14 best composite violin bows

Composite violin bows are a type of bow used by violinists and other string instrument players, such as violists and cellists. These bows are constructed using a combination of materials, typically a blend of carbon fiber and other synthetic materials. They have gained popularity in recent years for several reasons:

  1. Durability: Composite bows are known for their durability and resistance to changes in humidity and temperature. Unlike traditional wooden bows, they are less prone to warping or breaking, making them a practical choice for musicians who travel frequently or perform in various environmental conditions.

  2. Consistency: Composite bows are manufactured using precise processes, resulting in a consistent performance across different bows of the same model. This consistency is particularly valuable for musicians seeking a reliable and predictable playing experience.

  3. Weight and Balance: Many composite bows are designed to be lightweight, which can reduce fatigue during extended playing sessions. The balance of the bow is also carefully adjusted to provide a comfortable and controlled feel for the player.

  4. Tone Production: While some traditionalists may argue that wooden bows produce a more nuanced and warm tone, many players appreciate the clear and focused tone that composite bows can produce. They can enhance the projection and articulation of the instrument.

  5. Affordability: Composite bows are often more affordable than high-quality, handcrafted wooden bows. This makes them an attractive option for students and intermediate players who are looking for a reliable and budget-friendly bow.

  6. Versatility: Composite bows are versatile and can be used with a variety of string instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. This versatility makes them a practical choice for musicians who play multiple instruments.

  7. Ergonomics: Some composite bows feature ergonomic designs and innovative shapes that improve handling and playability, enhancing the overall experience for the musician.

In summary, composite violin bows offer a durable, consistent, and often affordable alternative to traditional wooden bows. Their unique qualities make them a popular choice among musicians of all skill levels, and they have become a standard option for many players in the world of orchestral strings.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this bow pre-rosined
Answer: No. I think all bows come without rosin. You will have to get some before it will play your violin. Because the bow is new, you will have to apply the rosin several times before the hairs are powdered enough.
Question: How long is this bow
Answer: Exactly the same length as all my other violin bows. My favorite bow!
Question: Is this the same product that's sold in the Fiddlerman website
Answer: I don't see anything under Viotti brand on Fiddlerman's website. I can say this is a fine bow at a very fair price.
Question: Does the bow come with rosin on the bow hair
Answer: These bows are fresh from the workshop and have not been pre-rosined. Before you can start playing, you will need to apply rosin. To do so, turn the button screw at the bottom of the bow until the hairs have reached your desired tension. Then, take your resin cake and run it up and down the hairs 40-50 times, until you’ve reached your preferred amount. Now you can play with your new bow!

User questions & answers

Answer: It is a cushion for the thumb and index finger and covers and holds the end of the silver winding in place.
Question: Why is there plastic(shrink wrap) covering the metal winding. Is it removeable? It feels cheap
Answer: China.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: Somewhere far from the US. I ordered this bow, and it said it would be 6-8 weeks delivery. It ended up showing up 3 months later, after many angry e mails with the seller. I did get the bow, and it's decent, but it took forever to get to me.

User questions & answers

Question: How do I know which size to choose
Answer: I went according to the size of the violin. I wish I had a better answer. Each violin has a size fit for the arm. The bow is the same.
Question: I want to buy a 4/4 green bow. Do you think this bow is suitable for beginners
Answer: I went to the local music store to buy a beginners bow, but it was $50. So, I bought this one for half that, plus shipping. It is the same quality as the one in the music store. The music store had the more expensive ones locked up. The one I had came with a $150 4/4 electric violin, my first. I really liked the one that came with it. This one is ok, but I like my old one a little better. (It is broke in.) Someday I might go look at those the music store locked up.
Question: Why does it take so long to ship? 3-4 months is a little excessive
Answer: Hello, sorry for the inconvenience. In September and October, there were some problems with parcel logistics shipments from China, which caused delays. At present, the logistics time has returned to normal. Parcels shipped from US Amazon warehouses can generally be delivered within 7 days. Please purchase with confidence.
Question: Can this bow be rehaired
Answer: I doubt it. I wanted to rehair my old bow, which also was an inexpensive bow and did research trying to find out who locally rehaired bows. I figured $20-30 for a rehair. It's not. And luthers will not rehair (according to the information I found on several websites) unless it is a very pricey bow. The way they were dodging around the answer I got the feeling that as far as rehairing goes "if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it". In the end, I bought this bow for about what I'd hoped to pay for a rehair INSTEAD of getting a rehair. I also learned in my reading that the cheaper bows are not set up to be rehaired. I'm not sure what the difference is, but the expensive ones have something else done/not done to them to make rehairing easier. However, despite knowing that someday I'll have to get a replacement, I'm quite happy with this bow. It handles well and looks good.

Answer: There still isn't enough rosin on it. Remember that a new bow starts out wihout ANY rosin and needs a great deal to get started. I recommend scratching the rosin with the screw part of the bow to get out more rosin and then wipe the bow hair accross it to get ample amount on the bow :)
