That said, it's highly sensitive to plosives so I'm not sure how well it would do for recording. I use mine for live performance and I have to be careful of my p's and b's.
Question: Does it come in red
Answer: You can buy a can of red paint for like a dollar.
    Question: como contactar al vendedor
    Answer: si
Question: Does it come with a stand? If not, what kind of stand should I look for
Answer: No, this product does not come with a stand. To my knowledge, no professional mic comes with a stand. Regarding what type of stand to buy, While the attachment that holds the mic may be different, I believe that all mic stands are uniformly one size. This particular PYLE microphone screws on to the mic stand.

  • User questions & answers

Question: Do you need cloudlifter for mxl-bcd
Answer: It's a yes and no. Most of podcasters who use MXL BCD-1 don't use a Cloudlifter because their audio interface is more than enough. You may need one though if your audio mixer/interface has low-quality preamps. A crappy preamp can introduce a lot of noise into the audio signal.
Question: Does this mic screw onto a tripod mic stand
Answer: Yes, you can attach the MXL BCD-1 Microphone onto a tripod mic stand. Kindly get in touch with MXL at techsupport[at]mxlmics[dot]com or 800~800~6608 / +1~310~333~0606 for the list of compatible tripod stands.
Question: Does the mic come with the protective case
Answer: The MXL BCD-1 Dynamic Microphone comes with the MXL WS-002 Mic Windscreen only.
Question: Will this hook up to zoom h
Answer: The Zoom H6 has XLR inputs so yes the microphone cable will plug into it. The Zoom H6 also has a thread on its back that should allow a mic stand/arm to fit and hold it, perhaps with a thread adapter.

    User questions & answers

Question: What is the capsule in this
Answer: Yes, I have been podcasting with this since I got it and it works beautifully.
Question: What size screw does this accept for attaching to a stand? 3/8", 5/8", or
Answer: I don't like the ECHO effects at all. My $100 Costco Karaoke has better ECHO effects. Is there another mixer with better ECHO or is it the speakers ?
Question: is this uni or omni directional
Answer: Lets correct a few things. NO dynamic mics need Phantom power. And yes the power will reach the dynamic mics and generally that is OK. Also condensers that don't have batteries NEED phantom power. B123 managed a post with some serious misinformation. It is best not to send phantom to a dynamic because if the phantom is unbalanced a bit (broken cable, dirty pins etc.) you move the diaphragm of the capsule. So I wouldn't worry about it because the chance of actually doing damage is very small. The info on Ribbon mics is important to remember because Phantom will damage classic ribbon mics. I believe some of the modern ones have built in protections, but I wouldn't take a chance unless a manufacturer actually says their mic is safe on phantom power.

    User questions & answers

Question: can conect this mirophone to me pc with xlr to 3.5mm adapter or need a mixer or interface
Answer: You could, but it likely wouldn't sound great. If you're buying a microphone like this, you'd really want to have some sort of interface with a decent mic preamp built in. Something like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, or the ART USB Mix Project Series Mixer would do the trick. You'd be much, much happier with the results if you went through something like that. Most built in 3.5mm connectors on computers are connected to very bad preamps and very bad converters that are usually noisy and sound pretty terrible.
Question: If one put this mic on a desk stand, would it pick you up good sitting up without having to lean in to it? (think johnny carson or david letterman
Answer: If you're looking at this mic thinking about podcasting or youtube this mic will work fine and its dynamic nature should help tame room noise. But, dynamic mics like to be used close to the source so you'd be better off with it on a boom so you can keep it close to your mouth. The mics on the desk of most talk show host are props. The host and guest are recorded by techs using mics on boom poles who can change the position when people move around. Watch how Joe Rogan, Howard Stern, ect., use their mics in studio to get an idea.
Question: What is the weight of this mic
Answer: It's very light, I had one for about a week before I sold it to the next poor fool. This mic sounds pretty terrible. You want a flashy stage mic, just spend that little bit more and get yourself one of the Shure 55 models.
Question: Would this be good for twitch streaming for gaming? would be using it with a goxlr mini
Answer: It would. However as a directional mike it might not produce as well as the typical headset mike. Assuming the player is moving a lot. We bought 2 for our radio station and use them for vocal performances. Sounds beautiful. Full & Rich and looks great!

    User questions & answers

Question: Can we connect this to garage band-MacBook through usb
Answer: No, this mic has a standard XLR connection -- meant to connect to your computer via a USB audio card or mixer.
Question: I wonder if he has is original and has the stamp of originality
Answer: An update to this question based on my experience with the Sennheiser E865 purchased here on Amazon: Mine had the original stamps and markings including the holographics, however Amazon marketplace is not an official distributor so Sennheiser will NOT honor warranty for products purchased through Amazon.
Question: These guys work on toms
Answer: If you are referring to tom tom drums then I don't see why not. They work really well for vocals both during performance and recording.
Question: what would this mic plug into? special type of speaker
Answer: This mic uses a standard XLR-type cable. Most (but not all) powered speakers use line-level inputs, not microphone-level. If your speakers happen to have an XLR mic input you're good to go! If not, you'll need a preamplifier such as a mixer with an XLR mic input. Many DJ mixers have a mic input, and any studio or live sound mixer will have mic inputs as well. If your speakers or mixer have a 1/4" mic input, sometimes called a high-Z input, you'll need a female XLR to unbalanced 1/4" male adapter.
