11 best clarinet mouthpieces
A clarinet mouthpiece is a critical component of the clarinet, a woodwind musical instrument. It plays a significant role in determining the sound and tone quality produced by the instrument. The mouthpiece is the part of the clarinet that the musician places in their mouth to blow air into, which sets the reed in motion and produces sound.
Key features and aspects of clarinet mouthpieces include:
Material: Clarinet mouthpieces are typically made from hard rubber, plastic, or occasionally metal. Different materials can affect the sound and response of the instrument.
Design: Mouthpieces have specific designs that influence the tone and playability of the clarinet. The internal shape and dimensions of the mouthpiece, such as the bore and the facing curve, significantly impact how the air flows and how the reed vibrates.
Facing: The facing of the mouthpiece refers to the part of the mouthpiece that contacts the reed. It includes the curve and length of the flat table where the reed sits. Different facings can affect the ease of playing and the sound produced.
Ligature: A ligature is used to secure the reed to the mouthpiece. It can be made of metal, fabric, or other materials. The ligature's design and tightness can influence the vibration of the reed and consequently, the sound.
Baffle and Chamber: The baffle is the curve or shape inside the mouthpiece near the tip, which affects the airflow and sound projection. The chamber, which is the internal volume of the mouthpiece, also influences the sound's characteristics.
Tip Opening: This refers to the distance between the tip of the reed and the tip of the mouthpiece.A larger tip opening allows more airflow, producing a louder and potentially brighter sound.
Reed Compatibility: Mouthpieces are designed for specific reed strengths and types. Finding the right match between the mouthpiece and reed is crucial for optimal playability and sound quality.
Selecting the appropriate clarinet mouthpiece is important for achieving the desired sound and ease of playing. Different mouthpieces suit various styles of music and individual player preferences. Musicians often experiment with different mouthpieces to find the one that best complements their playing style and musical objectives. Additionally, regular cleaning and maintenance of the mouthpiece are essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance.

Answer: | I haven't tried a V21 on the mouthpiece, but it is fine with a V12 or a Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic. |
Question: | Sorry if this was already asked, but how does this compare to the traditional B45 or the B 45 Dot |

Question: | What’s the difference between cm1405 and cm4178? thanks |
Answer: | The 1405 BD5 13 has a tip opening of 1.13mm and uses a new internal and external design. The 4178 M15 13 has a tip opening of 1.035mm and is a bit more traditional by design. They are completely different mouthpieces. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a hard Rubber or plastic mouthpiece |
Answer: | Hard Rubber |
Question: | I'm just starting to learn clarinet, so will it be ok to start using this with my D'addario 2.5 Reserve Classics |
Answer: | When my son first started playing he did not use these. After a year he switched to these so I’m not sure if they are for beginners? He liked them a lot and said it was easier to play with these. |
Question: | How easy is it to play on this mouthpiece |
Answer: | Think the answer to your question would really depend on what the rest of your equipment looks like. I purchased this for use with my Selmer 10-Gs (and using 3.5 strength Vandoren V-12 reeds) and have been very pleased with the results. Also purchased an M-15 mouthpiece as a second choice and good as a backup. But the M13 Lyre is definitely my first choice. |
Question: | I have been playing the same Yamaha mouthpiece that came with my clarinet 4 years later. Will this fit on my Yamaha |
Answer: | Yes |

Question: | Why does this yamaha mouthpiece not fit a yamaha clarinet? yes, i used plenty of cork grease |
Answer: | Do you have a vintage instrument? Some older instruments have slightly different dimensions than modern instruments. If this is the case, you will probably have to find a repair shop that can handle the problem. This is the only situation where I have personally encountered this problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size reed do I need to use |
Answer: | You need a B-flat clarinet reed. If you're a beginner, I'd start with something in the 2.5-3 hardness range or maybe a Lavoz Medium. |
Question: | What is this mouthpiece made out of |
Answer: | This is an acrylic mouthpiece. |
Question: | will a Rico #2 reed work with this mouthpiece |
Answer: | The number on the box of reeds is the thickness of the reed. It can change the way you play in both tone and embouchure, but overall it has nothing to do with how it fits on the mouthpiece as long as the box says it's for a Bb clarinet. |
Question: | Will this fit a Leblanc Vito 7212 clarinet |
Answer: | The Clark W. Forbes Debut clarinet mouthpiece is a standard clarinet mouthpiece that will fit all B flat and A clarinets. It will fit the Leblanc Vito 7212. Before first use put a thin coating of cork grease on the cork at the bottom of the mouthpiece. Make sure the mouthpiece is lined up along the axis of the clarinet and gently put it into the top of the barrel joint, using a twisting motion. When it's all the way in you can turn it until it's properly oriented. It will make the clarinet easier to play and sound better. |
