11 best guitar pedal tuners

Guitar pedal tuners are essential tools for musicians who want to keep their instruments in tune while performing. These tuners are popular among guitarists and bassists, as they offer several advantages over traditional clip-on or handheld tuners. Here's what you need to know about guitar pedal tuners:

  1. Pedal Design: Guitar pedal tuners are compact and sturdy units designed to fit on a pedalboard, alongside other guitar effects pedals. They often come in a typical pedal format, with a footswitch for engaging and disengaging the tuner.

  2. Always On: One of the key benefits of a pedal tuner is that it can be left "always on" in your signal chain. When not in use, it mutes the audio signal, allowing you to silently tune your instrument during a performance without disrupting the audience.

  3. Accuracy: Most pedal tuners offer high levels of accuracy. They use various tuning modes, such as chromatic, polyphonic, and strobe, to ensure precise tuning.

  4. Display: Guitar pedal tuners typically feature a bright and easy-to-read display, making it convenient to tune your instrument even in low-light conditions on stage.

  5. Bypass Options: Many pedal tuners come with options for true bypass or buffered bypass. True bypass ensures that your signal chain remains unaltered when the tuner is off, while buffered bypass can help maintain your signal quality even when the tuner is engaged.

  6. Polyphonic Tuning: Some modern pedal tuners offer polyphonic tuning, which means they can tune all the strings of your instrument simultaneously. This feature speeds up the tuning process significantly.

  7. Chromatic vs. Strobe Tuning: Chromatic tuners allow you to tune to any pitch, whereas strobe tuners offer an even higher level of accuracy by displaying deviations from the correct pitch in real-time.

  8. Power Supply: Guitar pedal tuners typically require a power supply, as they are often not battery-operated. Make sure your pedalboard has a power source to accommodate the tuner.

  9. Durability: These tuners are built to withstand the rigors of live performances. They are often housed in rugged, metal enclosures.

  10. Tuning Modes: Guitar pedal tuners often come with various tuning modes, including standard guitar/bass tuning, alternate tunings, and drop tunings.

  11. Tuning Range: Most pedal tuners can handle a wide tuning range, accommodating various instruments like guitars, basses, and even other stringed instruments like ukuleles.

  12. Signal Chain Position: Typically, pedal tuners are placed at the beginning of your signal chain to ensure accurate tuning of all your pedals. Placing them at the front allows them to mute your entire pedalboard when tuning.

In conclusion, guitar pedal tuners are essential tools for any guitarist or bassist, offering accuracy, convenience, and flexibility in tuning their instruments during live performances or studio sessions. They have become a standard addition to many musicians' pedalboards due to their reliability and functionality.

User questions & answers

Question: What does the center button do
Answer: On/Off switch. When On and tuning, no sound gets through to the amp. When playing, you need to turn the tuner to OFF. The LED display is off while you're playing.
Question: is it sutable for tuning 8 string low stuff or bass
Answer: Works GREAT tuning my 5 string bass...
Question: Can you see the screen in the dark, IE.. is it backlit
Answer: Yes it is. In fact, the entire backlit screen turns green when the string is in tune (it is blue otherwise, flat or sharp). However, I can't figure out how to change the tuning mode from chromatic to guitar. It works in chromatic mode, but I feel it would work better if it only had EADGBE to choose from.
Question: When tuning, does it mute the output
Answer: I use this tuner on my pedal board. Yes, it does mute the output when engaged for tuning. It is also true bypass when not tuning. Not a fancy tuner, but perfect for live performance.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the latency specification of this set please
Answer: Not sure what the exact numbe is, but I personally can't hear any latency at all when I use mine.
Question: Can i attach one to sound board and other to speaker
Answer: Sure you can . it will work
Question: Why will this not work with a active guitar
Answer: There may be a couple reasons: 1) In some rare cases, the guitar’s active electronics are wired with inverse polarity. In this scenario, the transmitter's electronics can go into a protection mode that keeps the system from being functional. 2) Because active pickups usually deliver a higher signal voltage range, you can notice a difference in the sound of the pickup depending on what devices you send the signal through before it goes into your amp. 3) It’s not the active electronics that causes the interference on the transmitter. It’s the transmitter that causes (poorly shielded) active electronics. A short cable which increases the distance of the transmitter will solve this problem in most cases. Hope this helps.
Question: What is the signal latency specification of this set please
Answer: The signal latency is about 6ms~12ms

Question: Is it a true bypass pedal
Answer: Although it might say true bypass, it’s definitely not. I’ve had this for a while and it’s been affecting my tone. I can’t get super clean tones with it, there’s a very noticeable break up. Looking for a new tuner.
Question: Do you have to hold the switch down, or does it click
Answer: It clicks to toggle the tuner on and off. When off the unit passes the signal thru to the amp. When on, it allows you to tune without the sound coming through the amp. At least, when it works. Which it rarely did for me.

Question: Will this work with a 5 string bass

Product features

StroboStomp HD

The StroboStomp HD boasts a high-definition, LCD screen that incorporates a variable color LED backlight. The user-selectable colors can be used to personalize the tuner or to increase display viewing quality in different levels of ambient lighting depending on the usage environment. The vibrant screen colors can also be assigned to stock or user presets to significantly reduce menu navigation time and increase on-stage tuning confidence at the gig.

Pure Buffer Mode Operation

Does your love for effect-driven musical chaos require a massive pedal board? Need that XL cable for jumping off the stack during your face melting solo? No problem!

The StroboStomp HD features a PURE buffer mode to preserve the sonic clarity of your axe while enabling you to run a collection of pedals and long cable lengths without compromise.

100% Pop-less True Bypass

We've redesigned and greatly improved the way incoming signal was handled in true-bypass mode to deliver a perfectly silent experience when muting your signal.

A dual relay circuit effectively bleeds out any incoming signal before powering the tuner down resulting in a silent transition without affecting tone quality.

Easy To Read Display

The multi-color display on the StroboStomp HD is easy to see - even in direct sunlight! The strobe image and note name appear monochromatic in direct sunlight making it very easy to view what is going on with your tuning when playing outdoors.

Tune confidently with the largest strobe and note name pattern ever designed into a pedal tuner.

Sweetened Tunings

Sweetened Tunings are exclusive presets are instrument specific - optimized tunings - that are designed to compensate for an instrument's shortcomings to help increase its playability across a broader range of notes. Brighter and cleaner tones can be achieved using these proprietary Sweetened presets that are currently available for over 135 instrument types in the StroboStomp HD. Use our presets or create your own via Peterson Connect (visit our website) and load them in via the USB port.

We All See Color Differently

The LCD display on the StroboStomp HD is easy to see in bright lighting conditions but the LED backlight color is user-adjustable to suit your particular viewing preference. Globally change the display color for all functions or choose to associate colors with specific tunings for easy and quick identification at the gig. Create custom colors on Peterson Connect™ or use any of the 10 preset colors to organize your preset tuning list.

How Does It Work?

Every Peterson strobe tuner is a genuine strobe tuner that allows you to achieve extreme tuning resolution due to the nature of its display - placing it into 'strobe mode' is not required. In fact, the displays inside every one of our products provide the same tuning feedback as our renowned mechanical tuning strobes; more commonly referred to as 'spinning wheel' strobes.

Watch our 'Why Peterson' video series for greater detail on how our products work and what they can do for you and your instrument.
