14 best 5 string bass strings
5-string bass strings are specifically designed for 5-string bass guitars, which have an additional low B string compared to the traditional 4-string bass guitar. These strings play a crucial role in shaping the tone and playability of the instrument. Here's what you need to know about 5-string bass strings and their relation to musical instruments and accessories:
String Gauges: 5-string bass strings come in various gauges, which refer to the thickness of the strings. The choice of gauge affects the tone and feel of the bass. Heavier gauges can produce a thicker, deeper sound, while lighter gauges offer more flexibility and ease of playing.
Materials: Bass strings are typically made from different materials, including nickel-plated steel, stainless steel, and various types of alloys. The choice of material can influence the brightness, sustain, and overall tone of the bass.
Roundwound vs. Flatwound: Bass strings can be roundwound or flatwound. Roundwound strings have a textured surface and provide a brighter, more pronounced tone, suitable for various music genres.Flatwound strings have a smoother surface and produce a warmer, smoother tone, making them popular for jazz and vintage bass sounds.
Tension: The tension of the strings refers to how tightly they are stretched when tuned to pitch. Higher tension strings may feel stiffer and provide more sustain, while lower tension strings can feel looser and are often preferred for their ease of play.
Long Scale vs. Short Scale: Make sure to choose strings that match the scale length of your 5-string bass. Long-scale strings are standard for most 5-string basses, but short-scale options are available for specific models.
Coated Strings: Some manufacturers offer coated bass strings that have a protective coating to prolong their lifespan and maintain their tone over time. These can be a good choice if you want strings that last longer between changes.
Brand and Model: Different brands and models of bass strings have their own unique characteristics in terms of tone and playability. Experimenting with different brands and models can help you find the strings that suit your playing style and musical preferences.
String Replacement: Bass strings should be replaced periodically, as they can lose their tone and become dull over time. The frequency of replacement depends on factors such as how often you play and your playing style.
Setup and Maintenance: Proper string setup and maintenance are essential for getting the best performance from your 5-string bass. This includes adjusting the string height (action) and intonation to ensure accurate tuning and comfortable playability.
Sound and Style: The choice of 5-string bass strings is a personal one and can significantly impact your instrument's sound and playability. Experiment with different string options to find the tone and feel that best suits your musical style.
Choosing the right set of 5-string bass strings is crucial for achieving the desired tone and playability for your instrument. Consider your musical style, playing preferences, and the sound you want to achieve when selecting bass strings.

User questions & answers
Question: | Which set would be good for drop B |
Answer: | A larger string gauge will produce higher tension. When you drop your tuning that higher tension will help retain note clarity and power. Go for the Power Slinky or buy an even larger 5 string set and use only the biggest 4 strings. You'll have to adjust the truss rod and bridge afterwards. |
Question: | What’s the length in inches of these strings |
Answer: | Unless otherwise noted, all of our bass strings are 48" in length and designed for basses with a scale length of 34". |
Question: | Will these work on rbx jm2 John Myung signature |
Answer: | Hi there, If the scale length of the bass is around 34 or 35 inches it should work. Also John Myung's name appears on the back as an endorsed artists for the strings. Hope this helps! |
Question: | What are good for rock |
Answer: | Slinky are basically made for Rock! Bright, but also well rounded tones. Hope that helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How are the mediums compared to lights, i am looking at these for my first string change and i don't know what i have now. Is there a big difference |
Answer: | Not really a big difference. The most common gauge is 45-65-85-105 (Custom Light). If you like a bit more stiffness in your G and D strings, go with Medium. If you like a little looser E and A, go with Light. If you don't care one way or the other, just go with Custom Light.Mind you, again, it's not a huge difference. It's subtle. I like my E and A a little softer so it's easier to dig in, so I buy Lights (45 65 80 100). |
Question: | Is this a decent guage for drop b on a bass |
Answer: | been using EXL-170 for years with drop B and D tuning 4 string - fender P bass no buzz super clear |
Question: | Do these strings have a real bright tone? I am playing praise and worship music and not sure I want that real bright tone |
Answer: | If you want to avoid any bright tone, then consider taped, flat finish strings that are designed to reduce string and fret noise. Your pick ups and playing style will also affect your tone. These are middle of the road for nickel wound strings. |
Question: | Would the Medium gauge be good for drop D |
Answer: | In my opinion they are good for a drop D |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between the regular black beauties and the "limited edition" strings |
Answer: | They are $1.47 less, and you get to pay $26.99 for shipping. The strings are the same. |
Question: | Long Scale |
Answer: | I put them on my standard length 5-string and clipped off about 4-6" after fully wound. hope that helps |
Question: | do these strings help with frett clicking noise? Even with a light touch some of my strings click when they contact a frett. Thanks |
Answer: | That's almost more of a setup question than a string question. I *think* the coating might moderate any contact noise with the frets. I play rather lightly; my setup is moderately low, and the pickups are not right up to the strings - maybe 3/16"-4/16". I can hammer on notes without noticing any click. That's with my instrument and technique, though. Your results may vary. |
Question: | I did a search for short scale black beauties and the bkb5-45 string came up. i don't see anything that says short scale though. thoughts |
Answer: | These are not short scale bass strings. These have a scale length of 37 3/4". I do not believe DR makes Black Beauties in Short Scale. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's so special about cobalt |
Answer: | Yes, for sure. The E string in this set is .110" whereas a "normal" E string is .098" to .105" typically. So these strings have in the neighborhood of a 5% greater diameter and mass, thus will require a slightly greater tension on the neck. This will result in a "stiffer" string, where a lighter gauge string may feel "floppy" by comparison. I like a lot of tension in my strings. It gives me a truer, more consistent tone with a more aggressive attack and longer sustain. It also eliminates the excessive neck noises and clicks one gets with floppy strings. I used to buy DR heavy gauge strings exclusively, but these give me a compatible sound at about half the cost. I recommend these...and I play a standard tuning (E-A-D-G). |
Question: | Which gauge should I use for C standard tuning |
Answer: | Yes of course |
Question: | How would these strings work on a fretless |
Answer: | No. This is a 4 string set. A 5 string set will have a -5 after, like EPS165-5 |
Question: | Will these work with an acoustic bass |
Answer: | Unfortunately these will not fit a Precision Bass as they are "short scale" strings. The Precision Bass and other basses like it are "long scale" basses. Thankfully D'addario makes the same set with the same materials and gauge for long scale basses. Here is a link to that set. https://www.amazon.com/DAddario-EPS170-ProSteels-Guitar-Strings/dp/B0006Z4B6S |

User questions & answers
Question: | I built a violin bass from a kit. What would be a good set of strings |
Answer: | First of all Brian Bello is a shill; don't listen to him. Cobalts add a certain flavor to your sound that you can't get any other way. These things are meant for people who want a lot of aggresive power. They sound mean, and feel like silk; also they keep their sound much longer than most other strings. If you play hard rock or metal than these are the strings for you; otherwise move along. |
Question: | Is there a set for a 6 string bass |
Answer: | For C Standard, I highly recommend the "Not Even Slinky" strings. They are very thick and hold tuning really well. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |

Question: | will this be good for squier pj bass, standard size insteument |

Question: | What scale length |
Answer: | A Peavey Cirrus 5 string is NOT a through the body bass guitar, unless you have one I've never seen, mine is Bubanga w/ 35" Graphite Reinforced Maple-Walnut neck through the body (neck through not strings through) & Pau Ferro finger board, long scale GHS' work just fine. Doing it 20+ years. But I'm looking for a set of strings (like the old Peavey's) that have the black wrapped tops above the the top nut, I think someone said they are wrapped with silk thread, but I like the look on a Cirrus with the black, carbon fiber looking head stock. Wonder how much my wife would charge me to wrap them with black sewing thread :-) Another bassist told me GHS has colors at the top used for identifying the gauge of the string set. Anybody??? |

DR's proprietary alloy Quantum Nickel combines the smooth feel of nickel with the punch and brightness of stainless steel.
Round cores ensure 100% contact with the wrap wire, giving Pure Blues strings “more sustain and flexibility", according to iconic bassist Victor Wooten.
Hand winding the Pure Blues strings allows DR to closely monitor quality, make micro adjustments throughout the winding process, and add a human element that can’t be duplicated by a machine.
