14 best onstage vocal microphone

An onstage vocal microphone is an essential piece of equipment for live music performances, public speaking events, and recording sessions. It's designed to capture the sound of a performer's voice and project it to the audience or recording equipment. Here's what you need to know about onstage vocal microphones:

  1. Types of Vocal Microphones:

    • Dynamic Microphones: Dynamic microphones are the most common choice for onstage vocals. They are durable, can handle high sound pressure levels, and are less sensitive to feedback.Popular models like the Shure SM58 are known for their reliability and quality.

    • Condenser Microphones: Condenser microphones are more sensitive and capture a broader range of frequencies, making them suitable for studio recording. However, some condenser microphones are designed for live use and are a great choice for professional vocalists.

  2. Polar Patterns:

    • Vocal microphones come with different polar patterns, which determine how they pick up sound. The most common polar patterns for onstage vocal microphones are cardioid and supercardioid. These patterns focus on capturing sound from the front while minimizing feedback from the sides and rear.
  3. Frequency Response:

    • Vocal microphones have varying frequency responses. A flat response is desirable for accurate vocal reproduction, but some microphones are tailored to emphasize certain frequencies, such as the midrange, to enhance vocal clarity and presence.
  4. Durability and Construction:

    • Onstage vocal microphones are built to withstand the rigors of live performances. They are typically designed with robust construction and shock-resistant components to handle handling noise and accidental drops.
  5. Sensitivity:

    • Microphone sensitivity refers to how efficiently it converts sound into an electrical signal. High-sensitivity microphones can capture soft sounds, while low-sensitivity microphones are less prone to distortion in high-volume situations.
  6. Wireless Options:

    • Many performers opt for wireless vocal microphones to have more mobility on stage. Wireless systems include a transmitter that connects to the microphone and a receiver connected to the sound system.
  7. Accessories:

    • To complete a vocal microphone setup, you may need accessories like microphone stands, pop filters (to reduce plosive sounds), windshields (for outdoor performances), and XLR cables to connect the microphone to the sound system.
  8. Microphone Placement:

    • Proper microphone placement is crucial for optimal sound quality. The microphone should be positioned close to the performer's mouth but at a slight angle to avoid plosive breath noises and pops.
  9. Feedback Prevention:

    • Feedback can be an issue in live sound situations. Techniques such as adjusting microphone positioning, using a graphic equalizer, and sound-checking can help prevent feedback.
  10. Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the microphone grille and connectors, is essential to ensure the microphone continues to perform reliably.

Selecting the right onstage vocal microphone depends on the performer's needs, vocal style, and the specific venue. It's often a good idea to try out different microphones and seek advice from sound engineers or experienced vocalists to find the best fit for your individual requirements.

Long associated with its unmistakable sound and unsurpassed reliability, the Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone is widely considered the most popular mic in the world. Designed for professional vocal use in sound reinforcement and studio recording, the Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone utilizes a highly effective, built-in, spherical filter that minimizes wind and breath pop noise while the cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes unwanted background noise. The tailored vocal response on the SM58 is a legendary tone that has become a world standard. Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone Features: Smooth, mid-frequency presence rise for world-famous SM58 Mic, sound Uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source, Minimizes background noise, Pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise, Rugged construction for extreme reliability in demanding applications, Effective, built-in spherical wind and pop filter, 50 to 15,000 Hz frequency response, Supplied with break-resistant stand, adapter which rotates 180 degrees, Legendary Shure quality, ruggedness, and reliability. Includes a mic stand adapter and a zippered storage pouch. Proximity Effect: When the sound source is less than 1/4 inch from the microphone, the microphone boosts bass frequencies (by 6 to 10 dB at 100 Hz), creating a warmer and richer bass sound than when farther away. This effect, known as proximity effect, happens only in unidirectional dynamic microphones like the Shure SM58 Vocal Mic. The low-frequency roll-off on the SM58 provides greater control, allowing the user to take full advantage of proximity effect.

User questions & answers

Question: I apologize for my ignorance. Need for my church. Does this run on battery alone or does it have to be hooked up to something to work
Answer: It does not need a battery, but you do need to connect it to an amplifier that has a mic XLR connection. Mostly this would be a separate pre-amp which is then connected to a larger console or amplifier system, though some systems combines both.
Question: How long is the cable that I can get with this mic
Answer: If the official Shure part number SM58-CN is selected, the "CN" means a 25' XLR microphone cable will be included. Other variants include SM58S which is microphone with an on/off switch, SM58-LC which is microphone only with no cable.
Question: What amplifier or mixer [ $20- $50 ] should i buy which is compatible with sm58 ? need suggestion
Answer: There are too many questions to be answered here. Are your speakers powered or non-active? How many mics are you running? Any other systems involved, like instruments, computers, ipods etc? Are you looking for built in EFX? Although my first amp was a Pyle 3000W for $100 and I used a cheap Behringer 4 bus mixer, I have moved on from that purchase. Best advise I can give someone, is to buy a book or video on live sound and mixing, it will save you time, heartaches and maybe even money.
Question: Feel free to laugh a bit and excuse my ignorance. I am starting voice lessons does this microphone only work with a computer? Or can I hook it up to something different? Ok no more laughing. Thank You
Answer: I'd like to correct a statement that's been made about the SM-58, which is the most popular, universal "performer's mic," found in every band that can afford it and serving as the White House microphone for heads of state. It's a "dynamic" rather than a "condenser mic," which means it's durable, tough, long-lasting, made to take abuse. But it's not the preferred microphone in the recording studio, which is where the more sensitive, nuanced condenser microphone shines (but don't toss it in a bag and "take it on the road"). Condenser mics require more power than dynamic mics, and that power is called "phantom power," which is found in most mixing boards and in many amps--and in this handy adapter. But you do NOT require Phantom Power for an XLR connection: you require it for a CONDENSER MIC. And since the popular SM58 is a DYNAMIC MIC, the Phantom Power is wasted, a needless add-on. If you want to convert your XLR to USB (or to a phone plug), there are many adapters and cables for $10 that will do the trick You certainly don't need to invest a hundred in the pictured adapter--that's sheer "overkill. It's a bit of a mystery why sellers are showing the SM58 with a Phantom-Powered Adapter for condenser mics. You may be wasting $100 on one or the other of these incompatible devices.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use as a microphone without a computer
Answer: I think u meant can u use it as a regular mic without computer. The answer is not without a soundcard to plug it into I believe.
Question: About 1 week ago, I saw this mic for $99 (not on sale) and usually ships 2-4 weeks, and now its $160+. What happened
Answer: I don't know, but check other markets I've seen Blue products bellow 100 dollors used I hope this helps.
Question: Does it come with a usb cable
Answer: Yes
Question: Debating between yeti nano and original yeti, which one is for long term use? i am new in this, not sure if will need to use it for advanced later. tq
Answer: Depends, what are you recording? Original yeti is large and a bit more versatile, you can record in 4 different audio direction, i.e omnidirectional, cardioid, bidirectional, and stereo making it ideal for recording YouTube videos, podcasts, large groups, or instrumentals. Yeti nano has 2 audio recording options , Omni and bidirectional, so made more for podcasts and YouTube videos. It’s also smaller. If you want to check out the nano I did a unboxing of the gold yeti nano, search on YouTube Julian Lonzoe yeti nano. It looks pretty awesome.

User questions & answers

Question: question will this hold an audio technica 2050 mic
Answer: I would think so. It's small but very strong tubing. It locks very positively with gear type teeth. It will not creep down like a friction disc lock.
Question: What is the largest diameter pole I could clamp this to
Answer: Don't know the largest, but have clamped it to mic stands and cymbal stands for both acoustic and vdrums and have been more than satisfied! I am a singing drummer and I attach an ipad mount to it to for lyrics, which only clamps to a max of a mic stand.
Question: If I use this to clamp a mic to the vertical stand on which my ipad is mounted, will there be a proper distance for reading charts from the ipad
Answer: OK, so you are trying to mount your IPod, to a mic stand, along with a microphone. It am depends upon the type of microphone you are using. The closer the guitar is to the microphone, the better the sound will be. As far as the Ipod; how's your vision ?
Question: Will this hold a bluebird blue mic
Answer: This is just a mic stand extension that attaches to a mic stand. You need to screw on a mic clip or shock mount onto it to hold a mic. If you are asking will it carry the weight of that mic, my guess would be yes but it is intended for lighter weight pencil mics to mic a guitar while you stand.

Answer: Yes, the "S" indicates a model with a switch. In practice, I almost never use the switch. I mute the mic at the sound board. I also find sometimes the switch can inadvertently be switched off. I really like the mic, but wouldn't buy one with a switch the next time.

The OM2 touts a broad frequency response, full-bodied and articulate sound reproduction, resistance to feedback, and ability to handle high SPLs in excess of 140 dB without distortion. The OM2 is known for its clarity, resistance to feedback, and ability to handle sound pressure levels in excess of 140 dB without distortion.
  • IDEAL FOR VOCALS, SPEECH, HORNS, GUITARS, FLUTE, PERCUSSION & DRUMS: The hyper-cardioid polar pattern provides off-axis rejection of over 25dB and extremely high gain before feedback and features 50 Hz to 16 kHz frequency response with a mild rise in the low-mid frequencies for added body, and a presence boost for high-end clarity. Unconventionally low output level (8 to 10 dB lower than typical dynamic microphones) serves as a natural pad at the capsule to maintain high fidelity at the source.

The windscreen delivers adequate noise suppression from wind, popping, sibilance, etc. Also included is an XLR cable which is a balanced & shielded 3-conductor audio cable with Professional 3-Pin XLR male and female connectors on each end. User questions & answers

Question: Hi, There are different versions of the MSA9505(newer one has a bigger knob), i want the older one(which is in your photo) is that the one UR selling
Answer: The one that I received from Amazon is not like in the photo. Mine has a small round knob on the extension. The knob at the elbow looks to be like the photo. I don't have any complaints about it.
Question: I only want answer from seller. Does this item say "on-stage stands" in white on the KNOB?(not on the elbow) but on the KNOB located on the elbow
Answer: The lettering "On-Stage Stands" is on both knobs (one knob is at the elboe and the other is at the extending shaft). The lettering color on theknobs is light grey (not pure white). There is also a label with pure-white lettering affixed to the shaft. This label also has a red underline and "Made in China" in red lettering. BTW - I am not the seller; just a buyer. I'm just responding to Amazon's question.

Answer: I use mine on the end of a straight floor stand, but it looks to me like you can use it with the table clamp.
Question: Snowball
Answer: Waffle
