14 best drum overhead mics

Drum overhead mics are essential components of a drum kit's microphone setup in recording studios and live sound applications. These microphones are strategically positioned above the drum kit to capture the overall sound and ambiance of the drums, cymbals, and the surrounding space. Here's what you need to know about drum overhead mics:

  1. Purpose: Drum overhead mics serve the primary purpose of capturing the "overhead" or ambient sound of the entire drum kit. They complement close-miking techniques used on individual drums and add a sense of space and realism to the drum sound.

  2. Microphone Types: There are two main types of microphones commonly used as drum overheads:

    • Condenser Microphones: These are popular choices for overhead mics due to their sensitivity and ability to capture high-frequency detail and nuances. They are often used for capturing the shimmering tones of cymbals.
    • Dynamic Microphones: Some engineers prefer dynamic microphones for overhead applications, especially for capturing the snare and toms. They can handle high sound pressure levels and provide a different tonal character compared to condenser mics.
  3. Stereo Techniques: Overhead mics are often used in stereo configurations to create a sense of width and depth in the drum sound. Common stereo techniques include:

    • XY: Two cardioid condenser mics are crossed at a 90-degree angle.
    • ORTF: Two cardioid condenser mics are spaced 17 cm apart and angled at 110 degrees.
    • Mid-Side (M/S): Combines a cardioid (mid) and a figure-8 (side) microphone to allow for variable stereo width during mixing.
  4. Placement: Overhead mics are typically positioned above the drum kit at a height that captures the entire kit, including cymbals and toms. The specific placement can vary depending on the desired sound and the recording environment.

  5. Phase Coherence: Ensuring proper phase coherence between the overhead microphones and other close-miked drum elements is crucial to achieving a balanced and coherent drum sound.

  6. Room Ambiance: Overhead mics also capture the natural reverb and ambiance of the room, contributing to the overall drum sound. The room's acoustic characteristics can significantly influence the final recording.

  7. Panning and Mixing: In the mixing process, the signals from the overhead mics are panned to create a stereo image. Engineers can adjust the balance of the overheads with close mics to shape the drum sound to their liking.

  8. Additional Uses: In addition to drum kit recording, drum overhead mics are sometimes used for capturing acoustic instruments, percussion ensembles, and live sound reinforcement in concert settings.

  9. Pop Filters and Shock Mounts: To minimize plosives and vibrations, some engineers use pop filters and shock mounts when positioning overhead mics.

  10. Budget and Quality: There is a wide range of overhead microphones available, catering to various budgets and quality levels. High-end condenser microphones are often preferred for critical studio recordings, while dynamic microphones can be a more budget-friendly option for live sound.

In summary, drum overhead mics play a crucial role in capturing the overall sound and ambiance of a drum kit. The choice of microphone type and technique can significantly influence the final drum sound, making them an essential tool for engineers and musicians alike.

User questions & answers

Question: How would one of these be for miking a guitar amp's speaker
Answer: Honestly, for an amp you should check out something like the Shure SM57 for starters. That's the number 1 mic people put on a guitar amp, and you can adjust and go from there. People don't normally use a small diaphragm condenser microphone for guitar amps, like the Samson C02. They'd be great on other things though, like drum overheads, acoustic guitar, and other acoustic instruments. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us on Amazon. We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio
Question: How are these mics for eliminating echo when shooting film indoors? Will the preamps on a Zoom h4 be adequate
Answer: I guess it could be Nice, but I am using CO2s mostly for acoustic guitar still can take a much more important level of dB. These are cardioid, so this could be a little tricky to get diaologues... If you already got a unidirectional type of mic... this sure could be a cool choice for miking a stereo more kind of ambiant take. But to be true, I don't know much about how this specific mic (CO2) reacts to these kind of reflections... I'll check out If the specs for the unit and mics are alright!
Question: How's the distance on these microphones
Answer: Hopefully this helps. I use one of the microphones to record intros for some online podcasts. The microphone pics up very clearly from a few inches from my mouth to a couple of feet away (overhead). I have nothing but high praises for these mics. The price does not indicate their quality. These are top notch mics.
Question: how do you turn this microphone on
Answer: Hi Anthony,There is no switch to turn on these microphones. They require phantom power from a pre-amp to run them. When I got them working the sound was excellent! Best of Luck with getting them working !

User questions & answers

Question: What would i plug these into? just for me to plug into and play music and plug my iem into? just me for now. no band
Answer: These condenser mics require phantom power to work, so you need to plug them into some device that provides phantom power, like most mixers with microphone inputs.
Question: How do I change the capsules
Answer: CAN'T SAY HOW, I DIDN'T CHANGE IT YET. IT IS IN MY DRUM BOOTH AND WORK PERFECTLY. I DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE ANYTHINK.....NORMALLY YOU JUST UNSCREW THE CAP, AND PLACE THE OTHER ONE BY SCREWING IT BACK....
Question: Would these work well for capturing dialogue for film making
Answer: Yes, with the super-card capsule it is an OK interior dialog boom mic by my tests.
Question: has anyone used these for drum overheads
Answer: Yes. They sound great!! They have character of their own. I used them for rehearsal here-https://youtu.be/W_2v1ulax40

User questions & answers

Question: Would these sound great as audience mics
Answer: Not as hand held. These are a mount and cover a stage type of mic. I love them to get my wife's choirs covered as they pick up everything. Hope this helps!Jeff
Question: can they be used for asmr making? Are they Binaural Microphone
Answer: These are not binaural microphones; however they could be use as part of a binaural rig if you have a dummy head or some other similar apparatus in which to mount them that would mimic the spacing and shape of human ears.
Question: I do not and have never had something to records with. If i were to buy these mics what else would I need to record. Like cables and equipment
Answer: To record with these mics, you would need two balanced XLR cables. You would also need some sort of pre-amp into which to plug them which is capable of supplying phantom power. You would also need a recording device. Many recording devices include preamps and phantom power so that you can run the XLR cable directly into the recorder. As a baseline for a quality recording device, consider something like the Zoom F4 or the Sound Devices MixPre3 or MixPre3M. Zoom also makes less expensive devices, but the preamps really lack in quality by comparison.
Question: How well would these work in video production
Answer: It would depend upon what you intend to shoot. The best uses for the microphones would include things such as choral or acoustic music in a controlled environment. If you intend to capture ambient or general sound such as machinery, ocean waves, dogs barking, cars driving by, these would be quite sufficient. If you intent to capture dialogue, I would suggest either a worn mic, a handheld mic (if you don't mind it being in the shot), or a shotgun mic (with or without a handheld boom). For the M5s to work well for dialogue, they would need to be so close to the speaker that they would necessarily be in the shot on a stand as these cannot be handheld without serious handling noise. You would need something much more directional to get decent sounding speech. These microphones arranged properly basically pick up the same sounds that our ears do in real space--but that doesn't always quite work for video. In real life, our brains do a fantastic trick of filtering out all of the background or unwanted sounds so that we can zero in on what we are trying to hear. Video confuses that process in our brains, so we have to take a different tact. We have to capture sound that actually isn't perfectly true to life, but makes it seem that way when we watch the video.I don't intend to be patronizing with this response; I just want you to get what you really want.

User questions & answers

Question: How works with acustics instruments (Guitar
Answer: I am using them for over heads on my drums. I think a directional mic might be better.
Question: Is this a condenser or dynamic mic
Answer: Condenser
Question: Do they require phantom power
Answer: typically condenser microphones do require 48v phantom power.
Question: Has anyone used these mics for live playing? If so how are they
Answer: They are great. My PA man was not experienced enough; said the mic was not working. After I checked the equipment I found the +48 v was not powered on. I switched it on in the middle of a church service and everyone was like whao! Remember it works with +48V Phontom power.

Question: What stand would you recommend that can be used while standing (so not short, desktop stand
Answer: I do not have the digital mic. I like the DR Pro mic stand for my mics.
Question: My mic stand has a 5/8 inch screw. Can I remove the 3/8" female metal insert to make the mic holder able to fit on the 5/8" stand? How to get it out
Answer: Yes, you can. Just find something to remove the female metal insert on the mic holder like a coin or a metal piece that fits in it. Be careful not to break the mic holder because they are expensive I think, and without it you can't use the mic in a stand.
Question: Hi, I just need a great voice over without to spend time to removing eco and breathing, I do not have an insolation room is it the correct mic
Answer: it is a very good mic.....very directional, so does not pick up a lot of sound outside the voice....i have to restart if i hear a dog bark, motorcycle.....you can test it out. i use audacity punch and roll....then clean up some with rx7 declick and voice denoise. User questions & answers

Question: How good is this mic for congas and percussion
Answer: They work great for percussion instruments. If you are looking for a pair of microphones though, I’d look into the Lewitt LCT 040 matched pair at almost the same price.
Question: can you use an xlr to usb cable
Answer: The Audio-Technica 2021 is an active condenser mic. Being active, it requires 48 volts DC to make it work. The voltage is supplied to the microphone through the XLR microphone cable. Since the voltage is direct current (DC), it does not interfere with the sound that is transferred from the microphone to your USB equipped sound equipment. In my opinion, you will need a separate interface between the AT 2021 and the USB input. The USB input only supplies 5 volts DC, not enough for the microphone. The proper interface will both supply the proper voltage to the AT 2021, and transfer the sound from the microphone to your sound equipment.
Question: would this be a good mic to use for a trumpet
Answer: It's a very sensitive condenser mic, even for my acoustic guitar, so probably not the best for a trumpet. You'd have to be really far away from it so as not to blow up your sound. And then you'd probably loose all your tone in the process. If I were you, I'd research horn mics through Sweetwater or Muscians Friend, and then see who has the best price. Good luck.
Question: How dose it sound singing solo
Answer: Compared to a large diaphragm mic, these are harsher on vocals. It's designed for instruments, and detail and is not kind to solo vocalists.

User questions & answers

Question: How do these compare to the Presonus PM-2 matched condenser mics and for recording drums
Answer: Go ahead and buy these along wit the mics you specified, these costs pennies compared to.mics you specified. You will see it does not matter, any mic sounds good with professional audio editor program. Even with a low cost mixer, I us them with my drumkit
Question: can you connect an xlr cable adapter to the mics
Answer: As in converting XLR to 1/4" connections, I will say no. All condenser mics require phatom power to operate. This is a current of 48 volts that is sent through the 3rd pin of an XLR cable. 1/4" only has two wires (two paths). There is no third wire to route phantom power.
Question: Would these mics work good for overhead on drums
Answer: I got them for this exact purpose and have been so impressed by how they're delivering. Granted, I'm not an audio engineer and i can only compare this to what i was getting out of a handful of cheap dynamic mics before this, but for my purposes they seem to pick up everything so cleanly, with the cymbals sounding sparkly and real, but the toms and snare still having plenty of presence too. pairing them with a bass mic is crucial, though. I'll post a review with a little more detail but bottom line is I'm pleased as punch.
Question: Looks like these are for instruments. Has anyone had good experience using them for vocals? What is your opinion on using these for singing? Thanks
Answer: I wouldn't used these for live vocal performances but for home recording these are pretty good. With the right amount of compression I was getting some impressive results. Then again i'm into rock music.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a balanced or unbalanced mic
Answer: i believe these mics come soldered with pins 1&3 together, which makes it unbalance. To make it a balance signal you will have to unsolder pins 1&3 Which can be done fairly easy.
Question: Is this a good microphone for making youtube videos
Answer: This microphone was, without a doubt, the worst mic I have ever owned. I had to send it back it was so terrible.
Question: Where is it manufactured
Answer: Hi, I'm Martin and I work for Pyleaudio. This PDMIC78 is being manufactured in China. Rest assure that all our products are quality tested and 100% working units. If you have other questions, please let me know. You can reach me at [email protected]. Thank you for choosing Pyle.
Question: why is there no on off switch
Answer: Most of the quality microphones you can buy don’t have an on/ off switch. This is modeled after the Sure SM57, which does not have one.
